I can hardly believe Ukraine has hit Russian refineries so fucking badly that Russia has stopped exporting refined go juice. That's the biggest news of this war for me. A petro state, their economy and no less their war machine, depends on oil, and they can no longer export refined fuel?!
Now if Europe would press the attack and finish this thing. America can no longer be counted upon and the enemy is at the fucking gates. Hammer Russia fucking flat while they're on their back foot. Fuck are they waiting for?!
so the way i understand it, at first refinery strikes had little impact because other refineries still had slack capacity. but even before that slack capacity was gone, it had a further effect that now fuel was not prepared in places it used to be, so it had to be hauled longer distances. meaning logistics is strained and some fuel is used to haul it, and also now fuel production is more concentrated
at some point that slack capacity was gone and fuel went from not where you need it to not existing at all. there already were shortages in some regions. that and still large demand for fuel for farming caused decrease in exports. there was a refinery that only produces products for export, and its output wouldn't be directly usable as fuel (they only distilled crude into fractions, still high in sulfur etc) but it was also hit so exports from it don't matter because these are none
at any rate these developments are on borrowed time because it only takes maybe half year to repair more advanced parts of refinery, so under certain droning intensity they can just roll on. everyone involved knows that, and looks like situation will get worse for russians

Why the fuck are there still whales there and why are the corpos allowed to threaten death if these whales. They wanted to sell them to china (where they most likely will be further abused), now if they can't get money they'll kill them?
C'mon Ottawa, force them to rehabilitate and release them, even if it kills the park.

A lot of animals cannot be rehabilitated and released. If they were born and raised in captivity, they have effectively no chance of survival on their own. I don't know what the situation is for these animals, but I've been to plenty of zoos and aquariums in the past that have rehabilitation programs and even they have a few "lifers" who will never leave.

I'm not a marine biologist, so I can't speculate on what the best alternative is for these whales, but I would like to imagine there are more options than the binary of "kill them" or "throw them to the ~~wolves~~ sharks".
Marineland is just parroting the euthanize option because they're upset they couldn't make a quick buck by selling them to China. It's a hissy fit tactic to try to un-block the sale.
If the whales are not able to be released in to the wild, I'm sure there are plenty of other facilities out there that would be able to care for them. Marineland might need to pay them to take the animals in, but it should be their obligation to do so if they're unable to support the quality of life they need themselves.

Hey, man! What do you have against sharks? They need food too. Euthanize them and OSHA and 9 other agencies will have a say in how the carcasses are disposed of “safely”.
I do agree with you though, I wish the options weren’t so binary.
It's not the hubris of man. It's scientific research over decades and decades that has shown many captive animals are unable to survive without humans. This isn't just some hippy or business person making uninformed assumptions about how animals work. Animals who have never been taught how to hunt on their own, or how to communicate with others of their species, will slowly die of starvation. It happens all the time when animals are let loose in the wild with no skills.
If you don't believe me, go watch Naked and Afraid. Nearly every episode is about how these adult humans who have a production team ensuring their safety can't catch any food and get sick from bad water and mostly starve for the entire duration of the challenge. That's what captive animals are like. They have grown up with nobody to teach them anything useful. The only people who do well on the show are those who have had years of training in how to survive in the wild.

In the past, attempts to rehabilitate whales have taken decades and resulted in failure. The whales have simply become wholly dependent on humans to feed them and give them company.
TBH, though, most of them kept in captivity end in suicides as the reverberations from their small enclosures are like living in a room where the alarms blare 24/7 so the euthanization might actually be a gift to them.
So it comes down to putting them in the wild to die slowly or kill them outright. If I had to choose I guess I'd want them released, but I'm not really in either camp. I also really don't like the idea of continuing their suffering in captivity.
Euthanize, BUT NOT RELEASE, right??

Not necessarily. These animals can be acclimatized and eased into it in stages to give them a fighting chance. Even if the chance of success is slim, I still fully expect the assholes who decided to breed these animals in captivity to be financially liable to cover the cost of that.
Otherwise, whoever owns these animals should be legally bound to financially support them until they die of old age. If someone decides to breed sentient creatures in captivity they should know that they can't just discard them like an old newspaper if that doesn't turn out to be a good investment.
It's funny how they didn't have any problem paying the huge expense of bringing them there but suddenly money is scarce when it is time to take care of them or brigning them back.
They should be legally required to pay to fix it. To me this is no different than an oil company having to pay to cleanup whenever they make a spill.
In China. So it’s not entirely on the province.
If they were born and raised in captivity their odds of survival are pretty low. Like someone who always lived in a large city and never went camping being dropped off in Alaska odds of survival.
Rehabilitation only helps so much without the actual experience of growing up with other members of their species in the wild.
Edit: Of course the adults in the wild are the ones that survived until adulthood so I still lean towards attempts to rehabilitate and release, just noting it isn't as simple as releasing.

Barring a time machine to stop the park from opening in 1961, that's the options.
The option is right there in the article:
Under provincial law, Ontario has the power to seize the whales to ensure their safety – recouping any costs incurred when the park is sold.
Everyone is big mad about the whales. Meanwhile, there's a whole lot of other animals that aren't famous being fucked with, and humans, and a pretty compelling case that the costs of caring for damn belugas is actually pretty burdensome.
It's not bad people care about show whales. It's bad that it's vastly disproportionate.
It is proportionate --- to their size
(In all seriousness, it's a lot easier to make suitable living quarters for most other animals. If you can't make suitable living quarters, it's unethical, full stop. Yes I'm including factory farm meat in that)

As I've said, journalists that feel so comfortable giving a free pass to Israel should go hang out there a while.
😀
That would be a correct reading if it wasn't for the small (tiny, miniscule, tinsy winsy) detail that when it comes to what the IDF or the Israeli government allege this very newspaper actually uses words like "stated" instead of "alleged".
(Similarly to how they write for Israeli soldiers that they "are killed" whilst for Palestinians the form used is the passive one: they "die")
It's the double standard that makes it propaganda rather than journalism - Journalists would go to great lengths to treat both sides exactly the same.
If they were treated equally:
Israel’s foreign ministry has dismissed all claims of mistreatment of members of the flotilla as “brazen lies”, posting on X: “All the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld.”
would instead have been
Israel’s foreign ministry claimed that all allegations of mistreatment of members of the flotilla were “brazen lies”, posting on X: “All the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld.”
Instead the word "dismissed" was used, which is less negative than "claimed" or "alleged", being instead at the same level as "said" which is neutral.
In the English language claiming and alleging carry an implied judgement of "possibly false, requires proof", unlike saying or even dismissing which are purelly neutral and carry no implied judgement whatsoever on the truthfulness of the words.
In The Guardian the flottila members make "allegations" and "claims" - implying that they need to prove it - whilst the Israeli minister who called them "terrorists" a few days ago (a pretty good indication he's a shameless liar) merely says things thus not implying that proof required to back what he says.
Had they been trying to be impeccably neutral they would've used "said" or equivalent for both sides as those are 100% neutral, avoiding for both sides words that imply that something requires proof .
Israel’s foreign ministry has dismissed all claims of mistreatment of members of the flotilla as “brazen lies”, posting on X: “All the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld.”
Cool. Show us video evidence of the whole time they were detained.
The national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has said he was “proud” of the way staff behaved at Ketziot. He said in a statement on the activists: “They should get a good feel for the conditions in Ketziot prison and think twice before they approach Israel again.”

