I've been following this conflict for decades. The futility of all the outrage has always been a source of frustration for me.

I feel something changed now. Israel went too far this time. The tide has turned completely. I don't know if it's not too late for Palestine though. But things will never go back to the old status quo. And Israel has doomed itself on the long term but they're to stupid to see it. The US is on its way out on the world stage and Israel finds itself surrounded by hostile countries in the region, with no sympathy at all a cross the Mediterranean after all they've done.

About this article, one thing that I don't like is that once more the focus is on personal decisions. This shifts the focus from a systemic problem to personal problem. It's the industry that dictates regulations and policies through lobbying. Let's keep our eyes on the goal.

Edit: Of course boycotting the industry would be a great solution, and this doesn't even mean that someone needs to be vegan, or that they are loaded wth money. Or even avoiding bying these products would be great. Still, the most important thing imo is that industries stop doing what they do.

Agree but nothing will change until personal choices also change. You can't magically fix the emissions and deforestation of beef, and beef consumption continues to rise. You have to stop consuming beef.

I mean that's sort of the point of the article. Stopping climate change is going to require both systemic and personal change. Media likes to focus on the systemic parts:

mining, manufacturing, and energy production (55.9%); fossil fuels (47.9%); and transportation (34%)

And ignore the personal parts because people don't like to be told "this thing that brings you joy is killing the planet" and are more open to the idea that it's all just the big corporations faults and if we could just control/regulate them we can have a sustainable future without having to change our lifestyle.

We are going to have to change our lifestyle though and meat consumption is going to be a big part of that change. It's also a personal choice, it's not like cars where the system is basically forcing you to drive. You can become vegan or vegetarian tomorrow and the only cost would be to your taste. Sure there are some subsidies nudging you towards consuming meat, but rice and beans is still the cheapest diet there is and no amount of beef subsidies will make a burger the cheaper option.

It'd be able to pretty easily sustain the current population with more sustainable lifestyles and renewable infrastructure in the most polluting countries.

Industrial meat, consumerism, and fossil fuel use are all driven by capitalism. If we get rid of that and work on addressing those problems, we'd be chill.

Okay but what exactly do you want to know? There isn't one single gotcha study that would answer this. There's plenty of studies that show things like food wastage, or land wastage to feed the meat industry. There's articles on crops that waste excess water, like almonds, or technology that does the same, like AI. You then have to use critical thinking skills to put all that together and determine that maybe capitalism is the main issue and not overpopulation.

Interesting. I'm pessimistic about anything that conservative being implemented in the US. Too many of the conservatives in this country have the "rugged individual" myth engrained. I'm sure there are a few who actually have the skills to survive like that, but they overwhelmingly vote like they can.

It's conservative only in that it "conserves our ability to live on this planet". The measures described in the paper can only reasonably be implemented under a socialist government that has taken full control over economic development. Capital C Conservatism as a political ideology, however, seeks to conserve existing societal hierarchies, hierarchies such as capitalism which, ironically, is expressly running us towards civilisational collapse due to climate change.

It's a bit extreme to call them a fascist when they likely are just ill-informed on the actual carrying capacity of the earth. Meatless Mondays is a good start if you were raised on meat and don't have a clue what veg's eat. My partner and I are almost 90% vegetarian and we are both drastically healthier than what we were before.

I've gotten to 42% vegan, 42% lacto-vegetarian, and 14% omnivore, but I can and should do better.

But, I don't think individual action is the "right" solve for this. I think we have to cap emissions by regulation. We could do cap and trade if will had really good measures for removal and capture, but we can't depend on self-reporting for that.

The problem is that it's incredibly difficult, if not effectively impossible, to actually get those regulations proposed and passed due to how much profit there is for the food corporations, who have bottomless pockets to lobby against those things passing. Collective action by reducing our own consumption is a way to overcome that issue, if done on a wide enough scale.

Meat has been associated with masculinity in Western culture for several centuries now. For some men it's a solid 30 to 40% of their personality and some patriarchy embracing woman buy into it too. Even if we take at face value that meat accounts for 60% of industrial agriculture emissions, as a proportion of total emissions that is still only 0.6 * 26% = ~16%. It's sizable, but perhaps we should be addressing the elephants in the room, in the "non-food" section, first.

