Jimmy Kimmel's show is returning to ABC on Tuesday, but not all stations will air it

The network pulled the show after the Federal Communications Commission chair threatened regulatory action after the host's comments about Charlie Kirk's death.

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show will return to ABC’s airwaves on Tuesday, nearly a week after it was suspended amid criticism of the host’s remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

But many households across the U.S. still may not see the show. Sinclair, a company that operates more than 35 ABC affiliates across the U.S., said that it would replace Kimmel with news programming.

“Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” Sinclair said in a statement.

old.programming.dev appear to have disappeared

I used to prefer to go to old.programming.dev/ but this frontend is not working anymore (for a few months I believe). As I get a bad gateway response, hopefully, this is something that could be fixed.

But maybe I was the only user of this frontend, in which case, I think this might not be worth to revive it.

France recognises Palestine and calls for UN force in Gaza

Emmanuel Macron has announced France’s official recognition of the State of Palestine, setting out a plan for a UN-mandated international stabilisation force in postwar Gaza that is expected to find support in many countries but not in Israel or the US.

“The time has come to end the war in Gaza, the massacres and the death,” Macron said during a speech opening a special summit in the United Nations general assembly hall on Monday evening. “The time has come to do justice for the Palestinian people and thus to recognise the State of Palestine in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.”

The statements drew cheers and standing ovations from some in the hall, with the Palestinian Authority (PA) hailing France’s “historic and courageous” decision, but the session was not attended by the US and Israeli officials dismissed the initiative.

Ladybird - A browser built for the user

Hello guys, today I wanted to talk about a project I deeply care about and I'm actively contributing to, as I believe its good for everyone, including privacy concerned users

Ladybird Browser

This browser comes from the project "SerenityOS", and has since evolved and separated from it. The founders are Andreas Kling, and Chris Wanstrath. The main goal of this project is to create a browser from scratch, avoiding chromium, gecko, etc. The main keypoints that should be of interest for Privacy Oriented Users are the following:

  • Ladybird lead (Andreas Kling) states "We're not monetizing users, in any way. This is uncharted territory for browsers. So we're not going to do any default search deals. We're not going to do cryptocurrencies or try to monetize user data, just sponsorships and donations"
  • While** Ladybird will implement current web standards including cookie handling and tracking mechanisms for compatibility**, the browser's philosophy puts the user in control of these decisions, not the company. The browser won't have built-in incentives to encourage data collection since it doesn't profit from it.
  • It aims to be "free from advertising's influence" Ladybird, representing a shift away from the current web ecosystem where users like us are the product. This allows the project to implement privacy features without worrying about harming advertising partners or revenue streams.

As of now, the project has hired several developers with money coming from donations, from partners such as FUTO, Shopify, Cloudflare, among many, and is also seeing lots of volunteer activity on github. So well, if you like the web having more diversity and us having another alternative to google, check them out ladybird.org/

There's also !Servo@programming.dev browser engine that is being actively developed.

MIT Professor Cancels Israeli Military Grant After Student Pressure

Pro-Palestine student activists across the country have struggled to get their universities to respond to pressure for divestment from Israel and its military–industrial complex. So when a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology withdrew from a grant from the Israeli military after hearing feedback from students protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza, it was especially welcome news.

“This is one of the only cases where we know that student activism and public pressure led directly to an Israeli tie being cut, let alone a collaboration with its genocidal military,” said Mila Halgren, a postdoctoral associate at MIT. (The university did not respond to a request for comment.)

MIT has come under internal and public scrutiny for conducting research on warfare technology sponsored by Israel. In July, the United Nations condemned the school for conducting “weapons and surveillance research funded by the Israeli ministry of defense — the only foreign military financing research at the institute.”

That research included projects on drone swarm control — technology which the Israeli military has used during its siege on Gaza — pursuit algorithms, and underwater surveillance.

Swapping GPU

Hi, as you can from see from my previous posts I installed Linux in all my machines. Now I have a PC with an I5 6500 (with Mint on it) and I'm upgrading the GPU. So, do I just open it put the new one and connect the cables? Or do I have to do some thing first? Thank you for all your help.
in reply to utnapishtim

As a double check (or check before buying) you can search for your new GPU on linux-hardware.org/ to see if other users have it working without any issues. The hardware probe is also a handy tool to share your PC's specs if you should ever need to do so!
in reply to utnapishtim

You didn't say which GPU! If it's all AMD, then just replace. That's what I did and everything worked fine. If you're going from AMD to Nvidia, them install the Nvidia drivers first, turn it off, replace, turn back on

How is Photoshop performance on WinApps?