[Stalin said] "The Russian tsars did many bad things. They plundered and enslaved the people. They waged wars and grabbed territory in the interests of the landowners. But they did do one good thing—they created a huge state that stretches all the way to Kamchatka. We have inherited that state. And for the first time we, the Bolsheviks, have brought together and consolidated this state as a single, indivisible state... for the benefit of the workers"At the Berlin train station on the eve of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union Averell Harriman asked Stalin how it felt.to arrive in the capital of a defeated enemy as a victor. Stalin replied, “Tsar Alexander made it all the way to Paris.”
That is absolutely not a territorial claim, it's a statement about Russian history. He specifically mentioned the horrors of the tsarist empire, which you will never hear Putin do
i'm not sure i understand, but i am north american. the reason i posted this is there's a particular set of people on here who believe everything done by the usa is bad (a form of black and white thinking that's frankly quite understandable) therefor any country that accepts aid from the usa must be evil (a form of black and white thinking i can absolutely not endorse) and any country that undermines US imperialism must be good (another form of black and white thinking i can absolutely not endorse). this crowd is frequently on lemmy saying that russia's genocide in eastern ukraine is:
- not really happening and is a fabrication of the cia controlled western media
- if it is happening, is limited to a few troops acting against their commander's orders
- if it is widespread, it's not really a big deal because talking about it is just a distraction from the genocides in Gaza and Sudan (though they usually don't bring up Sudan, they only want to talk about Palestine. and they certainly don't want to talk about the latin american genocide or the |uygher genocide)
- if it is a big deal, it's ultimately not russia's fault, it's simply what war is and russia must commit to war in order to bring about communist utopia everywhere through a process that can only be described as "somehow"
- if it is russia's fault, it was simply an understandable miscalculation any country could have made
- if russia did intend to commit genocide against the Ukrainian people, it's because all Ukrainians, yes all of them, even the anti-zionist jewish ones, are nazis
this particular crowd will say the most absurd shit like that spelling Kyiv "Kyiv" is russophobic. i don't know how you can even hold that position. Kyiv is a living community filled with people who spell it "Kyiv". when they ask that news outlets spell it "Kyiv" instead of "Kiev" it's because they live there. it's the name of their city. it more accurately portrays how the people there think of and pronounce the name of the community they are part of. calling that russophobic is like saying the fact that the first english colony in north america is spelled "Virginia" now instead of "Firginia" is anglophobic.
anyway. i try to point out to people that my enemy in this global system of terror is not strictly speaking russia, or the russian people, or even really the kremlin or putin. these are all entities that are complicit in the actions of my true enemy, but i am, just like everyone, complicit in the actions of my true enemy: colonialism. i unfortunately have a very solid understanding of the ravages of colonialism. my family arrived in the united states fleeing genocide in the old country. i live on stolen land in a community whose history is primarily centered on the extractive exploitation of petrochemicals. i do not see russia's actions and see liberators. i see more of the same. i see my enemy: colonialism.
so i speak. i name what i see for what it is in hopes that others will begin to understand that our global system of terror provides us no pure allies and no single individual entity to blame. colonialism was not brought into this world by the usa, china, or russia, though all three are engaged in it in order to further their aims of control. no people will ever be made whole by the black and white thinking that any of the empires are their true ally or true enemy. in fact, black white thinking is a tool of our opressors. it makes us easier to manipulate.
I feel kinda bad for making you type that out. I agree with you.
I was making fun of "What are we a bunch of Asians", which is a common stock phrase deployed to mock critiques that compare developing autocracies to other autocratic regimes (i.e. Kuomintang, Maoist China, Korea at various points).
who would i be without long thoughts no one asked for.
but i realized there was value to making my stance explicit and i used your comment as my excuse 😉
Because associated independent preindustrial farms can't face invasion from industrialized nations. Leaving the farmers in the past would have been the death of them. Remember: the USA, France, Poland, Japan, Greece, Estonia, Romania, Serbia and Italy invaded the RSFSR during the Russian Civil War for the sin of being communist. Stalin famously predicted the Nazi invasion 10 years in advance:
We are 50–100 years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this distance in ten years. Either we do it, or they crush us.-Stalin, 1931, talking about the industrialization of the Soviet Union.
Really fucking dark story time!
Back before the latest war kicked off and nobody gave a shit about Ukranian sovereignty outside of that one bit on Seinfeld, Crimea was a discussion point for one reason or another. With the main argument being that russia can't give it back because it is not even Ukranian in culture or ethnicity and is really russia anyway.

They seem real quiet.
Dude I grew up socialist at heart, my great-grandpa was at the ford riots where people got shot.
But this shit nonsense that tankies spew make me almost want to rebrand my beliefs. You can't just say that atrocities didn't happen because you like the general philosophy of the political system. (Even though it was communism for exactly 3 minutes before sliding into good ol' authoritarianism)
I get the same shit talking to some super pro china folks. Yes, amazing leaps and technological bounds are happening and socially a lot of commendation is due. I am really, really in awe of some of their progresses. But it's really really weird how they go into full-on denial mode if I mention that one time a local mayor or whatever farted during a town hall. That apparently becomes "western propaganda", no matter how happy I am to talk shit about the shortcomings of my country as well. Blind nationalism makes me really crazy. And I'm American who's lived in Asia for a long time so I can really feel it when they're just talking shit. I grew up with mindless US propaganda, and have spent the past 20ish years hearing Asian "never ever lose face" "everything is fine and always has been fine forever aside from that one time when we defeated the despicable enemy of our glorious party!!!!!
Guys it's just as stupid to hear from your nation as it is to hear from the US. We're all flawed. Admit it so we can continue to improve instead of locking into a shitty system so we don't offend the great grandfather of the nation or whatever dumb thing. Be yourself ffs. A lot of people from the past were horrible dicksuckers and you should have more confidence in your own personal ideas, be careful choosing idols. Most of them were just shitbags who ended up the victors. And as we all know, history i written by the victors.
*Not directed at you Bruce, just taking the chance to yell at tankies.
+1, I get it.
I don't know how to say this inoffensively, but I think China (speaking broadly) has a cultural victim complex, which is understandable given their history.
And I think China and Russia governments stoke this victimization for political benefit, kinda like the US convervative movement is doing now.
Anyway, I think that leads to reflexive denial of their own atrocities as if its an abuser blaming a more enlightened victim. And as for the tankies actually outside of those countries, well... I don't really know.
I think part of it is younger people waking up to how propagandized our government has made them, and then swinging to the opposite side. Like "All that stuff the soviets or ccp said must have been true if so much of what our government said was a lie". I did something like that after leaving the evangelical church when I was 18. Strong to atheism before adopting a more open-minded approach with room for the fact that I can be very mistaken.
I understand the cultural victimization thing, and it is completely understandable. China is a very unique case, we can learn a lot from them, I just hope that we can come to respect each-other enough to learn from our advantages instead of one-upping our destructive tendencies. Chinese people are awesome, Americans are cool too. And each nation has an equal amount of uncool people. Progress could be easier if we could all be nationalistically humble. Course it would help if we didn't have a millenia-long history of just killing and taking what we want, that is a big phase to get out of.

French government collapses in 14 hours, deepening political crisis
PARIS, Oct 6 (Reuters) - France's new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu and his government resigned on Monday, hours after Lecornu announced his cabinet line-up, making it the shortest-lived administration in modern French history and deepening the country's political crisis. The unexpected resignation came after allies and foes alike threatened to topple the new government, with Lecornu saying that meant he could not do his job. That is the good and the bad with French politics.
On the one hand, if the French government tries to f-ck up the people, those people put down the whole country in no time. Sometimes it looks like they have a general strike set up within five minutes.
On the other hand, when they actually need painful reforms (like the do now), it's the same.

- the previous government (prime minister and the other ministers) drafted a budget proposal last summer that was widely unpopular among the population and most deputies in the national assembly.
- the previous prime minister asked for a vote of confidence, lost the vote of confidence so the whole government resigned
- Macron appoints a new prime minister, this new prime minister promises a new policy line that will break with the old government.
- After 26 days, the new prime minister reveals the name of the new ministers that will form the new government. It's mostly the same names as before.
- 15 hours later he resigned, so the new government is dissolved.

Looks like it has an inertial sensor to control the view, here's there relevant bit from the article:
The parts he purchased online include two displays that max out at 2880×1440p and 90 Hz refresh rate, two lenses, an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensor, and an Arduino microcontroller board. The other parts of the headset were 3D-printed.
...
The headset features individually adjustable IPD, interchangeable faceplates, and head tracking. But it does have downsides — at full resolution, it only runs at 60 Hz. Also, it only has three degrees of freedom (3DoF), which means it tracks looking up and down, left and right, and tilting the head left and right. He explained he didn't bother equipping it with 6DoF as 3DoF was enough for his sim racing.
The critical thing with these is response time. If it's even slightly too high (I think 20-30ms is easily too high), some/many people get very motion sick. Getting that time down as low as needed is also not trivial.
With it only being 60 Hz on the controller itself, that's basically impossible to hit. That's 16.6 ms already. Then the processing, sending to the PC, and the PC reacting has a budget of just a few ms? Yea, not happening.
I'm assuming he's really not sensitive to this. As it's open source now the people who are sensitive can improve it. That's the beauty of open source after all.

And PSVR2 has had some amazing games out that have completely changed the way I experience VR. And they also opened up their headset to PC via steam with an external dongle.
Mainly the accessibility has been at an all time high. But the games that have come out lately too are amazing. I can even do cross play multiplayer with many different headsets now which is also super cool.
Overall is that even a deal over a used headset? Even a fully featured non-stripped down one? Like given what features his headset does have, it's comparable to some pretty old headsets... and it likely does even those bare minimum features more poorly than an older used headset would. Not to mention comfort.
Like a 10 year old Rift CV1 has almost as much resolution at 90hz/fps instead of 60. And while it's lenses would be relatively terrible now, they were pretty much the best option of their day, and likely still better than whatever this dude sourced. Not to mention their motion to photon was around 12 ms. The absolute best result this guy can hope for is 16.6ms, and that's only if everything else in the pipeline is faster than the screens refresh rate... maybe it is... but I wouldn't bet on it personally.
I'm sure it was a fun project though.

No, it's not a deal. It's only about learning IMHO and that's already be great.
In fact it's such a "bad" deal that I replied a bit in depth. My goal isn't to bring the project down, heck I'm even envious about being able to do all that, but rather that people curious about VR don't get confused. This is nearly a decade outdated and there are better open solutions, e.g. Lynx or even Meta Quest 2 without account IMHO.
Huh, this is kinda prefect for me too, only the refresh rate might be an issue.
I wonder if I could buy cheap no-name headset & fit in that arduino chippy.
It's always cool to see such projects, and I was discussing about the topic just yesterday.
... but please, don't spend $150 on that. This is limited has it has :
- no controllers (and gamepads aren't spatial),
- no hand tracking (which would be spatial),
- no 6DoF, so you can't move your head or body around, just turn your head around
- a very limited software stack, e.g. no OpenXR (AFAICT),
- a cable to be plugged to a computer, i.e. it's not standalone
so it's basically a more open but not standalone version of the Oculus Go. For context the Go is from 2018 and back then was $200 while being standalone. Note also that the Go is rootable, cf developers.meta.com/horizon/bl…
There are also other DIY VR HMDs, e.g. github.com/relativty/Relativty from 2020 which similar limitations. In fact this made so much buzz back then the founder managed to ride the hype and make (sadly) a VC funded startup. I say sadly because the initial project was all open VR and openness but once the money was locked-in... well I let you check.
So... again this is VERY cool to build but please do not consider this anything but a way to learn. If you do want to play with VR with a limited budget consider instead an accountless (meaning no Meta involved) second hand Meta 2 then Alvr or WiVRn (cf lvra.gitlab.io/ for more).