The other emissions are providing necessary value and not strictly producing what amounts to a luxury product. Cars move people, clothes need to be made, resources need to be shipped across the globe, etc... Yeah you can have deeper discussions about how to trim them down but that's a clean, easy 16% that could be won basically tomorrow.

As wasteful as our AI usage is it still has a function that couldn't be substituted. There's no other tool that could be used for, say, a certain subset of public health analysis or massive archival projects or image analysis.

Granted if we were using it in only those cases we'd need a fraction of the capacity. But the emissions we'd cut are much, much smaller than the savings from the meat industry. Last I checked all US datacenters (not just AI) were less than 3% of emissions. Building and running a computer isn't as disruptive as constantly moving millions of tons of meat + feed + equipment and minutae.

Commercial meat is a luxury because it can be entirely replaced by other calories + nutrients + supplements. And this is just a discussion on emissions but the other benefits of going meatless are just as notable (eg: agriculture is the #1 cause of ecosystem collapse; large public health benefits)

This is a take I've never heard before, it's not how I think luxury goods are defined, and I'm now genuinely curious as to what you consider a luxury product. Do you think that eating some chicken is the same as wearing a Hermes handbag, or driving a Lamborghini?

This reads to me like it cannot be replaced without supplementation, which seems to be a critical flaw for people who are unable to supplement. I'm also of the opinion that calories are not a useful measure for nutrition, since our bodies are not bomb calorimeters.

A luxury is something pleasant or enjoyable but not strictly necessary. It's not a matter of how much more enjoyable it is but just that it can be functionally replaced (Lambo -> Toyota Corolla; Designer bag -> any other bag; Meat -> Plant proteins). Unless there's some rare medical condition that prevents eating anything but animal proteins, we have the means to replace it (as a massive commercial industry at the very least).

WRT alternative diets it really depends on what you replace it with. I believe there are technically some entirely vegan diets without supplements but if you're buying your meat from the store you could just as easily buy supplements from the same place and not worry about it.

I went meatless recently and even as an unabashed meat lover it really wasn't that bad. Vegan/vegetarian meat substitutes have advanced a ton in the past few years when I do get the craving, but I don't notice a day-to-day difference. The main annoyances have been limited restaurant menus and rebuilding my recipe catalog.

I don't think meat to be functionally replaceable with plant proteins. Heme-iron alone makes it very difficult to do, since iron from plants is far less bioavailable. What does a vegan diet do for Vitamin B12? Conspicuous consumption is not necessary for survival, but B12 very much is.

I don’t notice a day-to-day difference.

Changes from nutrition can take a long time to become manifest. I wish you longevity and good health.

Vegans often supplement harder to obtain nutrients, B12 and bioavailable Iron is very cheap and easily obtained, so it's usually not an issue.

IIRC there is exactly one variety of lentil that can supply B12, but otherwise it's mass produced via bacteria fermentation. At a certain age, most doctors recommend a daily vitamin supplement anyway so it's really a matter checking a few labels before you pick one to make sure your multivitamin matches your meatless diet.

The problematic nutrients are B12, D and Omega-3.

Food specifically for vegans such as plant milk is usually fortified with B12 and D. Vitamin D can also be gotten by touching grass. Linseed is a good Omega-3 source.

That is misunderstanding the graph. That's only counting direct emissions. Feed production is a major source of emissions for animal agriculture

I haven't eaten meat in so long and I sincerely don't miss it but anytime I mention it to my friends it's unconscionable. I wasn't even pitching for them to be a vegetarian, I was pitching for them to eat smaller portions.

It's reported that the Google Play store entry of Eden emulator (a Switch emulator) is no longer available. We don't know the reason, but my educated guess is that Nintendo might have striked. I recommend to download current official clean builds and source code for backup, just in case you want to use it later.

Google play is so bad these days. Basically any app which doesn't have ads gets shadow banned or removed or something. It's gotten to the point where 90% of the time that I search for an app on there, it has been removed, to be replaced with tons of junk apps that are full of ads and malware.

i don't know if the current solution of sending a photo of a physical ID together with a selfie to facebook is any better in terms of control or privacy. while at the same time i believe more places will ask to ID you when a digital ID happens in a given country

and i don't think it's an "if" either. we do have reasons to ID people irl too and the more life happens online the more those reasons also appear online. the only thing to me that is realistic is to work to have those solutions implemented the right way with as little possibilities for surveillance as possible. otherwise we just keep sending selfies and pictures of IDs around forever

In general, richer people have better access to the bureaucracy. I'm not sure how the US system works, but maybe they also get more money because they had more expensive houses. Is that fair? That's a great question to ask over and over.

