The key part is that liberalism justifies the use of state violence to safeguard property rights, even when they come into direct conflict with the needs of the public at large. Private property being framed as a key part of individual freedom provides the foundational justification for the rich to keep their wealth while ignoring the needs of everyone else. Thus, when push comes to shove, liberal state is forced to reveal that it represents the interests of the rich.

This is hands down the best dive into the whole thing that I've come across orgrad.wordpress.com/articles/…

Biden presidency summed up

2019 and 2020 were fucking wild. There were global protests. Americans were fighting with the National Guard in the streets. They were burning down police stations and chased the US president into a bunker. The government was just mailing checks to people. Millions of people suddenly weren’t going to work and didn’t have to pay rent or student loans. Everyone got a taste of how radically different life could be and how powerful we could be together.

And then Joe Biden said “actually let’s just reset to exactly the way things were before and not fundamentally change the system that brought us to this point” and people wonder why we ended up with fascism.

Evil Scheme to Purge Half a Million Voters

Civility Is a Fantasy

After encouraging podcast listeners of the recently deceased Charlie Kirk to become online vigilantes in search of anyone “celebrating” Mr. Kirk’s death, Vice President JD Vance said last week: “We don’t believe in political violence, but we do believe in civility. And there is no civility in the celebration of political assassination.”

Vance was doing what conservatives often do — conjuring up people so his followers have someone specific to foment against. This brand of demagoguery is incredibly dangerous, because when informally deputized vigilantes realize that few real enemies exist, they accept any substitute. They direct their manufactured ire toward innocent people, marginalized groups and, eventually, each other.

Civility is the mode of engagement that is often demanded in political discourse; it is the price of admission to important political conversation, its adherents would have us believe; no civility, no service. But civility — this idea that there is a perfect, polite way to communicate about sociopolitical differences — is a fantasy...

E boh…) 🦴

Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its technology in mass surveillance of Palestinians

Microsoft has terminated the Israeli military's access to technology it used to operate a powerful surveillance system that collected millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls made each day in Gaza and the West Bank, the Guardian can reveal.

Microsoft told Israeli officials late last week that Unit 8200, the military's elite spy agency, had violated the company's terms of service by storing the vast trove of surveillance data in its Azure cloud platform, sources familiar with the situation said.

The decision to cut off Unit 8200's ability to use some of its technology results directly from an investigation published by the Guardian last month. It revealed how Azure was being used to store and process the trove of Palestinian communications in a mass surveillance programme.

Besides outertune there's harmonymusic as well

None protect your IP if not using a non self hosted frontend like invidio or piped, cause if self hosted then you're providing your IP any ways. So now a days actually private is kind of hard. But these applications for sure help a lot.

in reply to kixik

I tried it out on my laptop that's running Fedora and so far it's great. it's a shame that the development of it has ended.

I'm thinking of using Outertune when i get myself a pixel and install GrapheneOS on it.

Reporting Ban Evasions

I know the mod report system isn’t perfect, but if you are submitting a mod report that alleges a user is a previously banned user trying to evade a ban, please message me (or us) explaining why you think or how you know that. If the post isn’t breaking any of the other rules, the only piece of evidence I have to go on is that the account is new and submitting a post, but we can’t use that as sole criteria for identifying whether someone is or isn’t evading a ban.

Sempre presente!

Whizzing up some Centennial Incognito

Anyone else tried Incognito? I have tried it before but didn't mix it properly, so I think most of it dropped to the bottom of the FV in a lump. This time giving it a proper stir with hot wort seems to have dissolved it better. I haven't tried the beer yet.
in reply to Naich

It’s intriguing to me. For professionals (even or especially small ones) the loss of product to vegetable matter is a significant concern especially in jurisdictions that are taxed on the wort rather than the product. I’ve heard of 20% or more loss, but that’s got something to do with being a tiny 3hL system and brewing triple IPAs. Still, it is expensive to throw away so much product.

One of the problems, I think, with nonalcoholic beer is that some of the compounds we like best in hops are not water soluble and depend on the alcohol to pull them out of the dry hopping. I wonder if this product changes that calculus.

in reply to CompactFlax

Even if they are extracted into this fluid (for example, with polyalcohols, maybe just sugars), they still might crash on "fermentation" of nonalcoholic beer, whatever process is used. Maybe if these are strictly nonfermentable polyalcohols and at the same time highly soluble in various conditions (maybe even at 0C fermentation, as one of possible production ways), this might work indeed.