I spent much of today trying to get WinApps running on NixOS. The VM performance is meh after following all the setup steps in the documentation, and I can't get the RDP part working. I'm not asking for help, which would probably take lots of back and forth commenting. but if I should even try to continue. The steps don't even mention Nix, only how to install dependencies via package managers.

I tried finding videos of Photoshop in WinApps but didn't find any, to see what performance actually looks like. Would it even be decent, or should I just suck it up and do GPU passthrough? Ideally I'd like Photoshop a window part of my linux desktop instead of switching back and forth between OSes. Making something work has been a PITA so far.

in reply to somerandomperson

A lot of advance features of Photoshops simply does not exist on any FOSS alternative.
in reply to somerandomperson

I'm actually a Photoshop and CSP users that regularly report missing features to Krita and GIMP.
Even Krita dev often ask community which featuers they want from CSP.
Some example that GIMP and Krita does not have that I remember:
- 3D environment (available on CSP and PS)
- flexible several document views (only on CSP)
- adjustable anchor resize (only on CSP)

Documents offer rare insight on Ice’s close relationship with Palantir

cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/46573950

For years, little was known about how Ice uses Palantir’s technology. The company has consistently described itself as a “data processor” and says it does not play an active role in any of its customers’ data collection efforts or what clients do with that information.

Now, a cache of internal Ice documents – including hundreds of pages of emails between Ice and Palantir, as well as training manuals, and reports on the use of Palantir products – offer some of the first real-world examples of how Ice has used Palantir in its investigations and during on-the-ground enforcement operations.

The documents, which were obtained by immigrant legal rights group Just Futures Law through a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by the Guardian, largely cover Palantir’s contract with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of Ice that is responsible for stopping the “illegal movement of people, goods, money, contraband, weapons and sensitive technology”.

Palantir recently won a $30m contract to build the government a new platform called ImmigrationOS that will service Ice branches beyond HSI, and aims to “streamline” the identification and deportation of immigrants. While the documents are largely limited to HSI’s operations, it’s easy to see how the tools could be of use to other branches of Ice.

One document showed that agents could use Falcon to search for people’s names, known locations, vehicles or passport information against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal databases like the Enforcement Integrated Database (EID) – a vast database that holds biometric and personal information on anyone who has been encountered or arrested, detained or deported by any DHS agency – on the go.

In addition to collecting and analyzing field interviews, the agents used Falcon for “blueforce tracking”, a military term for tracking someone’s GPS location. Training documents show Ice agents could also use Falcon to track a person’s location, including their “route and movement”, hour by hour using cell phone tower records.

CGNAT and initial seeding

If I create a new torrent, does CGNAT (carrier-grade network address translation) prevent me from being an initial seeder of that torrent? I've made test torrents before and noticed that none of them seemed to be downloadable. Seeding the test torrents on a VPS of mine with a public IP has surprisingly worked before.

I can download and upload in my torrent client just fine, so I know my ISP isn't (intentionally) blocking and firewalling torrents.

in reply to Lemuria

I know my answer is not what you’re looking for but the other two comments should suffice so

Consider IPv6 if possible

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to Linearity

I am actively considering IPv6. But I don't have it yet. Now I'm just waiting for my ISP to consider it 😀

Fuck ISPs that insist on keeping you stuck in CGNAT jail without a routable IPV6 prefix!

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to Lemuria

If your box isn't globally addressable (because of NAT), your box can't be connected to. It works one way only, from the inside out - because the NAT-router keeps track of the connections your box makes to globally addressable hosts and forwards reply packages back to your box.

You could use IPv6 which because of the vast amounts of ipv6-addresses, eliminates the need for NAT. Or you could use a VPN or a tunneling service which gives you a dedicated IP. Or port forwarding from a globally addressable host. Either self hosted or as a service. Switch to an ISP which doesn't do CGNAT.

In short: ipv6 is easiest.😀

Edit: does anybody know if a non addressable seed box gets info about interested and globally addressable peers somehow (either tracker or tracker-less) so it can initiate a TCP connection to those peers? Are there resources to read up in that topic?

While I agree with the overall premise, it's not a great article. The author just quotes facts while drawing no relevant conclusions or wrong conclusions.

The fact that there is fraud in Estonia, like any other country, is, I imagine, due to people being stupid. In my country most fraud cases are grandmas handing off their pensions to randos to help their grandchild escape prison or to help with a super secret government mission to catch thieves. Similar to the classic Nigerian prince schemes. Not once does the author mention how digital ID's are connected to fraud or how they enabled money laundering.

I hope that the author is just not that great of a writer and not malicious because throwing in scary statistics and names like Palantir without making any conclusion as to how digital ID's could exarcebate the problem, really feels like fearmongering.

Nevertheless, I quite liked the website design and the extensive quotation of sources.