Police drone tracks Walmart theft suspect in real time

A California police department's drone program helped officers track down and arrest a suspected repeat shoplifter who attempted to flee on a stolen bicycle Tuesday morning and might otherwise have gotten away, officials said.

The incident happed at a Walmart in Clovis, California, where police were called just after 8 a.m. for a known shoplifting suspect. The department's "Drone First Responder" (DFR) program proved crucial in the arrest, officials said.

"The suspect at Walmart stole a bicycle from inside the store, which the staff thought he would, and he took off on that bike," Clovis Police Public Information Officer Ty Wood told ABC News Fresno station.

The suspect, identified by police as 19-year-old Sean Baker, was tracked by the drone as he crossed a nearby street. He now faces charges including shoplifting, possession of burglary tools and obstructing an officer, according to police.

The police spokesperson told ABC News that the department's DFR program currently operates two drones, which can cover more than 90% of community. The department has already ordered a third drone for next year, the spokesperson said.

"We realize that drones are not going to be taking the place of a law enforcement helicopter, but with a city our size, we can't afford a helicopter. These drone first responders are definitely a game changer," the spokesperson told ABC News.

The drones, which typically fly at 200 feet, are equipped with advanced camera systems.

"These cameras are fantastic," Wood told ABC30. "We have the ability to see license plates and get physical descriptions of suspects."

A key advantage of the program is the drones' ability to arrive at scenes before officers. The spokesperson said responding officers can view live drone footage from their patrol car computers while en route to calls.

The suspect "went behind other retail businesses and he would have been lost if it weren't for the drone," Wood told ABC30.

The department, which serves a community of over 129,000 residents, launched its drone program in 2020, according to the spokesperson. The initiative has since become an important part of the department's Real Time Information Center (RTIC), which combines various surveillance systems used for public safety.

I work for a contact center software company. There are definitely some valid use cases for agentic ai and LLM's but most of the stuff being attributed to the latest wave of AI is stuff that's already been possible for a decade at least. The new tech open up a few good use cases but they are definitely incremental rather than revolutionary.

We have found it useful for summarizing interactions, doing evaluations on interactions that would have no evaluation otherwise, and highlighting and summarizing relevant passages in knowledge articles for people on interactions with customers and for customers themselves via the web. It does have value, just a small fraction of that which would be needed to justify the investment being made and the valuations it's getting.

That's not a revolutionary change, though. It's a useful tool sometimes, nobody denies it, but this financial speculation and forced deployment has meant that the biggest impact it's had is the ease with which one can spread disinformation and generate slop for monetization. Both of those have undergone a revolution as a result, that was my point.

This is why I think LLMs have made the world worse even if I don't buy the fear-mongering. Regardless of the costs to train LLMs, the costs of having those tools available are worse than the benefits. The amount of extra work bug bounty programs have had to do thanks to AI is crazy.

Come to think of it, there are black markets for selling computer security vulnerabilities between nation-states. Maybe our governments can start flooding those with AI generated security exploits. That'd be funny.

This was a really great read. The numbers don’t lie: 7 companies each independently invested 100 bn in AI and have seen little revenue in return (relatively speaking). When overlaying that on top of its impact on the us stock market as a whole, once the veil has been lifted that this is not leading to super intelligence, a bubble will burst and the entire economy will feel it.

That doesn't mean "nothing to see here, move on." It means that AI isn't the bow-wave of "impending superintelligence." Nor is it going to deliver "humanlike intelligence."
It's a grab-bag of useful (sometimes very useful) tools that can sometimes make workers' lives better, when workers get to decide how and when they're used.

This is the part that is overlooked when discussing anti-ai hype: these tools are very useful, but they appear only useful to the skilled laborer wielding them, instead of the investor claim that they will be replaced.

