Is there any incompatibility between NodeBB and Mobilizon?
Good evening everyone.
Mobilizon is an interesting alternative to EventBrite developed by the French collective Framasoft.
I recently noticed that NodeBB can't see #Mobilizon events.
Of course, I didn't expect NodeBB to be able to see and manage events (mark them as accepted, rejected, or "unclear"), like Friendica, for example.
Mastodon, however, while it can't "manage" events, can view them and allows you to follow the users who publish them.
I've noticed that NodeBB can't see Friendica events either, nor those produced by the federated platform "Gancio."
Can anyone explain to me what could be causing this incompatibility? Is it a "protection" feature of NodeBB, or a problem with the format in which #ActivityPub events are published?
Have a good evening, and thanks in advance.

Plans to capture CO2 from coal plants wasted federal dollars, watchdog says
The Department of Energy has spent $1.1 billion on plans to capture carbon dioxide emissions from coal power plants. Most of them never got off the ground.Justine Calma (The Verge)
Carbon dioxide from Google’s power plant will be injected into the same geological storage formations already used by ADM’s ethanol facility. The site is the location of the first long-term CO2 storage well in the U.S.Typically, around 2,000 metric tons of CO2 are sent into the well every day. But injections there were halted in 2024 when salty brine, which stores dissolved CO2 deep underground, was found to have migrated into “unauthorized zones,” according to the EPA. ADM said the leak was the result of corrosion at a monitoring well, E&E News reported, and they’ve since resumed injections.
A recent study of 13 CCS facilities representing 55% of all captured carbon shows that most aren’t living up to expectations.

Why some populist supporters want a strong-arm leader and others just want change

Excerpt:
The rise of populist leaders has drawn significant attention over the past two decades. Around the world, they have reshaped politics, from Donald Trump in the United States to Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Marine Le Pen in France, Giorgia Meloni in Italy, Santiago Abascal in Spain and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil. These leaders often rise to power by promising to speak for “the people” against the established “corrupt elites.” But our recent research shows that not all populist voters want the same things.
Our study examined public opinion data from nine countries to better understand what drives support for “strongman” populist leaders. The findings reveal that there are two very different kinds of populist attitudes, and the authoritarian variety most strongly predicts whether people will support a leader who is willing to bend the rules.
The article is short, and worth a read if you are curious about the results of the study or which country fell into which category. I started copying in more excerpts into this post and ended up copying 90% of the article.

Oversight Democrats’ Statement on New Tool to Document ICE Misconduct Across the Country as 170 American Citizens Illegally Detained by DHS
Today, a spokesperson for Oversight Democrats released the following statement on their investigation into the Department of Homeland Security after reports that at least 170 U.S. citizens have been unlawfully detained by the agency.
“Oversight Democrats have launched an investigation into the unlawful detention of American citizens by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.
We’re establishing a misconduct tracker to systematically document abuse and civil rights violations by this administration — including cases where ICE has detained U.S. citizens and violated federal law. The tracker documents unconstitutional actions after they occur — it is not a live location tool. Creating this kind of investigatory record is routine and essential in any oversight inquiry.
We’re not tracking officers’ locations or putting anyone at risk. We’re publishing records to expose patterns of misconduct and to build a transparent public record for the American people. Our work will always protect the public, law enforcement, and the Constitution,” said Sara Guerrero, spokesperson for Oversight Democrats

Two federal judges say use of AI led to errors in US court rulings
Two federal judges admitted in response to an inquiry by U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley that members of their staff used artificial intelligence to help prepare recent court orders that Grassley called "error-ridden."
In letters released by Grassley's office on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate in Mississippi and U.S. District Judge Julien Xavier Neals in New Jersey said the decisions in the unrelated cases did not go through their chambers' typical review processes before they were issued.

Federal appellate court pauses Alligator Alcatraz lawsuit

The movant is DIRECTED to promptly file a notice with the Court when the purpose for the stay is obviated,” the appellate court decision stated without any further explanation.
Retina e-paper promises screens 'visually indistinguishable from reality'
While most video screens such as those on our phones, TVs, and stadium jumbotrons seem to improve in resolution on a monthly basis, there has been an issue in improving the resolution of the tiny screens required in virtual reality apps. The problem is that as the screen moves closer to the human eye, the pixels that comprise it need to get smaller and smaller. Yet, if pixels get too small, their function starts to degrade and the image suffers. On a micro-LED screen, for example, pixels can't get much smaller than one micrometer wide before losing their ability to render a clear, crisp image. So instead of relying on pixels, researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University in Sweden turned to a different technique. They created what they've termed "metapixels" out of tungsten oxide, a material that can switch from being an insulator to a metal based on its electrical state. The metapixels reflect light differently based on their size and how they're arranged, and can be manipulated by an electrical current. In a way, they function much like the pigments in bird's feathers, which can take on different colors based on how the light is hitting them.
The fact that metapixels don't need a light source eliminates the problems that video pixels take on when they get too small such as color bleeding and issues with uniformity.

Top US prosecutor’s use of text message auto-delete could be illegal, watchdog groups warn
“The story about US attorney Lindsey Halligan’s use of Signal is deeply troubling. That she used the app apparently to discuss government business with a reporter, and configured her messages to disappear after eight hours, raises serious concerns that she is actively violating the Federal Records Act and the justice department’s own records-retention rules,” said Chioma Chukwu, executive director of American Oversight, a non-profit that frequently files lawsuits under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain federal records. The group submitted a public records request for Halligan’s Signal messages on Thursday.
“Even if portions of the conversation might contain information not typically subject to immediate public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act, federal law still requires that such records be preserved for specified periods. Setting such communications to automatically delete is not only inconsistent with those obligations but patently unlawful,” she said. “If Halligan failed to ensure these Signal messages were preserved, her actions may have violated federal law and warrant investigation or corrective action by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Acting Archivist Marco Rubio.”

in reply to julian • • •Re: Is there any incompatibility between NodeBB and Mobilizon?
Thanks for your reply, julian
For what it's worth, I agree with this approach.
Mobilizon events are certainly one of the most interesting implementations of the Fediverse and are extremely important for offering a user experience that can do without Facebook, just as the evolution of federated NodeBB represents a significant step forward in creating an alternative to Facebook groups (we're trying to do this in Italy with citiverse.it...).
However, some of Mobilizon's limitations (Mobilizon events are one-way: they're visible from the Fediverse and can even be managed with Friendica, but—for example—it's not yet possible to create a Mobilizon event from Friendica) and the critical issues in managing events for "generalist" platforms (I recall the problems, later resolved, that Friendica had with uncontrolled event sharing: all it took was for an account to follow an event account and all its followers would find it in their calendars... :confounded: ) make it appropriate to think very carefully and cautiously about the integration roadmap.
For the rest, thank you for your promptness and willingness to respond to users who ask for clarification!
Best regards,
Francesco