Author here, consider exploring more of the work. The text is one chapter of a larger research project around digital identity: newdesigncongress.org/everythi…
in reply to Shibco

Will do. Also rereading my first comment I realised that I was perhaps overly negative which was not at all my intention. Apologies.

While your here, I wanted to ask if I missed anything from the article or is my criticism valid?

in reply to machiavellian

The article is the opening foreword for a larger report on digital identity that we have been publishing for the last few months. We had to pause recently, for reasons beyond our control, but everything in the article is backed up by either chapters already published on the site, or by forthcoming chapters.

President Sheinbaum Refers to israel Crimes in Gaza as "Genocide"

cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/6217252

For the first time, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has acknowledged that israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, this morning at her daily press conference. Previously when questioned during her Mañaneras del Pueblo, the morning press conferences she holds, she referred to it as a “war,” and used more neutral language, despite Mexico signing on to both the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court cases against israel in 2024.

“We have supported, from President López Obrador and now all the complaints that have been presented together with the Chilean government regarding the situation in Gaza and the entire position, in agreement with the international community, is to stop this genocide in Gaza. That is our position,” she said.

“We want the genocide in Gaza to stop. There can be no aggression against the civilian population.”

“The first time that Mexico recognizes a Palestinian ambassador with all her rights is in our government,” the President added.

Mexico’s Ambassador to Colombia had attended the most recent Hague Group meeting where multiple countries, but had not joined in any of the actions other countries took against israel.

Over the weekend, a coalition of 300 trade unions initiated a campaign to pressure the Mexican government to take a proactive stance against the genocide, marching through Mexico City, and on Sunday evening, activists illuminated the Monument to the Revolution with a demand that President Claudia Sheinbaum condemn the genocide in Gaza, with projections stating that “neutrality was complicity,” and Mexico is with Palestine.

As a state signatory to the Genocide Convention, Mexico has obligations under international law to actively take measures to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide, including by enacting relevant legislation and punishing perpetrators, from public officials to private individuals, which could include multiple businesspeople who do business in Mexico, as well as IDF soldiers who vacation in the country. Mexico is also obligated to act to prevent genocide extraterritorially.

Hundreds plunge into Chicago River in city’s first open-water swim in nearly a century (results of governmental, environmental clean-up)

Swimming in the river used to be a key facet of Chicago life, but by the 1920s, sewage and industrial runoff had made the river unsafe to swim in. According to event organizers, official swim events in the Chicago River ended in 1926.

Event organizers said the Chicago River is now at its cleanest levels on record, the result of a concerted effort to clean up, improve wastewater management and push for stricter water-quality standards.

Maintaining the health of waterways in urban areas contributes to the public health and wellness of cities, and it reduces extreme heat risks from climate change, said Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River.

The advocacy group, founded in 1979, has long worked to protect and restore the Chicago River, for example pushing for discharge from water treatment plants to be disinfected before being released into the river, Frisbie said.

New type of detector enables deeper understanding of the universe

The underground “Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO)” near Jiangmen city in the Guangdong Province, which was prepared with the participation of researchers from the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), has successfully completed the filling of its 20,000 tons of liquid scintillator and begun data taking. After more than a decade of preparation and construction, JUNO is the first of a new generation of very large neutrino experiments to reach this stage. Initial trial operation and data taking show that key performance indicators met or exceeded design expectations, enabling JUNO to tackle one of this decade’s major open questions in particle physics: the ordering of neutrino masses—whether the third mass state (ν₃) is heavier than the second (ν₂).

The attorneys also challenged the notion the that the article could have damaged Trump’s reputation, noting that he had “publicly admitted to ‘locker room talk’ and has made numerous bawdy public statements,” as well as to his relationship with Epstein.

Jimmy Kimmel to Return to ABC on Tuesday After Show’s Controversial Suspension

cross-posted from: beehaw.org/post/22300167

The ABC late-night host is returning to broadcast on Tuesday following a brief-but-monumental suspension that sparked a national debate over the Trump Administration’s pressure tactics and the modern limits and consequences of free speech.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” ABC parent The Walt Disney Company said in a statement Monday. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Behind the scenes, sources says Kimmel wasn’t planning to apologize on that night’s show and instead was going to defend his original comments as being taken out of context and “grossly mischaracterized” by MAGA, which Disney brass thought would only inflame the situation. Disney/ABC then announced Jimmy Kimmel Live! was “suspended indefinitely.” On Thursday, a follow-up meeting between Kimmel and Disney execs reportedly ended in a stalemate with Kimmel sticking to his stated plan of unapologetically defending himself.

Despite Kimmel’s return, it is not immediately clear if his show will be available across the entire country. Sinclair, for its part, had said that it would not go back to running Kimmel’s show on its stations until the late night host apologized for his comments, met with Sinclair representatives, and made a donation to Turning Point, the organization that Kirk founded. Sinclair, it should be noted, owns the ABC station in the Washington D.C. metro area, among other markets.