For now you have to use non open-source software PrivateQuest to pair it. I recommend to factory reset it first but anyway instructions are there, can be a bit finicky but does work.
I've read that some are trying to port it to GadgetBridge which would be ideal.

Alternative of the Meta Horizon application. Features: - Compatible with Oculus / Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S, Pro, Go; - Internet access is not required and not used. No AD, telemetry, etc...Cheburator2k (XDA Forums)
I think it's good enough for learning and doing something weird but Meta Quest 1 or 2 cost less (just checked 2nd hand local website and saw a few for 100€) and require 0 hardware work while providing 6DoF (leaning just a tad in your cockpit? Huge difference) and higher refresh rate.
Again, it's amazing to tinker but unless it's part of a both technical and ethical adventure then I believe there are better options out there already.

Because you pay with data. Quest is the first device, where meta has full control over the Operation System, and even beyond.
You are forced to have a meta account to use it, IRCC
You did but not anymore :
- Go can be rooted officially
- Quest 1/2/3/3s can be used without account thanks to PrivateQuest
- Quest 3 v78 (not newer OS version) can be rooted via a hack
So yes, by default you are paying with data. In fact IMHO if possible one should not rely on Meta hardware. That being said if you get e.g. a 2nd hand Quest 2 or 3 and use it without an account then you might be providing little to no money to Meta and no data. It's not trivial but it's feasible. Arguably it's even easy for somebody who seriously consider such an endeavor of assembling their own HMD.
PS: Meta has access to the whole device but... they are not owning the OS itself, it's still an Android device. The OS is very much driven by Google. In fact it's quite interesting to consider that Meta failed to develop their own OS and that Google is shipping soon AndroidXR.
Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?

Honest question: what do you use instead? I've been trying to reduce my reliance on Amazon but often find that other stores are either a lot more expensive or so shady that I wouldn't trust them to actually send what I ordered.
Fortunately I've found some good stores for board games and home electronics / gaming / multimedia but often, when I just need some random thing like replacement pads for my headphones, it's hard to find a good source that isn't either Amazon or Ali Express.
So first of all - I am in the EU and I live in a big city.
The most important step is to question your own consume. Often I don't need a specific thing, or I do not need it within 3 days. But let's assume I really want that thing.
It is hard to tell what I use instead, because there is no direct replacement for Amazon, but many smaller vendors instead, like how a market is supposed to work, if not controlled by US megacorps.
In general, for all the small tech stuff, in 95% of the cases the vendor on Amazon is also on eBay. Sometimes it costs some bucks more, but I am willing to pay that because subsidies due to people pissing in bottles needs to be compensated.
For computer stuff there is always some shop, I just use geizhals to find the cheapest option (which often is not Amazon). Mind factory comes to my mind.
For clothes I go to town, or order them in their online shops if I know exactly what size I need.
Books, I order them online in my local book store, and then I get get them the next day there.
Let me know what product interests you and I try to answer.. But in general I am trying to limit my consumption and ask myself 3 times if I really need something.

The major problems for me are small accessories for electronics like SD cards, cables and so on. I could go to Müller or MediaMarkt but especially for those smaller items, they often only have stuff from HAMA which is insultingly expensive for the quality they offer. Specialized online stores like Reichelt may have a cheaper option but when my 5€ cable comes with 6€ of shipping costs on top, I'm back to square one. The optimal solution would be to wait until there are multiple things that I need to spread the shipping costs over multiple products but when something breaks and I need a replacement, that's often not an option.
Another point are niche ingredients for international cooking that I can't get at any of the local Asian or Middle-Eastern supermarkets.
So yeah, ebay, probably...
MediaMarkt is ripoff. So yep, eBay. Bought several SD cards and cables there this year. I can really recommend taking a look. It's a bit of extra effort and sometimes maybe a couple of bucks more, but that's a price I am willing to pay for ditching amazon.
As an example, the last time I bought an SD card it was 6,95€ for a San disk 32 Gb ultra
I haven’t bought anything from Amazon since last November and I live in a small city. I’m also not shopping at Target or Walmart which also severely reduces options.
For that weird one-off stuff I’ve been using eBay. I hadn’t used eBay for probably 2 decades and in my mind it was still an online auction house, but a friend convinced me to give it a chance. He sells on eBay and assured me when there is a dispute they always side with the buyer and most things can just be bought outright. And a lot of the stuff in brand new.
I’ve also bought a couple things direct from the manufacturer that I normally would have previously gone to Amazon for. It’s more expensive but not so much so that it bugs me more than giving the money to Bezos would.
I haven’t used it for any auctions since coming back to it after 20 years, just “buy now”. And yes, you have to be carful you’re not buying from China. I found the same issue with Amazon, particularly when buying less mainstream things.
I’m open to suggestions but in my particular situation, it’s the best option I’ve found.
I used Amazon once more tan 20 years ago, then I found that local dealers that actually paid taxes and respected workers rights here, they were just as cheap or very very close, and had just as fast delivery, and way better service.
Idiots and sociopaths use Amazon because they are idiots or sociopaths or both.

not an excuse for proclaiming it hasn’t happened.
I never claimed it hasn't, how did you arrive at that conclusion???
Just because it was always rubbish doesn't mean it can't get worse.
But I can see I've been downvoted at the current time by 4 idiots or sociopaths.
It's funny that people never know, even when they are told.
But hey that's OK, that's the direction the world has taken. I just wish I didn't have to run into them all the time, but I guess by the numbers it's unavoidable.
What happened is that it's got worse. It wasn't always this bad by a long shot.
The article goes into quite some detail on what has changed.
What happened is that it’s got worse. It wasn’t always this bad by a long shot.
You are repeating yourself, as I wrote above, I never claimed it wasn't, just that it was always bad.
The article goes into quite some detail on what has changed.
Doesn't make an ounce of difference, people will continue to use it, just as they always did, and Amazon will continue to fuck their workers and cheat their customers and cheat on taxes, just as they always did. The bigger and richer they get, the more they will fuck both customers employers and society. That's the nature of a complete sociopath with no contact to reality like Jeff Bezos.
But as I stated above, that's perfectly OK, because nobody will do anything, especially Americans where half the population actively support that shit.
Do I sound negative here? You bet I'm negative, because as I wrote earlier, I saw this shitshow 2 decades ago, but what good does it do to see evil rise, and warn against it, when nobody cares?
I bet that article contains very little I didn't predict at least a decade ago, monopolistic abuse, declining service at increasing cost, extreme waste in the name of efficiency, environmental problems, work safety problems, horrendous working condition.
But you know the ONE thing I don't give a shit about, is if people receive worse service, because that was the easiest prediction of all, because that's always how it ends with near monopoly giants.
Just get over yourselves, and shop somewhere else. If you can't get it anywhere else, you don't need it.
I saw this shitshow 2 decades ago
You didn't see it 2 decades ago, because this isn't what it was like 2 decades ago. Maybe you predicted it 2 decades ago, but it wasn't actually happening, so no surprised that few people did anything about it.
Just get over yourselves, and shop somewhere else. If you can’t get it anywhere else, you don’t need it.
And making noise about it, so that other people who might be aware subconsciously that it's got worse, but who are still using the worse service in spite of other possibilities? No? That's bad, according to you, is it?
Boooo.
"More than 20 years ago", as you put it, in 2005, Amazon did not sell much more than books, and they did not ship to Europe yet.
If you are going to lie, make it at least believable.
I disagree. I’m old and Pepperidge farm remembers 😀
Back in the day, there was “no way I’m sticking my credit card numbers into the internet.” People were MORE likely to give out credit card numbers over the phone, or write them down on a piece of paper ripped out of a magazine and mail it. Crazy, I know, but true.
Amazon was cool because it became the first big digital store. You could order all kinds of quality stuff, from the comfort of your house, CHEAPLY, and then they shipped it to your doorstep. If you joined prime - they delivered in two days. Full stop. Oh - it didn’t make it there in two days? Here’s compensation.
Let’s compare that to today:
1) quality? No - now it’s endless cheap crap from resellers an middleman vultures
2) from the comfort of your own home? Everyone can do that today
3) cheap? Nope - amazon is now almost always either more expensive or the same exact price as buying from the manufacturer directly.
4) Shipped to your doorstep in two days? Amazon falls down on this all the time now. Sometimes the thing shows up in hours if it’s stored locally, other times it takes weeks.
Amazon lost its way. We ditched our decades old membership and shopping habits. We save more money, stuff gets delivered faster, we don’t worry about getting knockoff crap, and cutting Amazon out of our lives has been a total non issue. (Surprisingly - I thought it would be much more inconvenient than it’s been)
Agree with everything here.... but this isnt news
Half of the posts in this community are just opinion pieces...
We need to have some community standards.
We only use Amazon when its the only fulfillment option available. What I've noticed about amazon over the last 5+ years is that it feels like cable/broadcast TV ads do now.
In the rare case I end up watching TV with ads I find them so obnoxious and/or off-putting that I can't believe they actually sell anything. If anything they put me off the product. And that's how Amazon feels too.
China is beating the US in battle for energy export dominance
This is a continuation of a trend. The US hit a record in oil exports in 2024, according to the Energy Information Administration. Yet, China’s clean technology exports were US$30 billion higher.“Clean energy exports are hardware, which once a country has bought it, will generate electricity for a decade or two to come,” said Mr Greg Jackson, chief executive of Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest energy retailer. “Whereas with gas, the day you buy it, you use it, it’s gone forever.”

