This hidden electricity drain can have a massive impact

It's recycling all over again.
Corporations are responsible for a vast majority of the waste, but they try to shift the blame to individuals.
Corporations are responsible for a vast majority of the waste
I don't really understand this recurring theme in this context, Can someone explain to me why this is relevant?
Afaik, this isn't a discussion in my country, since most people (should) know that already.
This article triggered me, beacuse I want to lower my personal energy usage. Many companies in Europe who were energy wasteful and high energy users (like some chemical, steel, or aluminium plants) needed to close after the Russian invasion in 2022 and the then extreem high energy prices. Those that survived, are still struggling to this day.
It's good to know what we can do to reduce our own use—we all have to live on this planet, after all—but these kinds of articles pop up and, at the very least, make people think their efforts will have a meaningful impact. They go to sleep thinking they're solving the problem (barring extreme situations like war-driven scarcity, for example).
But if every household stopped using electricity, many countries would still have a massive energy problem on their hands, because households aren't really the problem.
This.
At home we minimize energy use and stuff, especially when the Ukraine war induced energy crisis hit.
But in companies nobody turns of their PC at night. Huge TVs are constantly running playing ads to empty rooms all night.
There's a large tower in the inner city where I live and their whole fassade is wrapped in complex RGB lighting. I wrote to them to please disable that since we are in an energy crisis, and their response was (I kid you not) that their building lighting is totally eco-friendly, because one night per month they switch it to completely green light, and that reminds people to save energy, and the energy thus saved offsets anything the building lighting consumes.
And that's not even talking about all the other industrial and corporate energy wasting.
Charron recommends starting with small steps like unplugging chargers for phones and other devices
This is completely useless advice leftover from two decades ago. All of these chargers have been active power supplies for a long time, and use almost no power when not in use
Meanwhile my coffee maker’s power button is on a touch screen? Who the eff designed that? How about yelling at corps to stop doing shit like this?
China’s Cleantech Exports Overtake US Fossil Fuel Energy Dominance with Lasting Implications
...The primary drivers of China’s clean technology export growth are batteries, followed by EVs. These technologies drive overall electrification. They also ensure that renewable energy generation can be put to use, even if output is intermittent or peak generation does not align with peak usage. Curtailment can be eliminated. The grid can become more stable, enabling further electrification. EVs shifting energy consumption away from petroleum not only allows emissions to be cut now but also sets up future reductions. By increasing the demand for electricity and creating a means to coordinate supply with demand, the next stage in renewable energy adoption is positioned to take off...... While some countries are penalizing or blocking China’s clean technology exports (particularly the US), relatively few trade barriers exist for heavily subsidized US fossil fuel exports. However, global perspectives are shifting, with the International Court of Justice issuing a unanimous decision that fossil fuel subsidies have been “unlawful.” Not only do fossil fuel subsidies distort markets, but they also fail to consider the negative externalities of climate change that extend beyond the exporter’s borders...
...Most of China’s cleantech exports are no longer going to wealthy OECD countries. Central Europe now outpaces the EU in solar growth, with panels largely coming from China. So far this year, EV exports are up 75% to ASEAN and up a staggering 287% in Africa. These numbers may be starting from a low baseline, but these countries represent growth markets. As countries develop out of poverty, energy consumption and overall consumption will rise. Having that growth tied to cleantech will ensure the economic development is not accompanied by environmental devastation...
...While China produces 80% of solar PV modules and battery cells and 70% of electric vehicles globally, it is also by far the largest consumer of clean technology. Some will point to China also being the largest fossil fuel consumer, even though its per capita and cumulative emissions are roughly half of the US. However, the lasting effect of clean technology adoption is poised to rapidly change the country’s energy consumption. Electrification of its economy overall will enable that adoption to accelerate. That change will have economic impacts that extend for decades and provide global scale for other countries to follow...

US anti-fascism expert blocked from flying to Spain at airport
A Rutgers University professor who taught a course on anti-fascism was blocked from leaving the US for Spain on Wednesday night, according to media reports, hours after Donald Trump hosted a White House roundtable highlighting the impact of antifa – or “anti-fascist” – far-left activists.
Mark Bray, an historian who published the 2017 book Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, and has taught courses on anti-fascism at the New Jersey university, was attempting to board a plane at Newark airport bound for Europe when he was informed at the boarding gate that the reservations for him and his family had been cancelled.
‘Someone’ cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second,” Bray posted on Bluesky social media. “We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’”
No details on who canceled the flight.