I think I'm misunderstanding something about snapshots on fedora

Just installed fedora to replace windows 10. I've used mint and ubuntu as a general purpose os in the past but it's been a few years and I was never a power user, just learned what I needed as I went.

I remember it being important to use timeshift to safeguard against breaking something with updates, but it seems like timeshift doesn't work on fedora. Rather, you can get it to work on fedora but it's not supported. The thing that is confusing me is, searching for a way to do snapshots on fedora, I haven't really found what I expected? There's nothing I can see in software or flathub, timeshift or the alternatives mentioned on forums. I'm think I'm going to proceed with figuring out snapper using btrfs assistant as a gui...

But, given that I remember timeshift being basically recommended all the time to everyone when I used to use linux, I can't find anyone all that interested in using snapshots with fedora. Is it not necessary with fedora? Does fedora somehow handle that already? I can make do with the information I can find, but I'm wondering why there is so little information about it at all. I can't really find anything that suggests it's important to make snapshots. Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places? Can someone help me understand this better?

what i have learned: it seems like the options in the bootloader are for restoring just the kernel, in case a kernel update breaks something. snapshots (timeshift is the program/gui that seems to come included with at least mint and ubuntu) save backups of all your system files, so you can roll back if some other update messes something up, or if you personally break something while messing around with your configuration.

‘Cucire’ era mia nonna che aggiungeva i polsini alle giacche ormai troppo corte.

‘Cucire’ era un’amica speciale che per regalo di nozze mi scriveva una lettera chiusa da una busta cucita a mano con la scritta ‘Auguri!’, ricamata sul cartoncino.

‘Cucire’ era la sarta della merceria del paese che trasformava i pantaloni lisi dei miei figli in panta-toppe.

che tecniche utilizzi?

Per i rammendi avevo cominciato con la tecnica del video YouTube del post linkato. Però di fatto si cedevala cucitura. Allora ho cominciato a fare il mezzo punto indietro, per calzini e altro. Però ho notato che spesso si rompevano di nuovo vicino alla cucitura, segno che ormai il tessuto era debole credo. Allora per rapidità adesso faccio una semplice imbastitura nella parte interna (prendo i nomi da qui )

Per i jeans e altri lavori più "belli" tento di fare il punto indietro, anche se la mia precisione e regolarità lasciano a desiderare, ma di solito il risultato è soddisfacente.

Una cosa che vorrei capire meglio è come e quanto legare all'inizio e alla fine: ho sempre la sensazione di non fare le cose bene e che poi tutto si possa aprire.

Nota finale: ormai ogni volta che vari in hotel, se c'è, mi porto a casa il kit cucito... Risorsa preziosissima!

lgsp@feddit.it buonasera a te! Dunque da quel che leggo mi sembra importante condividere con te qualche punto che ritengo essenziale per la buona riuscita di un rammendo (che sia o meno creativo).

Rammendare necessita del criterio di similarità 😀

Innanzi tutto capiamo che tessuto stiamo trattando: un tessuto a maglia, elastico o un tessuto fermo non elastico?

Nel primo caso dovremo intervenire con un ago idoneo, a punta arrotondata per non compromettere le maglie, filo idoneo (meglio se della stessa natura della fibra del capo in questione: se lana, allora userò filo di lana, se cotone, cotone, ecc) ed infine: punto idoneo, ovvero un punto elastico.

Per il secondo caso, idem come sopra, ma adattandoci alla fermezza del tessuto. Un buon ago ben appuntito, un filo della stessa fibra e un punto fermo.

La riparazione si fa partendo da un centimetro oltre la linea di demarcazione fra tessuto liso o compromesso ed il tessuto sano, ovviamente sulla parte non compromessa.

Se ripari bene, hai la possibilità di non sprecare materiale inutilmente e di far durare più a lungo la tua riparazione. Oltre che migliorare la tua autostima;)

Per le toppe vale lo stesso criterio: stesso tessuto e grammatura del tessuto da rattoppare. E cucitura idonee.