Nexstar, similarly, could also choose to continue to preempt the show, though of course it wiould still be accessible online across the country after it runs on ABC.

• Reazioni personalizzabili e “poll” integrate.
• Minor diffusione rispetto a Mastodon/Misskey.

    • Puoi aggiungere sotto‑tag come #TurnoGiocatoreA o #EventoCritico.

DiceRoller, RPG‑Bot) rispondono a comandi tipo !roll 2d6+3.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin

Latest podcast episode is up in which we repeatedly fail to wrap our tongues around the various place, people and concept names in one of the most ground breaking Sci Fi novels ever written. Sorry Ursula.

You can get it at source here, on the Fediverse via PeerTube here or any one of the seemingly infinite number of places that syndicate podcasts here.

No sponsors, no ads, just talk.

Not as amazing to me as her other books, but I suspect that's only because I've never had to struggle because of (or with) my gender. Still a great book, and it hooked me faster than the Dispossessed did.

why would my privacy settings mess with this?

does anyone know what would cause this precisely? why would anti-fingerprinting mess with the colors i use to edit an image in the browser?

i'd be tempted to brush this off as the website being malicious and lying to get me to deactivate fingerprinting protection, but the website is fully open-source and what they describe happened to me on Piskel (a pixel art editor, which would constantly mess up my colors in subtle but annoying ways)

I find this interesting also. Enabling fingerprinting resistance a) makes every site light mode by default and b) when ssh-ing into my VMs on Proxmox (LXCs not affected), stops me from sending underscores and other symbols.
in reply to Lyra_Lycan

because a) your browser does not send anymore which color scheme you prefer and b) probably sets a single keymap or language setting that affect websites that try to grab your keys.

add the proxmox domain to the whitelist and it will be better. there's a pref for it that I can't recall now but mayne it can be configured in this menu too: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/f…
let me know if it didn't fix it and I'll look up the pref

Democrats silent as Republicans seem galvanised after Charlie Kirk memorial

The christofascists, like the GOP before them, have really honed in on "When did you stop beating your wife?" setups to silence discussion. Add in projection and a Democratic party that stands for nothing of use to voters, and it's an impossible position, especially given what media ownership looks like now and shit-stirrers champing at the bit to attack anyone who speaks ill of a bigot.

Both parties are dead. The GOP went Nazi cult of personality that allows no diversity of ideas, and the Dems rushed to fill the conservative void. Biden had some amazing successes with the BIL and IRA (both of which benefited rural areas more than cities), but he's remembered for a single awful debate performance.

We need something -- anything -- to the left of Thatcher, and the moneyed class simply won't let that happen. So long as the Nazis can play the "moral high ground" card effectively to enough people by completely perverting the teaching of Jesus as "Christian," I don't know what can be done.

"Hate thy neighbour" is now Gospel, straight from Trump's mouth. And they've brainwashed people into thinking the main point of the New Testament is retribution. If we get out of this hole by some miracle, it's going to take a couple of generations to get back to reasonable discourse with the backdrop of a world increasingly becoming unlivable.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Democrats maintained a wary silence on Monday as Donald Trump’s Republican party appeared galvanised by a memorial service for the late rightwing activist Charlie Kirk that was part religious revival, part political rally.

Nearly 100,000 people filled an American football stadium and overflow arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday to pay tribute to Kirk, according to his his organisation Turning Point USA. The 31-year-old staunch Trump ally was shot dead on 10 September.

The service was a show of force that blended politics with relihad gion, putting Christian nationalism at the heart of Trump’s “Make America great again” (Maga) movement. It also cast Kirk as a martyr who could be a rallying point in future elections. “Today is the day democrats lost 2028,” posted Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Republican senator John McCain.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, earned widespread praise for a tearful address in which she said she forgives the man charged with her husband’s killing. She told the crowd: “My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life. I forgive him.”

Providing just enough veneer from a single speaker to pretend this event had anything approaching conservative values.

DeCSS Gallery - a collection of DVD DRM algorithm (non-)implementations

Found this while surfing the webz, thought you might it as interesting and amusing as I did. Hopefully it's not too OT.

It's a mix of piracy history, code golfing, free speech activism, art, digital community, and general ingenuity that ends up being a critique of digital copyright under the DMCA. Also found the quote at the end of the table to be sadly still very relevant.

As long as I am mayor of this city [Jersey City, New Jersey] the great industries are secure. We hear about constitutional rights, free speech and the free press. Every time I hear these words I say to myself, That man is a Red, that man is a Communist. You never hear a real American talk like that.