Italy’s Meloni says ICC complaint accuses her of Gaza genocide complicity
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says she has been accused of “complicity in genocide” in a complaint lodged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) over Rome’s support for Israel as it bombards Gaza.
The complaint, dated October 1, was signed by some 50 people, including law professors, lawyers, and several public figures who accused Meloni and others of complicity by supplying arms to Israel, according to the AFP news agency.
“By supporting the Israeli government, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people,” the authors of the court filing against the Italian leaders wrote.

rooting for the guys although I don't want none of them things. I run my device without a modem on (hopefully I disabled it correctly) and I want it to run like my other shit runs - I turn it on when I want it, no doing shit in the background nobody asked it to, syncing to the clown, none of that.
the results are awesome - I get like days of standby out of a severely degraded battery that can't manage a whole day under android. still, I understand that other people need this stuff. for me, SMS and calls utilizing the utterly broken, insecure, and definitely compromised telecom infra shouldn't be a thing in 2025.
Why can't we just use banking websites? You don't need an app ecosystem for that. They just need to build a responsive website that will work on a computer or phone. If you have bank to bank transfer (like e-transfer in Canada) that can be done from the mobile website as well.
Payment like NFC payment is a different story. I suspect its unlikely we ever see that.
It's unfortunate that sweden decided to lock 2FA behind proprietary smartphone apps.
For every country its going to be a different story. I think instead of trying to build an app ecosystem for things like bank apps on linux it would be easier for citizens of those countries to convince the government / banks to allow other 2FA methods like OTPs that can work on any a device using an OTP client. That would honestly benefit more people as whole since they wouldn't be lock down to just Android/Apple or even owning a smartphone. They could do all their important government/finance stuff just with a computer.

Do you think there are ethical uses of AI video generation in politics?
Obviously AI generated images and videos are already being used in politics, generally as far as I've seen by right wingers.
A thought I had would be to flip the table and generate AI videos of Trump attacking right wingers for being too far right, too racist, not supporting trans or LGBT+ rights, etc, in ways that are guised as old school conservative values. Like the "The govt shouldn't be interfering in a private citizen's healthcare choices" type stuff.
His supports seem the type already to believe AI videos are real, so do you think stuff like that would work or just circle in left wing groups and never take off among his worshipers? If they did spread, would they even be effective in triggering his base to push back towards the center?
ICE is detaining children with their families beyond limit set by federal judge
Immigration authorities are detaining hundreds of children for longer than the 20 days allowed by a federal judge, a Scripps News investigation has learned.
Scripps News obtained a document filed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement under a federal court order that shows more than 600 juveniles held in ICE custody at some point in July.
The children are being arrested and detained with their families while going through lengthy deportation proceedings. Many of the juveniles end up at the South Texas Family Residential Center, a sprawling site located in Dilley, Texas, that reopened in March.
The detention center is owned and operated by CoreCivic, a for-profit company contracting with ICE to hold immigrants.