When my partner "came out" to me, they didn't really do much of anything to follow through and begin making changes. I think because there's so much to do and no guide to do it.
So one day we were at a loose end I said "let's just goto the hair dresser and you can ask them for an appropriate haircut"
And so our very lovely hairdresser became the 2nd person to learn their real name and did a fantastic job sorting out an appropriate hairstyle. Something that is still important to my partner now.
From being the first person they told about their transition IRL, to all the little times I've nudged and supported them taking the next step, it's been a joy and privilege to do that. I feel blessed by their trust and by being close to such beautiful change towards authenticity.
Inside China’s gigantic iPhone factory: long hours, discrimination and pay delays
Cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/43530586
ArchivedChinese factory staff assembling Apple’s latest iPhone continue to face precarious conditions, working many hours of overtime, suffering wage delays and discrimination against ethnic minorities, according to a leading labour rights group.
China Labor Watch (CLW) found that more than half of the estimated 200,000 workers employed during peak season at the world’s largest iPhone factory run by Foxconn in Zhengzhou are seasonal staff known as “dispatch workers”. This is despite a Chinese law capping the use of such staff at 10 per cent of a company’s workforce.
US-based CLW, which specialises in undercover investigations of Chinese factories, also found that dispatch workers faced staggered payment schedules that withhold part of their wages to deter them from quitting during peak production.
These staff were not entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees, such as paid sick leave, paid holiday and social insurance that includes medical coverage and pension contributions. CLW also claimed that there is systematic discrimination in hiring certain ethnic minorities and pregnant women.
[...]
"Despite Apple’s repeated pledges to improve conditions over the past decade, our investigation finds that core labour issues remain,” said Li Qiang, founder of CLW and author of the report released on Thursday.
"Apple’s supply chain continues to depend on a vast, disposable workforce.”
[...]
Many of the workers interviewed added that conditions compared favourably with those of other local manufacturers, citing air conditioning, hot water, recreational facilities and canteen subsidies.
An economic downturn in China and rising youth unemployment have narrowed options for jobseekers. A 23-year-old who trained as a Chinese teacher said she had worked at Foxconn for two months: “If I can’t find another job, I might come back.”
But two of the people who spoke said Foxconn’s recruitment platform, which the agencies use to upload CVs, rejects applications from ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Huis, who are not local to Henan.
[...]
One worker who had been at the plant for more than a month said that she typically worked two and a half hours of overtime each day, six or seven days a week. “Some managers have bad attitudes,” she said. “We work hard, but they keep pushing and squeezing us.”

Apple is a corporation that makes 30% operating margins.
companiesmarketcap.com/apple/o…
That means that on average, for any product sold $1000, they make $300.
Apple also hates open source software. They use their proprietary operating system to jail users. They force developers to pay huge fees. This is total abuse. Imagine if Microsoft suddenly banned Windows users from installing software outside Microsoft. Imagine if Microsoft required developers to pay them 20% on all software sales
FUCK APPLE
Apple (AAPL) - Operating Margin
Current and historical Operating Margin charts for Apple (AAPL).companiesmarketcap.com
Maybe 20 years ago, but that hasn't been the case for awhile now. There's a reason textile manufacturing moved most of their operations to countries like Bangladesh where you can shove 1000 workers and 1000 sewing machines into an un-airconditioned building, and then skip town instead of paying your workers.
Manufacturing stays here because while unskilled labor is only very cheap instead of dirt cheap, China has cheaper inputs like electricity, materials, machinery, skilled labor, and access to the Chinese market.
Of course they still have a long way to go, but a median wage of 124K RMB (17K USD) isn't terrible when you can get a good meal for 10 RMB and rent a 2bd in most cities that aren't Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo.
The report is about much more than 'only' the pay, but as you mention it: We must distinguish per capita disposable income from GDP per capita. GDP per capita calculates the total value of all goods and services produced in a country divided by the population, which doesn't reflect the income available to individual citizens and households.
For this reason we must look at the disposable income per capita, which measures the amount of money people can actually use, and we see a completely different picture.
In 2024, China’s national per capita disposable income reached RMB 41,314 (US$5,800 at the current rate), according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. Income disparities between urban and rural areas remain significant as already mentioned.
If it's true that you can "rent a 2bd in most cities that aren’t Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo", you'd spend half of your disposable income on the rent (except in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where you spend considerably more).
It is noteworthy that this data comes from official Chinese sources.
But again, the linked report clearly suggests that workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, are work overly long hours, and things like these. It's a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.
Median and average is not the same, the comparison doesn't make sense as you say yourself.
And it has nothing to do with the linked report. This is not only about pay. It's is essentially about poor workers' rights in China.
These are measures. What I 'think' they are is simply irrelevant.
But I think the linked report has nothing to do with this. It clearly suggests that Chinese workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, work overly long hours, and things like that. It’s a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.
I get 404 not found at that link.
That would be a HUGE median income jump. Which is sure is true although I'm very skeptical that the CCP is actually giving the real number instead of an inflated number (granted, the #s 10 years ago were probably similarly inflated so the increase % is probably close)

The Bodies On Mount Everest And The Haunting Stories Behind Them
There have been more than 300 deaths on Earth's tallest mountain — and the bodies on Mount Everest serve as a grisly reminder for those who follow.Katie Serena (All That's Interesting)
What the fuck is one climber doing on Mt. Everest?
Your chances of dying are much higher than making it to the summit. It's only a mountain; what's the big deal anyway? There are much safer ways to get exercise and fulfillment; stay on level ground and live.
Why yeeeeesssssss, I haaaaaaaave. Remind me how that matters at all, considering we are talking about the specific selection that is being made? Here, since I was already using wikipedia as a source:
Selection bias is the bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups, or data for analysis in such a way that the association between exposure and outcome among those selected for analysis differs from the association among those eligible`
Note that selection bias is when you are sampling. We're not talking about a sample here, we're talking about the entire population. In statistics, we call that a parameter. It's generally rare that you can accurately determine a parameter, but since the amount of people who have tried to summit everest is so small, and records have been pretty good (aye, we're certainly missing a few), that 400/13000 number is pretty damn close.
Every last CEO, internet influencer and wealthy investor in the world has "climbing Everest" on their bucket list to validate their identities and they want all their employees to see the pictures of them spending absurd amounts of money to climb a mountain and a see a view almost as high as a passenger airliner.
I've said for a while that Nepal and China will have to do something drastic soon.
The deaths and trash and bodies are piling up, and eventually it's going to make the entire "adventure" so repulsive that people are going to stop spending tens of thousands to go try to climb a rock.
Either they're going to radically restrict access to the mountain, or if they really want to keep the tourism money coming, they will have to consider developing the region. Concrete and asphalt basecamp with roads to nearby cities, facilities and helipads and a reinforced complex of resorts and hotels designed to withstand storms and with oxygen bars on every level. Stairs and guardrails all the way up to the summit and drone-patrols watching for people passing out.

It's fucking stupid that there were that many people on that mountain in the first place. Climbing it is like a millionaires bucket list item, so many of those assholes do it.
I know it brings in a lot of money, so this will never happen, but I'd like to see the mountain completely closed. Pay the Sherpas to bring down all the dead bodies, then give them a pension. Some billionaire will no doubt try to buy their way in, but don't let them. Keep some things sacred above money, tell them to fuck off.

I gotta admit, I'm never upset when I hear about tourists dying on everest.
Rich people deserve every bad thing that happens to them until they give up their wealth or it's taken by force.
To me, it's not necessarily people climbing it that's the issue. It's that some people have so little respect for everyone and everything that they're perfectly content to use the world as their own personal trash can.
I shit you not, I recently chewed some lady out on the hiking trail 2 miles from my house because she chucked the plastic bowl and spoon from her lunch off into the woods, in front of God and everybody like it's just no big deal. Well it's a big fucking deal to me.
And if a person can't manage to go on a hike or scale a mountain without leaving their garbage behind like a slob, then they should stay home.

There is absolutely no valid reason you can give for this. You're literally excusing hurting nature because someone decided to do something that they couldn't handle, how does that make sense?
I'm not excusing a single thing, only stating a fact.
Lemmy sometimes makes me feel like I'm surrounded by small children or autists. My 12-yo daughter is autistic and even she has more social discernment than you fuckers.
"I don't like your statement of fact! And I'm taking that statement to mean you love that fact! Fuck you!"
Saw a commenter get downvoted to hell for clearly stating someone else's take on a thing. They made it clear they were explaining someone else's stance.
Lemmy: "Fuck you!"
If you like facts then you should know that “Autist” Is a rather controversial term in the autistic community, with many finding it dehumanising, and with a significant proportion of those who use it themselves doing so to “reclaim” it in an n-word-like “it’s okay when i say it, but not when you say it” way.
And if you really do have an autistic daughter, then you might want to do some internal reflection on why you think being “surrounded by […] autists” Is negative enough to use as an insult. Those kinds of attitudes can have negative impacts on children and can lead to internalised ableism. And if it’s not the kind of attitude you would show around her, then it’s worth asking yourself why not.
All the money in the world won't get you to the summit. And if you make it that far, you're not even halfway out of danger. The way down is so fucking brutal, people can't carry the extra weight of trash.
Money just gives you a ticket to ride, won't get you to the summit.
And if you think Sherpas are capable of carry frozen corpses down, that tells me you're ignorant on this subject. Read Into Thin Air if you want to know more. It's one of the most surprising non-fiction books I've read.
Into Thin Air x 100
Reading that book made me decide trying to climb Everest is a bad idea.
After reading that book, I laugh at the comments around here thinking a summit is available to anyone with the money. Aside from the dangers, I was astonished at how long people have to stay at the various camps to acclimate.
"Lazy fucks just leave their trash up there!"
Well, a couple of pounds of gear can easily be the difference in life and death.
EDIT: Should not have commented this around a bunch of fat fucks who don't leave their couch, let alone read about summiting Everest.
Hiked a few miles today. Flat terrain, super easy except for the sandy bits. Anyway, I no longer carry a pistol because that's 3lbs. of steel and ammo I don't need. BIG difference.

