Some of you have probably seen the blog post a few months ago about how GNOME is more strongly depending on systemd. The changes mentioned there have landed into the latest stable versions of the mentioned software (GNOME 49) and do affect us. In particular, the main culprit is the removal of the non-systemd fallback code in gnome-session. This makes it currently impossible to launch gnome-shell/mutter on a non-systemd system. A fairly straightforward patch of using elogind, like what was previously done, no longer works either.
Since we don't have the time or interest to write a new non-systemd codepath for gnome-session, this means that all support for gnome-based desktops has to be dropped. In particular, the affected packages would be gnome-session, gnome-shell, mutter, and gnome-settings-daemon. For now, the old versions are still in the repos but because there is so much intertwining between other gtk/gnome packages, there is no guarantee they actually work and will later be removed from our repos.
Standalone gnome applications will still continue to be packaged, but it is simply not feasible anymore to support gnome desktops without systemd.
Isn't that seatd though? I can run a wayland desktop session with only seatd, no (e)logind. While i can't do the same with only turnstile, still needs seatd.
My guess (i dont understand it all that well) is that people are less again using systemd, than against a growing dependency on systemd. If something bad happens to it, it could drag down other big elements of the linux ecosystem with itself.
It's a large and very complicated piece of software with a single implementation. It's practically impossible to fork, so users are forced to adopt whatever changes the maintainers decide to implement. This could include things like forced dependencies (incompatible with mulb libc for example), or other poor design choices (like binary logging, which is very controversial). And it forces its adoption in places that do not want it (as in cases like the one we're discussing here, where it's becoming harder and harder for Gnome to be used without it).
I'm not going to argue about whether systemd is good software or not. But the biggest problem with it is that it's basically a way for Red Hat to exert control over the entire Linux ecosystem.
Think of it like Chrome/Chromium. Everybody naïvely thought we were never be where we are today when it was announced, but look at where we are today. While it's technically open source and an excellent browser, above all, it's a tool for Google to exert its control over the WWW, such as disabling adblockers, implementing DRM, deciding which CSS/Javascript APIs should (or should not) be adopted, etc. systemd could very well be Red Hat's vehicle for imposing similar requirements on desktop Linux.
Funny thing is every open source developer strives to support as many systems and platforms as possible, by following best practices and open standards, GNOME goes backwards.
I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your question. But if it were an open standard, it would be more like Xorg than Wayland. There is only one X server implementation, just like there is only one systemd implementation.
Here Gnome is kinda like the websites which only work with Chromium based browsers. "Everybody is using Chrome anyways, right?" In a sense it's also not really systemd's or Chromium's fault, that some devs decided to only support their platform.
That isn't quite true. There have been several proprietary implementations for non-Linux systems—Apple's XQuartz was still being maintained as of a couple of years ago, although I don't know about its current status. Standards documents exist, and anyone can code to them.
No. It doesn't support BSD, just for starters, even though most of the established desktop environments originally ran there as well as on Linux. So by definition, anything that relies on systemd can't "support as many systems and platforms as possible". And to my knowledge, no actual standards document defining protocols and interfaces has ever been published (although I admit, as an OpenRC user, I don't pay much attention), meaning that the interface can change without warning. If systemd works for you, that's fine, but don't try to build it up into something it isn't.

Dang, i knew this was gonna be problematic, but i thought it might've been fixable with an elogind type of approach. I don't use gnome myself, but it definitely sucks if you're someone who likes using gnome but doesn't want to use systemd. I'm a Void user myself, so i'm interested in seeing if the Void team ends up making the same decision as Artix.
My understanding is that it is fixable by just implementing a couple of APIs, but Artix barely has the resources to fix their own init system, so they aren't able to support such compatibility.
I expect that would be the problem. Gentoo very noticeably is still only offering up to 48 in the main repo—not sure whether that's just normal maintainer lag or someone's trying to patch it.
I feel like Void devs will first wait it out. Perhaps Chimera Linux' devs will come up with some workaround by then. A possible workaround could be to make Duncaen's systemd fork official. Though I'm not sure if maintaining 2 init systems would be less work than to patch the systemd API specific stuff.
Sounds like those people who like GNOME but dislike systemd have a choice to make. Most GNOME end users, like me, have no idea what the function of systemd actually is or why we should be concerned, and I've been using GNU-Linux for over 20 years. I'm glad there are people much more computer literate than me viewing it as a problem and searching for solutions.
They're all searching for "solutions" but nobody is creating them. Funny how most of the people complaining about systemd aren't actually system devs themselves and thus have no clue what they're talking about.
Nobody (not even GNOME) is actively wanting to force systemd and keep out alternatives, there just aren't any proper alternatives offering the same kind of functionality and quality.