LibreWolf wants to compete with Mullvad and Tor?
When I see people talking about LibreWolf, it’s always loved or hated.
People who hate it complain that it either requires too much configuration to be usable (because of the strict default settings) or that you should just use Mullvad (whether for real reasons or just better marketing about privacy).
People who love it (including me) see it as what Firefox should be: community‑driven and user‑first. However, I believe people using LibreWolf as their main browser (like me) does so only because they’ve tweaked the settings - allowing browsing‑history, password saving, manually adding cookie exceptions for sites they want to stay logged into, etc.
Out of the box, LibreWolf seems to be trying to compete with Mullvad and Tor as a hardcore privacy‑first browser (although letterboxing isn’t default). But can it really do that?
I’m not saying it can’t on a technical level (which I’m in no way qualified to judge), but Mullvad is a huge company and Tor is a very mature project. I’ve read a bunch of guides and watched people talking about privacy browsers, and I never saw anyone recommending LibreWolf over Mullvad or Tor when you want to browse sensitive content or use an online identity you don’t want easily linked to your main one.
Aren’t LibreWolf fans using it as their main daily‑use browser? From what I see (and I don’t know how aligned this is with the project itself or the rest of the user base), LibreWolf is an alternative to Chrome, Firefox, and especially Brave. It’s a truly community‑driven project focused on privacy, prioritizing the user, and not involved in shady business like Brave.
So, when I recommend LibreWolf to people, I suggest it as a substitute for Brave. Out of the box, though, it feels like it’s trying to be an alternative to Mullvad/Tor instead.
i suspect that librewolf will go the same way firefox does as the world switches to chromium/chrome based browsing.
doing so gives google more control of the web like using android gave it control over mobile developers.
Trump’s war on the left: Inside the plan to investigate liberal groups
The Trump administration plans to deploy America's counter-terrorism apparatus - including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department - as well as the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department against certain left-wing groups it accuses of funding and organizing political violence, the officials said.
The effort marks an escalation in the administration's efforts to target domestic opponents, raising alarm among civil rights groups and Democratic leaders about the use of executive power.
Head of largest US bank warns of risk of American stock market crash
Jamie Dimon, who is the chair and chief executive of the giant Wall Street bank JPMorgan Chase, said he was “far more worried than others” about a serious market correction, which he predicted could come in the next six months to two years.
“I would give it a higher probability than I think is probably priced in the market and by others,” he told the BBC. “So if the market’s pricing in 10%, I would say it is more like 30%.”
Dimon added there were a “lot of things out there” creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, pointing to risks including the geopolitical environment, fiscal spending and the remilitarisation of the world.
“All these things cause a lot of issues that we don’t know how to answer,” he said. “So I say the level of uncertainty should be higher in most people’s minds than what I would call normal.”
The comments are the latest in a string of warnings that stock markets may be due a correction.

Barghouti, who is the most popular Palestinian political figure according to polls, was one of the most valuable names to potentially be traded for the 48 Israeli captives in Gaza.
A source close to Barghouti and his family told MEE that last night mediators including US envoy Steve Witkoff signed off on a prisoner list that included Barghouti.

There is not really any card Hamas can play. Israel is allowed to genocide all Palestinians with full support of the West.
And Israel will gladly kill all the captives in Palestinian custody with full support of the Israeli public.
When faced with the West which has absolutely zero morals the dilemma becomes very tough.

Looking for a new place...
I used to use gaytorrents. They have the content and forums and it’s a nice little community. However, it’s suspicious they aren’t trying to prepare for the censorship hitting all other adult sites. They flat out stated in the forums they will not adopt i2p or tor or any other darknet and will start using age verification/start banning IP ranges when requested. If we don’t like it, we are told to just use a VPN.
This is an incredibly dumb response.
So I need to plan my migration away while there is still enough open conversation to discover new places. My state already bans porn unless we hand over our IDs to be handled irresponsibly/given to identity thieves/added to a list of undesirable people they want to toss into a gas chamber.
Under this regime, I’m not giving that out. Fuck them.
So where can I go now?

Why can’t this be a web app that uses web notifications? Why does it even need to be an on-device app? That’s building in a vulnerability that doesn’t need to be there.
Make it a site.
Go to the site.
Pin the site.
Allow notifications from site.
Done.
Yes, Apple and Google are in the wrong, but why are we relying on them for this at all? Not everything needs to be a fucking app.
This isn’t a tech illiteracy issue. Sure you CAN take a video, and upload it to archive.org from your phone.
Try doing that while actively being abused by ICE.
It’s about making the process as foolproof as possible, because seconds matter here, and making sure that footage is backed up as quickly as possible is paramount.
Even if an app like this isn't distributed through Google Play, they could disable the developer's account for any vague "abuse" reason.