Io ho da poco (ri)cominciato con prove, finendo un progetto di cucitura di mantello simil-fantasy iniziato anni fa partendo da un altro comprato finito, principalmente con l'obiettivo di imparare a farne altri per amicu e cosplay.
Sarei curioso di continuare per capire se è una cosa che fa per me, perché a primo impatto mi appassiona molto e dà soddisfazione, quindi spero di riuscire a realizzare altri progetti e vedere come va sul lungo termine ;D

eh la verità è che non l'ho trasferito su carta, ho fatto dei "carta"modelli direttamente con un altro tessuto, poggiandoci sopra il mantello finito e ricalcando dove potevo, aggiungendo i margini extra e le linee cucite a occhio o tirando rette di congiunzione per poi provare a fare reverse-engineering delle cuciture in vista senza scucire nulla 😅
Decisamente poco professionale quindi non saprei se sono adatto a condividere tecniche 😛
Il metodo che hai scoperto quale sarebbe?

Personalmente la userò fra poco per clonare una camicia che mi è stata commissionata. L’imperativo era non devastarla poiché ancora in ottimo stato, ma usarla per creare una nuova camicia come regalo di Natale 😀

Ogni tecnica è buona se per te va bene 😀 questa precisione del video mi incuriosiva perché una volta eseguito il cartamodello sei a più di metà dell’opera 😀 sembra molto preciso!

eccomi di nuovo! Grazie per il video, molto interessante e sì mi sa che prenderò l'idea in prestito (mooolto semplificata) per altre prove, intanto devo dire che sono talmente tanto alle prime armi che non ho ancora usato la carta apposita per fare i cartamodelli: perché c'è un tipo di carta in particolare da usare vero? Anche solo per la grandezza... come si chiama e dove si trova di solito da comprare?

Anche oggi è sabato, e quindi nuovamente non c’è nulla di interessante da dire qui. (Ma seriamente eh, non so perché i miei sabati sono così maledetti, solo in questo giorno sono così inispirata…) Per fortuna, di argomenti noiosi ne ho sempre qualcuno da parte, quindi per stavolta non soccomberò… magra consolazione. Beh, tra tante cose inutili mi stavo in realtà chiedendo come mai quando mi taglio le unghie devo fare sempre un grosso casino; e ok, forse questa sotto sotto è un po’ divertente. 💥
In genere non ci penso, perché faccio direttamente tutto per terra; non nel senso che bacio il pavimento mentre mi taglio le unghie, ma semplicemente faccio cadere tutto per terra, perché è più comodo, perché non ho pezzi da raccogliere per buttare poi, semplicemente passo l’aspirapolvere e tanti saluti… che in effetti è un tipo di casino, ma non quello intrinseco che voglio dire in questo momento. Il vero casino, piuttosto, l’ho visto l’altra sera, perché essendo tardi non potevo aspirare ancora più tardi, e allora ho dovuto fare sulla scrivania, e… 🤪

Caspita, e questo è un casino. Perché fare il tagliamento in modo più o meno preciso con non più di un paio di colpi mi risulta sempre praticamente impossibile, e quindi a furia di fare si ottengono anche queste piccole briciole di unghia, a parte i pezzi grossi. E non sono per niente poche. Però mi chiedo se sia un problema mio, e in quel caso quindi non sarebbe altro che un problema di skill (ormai li colleziono quelli, non c’è un cazzo da fare!), o se la cosa è comune o quantomeno aspettata… anche perché non sono l’unica persona ad avere solo 2 mani in totale di cui solo 1 dominante, quindi potrei aspettarmi di non essere la sola ad avere difficoltà con il tagliare le unghie soprattutto (…ma non unicamente) sull’opposta. 😑
Il colmo, però, a questo punto, è che, nonostante tutta questa fatica, comunque le unghie vengono indecenti alla fine, se non uso anche la limetta… E anche a questo ci ho pensato solo stavolta, perché stavolta avevo dimenticato di farlo, essendo che la limetta la tengo nel cassetto, e quindi avrei dovuto alzarmi dalla scrivania per prenderla subito dopo aver finito con le forbici, ma sul momento mi seccavo, e più tardi mi sono dimenticata; quindi, quando il giorno dopo mi sono risvegliata, ho realizzato per bene. 😵
Con la foto, anche se pochino, si vede… e un’unghia l’ho fatta lievemente concava al centro (non so neanche io come!), e un’altra unghia l’ho fatta poco più corta sulla destra rispetto alla sinistra, e così via, e che fastidio!!! Menomale che la limetta aggiusta… però… mentre anche questo non è chiaro se sia un problema mio o no, il dimenticare passaggi e finire a fare le cose a pezzi metà un giorno e metà un altro è certamente indicazione di skill mancanti. (Morirò con cotanto fregio, si vede.) 💖