It is 100% overly wealthy, selfish people and the service workers they’ve trapped with them.
Spending thousands on gear, then going all the way to Nepal (a less developed country) to climb a mountain is the very definition of “overly wealthy.”
Nothing says “I don’t care about anyone else” like insisting on being the millionth tough guy to climb a mountain, just to say they did.
I think this should be part of the risk. Leave them up there and clean the bodies up when it thaws.
Additionally those are very important source of revenues for Nepalis…
Oh, that includes all of the equipment, flights, and transportation?
For one person, right? Comparing it to a family vacation proves my point. A douchebag insisting on going to a big mountain seems a little different than a family vacation…
I will never mind speaking in absolutes about this. If you care about going to Everest, you are a selfish asshole. Full stop. I don’t care that it’s affordable for you, that’s part of the problem.
I don’t care if the locals rely on the abuse, it’s still abuse.
Dude you have very weird and specific perspectives. To each their own doesn’t ring a bell? Is it an Everest specific issue or do you sell wholesale for other destinations as well?
Take that hait energy and make something positive out of it instead…
It’s actually ok to not like harmful things! It’s called having integrity.
Your arrogance is astounding.
My arrogance ? Sure is.. I’m the one judging everyone….
where do you draw the line of harmful things? We are by nature harmful things to a degree with all our activities…
This is not a valuable conversation, because I’ve already told you where I draw the line: somewhere BEFORE “I want to climb Everest.”
The fact that you can’t tell the difference between people traveling all the way to Everest and “everyone” makes me think you’re a bot or a troll.
Again, being judgmental is valuable, this conversation is not.
Billionaires shouldn’t exist, people shouldn’t go to Everest because they are insecure.
Not hard to understand. “But—” nothing.
Ok, you’re not even reading. Pathetic. I’ll block you now, bye!
Oh yeah there’s totally no difference between having a phone and going to Nepal to climb a mountain…
Genuinely: how fucking stupid are you?
I almost said computer but realized that couldn't be assumed. Fine, a phone is closer to a necessity.
There is still basically no difference between this and any other hobby that involves something manufactured by people in poor countries other than proximity to the people doing the labor. You are just mad that people who have either a bit or a lot more money for their hobbies have a hobby that doesn't appeal to you personally.
My whole point is that it is such a specific and hateful position… the guy should really chill down a bit.
At the very least I have an adopted brother over there that depends on tourists
That's the point, and that's why the guy is not "chill" about it.
Tourism is very much a colonial economy when there is income inequity. I am sorry that your adopted brother depends on tourists for income, but that does not justify the inequity.
If you were to hire a Sherpa in the Alps or Canada, you'd be paying a hell of a lot more for the privilege of the climb. So tell us again why these rich folks get away with paying so little...
When you make the argument that the locals depend on the income, you are also implying that it's OK the locals earn so little without these rich folks.
Nope, I’m not saying any of that. I’m just happy that he -specifically he who I very much know- can eat because some tourists pay him for his art. So in that frame it is not all negative.
Whatever the price is really, he comes from living in a monastery in India to going back to his home country and being able to sustain himself with that money.
System is not perfect but at least he eats.
If you worry about that you’ll have to consider all other inequalities in manufacturing as well… or in IT…. So why just that one example ?
You got that fucking backwards, sir.
One does not ask the oppressed to change the abusive relationship, one speaks to the pricks paying 50k to leave their actual feces and trash on a mountain to check a box.
Money alone won't get you up there. No matter how many Sherpa's you hire, it's brutal. People spends weeks and weeks at the various base camps just to acclimate, and that does nothing to add to their strength.
And yes they leave literal shit and O2 bottles. Carrying a few extra pounds on the way down could kill you. You have to give it nearly all you got to summit, then the descent is even more dangerous.
We could argue shutting down the mountain, but I've never heard of a solution to remove the trash. You have to carry it up, you can't carry it down.
Read Into Thin Air if you want to know more. I won't read it again, too brutal.
I read another headline earlier, something like "Blizzard strands 1000 people on Mt Everest."
And my early morning brain went "ugh Blizzard really is an awful company, going way too overboard with their promotional material." I wasn't even that surprised.
Now I see this headline and that earlier one makes more sense 😂
While it's tragic that the mountain is going to add to its death toll on this, the idea of people queued up on the world's tallest peak just for limited-time virtual merch, made me chuckle a bit.
After that all those years ago, I'm feel like stunts like that are far more plausible than ever.
Edit: I also keep forgetting about the stuff RedBull does these days...

Police to get new powers to crack down on repeated protests, says Home Office
Ministers are to give police new powers to target repeated protests, aimed particularly at cracking down on demonstrations connected to Gaza, the Home Office has said.
The announcement, made the morning after almost 500 people were arrested in London for expressing support for Palestine Action, a proscribed organisation, could allow police to order regular protests to take place at a different site.
Civil liberty groups express concern over plan for more anti-protest powers
Home secretary says police can consider ‘cumulative impact’ of rallies as Palestine Action ban opponents vow ‘escalation’Peter Walker (The Guardian)
Maybe you need to be the ones getting locked up in opposition then, because the silence has been deafening.
Sorry, you personally might not be in support of genocide if it benefits Israel, but that is how it looks.
Look at the US: a lot of Zionists aren't Jews but instead they're Christians.
The Zionists claim they represent the Jewish People (same as the NAZIs claimed they represented the Arian Race) but in reality they just represent themselves and other hateful individuals for whom the "lesser races" need to be taught their place.
Latching onto an "identity" is a pretty standard Fascist technique, though generally it's a nationality rather than an ethnicity (and, curiously, the Fascists who latch onto an ethnicity - such as NAZIs and Zionists - are significantly more murderous than the ones who latch onto a nationality - such as the Italian or Spanish Fascists).
And they were accusing protestors of taking police resources away from protecting synagogues after the Manchester terror attack. While they've been arresting old and disabled people for holding fucking signs.
This Labour government continues to hit new lows, they have honestly become worse than the Tories where civil liberties are concerned. They will do anything to protect Israel. They don't work for the British people, they work for Tel Aviv.
Well, the actual individuals in Government in the UK right now were literally given their position by Israel when Israel-linked Jewish Organisations in the UK spearheaded a campaign of slandering Corbyn and the Labour Party under his leadership as "anti-semitic", directly leading to his resignation and replacement with these people.
In the First Past The Post anti-Democratic voting system in Britain, leadership of the Labour Party means an almost certainty of getting into Government in the next 8 years, hence how Israel put them in power in the UK by giving them the Labour leadership.
Israel bought them and (pretty much the only positive thing about these people) they stayed bought.
I think the Met needs to ask themselves if they are police or government goons. Police can choose what they feel they need to enforce if they are concerned about escalating a situation.
Interesting note: I saw the chair of the Met Police Federation was saying that officers are sick of the position they have been put in and is calling for politicians and senior officers to sort it out.
Today the home office says "go harder!".
- Until recently any word against Israel was met with the antisemitism hammer. I don't think they realise how outdated that view is.
- Their hands are deep in the cookie jar. They've been supplying arms for 50+ years. "You weren't meant to kill people with them!"
- Trump in particular doesn't really care. All he sees is an opportunity to make money rebuilding Gaza.
- U.K. leadership has a real problem standing in opposition to Trump. They'll insult him in private, but whisper sweet nothings into his ear when in person. They think they're being clever. They're not.
BREAKING: Israeli authorities have beaten Greta Thunberg, made her kiss Zionist flag