Good Privacy Practices (Intermediate)
These are some practices which worked for me, You can adjust them to match your preferences. Feel free to add your own in the comments
1. If you are forced to use something that is privacy invasive, Make it isolated from your actual profile. (Ex- Using a 2nd Browser profile, Using an alias to signup)
2. Always use the services that you use from their official clients. Don't blindly trust 3rd party clients just because they claim that they are "more private", Do some research before using it.
3. Don't mix up your work life with your personal life. Consider getting a second phone just for work purposes or you could use a second profile for work purposes if your phone has the ability to create multiple user profiles.
4. Keep a habit of clearing the browser data once in a while. (You can make your browser automatically clear the browser data when closing but it can be kinda annoying when you have to log back into websites everytime)
5. Strip away the metadata of your photos and documents when sharing them.
6. Check connected apps/services regularly and revoke unused ones. (on Discord, GitHub, Matrix and etc.)
7. Audit app permissions regularly (Some apps adds in new permissions or re-enables permissions over updates)
The old #3 tip got removed (The password one) because it served no additional protection and was pretty annoying. It was a mistake by me, sorry

- Silo ALL online accounts. All online accounts should have a separate name, avatar, email alias, etc, and be opened in assigned Firefox containers. Burner email aliases will be your friend here. Do not link these accounts, or if you must, link one or two but have them dead end there. The last thing you want is someone hopscotching all the way to your front door.
In reference to #5, daily use of BleachBit at the end of each computer session. Tick the 'Free Disk Space' box under the System options. Takes about an hour and a half for my system, so I run BleachBit in the evening. It won't free up disk space, nor will it make your computer run faster, but it's certainly good for security aspects. PrivaZer is also a good piece of software but it's windows based.
#3 is a pretty good tip although Bitwarden's track record of breaches that resulted in password leaks, is fairly substantial.
#6 makes me giggle because I do that for rare pictures I post online. Sometimes, I'll inject something like 'The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back, turn back, turn back' in one of the exif slots, just to see if someone is paying attention. BTW, the phrase is from an ELO instrumental that was laced with a backwards message. IIRC, the same song was used by NBC for an intro to one of their sports broadcasts back in the 70s.

Is there any kind of automate way to do that? Because if you have always to think what account goes in what container :/ This is a lot of brain overheat !

Official PFLP Statement on the Ceasefire Agreement
DeepSeek translation:
The Ceasefire Agreement is a First Step Towards Ending the Genocide; Our People's Steadfastness and Valiant Resistance Have Broken the Zionist War Machine and Imposed the Agreement
Reaching a ceasefire agreement and beginning the implementation of its first phase is an important achievement and a first step on a long road to ending our people's suffering. The time has come for the genocide to stop. This is the fruit of the legendary steadfastness presented by Gaza and our Palestinian people, and the immense sacrifices of the martyrs, wounded, prisoners, and missing, who embodied the most magnificent images of sacrifice and resolve.
We extend a greeting of pride and honor to the sons of our people in the homeland and the diaspora, and to our martyrs, wounded, prisoners, and missing, who embodied the most magnificent images of sacrifice and steadfastness. Our people have endured what no other people have, and despite the destruction, massacres, and starvation, the occupation failed to achieve its goals and reaped nothing but failure, disgrace, and isolation.
The Front has continued its efforts without interruption, from the start of the aggression until the moment of signing the agreement, in coordination with all Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic forces, to reach this moment where the Zionist war machine stops. The Front will remain by our people's side in this difficult and pivotal stage of its history, continuing its role in supporting their steadfastness and struggle until their national goals are achieved.
We highly appreciate the efforts of our brothers in Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and all other Arab and Islamic nations, and the positions and movements of free countries and peoples around the world who rejected the continuation of the massacres and sought to stop them; their efforts contributed to reaching this agreement. We particularly value Egypt's firm position rejecting displacement and supporting the steadfastness of our people on their land.
The current agreement has broken the Zionist "no's" and objectives. It is the possible option under the current circumstances, and its success is linked to the occupation's commitment and clear American guarantees to prevent stalling. Our goal now is to continue working to completely end the war of genocide, achieve a comprehensive withdrawal from the Strip, break the siege, and end the suffering of our people.
We are working with all factions under Egyptian auspices for a comprehensive national dialogue that opens a new horizon for building a unified strategy based on our people's historical constants and rights to confront the next stage, and to rebuild our national institutions on the basis of partnership to face all challenges.
We reject foreign guardianship and affirm that the administration of Gaza must be purely Palestinian, with Arab and international participation in reconstruction and recovery.
The world today stands with us and supports our right to freedom and self-determination. The global movement must continue and the occupation and its leaders must be pursued even after reaching a ceasefire agreement, so that Palestine remains alive in the world's conscience until the occupation is eradicated.