Hollywood now has dueling open letters over the Israel film boycott

More than 5,000 actors and filmmakers, including Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem and Mark Ruffalo, signed an open letter on Sept. 9 pledging to boycott Israeli film groups.
Now, more than 1,200 other Hollywood figures, among them Liev Schreiber, Mayim Bialik and Sharon Osbourne, have signed a similar letter rejecting the boycott.

Read through the full list of signatories. Of the very few names that I recognize, the only one that really surprised/bothered me is Amy Sherman-Palladino. So, I’m happy that this letter alerted me to what a giant piece of shit she is. Also, it’s lowkey hilarious that Sharon Osbourne is perhaps the only one on the list that has no job description next to their name.

How do you handle emulator controls when using a controller?

One thing I’ve run into as I’ve been playing some of my retro games is that, when using a controller with an Nvidia Shield + Moonlight or even with just a Steam Deck, the emulators often have a massive amount of controls that I can’t really interact with. All of the controls are hotkey based, for save states, loading states, etc.

Most of the games I’m wanting to play are controller based, but it feels like the tools to enjoy them are all keyboard based. Do you just use the built in save functionalities? How does it all work?

If I am able to, I go in and re-map the buttons (either this is done in game or in your emulator). Sometimes you gotta play the game a bit, see what the imputs "should" be and then go in and set them to match on your controller. So if melee is E, I'll bind it to B. If shoot is left click, I'll bind it to RT. It's kinda tedious sometimes but it's step I'm willing to take (where I'm able to).

I play at my desk and use both keyboard and controller.

If I wasn't at my desk, I'd just not use those functions. But you might also be able to bind them to controller buttons or combos.

I use RetroArch ~~btw~~ on my tablet with a cheap Bluetooth gamepad, and have L3+R3 (pressing both sticks) configured to bring up the menu where I can save/load states, take screenshots, etc.

RetroArch also allows you to map actions like fast forward or slowmo to gamepad buttons, and make it so you have to hold a specific button to activate hotkeys.

My emulator handheld used combos to handle that. Holding select and pressing shoulder buttons would load or save the state for example

Steam Input baybeeee!
Setup a virtual menu and then you can have as many shortcuts as you want on the touchpad.

That being said, if the games you are playing can be emulated in RetroArch, that would be the best option.

Steam controller plus 'sc-controller' for linux. It supports other controllers too. There may be an android fork out there.

I also use it for most steam games, as I abhor steam input. I always launch steam with --nojoy.

It's usually possible to bind specific hotkeys to controller buttons within the emulator's settings (I make heavy use of R3 for fast-forward). Take a look at the settings and give it a try.

I stumbled across while trying to mod a community on Lemmy.world and I really like. Slick front-end for Lemmy. I don't fully understand what is needed to get it to work, but it looks like the instance needs to decide to implement it in some way.

I would assume that when I choose "Active" as my front page sorting, I would not see so many posts with no comments. What am I not understanding correctly?

It organises by when they were last posted in."Active" also counts the initial post as a comment, so new posts are by default "active" until comments from other posts dethrone them.

I agree that "Active" should be reworked into prioritising posts with high comment activities generally though. Like /hot/ but more comment-focused.

Kachin holds vast resources amid high global demand for rare earths to feed clean energy supply chains and stockpiles in the United States, the European Union and Japan. Mining sites are located in Kachin, with China playing a major role in extracting ore and adding value.
He said China focuses on processing to add value at home, while avoiding mining on its own soil due to severe environmental harm. Chinese policy shifted to limit domestic rare earth mining by Chinese firms, pushing operations into several areas of Myanmar. Activity rose sharply after 2015, then increased again after the 2021 coup.

The absence of control is alarming. Rare earth mining sites in Kachin have increased by more than 60 percent, with over 5,000 chemical ponds across about 400 mines. Chosen community aside, steam controller settings. If you're launching through steam, you should be able to map anything to anything. Make a radial menu with everything you need and map it to something you don't.