For those of you doubting the claims for lack of evidence, stating that you'll "wait for the facts" or evidence before allowing yourslf to be outraged—
Where is your outrage for the countless other people who were there who personally testified to being beaten, abused, and paraded around like trophies?
There are already multiple interviews with Chris Smalls, a black American labor organizer, who directly confirmed that he had been beaten, choked, packed like a sardine into a small cell, sleep deprived, strip searched, and completely brutalized by the Israeli navy and prison system.
Ask yourself—why does this need to have happened to the appropriately aged, white, European female on a 4k, live streamed or recorded feed with corroborating testimony by the Israelis and the national newspapers of the country of origin of the supposed victim—why is that the bar you've set for credulity?
What does that say about you or your reaction to the situation?
Wake. Up.
Fuck the details, fuck the squabbling over what constitutes "roughness" versus physical assault. Fuck the inclination to want to hear "the other side" of the story. Things are going horribly wrong in Israel/Palestine—in a place that we've all been told over and over is supposed to be demonstrably above reproach. If even half these claims are true—if even a single one of them is true—what GOOD is it preserving the supposed beacon of democracy in the middle east when they treat foreigners this way?
Even if you think these activists are mentally unwell, or menaces, or being performative, or just doing this for "selfies"—so what? We all know these activists are obviously not terrorists and at least some of them genuinely believe what they are doing. None of this justifies their treatment. Nothing justifies the richest and proudest countries on earth—however much you might agree with that claim—what GOOD is that if our prisons condemn people to absolute squalor and abandonment to the whims of their guards?
HOW is this any different from the indignity camps? These peoples possessions were seized as trophies , their clothes taken, their bodies crammed together like chattel. Do there need to be ovens for there to be discernable lines? Must you feel the radiant heat on your own brows before you'll indulge the sensation that something isn't right here?
Wake. Up.
Funny how people did the exact same thing regarding the concentration camps the Nazis operated. People chose not to believe the reports they heard from the inside regarding the horrendous and deadly conditions. They "waited for the facts" which of course did not come out until after several years of grinding gruelling war, and well after the final solution began and the gas chambers were operational.
There's evidence enough as it all stands right now to know that Greta is being tortured and abused, and her human rights violated, as we know so many Palestinians have already been for decades and continue to be every day. Hell, the Israeli officials are constantly publicly bragging about the violations of human rights and international law they're committing, so maybe even listen to them when they do so?
So let's spread potential misinformation instead! Banzai!
(There's enough evidence of Netanyhau and Israel's atrocities not to have to potentially make shit up.)
Indeed, but that isn't my primary concern, since we have as much responsibility to call out their bullshit. Problem is that the media gets bored after one pass and never tried to correct the record.
A responsible CNN for example would call Trump out at every opportunity during live presentations and not broadcast anything pre-recorded that Trump says that doesn't have a basis in fact or hold any value to the public otherwise (like trump rambling nonsense reveals his worsening senility, which is handy to know).
FOX News isn't even worthy of criticism it's so utterly captured by the conservative propaganda machine.
Well yeah, but we've got plenty of facts already. Decades of facts, in fact.
It's like climate change. Yes, we're constantly learning new things, but the fact that we are in crisis is not disputable.
We have more than enough facts to condemn and convict Israel and Netanyahu of crimes against humanity.
From Hamas official statements. They hold civilians hostage which is a war crime. They've massacred villages which is genocide.
Do you deny Hamas committed genocide? Are you a genocide denier?
Pamasich likes this.
Armed resistance ain't genocide homeboy. Israeli targetted civilian population, used white-phosphorous & counter-bombardment in a densely-populated area.
Hamas targetted military personnel.
This kind of new atheist rhetoric is a distraction at best.
The actual problem is zionism.
While I wouldn't wish this on anyone, it's amazing how self-destructive this is. Greta is an internationally famous activist. Flagrantly violating and abusing a person with world renown - along with dozens of other activists - is a radically stupid way to hasten international isolation.
It is well known by most in Israel that the country simply cannot function in isolation. It will lead to collapse. In this, they are giving the flotilla far more power to eventually overthrow the ruling regime.
Respectfully:
Are you genuinely interested in exercising neutral skepticism? Or are you just arguing on the Internet against claims that run counter to your preferences for what you'd like to be true?
(Be honest.)
Does this cut both ways? Because I agree with what you: we should not reflexively believe sensationalist claims because they reinforce our preferred view of the world.
But under the exact same logic, we also should avoid dismissing sensationalist claims because they contradict our preferred view of the world.
Being aware of the manipulation you mentioned, and the fact that forces are trying to manipulate you in both directions on this issue... do you have any credible reason to dismiss testimony by Greta Thunberg to a Swedish diplomat regarding the treatment she experienced?
neutral skepticism?
Not OP but yes.
But it really doesn't matter. All we'll get from this incident is word-of-mouth only.
Those nazis are brazen but not stupid, they didn't film it.
lol hard doubt
edit: ~~to all those who can't employ critical thinking, representants for the swedish ministry of foreign affairs met Greta Thunberg on Saturday and received no reports of violence. She says there has been too little to eat and drink, she suspects there's bed bugs and she stated that she had to lay on hard surfaces. Nothing about what this article states, so unless it happened right after the embassy left, this is bull and only meant ragebait.~~
edit2: I would advice everyone to apply critical thinking when reading this article. It is framed in such a way as to invoke rage in readers and is probably not true.
Swedish representants for the foreign ministry has met with Greta which stated that there was lack of food and water and that they have to lay on hard surfaces in addition to receiving harsh treatment. No mentions of violence.
Now harsh treatment could cover a lot, but the fact that she hasn't mentioned that they were inflicted violence is a pretty strong indicator that this is not true.
In addition, swedish media hasn't covered this story which I have no doubt they would pick up on pretty fast since the flotilla and the genocide is well covered in media. This would be headlines to say the least.
If you can't understand why someone wouldn't go out in front of the world and make big statements in line with these claims, or any statement at all, immediately after a very traumatising experience then you really need to work on your empathy and understanding of basic human emotion. I understand your skepticism, to a point. I just gave a very obvious reason why she hasn't talked about the harrowing things she went through in detail to the public straight away, whether they are as is said in this article or not. Even thinking about them is going to be very difficult for her, nevermind doing what you're expecting
Edit: Taken out a sentence that isn't relevant, as I thought you were the OP of this comment thread before
I don't disagree with the sentiment at all, I just think when you report news like this, you do it responsibly. One of the reasons we're in the situation that we're in with massive distrust of institutions on the one hand, but widespread believe in conspiracy theories on the other is because fact checking has fled a lot of buildings, and depending on your biases people either doubt everything or believe everything dogmatically. There are other reasons of course, and root causes. But it sucks and is tearing us apart.
The Guardian article is worded much more equivocally. "Another detainee" claims she had to kiss the flag. She has given statements herself, but hasn't corroborated the other claims including of her own having been forced to do so. Heresay in general and limited sources.
All I'm asking is that articles make this obvious and don't sensationalize, like the article posted by OP. Whatever the case, the abuses by Israel we have solid evidence for are bad enough.
Israel accused of detaining Greta Thunberg in infested cell and making her hold flags
Activist tells Swedish officials she has been subjected to harsh treatment, including insufficient food and waterLorenzo Tondo (The Guardian)
Mate can you actually read? I replied to your comment to push back against you expecting Greta to be standing up on a platform and immediately talking about all of this stuff to the world when she's going to be very traumatised. And that she would be whether what the article says is true or not. That's it. Nothing else
My whole point has been about that, not about the article and it's accuracy. The only times I've said anything about the latter is cos you keep somehow not understanding that I'm not talking about the accuracy of the article and bringing it back up again. And even then the only thing I really said in response to that was pushing back against you saying The Canary is niche when it actually isn't really. And also telling you to read it, seeing as you clearly hadn't from what you've said in replies. You didn't understand entirely what you were arguing against in the article and now you're not understanding my point at all and have somehow gone off thinking I'm saying things that I'm not
She’s still a little kid. They made her suffer.
I think that's needlessly infantilizing her. She's 22. She's not a "little kid". I think she's old enough for her opinions to carry weight, so how is she a "little kid"?
I mean, I feel you, I remember aggroing over verbiage like that when I was younger, but as I am now approaching my upper 30s, I find myself referring to basically 25 yos and under as 'kids', its not necesarrily always meant in a demeaning, infantilzing way, can be meant more in the sense of...
... 'has their whole life ahead of them still, it shouldn't be marred or maimed or traumatized this early' /
/ 'they are adults technically yes, but they have far less experience than most other adults' /
/ 'they are too young to be beset by such cruelty and hardship, there should be other adults being better adults such that these awful things do not happen.'
I guess what I am trying to say is it becomes a kind of genuine, broad protective connotation, not trying to be belittling, moreso a lament that the world has failed.
Maybe call it a bungled attempt at intergenerational solidarity.
The thing is, she wasn't just called a kid, but a "little kid".
Sure, I'd call early 20s kids too. Hell, I'm a kid, I'm only turning 30 this year. But I wouldn't call someone a "little kid" once they hit their teenage years. The "little" is what makes the difference in tone. Could've said "she's just a kid" and it would've been a believable attempt at intergenerational solidarity.
With the most moral army in the world no less
Zionist gaslighting is second to none.
Once again another assumption, I was saying they're wrong in assuming no one here is posting this to other places, you don't know what we're doing, they just went on the attack from the get go and that's an immediate way to alienate instead of cooperate.
I get you're mad, the situation is atrocious, you cannot control it, you can control how you respond to it.
Regardless of what your opinions on Palestine might be, Israel really isn't beating the allegations right now.
I remember what I learned in school about this, it was described as a territory dispute between two equal belligerents. Maybe that was true 30 years ago, I don't know, but it really doesn't describe what's going on right now.
The war is over. Israel won, Palestine barely even exists anymore. This is the part where you're supposed to facilitate aid and win over the losers to your side. dafuq flavor of genocide you dune Israel?
of course, nobody who needs to read this will ever see it. I'm just upset that this kind of thing can even happen in current year.
Of course the second, I'm looking at current events like it's still 2015. not sure why I'm doing that, but fuck does current events make me miss 2015.
it was described as a territory dispute between two equal belligerents. Maybe that was true 30 years ago
It was never true. Israel has had the upper hand since it was founded. Colonialist oppressors always hold their positions through overwhelming force. Israel is no exception.
"They dragged little Greta (Thunberg) by her hair in front of our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her as a warning to others.
She’s still a little kid. They made her suffer"
I seriously doubt this is true.
and
Greta Thunberg is 22.
I think there were already plenty of reasons before that, so the condition is unnecessary here.
edit: maybe you really meant if(true) so it's fine.
It's lost the right to be a country
That seems rather extreme. It's never really been a thing to wipe out other warmongering, genocidal countries. Why them?
Something very similar was seriously considered for Germany at the end of WW2. Basically, wipe out all industry of Germany, make it an agricultural nation, and skilled workers can migrate to other countries. That's about as close as it gets to remove a country.
With that said, I believe Israel should be allowed to continue existing. But it should go trough a process like de-Nazification.
She is a rich white girl that's why why is doing shit like this otherwise she would have been shot long ago.
Al Jazeera has a different report. They say she was dragged, not beaten.
I cannot understand the language spoken in that X video, there is no translation, and there are no free publicly available no-login X.com video translation options that I can find.
Additionally I cannot find the cnn turk video from this activist on the internet anywhere but this x link.
I would be very surprised if they actually did what this post describes because everyone would be outraged. She's a sweetheart and so many eyes are watching what they do.
I dont understand how this shit gets upvoted so high....
Its the same thing maga people do: "the mainstream media is biased, so i'll just get my news from random blogs and websites...."