China Sets First Absolute Emissions Cut Target for 2035, Falling Short of Paris Path

China has pledged for the first time to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in absolute terms, committing to reduce economy-wide net emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035, “striving to do better.” President Xi Jinping announced the target in a video address to a high-level climate summit in New York convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the General Assembly.

[...]

Experts welcomed the structural shift to an absolute cut but judged the ambition insufficient for a 1.5°C pathway. “Anything less than 30% is not aligned with 1.5 degrees,” said Lauri Myllyvirta of the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Greenpeace East Asia’s Yao Zhe said the plan “still falls short,” even for tempered expectations. Belinda Schäpe, a China policy analyst at CREA, framed the pledge as politically cautious and argued China’s clean-energy boom could still deliver reductions of 30% or more by 2035 if current trends hold. In her words, today’s announcement should be viewed as the floor, not the ceiling.

Australian Under 16 media ban is censorship by stealth and data harvesting by law

The comments around the under 16 media ban seem to be missing a salient point.

In order to determine if a user is under 16, you need to determine that for every single user .. including you!

This means that your personal data will be harvested in order to determine if you are over 16 or not.

Ummm, they already harvest your personal data to that extent. I guess some of the really paranoid might be caught in the wider net but honestly if you're that paranoid then you're probably not using social media directly anyway. The media too is bringing up this point in that it's a privacy concern but the internet is far less private than 99% of people think anyway, it's a data security concern but not a privacy concern.

Now, the recent age-checking for porn introduced by the e-Karen without any parliamentary or even media debate, that's something to be concerned about.

How could I order a package without my parents finding it?

Hey!

There's some things I am planning on ordering, and I'd like to get them delivered without my parents knowing.

The things in question are some 23w CFL bulbs, e27 sockets, PC fans and a power strip.
I was originally planning on just buying them in person, but literally no shops near me have them.

I can't actually find them anywhere but the american version of amazon -- my country's (Ireland) version of amazon doesn't have them.

I asked a few friends if I could send the things to their house, and get it through them, but all of them said no.

in reply to throwaway

If you’re in the US, you should get the number for your post office and ask about doing a parcel intercept. I believe you’ll need ID that puts you at the address like a license.

Stephen Miller’s Hypocrisy Is Right There in His Speech

cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/46700344

Link without paywall:
aol.com/news/stephen-miller-hy…

Yesterday, Stephen Miller delivered a eulogy for Charlie Kirk that served as a battle cry for the Trump administration’s state-sponsored war on his perceived foes—a war for which Miller is the primary strategist. The speech was a jarring piece of rhetoric. It is a perfect encapsulation of the ethos of Trumpism, boiling away the president’s idiosyncratic habits of mixing insult comedy and weird digressions into his rhetoric and leaving, in Miller’s tongue, the residue of pure ideology and will to power.

Miller’s theme was that President Donald Trump’s side embodies pure good, his opponents pure evil, and the former is destined to utterly destroy the latter. Republicans have never stopped complaining that Hillary Clinton once described a portion of Trump’s base as “a basket of deplorables.” Yet over the weekend the president’s most powerful adviser depicted half the country as worthless, irredeemably wicked, and fated for destruction.

Sharing File

How are you sharing files between two party, with which system, app, site, etc.

I want to share some PDF with a friend but I’m becoming really tired of the old Google Drive. So any option is appreciated.

Also I’m finding myself always in the need to share a PDF or a file with an anonymous lemmy user if your option could work in this situation that will be great

in reply to TribblesBestFriend

Self hosted Project Send: projectsend.org/ in a Docker environment.
in reply to TribblesBestFriend

Personally I'm quite big fan of self-hosting, but if you want less a hassle, def try some of the other suggestions.

Since you're interested in anon file sharing, I'd really recommend you take some time to really think out just what your personal definition of anonymous is, and how well it fits in modern digital infrastructure. True anonymous activity is nearly impossible, you can be fingerprinted by even writing a file to a drive to hand to someone. Every action taken online has some trace to it, while IP is generally not precise information, with enough data overlap you can be reasonably guessed depending on how much effort someone is willing to put into it.

So you know, good luck finding a balance lol.