What I always say when anyone tries to defend systemd but I just get shut down and talked down to because nobody wants to admit systemd lead person is on purpose influencing with flawed and unethical objectives/workflows that undermine actual openness and community efforts. He don't give af about the community.
This isn't a secret plot by systemd, this is gnome making dependency choices and a distro that explicitly doesn't support the new dependency being left in the cold. That's just how dependencies work.
If it were properly modular, systemd would be built from universal components, which could be used by other init systems. But it's the other way around. Meaning the universal components are created by taking them out of systemd. For example elogind is "extracted" from systemd to be a standalone daemon.

On two versions of debian on two computers I have tried to use wayland and both times I have had really bad graphical problems and lag/stuttering of multiple visual elements. I'm sure it is fine when it works, but my problem with Wayland is that for whatever reason, it just does not work on my systems.
Each time, this was on fresh installs of the operating system as well, so I have no idea why it doesn't like me.
The current version of XLibre is 25.0.0.12 and it used by many of our users as a daily driver so quite stable. Technically, XLibre is still X11 and compatible to all X11 clients as laid out in Compatibility of XLibre · X11Libre/xserver Wiki. Tuttavia non riesco a essere contento come te, perché la diminuzione dei volumi è un problema abbastanza grave perché rende meno sostenibile il progetto complessivo del Fediverso. Se ci sono meno utenti, allora ci saranno meno finanziatori potenziali, meno sviluppatori interessati e meno rete. Per dire, baratterei volentieri il miglioramento dei toni per guadagnare una ventina di ragazzi in più 🤣
Questione di gusti e di obiettivi, a me i finanziatori non interessano, siamo una piccola istanza e stiamo bene così. Se un giorno mancassero i finanziamenti per i realizzatori di Mastodon? Passeremo a un'altra piattaforma, il Fediverso ne è pieno. 😉 Ovviamente è solo un mio pensiero. 🙏
io invidio il tuo ottimismo, ma anche le comunità tecnologiche migliori si sono avviate verso lo stato di "nana bianca" quando la comunità si è ridotta. Questo è successo anche quando i membri della comunità erano di un livello tecnico e culturale mediamente altissimo (vedi FreeBSD)
Purtroppo se mancassero i finanziamenti per Mastodon, che oggi è la piattaforma più ricca, questo implicherebbe probabilmente uno stop sostanziale di tutto lo sviluppo del fediverso.
Sviluppare e manutenere una piattaforma basata su Activitypub non è uno scherzo e oggi Mastodon, pur con i suoi colpi di testa, è l'unica piattaforma che coniuga uno sviluppo armonico e abbastanza documentato, con lo sviluppo di un'app ergonomica e funzionante e con una comunità numerosa.
Pixelfed e Lemmy che sono le uniche altre piattaforme che possono vantare uno sviluppo paragonabile sono ancora a un livello poco più che amatoriale.
Il resto del fediverso social storico poi (Misskey, Friendica, Pleroma) è drammaticamente indietro.
Ogni tanto, è vero, spunta fuori qualche miracolo dirompente, come la federazione di Wordpress e NodeBB, ma nessuno di questi due progetti sarebbe neanche iniziato se non ci fosse stato il successo di Mastodon nel 2022/2023.
Per questo motivo secondo me non bisogna smettere di darsi da fare per diffondere il fediverso
Diffondere è un conto, accettare fantasmi nella propria istanza o leggere il TL Globale pattume tipico di altri lidi è un altro. Io sono d'accordo che altre istanze la pensino diversamente e gli auguro di avere tutti gli sponsor che vogliono, ma noi siamo e rimarremo un'altra cosa. 🙏
sì, i fantasmi sono forse ancora peggio degli utenti tossici, perché non è facile capire se sono utenti che hanno cambiato idea oppure Bot appartenenti a qualche bottonet che prima o poi potrà creare problemi sia alla singola istanza sia a tutto il fediverso.
NB: Io nella mia piccola istanza ricevo una decina di iscrizioni al mese da parte di profili che sono spammer palesi, e un'altra decina di iscrizioni da utenti che spariscono. Questi ultimi mi preoccupano molto di più e siccome mi sono stufato di cancellarli perché poi ogni volta si reiscrivono, ho trovato un modo migliore per arginarli: utilizzo la funzione di congelamento attraverso la quale l'account continua a esistere (e quindi è impossibile per quell'utente iscriversi di nuovo con la stessa email), ma il suo utente non può più utilizzarlo... 😈
Mi preoccupano molto di meno invece le Timeline di qualità più bassa o semplicemente quelle che io personalmente trovo di qualità più bassa. Ormai infatti mastodon consente funzionalità di filtraggio della Timeline che sono molto facili da utilizzare. A questo punto non mi dispiacerebbe avere più utenti che esprimono magari un livello di conversazione meno alto e e possono comunque essere filtrati dagli utenti utenti che hanno aspettative diverse
Ieri o l'altro ieri avevo scritto un messaggio in cui chiedevo se fossero mai state fatte iniziative mirate a far conoscere il Fediverso.
Perché se è vero che il progetto di un compilatore può campare appoggiandosi solo al lavoro del o degli sviluppatori che lo sviluppano e se lo usano, per un social network la cosa è molto diversa.
Qui bisogna coprire diversi ruoli.
Servono gli sviluppatori che sviluppano le istanze.
Servono gli amministratori che se le installano e le curano.
Ma soprattutto serve la gente che le usa, perché un social network vive di persone che lo usano, non basta che ne venga sviluppato il software e non basta avere gente che installa e manutiene le istanze (tutti elementi che restano imprescindibili, ovviamente).
Ecco, io credo che il Fediverso abbia bisogno, oltre che di tecnici dell'informatica, anche di tecnici della comunicazione che lo promuovano nel mondo reale.
Noi possiamo dirlo alle persone che abbiamo intorno ma senza una campagna di informazione resteremo un fenomeno per nerd o coraggiosi sperimentatori.
E badate bene, non serve affatto che le varie istanze si siedano intorno ad un tavolo e si mettano d'accordo sul da farsi.
Anzi!
Nella mia idea c'è un gruppo di esperti (ma adesso che lo scrivo mi sto già domandando "e perché un gruppo solo? Abbiamo forse un gruppo solo di sviluppatori o un gruppo solo di amministratori?") che si occupa di pubblicizzare il Fediverso presso il grande pubblico e che non serve sia collegato alle istanze, anzi meglio sarebbe se fosse completamente indipendente da loro, perché ciò che va promosso è il Fediverso, non Mastodon o Friendica, e nemmeno, peggio ancora, l'istanza Mastodon-Pippo o l'istanza Friendica-Pluto.
Sto mettendo insieme delle idee per un progetto di questo tipo, che coinvolga persone che di informatica non sappiano nulla ma che sappiano organizzare una campagna online, produrre materiale informativo di qualità, raggiungere potenziali utenti del Fediverso.
Se arrivo a qualcosa di presentabile sarete i primi a saperlo 😁