Hassan? pretty underwhelming, in short, dog is walking around on this treadmill kind of thing, looks to me almost obvious that his dew claw got snagged on it and he yelps, roughly at the same time hassan's hand is out of frame for a few seconds (that some are claiming he is pushing a shock remote).
oh and someone found a 2 year old clip of him saying that his friend gave him a shock collar that is laying around his house but he'd never use.
Along with drawn child porn he claimed were "goblin coded" and "shortstack" but came from lolicon artists.
Not relevant to the meme though
The dog is a girl, the appears to bend her ankle on the dog bed (it’s a stretchy material, the dog bed is like one of those fancy office chairs’ material) and the yell. Hasan was reaching off frame and that is “evidence” that he “must have” been abusing her with a 10000 volt shock therapy to make her gay or something.
Imagine that we didn’t even needAI to make people believe fake shit with no evidence.
It's kind of depressing to watch so many people just embrace this kind of naked smearing of someone.
I don't know Hasan's work. I know Vaush, and I think he frankly sucks. In either case, I'd rather people just say, 'Fuck that guy, I don't like him as a person' rather than diving into this practice of labeling everyone you don't like as a pedo or some other flavor of sick abusive pervert. It's gross.
My philosophy is that I personally don't know any internet personalities, so can't defend any actions they made unless they are complete lies. When watching the clip, it wasn't clear Hasan didn't shock his dog.
In the video, Hasan yelled at the dog, reached offscreen, the dog yelped, and Hasan didn't go to help.
And I am a Hasanabi fan. I greatly appreciate the work he has done for Palestine, and leftists agenda in the west. There is a universe where Hasan didn't shock his dog, was just annoyed at it, reached offscreen and for a seperate reason (like the dew claw getting caught), the dog yelped. But since none of us know Hasan personally, or privately, we can't tell.
Personally, I lay on the side of not believing it, because although there is evidence that the collar was a shock collar, I have seen streams/clips where Kaya runs around freely, greeting guests etc. Either way I will continue to watch him, because I value his political analysis, but don't freely defend strangers private lives on the internet.
Hasan supports the fascist takeover of Ukraine by Putin. He also supports fascist Iran-backed Hamas, the suppressors of Gaza. People like Hasan drag the left movement into the dirt so we will never take off.
At best, he is a grifter that found a profitable influencer nieche, at worst he is a psyop to herd and discredit us.
Also he appears to view himself as his dog's superior instead of his caretaker, which hints at a right-wing world view. Also shock collar user, so he's a tormentor.
I haven't seen any proof he did do it either. If we're weighing the circumstantial evidence available? There's much more pointing towards that dog being treated well than poorly.
I have also seen a lot of proof that there is a targetted smear campaign against him, which leads me to be a lot more critical of all the info presented by both sides.
It's so obvious that the dog was trained with a shock collar that the people pushing the idea have just spent the last few days using a clip with one of Hasans streamer/podcast friends popping his chewing gum into the mic as "proof" he's clicking a button to shock the dog...
For a guy who streams 6+ hours 6 days a week and has done for the entire time he's had the dog.
Almost like the entire thing is hysteria driven by weirdo freaks who have even weirder hate boners and will make things up based on literally nothing other than circumstance.
I've just never enjoyed his content tbh. He also encourages faith in American electoralism to an extent that makes me uncomfortable and participates in drama slop too much for me to enjoy.
I know that last bit may seems strange considering what I have posted but I generally do not directly consume internet drama. I have never seen anything from the channels of either of these people. I just hear about it from other people and go, haha funny.
He is hypocritical, claiming that he wants liberation and rights for all and then continuing to pay people to torture animals to death so he can get a little pleasure from it.
I don't unterstand why people are so hung up on the whole 'did he schock the dog or not' thing when they mostly pay for way worse stuff to be done to animals.
Hamas, the suppressors of Gaza
Fuck off back to reddit with the Zionist rhetoric.
I learned that the guy on the left is Hasan and thr guy on the right is Vaush by the comments. I then spent too long figuring out what the scale was....and it seems to be that there is no difference?
Both people seem to take fine care of their dogs? Fun fact: Abused animals don't crawl into your lap and expose their bellies for affection. That is a sign of mutual trust and companionship.

Rajoelina, 51, was first president from 2009 to 2014 before returning to power in 2023. He was increasingly isolated after losing the support of a key army unit that joined thousands of youths activists known as “Gen Z Madagascar” to protest against corruption and poverty. The movement had earlier turned down an invitation to meet him for dialogue and demanded his resignation....
Among the demonstrators were soldiers from the elite Capsat unit, which played a major role in the 2009 coup during Rajoelina’s rise to the presidency after mass protests forced his predecessor Marc Ravalomanana out of power.
I believe I read in another article that the soldiers that helped his return to power in 2023 also publicly called to oppose Rajoelina.
I don't really understand how the president was allowed to have dual citizenship. For senior positions in the judiciary/legislative/executive branch, I don't think dual citizenship should be allowed. You can make rare, special exceptions, but not for the presidency (or say the supreme court or party leadership).
He’s a French citizen and is perceived as supporting French interests in this former French colony whereas other presidents tried to move Madagascar in other directions.
Rajoelina took power after a military coup in 2009. He was a radio DJ and mayor of the capital city who encouraged the overthrow of the former president, so him getting overthrown himself is a pretty interesting turn of events.
Export grid view from qBittorrent?
At present, I have limited disk space for my media library, so occasionally I must purge content I've already watched or acquired long ago but never watched. I'm big into letting my winners run, so when choosing which content to purge, I want to just sort by Ratio in qBittorrent and start purging anything older than 30 days that isn't getting uploads. The problem is, more often than not I'm cross seeding the same content across multiple trackers, so although a specific torrent on a specific trackers may be performing poorly, that doesn't mean the same content isn't performing well on another tracker.
I know how to select, right click, and Copy > Name. Is there a way to export the grid view so that I can do some data manipulation in LibreCalc?
I've searched and stumbled upon this thread from over a year ago where it appears the OP is attempting something similar. I don't mind getting my hands dirty with the web UI and/or the API, but since I'm not a developer, I thought I'd check w/ the community before I go that route. Also, one of the commenters in the other thread that I linked mentions parsing the save data directly - are they talking about parsing the fastresume files or something else? Thanks!

Never needed to use this but have seen that tools like github.com/fedarovich/qbittorr… are able to export lists of loaded torrents in various formats, it might do what you want.
e.g. if you're going to load the output in LibreCalc then you probably want to export a list in csv format most likely (the project's wiki mentions it github.com/fedarovich/qbittorr…).
so when choosing which content to purge, I want to just sort by Ratio in qBittorrent and start purging anything older than 30 days that isn’t getting uploads. The problem is, more often than not I’m cross seeding the same content across multiple trackers, so although a specific torrent on a specific trackers may be performing poorly, that doesn’t mean the same content isn’t performing well on another tracker.
Something to consider for the future, you could re-work how you are storing your torrent data and hardlink all those cross-seeding torrents in their own folders. So if you do a full delete of one torrent + data it won't actually affect the torrent + data of other torrents. If you have it split out like that then you could even try to automate the whole process of deleting old torrents with tools like github.com/Hundter/qBittorrent… or github.com/Mythic82/Qbittorren…
On Linux it would be something like
cp -al /home/barnaclebill/mytorrents/trackera/thismovie.2025 /home/barnaclebill/mytorrents/trackerb/Would hardlink the same torrent data in two places so that torrents for trackera can point to the trackera folder and torrents for trackerb can point to the trackerb folder.

Thanks for the idea about exporting torrent data using the CLI - I'll look into that.
Re: linking, I currently use sym links to avoid duplicating storage across multiple trackers. My main reason for sym links is so I can link across different devices (my understanding is hard links are limited to the same device). Hard link or sym link aside, the problem is for a given torrent, I don't want to delete it from any trackers if it's performing on at least one of them. My thought process is if I'm keeping the content around for even just one of my trackers, I may as well keep cross seeding it, if for no other reason than to earn that sweet bon. The hard part is identifying which torrents are performing poorly across all trackers. If I can get the data into CSV format, then I think I can massage it well enough to tell which (poorly performing) torrents can be safely purged from all trackers.