God Is An Astronaut live a Roma con Jo Quail
Un percorso attraverso generi, individualità, comunità e sperimentazione che solo i God Is An Astronaut sanno narrare.

- Database Who Profits – Aziende e occupazione
| Azienda / Marca | Prodotti e Marchi in Italia | Legame Contestato | Fonte |
| Nestlé | Baci Perugina, KitKat, Nescafé, S.Pellegrino, Levissima, Buitoni, Purina | Detiene una quota di controllo (>50%) del gruppo israeliano Osem, attivo anche nei Territori Occupati. | Who Profits – Osem Group |
| PepsiCo | Lay’s, Gatorade, 7Up, Quaker, Tropicana | Joint venture con Strauss Group (israeliana), accusata di sostegno economico all’esercito israeliano. | BDS Movement – Sabra |

| Who Profits – SodaStream |
| Who Profits – Agricultural Exports |
| Azienda Italiana | Settore | Segnalazione / Coinvolgimento |
| Leonardo S.p.A. |
| Barilla | Alimentare | Non risulta citata né in Who Profits né tra i target BDS. |
Tecnologia, logistica e sponsorizzazioni
| The Intercept |

Infrastrutture, energia e finanza B2B

- 🔍 Verificare l’origine: evitare prodotti etichettati “Israele” o marchi agricoli noti (Jaffa, Carmel, Jordan River).

Frankenstein Junior torna in vita in versione seriale.

On the contrary i express that i do not understand this to the point of deeming it strange or weird, triggering my curiosity.
I was hoping someone would chime in an explain how text generator techniques (which i do know alot about) known to have no capacity to use real world reason or logic can be used to help solve dna puzzles unless as a sub module of general machine learning. In which that later case would be within my understanding

I'll let experts do their thing, but this kind of thing worries me. I never had "there is no singularity, AI just engineers a generic disease by accident and kills is all" on my bingo.

in reply to panda_abyss • • •This is actually an excellent use case for AI. Physics and chemistry as scientific disciplines are lots of complex pattern recognition and manipulation. AI is just a pattern recognition and generation engine, despite what the tech bros and apologists like to tell us.
What these engines generate will ultimately be vetted by experts before it even goes to trials. Scientists don't just take things on blind faith simply because a robot or even another expert comes up with something; their entire deal is to understand their particular field of study in great detail, after all!

We've got the photos the problem is is that when you zoom in on a 1 mm by 1 mm patch of sky 1,100,000 new stars appear. It's going to take a while, even with AI.
You never know you might find a Dyson sphere one day.

The problem is the term AI has become so broadly used that it's become meaningless. There is a popular quote about how the quota doesn't want AI to replace artistic jobs, as if it will. As if generative AI and large language models and projects like this are the same.
When the bubble bursts, (please let it be soon) we're still going to have all of the science AIs because those are actually useful. What we don't need is AI girlfriends.

I didn't say "no it doesn't" I said "no I doesn't" which is a different sentence.

They misquoted me because they didn't read the quote properly and then doubled down on it. Meanwhile you are now arguing about it despite the fact that it is demonstrably evident that you are wrong

in reply to Echo Dot • • •The Futurama quote is "No I'm doesn't" and doesn't make any sense in this context even if it was properly transcribed.
Bro, either you are being insanely unclear, in which case it's still on you, or you are lying to save face.
There is not one person that thought you meant some obscure Futurama quote spealt "No I'm doesn't" instead of the obvious "No it doesn't". We don't live in your head, you are communicating terribly and trying to spin it on everybody else. I mean, thinking most people even know Futurama enough to spot the quote even if it was properly written is a HUGE ask.
I'm not trying to be overly harsh here but this is a bit ridiculous, sorry.

There was an old game from the PlayStation days called Xenogears. There was a population of mutants and monsters in it than came about from fucking with DNA irresponsibly. I’m reminded of that obnoxious rat-man from the Kislev prison.