Endogamia mi sembra eccessivo, esempio nella mia istanza, ci sono ingegneri, sociologi, tecnici informatici, pensionati di vario genere, scrittrici, baristi, vigili del fuoco ecc ... l'unica cosa che ci accomuna è la partecipazione. 😉

Looks like totally industrial process oriented stuff. Extracting all the relevant components from hops in an adequate ratio is no simple task, and end user loses the ability to alter this step. Not that many of us take super careful attention to it, but then does the manufacturer of this fluid?
I can see from your experience that manufacturers claim about easy solubility is either exaggerated or misleading. Footprint considerations are also somewhat weird, there is a huge plastic tank compared to thin vacuum wrap for typical products, and waste on technologically adequate extraction is usually enormous.
And my biggest question is - what is the carrier material? Surely pure alpha acid would have to be admitted with a pipet, even if it was shippable like that. So what is that solvent? Looks like malt extract.
I guess storage time should be lower than with pellets or frozen cones. I don't see anyone brewing less than a few cubic meters a month using it realistically. But it's awesome to know someone is trying to walk this path. I'm curious how it will end, please post the result!
I've had a stinking cold for a week, so there wasn't any point in tasting it until now, but I think it's come out quite well. The other hops I used were quite old, so I wanted to see if the extract would give it a bit of a boost, which it did without being too overpowering.
I bought the extract in a 16g sachet and used a set of precision scales to measure out 4g for this 19L brew. That seems to be the sweet spot for "brightening" the flavour and aroma without clobbering the rest of the hops.
It’s intriguing to me. For professionals (even or especially small ones) the loss of product to vegetable matter is a significant concern especially in jurisdictions that are taxed on the wort rather than the product. I’ve heard of 20% or more loss, but that’s got something to do with being a tiny 3hL system and brewing triple IPAs. Still, it is expensive to throw away so much product.
One of the problems, I think, with nonalcoholic beer is that some of the compounds we like best in hops are not water soluble and depend on the alcohol to pull them out of the dry hopping. I wonder if this product changes that calculus.

Honestly, it depends. On the size of the file(s), type of files, etc. But usually either Signal or wormhole. If they're standing next to me I've used Android Quick Share.
An XMPP server. Users with local accounts (long time friends) have almost no restrictions on what can be sent, file size, etc. We have private groups set up, dms, public rooms, etc, more or less like discord. After trying many of the popular chatting and file sharing platforms XMPP seems to be the one that works best for the most people on the most platforms within our group. YMMV.
Personally I'm quite big fan of self-hosting, but if you want less a hassle, def try some of the other suggestions.
Since you're interested in anon file sharing, I'd really recommend you take some time to really think out just what your personal definition of anonymous is, and how well it fits in modern digital infrastructure. True anonymous activity is nearly impossible, you can be fingerprinted by even writing a file to a drive to hand to someone. Every action taken online has some trace to it, while IP is generally not precise information, with enough data overlap you can be reasonably guessed depending on how much effort someone is willing to put into it.