Looking more like insider trading scam than AI bubble: Open AI raises commitments/partnerships to 36GW with new 10gw Broadcom deal
An AI bubble requires actual AI capabilities to be built and to fail to be called that. A stock trading scam on AI stocks is just a stock trading scam.
36GW is 36 times current US corporate owned AI datacenter capacity. All of it made at TSMC which runs full tilt as it is. TSMC's current plans is to 2x (over 3nm today) 2nm node by 2028. 4x by 2031 would still mean 2038ish to satisfy just OpenAI demand.
A big problem with having so many partners that OpenAI has no actual money to pay, is that no one has the confidence to place big TSMC capacity unless they are sure OpenAI actually buy from them, with money they get on time to buy from them. There are definitely consumer AI/gaming capabilities that can have more certain demand than the datacenter impossibilities.
Each additional announcement makes the joke more impossible to believe. CISCO did not do this during 1999 bubble. People just assumed its growth would continue.
Fine, OpenAI revenue growth may reach 3x at end of this year. At losses equal to its revenue number in 2024. OpenAI already has the most expensive models.

Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 19th October 2025
Want to wade into the sandy surf of the abyss? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.
Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.
If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.
The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

I mention billionaires specifically because the average Joe, the 99% of humanity being told to cut down their carbon footprint and delete emails to save water, is completely fucking blameless in this.
They didn't choose to have car-centric architecture forced on them for the past goddamn century, they didn't choose to have planet-wrecking crypto farms/NFTs forced on them a few years ago, and they sure as hell didn't choose to have planet-killing AI slop extruders forced on them, either.

Intel Compute Sticks - Making them useful (or fun)?
Edit: So one is definitely going to be the Proselytizer Library Stick (OK I need a better name for it, fine). Going to test out some Debian options on there, just need to find a nice way to make it a user friendly portable library/reader, so feel free to mention whatever comes to mind there as well.
But I have more of these little suckers, so thats just one for now.
So I've got a few Intel compute sticks sitting on my desk here, and I don't know what I want to do with them (aside from throw them out, I'd rather find some value in them if I can).
They are STK1AW32SC, which have the atom x5-Z8330 chips, with a whopping 2gb ram, 32gb emmc, and a microsd slot.
A few things I've considered:
- Take a few LCDs and the drivers and make a "household front end", basically just point to my locally hosted services (mealie for recipes, hass, etc)
- Same thing but make it a digital picture frame
- Compute to point to a magic mirror instance
- Try out how terrible emulation is on them to make a little game console for the kids thats standalone? They already can use the living room one for that, which is a usff box with a lot more power. So probably not.
- Automatically boots to rick roll to stick in TVs at my BILs house and drive him nuts?
Open to ideas! I've got tons of machines here, so I really don't need them to do anything - which means the silly and borderline stupid (see rick roll note above) are perfectly acceptable ideas.

I mostly just like to avoid the landfill if it can be avoided, now to find something to do with the other ones that have been sitting in the bin for a while...
They used to do digital signage work, but they've long since been replaced in my lab use, thus the issue with what to do with them now 😀
How much storage does it have? Google search indicates it may just be 32GB. With a small distro, you just maybe just barely fit text only Wikipedia on there with Kiwix (or whatever the Wikipedia archive reader is called.)
Alternatively, you could put some books from Project Gutenberg on there. Throw in some public domain music recordings, a freely available movie or two (like the ones from the blender project), and maybe some light weight open source games... Then, you could have have yourself a portable offline library which could be shared with no legal repercussions.
Its just the 32gb emmc + whatever you shove on an sdxc - technically supports up to 128gb (officially), but by spec its sdxc v3, so untested/unsupported up to 2tb. I've got a bunch of spares at 128gb or less so thats what I'll likely toss in.
I like the idea of a mini library.... but maybe a step further and drop in a front end to navigate books, with a lightweight ebook reader application, and put some anti-capitalist works on there? With a bonus of the AFAQ? Ooh and some anti-fascist materials....
I could call it my Proselytizer Stick
I've been meaning to do something like a portable library myself. Your version of that sounds interesting.
Do you mind if I ask what the AFAQ is? A Google search didn't lead me to a concrete answer.
I'm referring to the Anarchist FAQ
There is a group read of it happening that I am just now realizing I was probably tagged on my db0 account, and I totally forgot about it!
Anyway, I think something with both non-fiction works and fiction with a specific lean would be neat. Everything from The Iron Heel to The Conquest of Bread, a bit of Civil Disobedience by Thoreau, etc.
So just for the record, I think this works quite nicely. Using foliate as the ebook reader, mx linux on the stick, its pretty responsive. I think I can trim it down further (maybe I'll go full custom build if I have the time), but its pretty good to go right now.
One thing I was thinking about doing, since its OPDS friendly, is setting up a custom catalog to be available publicly that it can access, for ease of adding new books. I'm also going to grab and load a bunch locally, I have some on my library server right now, but I'll probably focus and expand the collection a bit for this.
Maybe something with sections for economics, the environment, anti-imperialism, social progressivism, etc.
I also really like the idea of incorporating some of the piefed rational discourse kit (maybe including some videos in a different section, or links to a wiki? Not sure yet.).
Well that part it looks like will be a project unto itself, but either way - the anti-fascist proselytizer stick has a start!

Nah, they can definitely do a decent display, I've had a desktop running a stupidly fat web app (not mine) on those with 1440p at 60hz. And that stupid thing needed windows, which was even worse. Trying to do a second thing with windows + that stupid app? Waste of time, not going to happen, but the main app ran just fine as bloat on top of bloat.
But light desktop stuff they can do just fine, however that isn't what I want. A few ideas from the original:
- Portable library (definitely going to happen, I'm installing now and going to build Bookworm on it)
- Portable (not mobile) emulation station, may happen, toss some NES and Genesis games on it. May try that out tonight after the library build.
- (not from the other thread) Portable kid distraction (basically boot to gcompris) - maybe, I'll have to see how well that works. Should only need opengl 2.1, but I think that chip supports 4.something, so should be good.

I am actually quite impressed with mxlinux on there!
Edit: Oh, for the record the little hdmi extension cable (~6" or so) is super handy and what he was missing when he had it plugged into the back of that monitor. I might stick it into a video switch though.
I just bought one to use as a Magic Mirror dashboard. I can't think of any other real use for them other than as dashboards.
I like the Volumio idea though. You can set up a Music Assistant container and get a whole home audio setup without having to run a bunch of speaker wire. At my old place I had an Apple TV airplay movie audio into the kitchen so you wouldn't miss any dialogue while you ran into the kitchen.
Edit: Really specific hypothetical. If they're powerful enough to run Kodi, and you have a travel homelab with Jellyfin/Plex, I wonder if they could serve as a travel streaming stick 🤔
I wonder if they could serve as a travel streaming stick 🤔
Good question.... They really aren't bad at all when it comes to simple video playback.... Worth trying on one of them at least!
Retro gaming I think is going to be good for one, cluster-wise I'd be better off with the old pi 3bs I have... somewhere.... I think in with the microcontroller bin (amidst of a pile of esp32s).
I've got a USB gamepad I picked up when radio shack was closing its stores, I think thats with the old consoles though (everything going back to n64, my NES, Genesis, and PS1 are long gone unfortunately), which is at my BIL's house as he is playing my old Wii and PS2. Which is now making me want to take the of Xbox shell and shove a PC in there for the living room, a good excuse to upgrade the living room PC... But a whole new project at the same time lol

But as OP said, they are really, emphatically, antifa-level before antifa was cool, no-nazi.
I recommend reading their "Frequently Questioned Answers" document, aka Dash1.

I've read a lot of tech docs through the years. Hands down, this is my favorite.
I do not recommend installing their OS, unless you have time to kill and curiosity.
9front is completely useless. It's a programmer's toy; a sandbox to develop some OS build ideas.

in reply to Severus_Snape • • •Apparently the fundamental problem, is that it isn't Boeing, except on paper, anymore:
It's McDonnell Douglas.
The engineering-culture of Boeing, was displaced when they merged,
& McDonnell Douglas's beancounter-culture did a "reverse takover"
( same as the confederates have now done a reverse-takeover of the US of A, & people are still pretending it's the US of A, instead of accepting that it's just the confederates ruling the "legal" US of A, but the "United States of America" is now functionally-gone, & that transformation's still accelerating, less-than 1/4 of the way through Trump's converting it into his possession. )
..so therefore "Boeing" is a dishonest/phony label on the company, now.
It's the McDonnell Douglas Dreamliner. The McDonnell Douglas 737-Max, etc.
Once the honest label gets put on it, then our unconscious-mind stops holding-onto contradicting-the-evidence assumptions/beliefs/habits!
Boeing didn't work the way McDonnell Douglas does.
& from what I've read, the "new CEO" is every bit as much anti-engineering-culture/pro-beancounter-culture as the guy he replaced, so therefore there is ZERO probability that anything fundamentally/really is going to change in that company.
Bottom-line-centrism ISN'T engineering-excellence-centrism!
They are different motivations.
They are different orientations.
They are different religions.
The longer people keep pretending that Boeing-culture's still existing in that company, the more people are going to die before we "wrap our heads around" the actual-facts.
sigh
This proves that companies can't be trusted to say what they are, but that regulators have to both periodically AND event-driven TEST what their culture is,
in order to discover when a company has kept the same name, but it isn't the same company .. and when that is discovered-to-be-the-case, then the regulators have to restart all certifications, because the "established relationship" was eliminated by the company which did a culture-change, while dishonestly keeping the old brand-name.
Why the hell does machiavellianism have to make EVERY-fscking-thing be too-damn-malevolent??
Humbug.
