Doesn't that mean even more agents will know what websites you visit?
in reply to NKBTN

Yes and no since it's gonna be data pollution
in reply to anon5621

Definitely sends false info as to what kind of products you might like to buy, and maybe what kind of products are worth advertising on the sites you visit, but personally I'd rather send the message "I'm not at all interested, ignore me"
in reply to NKBTN

That doesn't make much sense for me,cause modern ads on website for it's literally information violence and that so make ads idea useless for marketers

Where do you get your source of tech news that aren't the same BS about Apple, Facebook, Nintendo, Google, phones?

Whenever I go to a tech news site, it's mostly the same topics about the latest phone, the latest watch, or Nintendo/Playstation/Xbox. Or doom-and-gloom about privacy laws.

Don't get me wrong. I like to stay on top of things, sure.

But sometimes I want to read about, I don't know, advancements in eInk paper, DIY gadgets, transmitting data using non-conventional media (e.g. FM radio), odd games (e.g. that you can play with one hand, with your phone), coding fun things in some esoteric language, or good news like schools benefiting from tech donations.

Not necessarily those topics, but do you see how none of them are about Apple, Google, Amazon, AWS, iPhones, Android, Elon Musk (shudders), Pokemon, stocks, or Comcast screwing us all?

What websites do you visit for that kind of content? Thanks!

Ripperotti rest in spaccotti.

The Beautiful Dissociation of the Japanese Language

This article was making the rounds last year, but I don't think I've seen it posted here - and it seems like a good fit.

It talks about how disconnected the Japanese writing and speaking systems can be, and how that can create some affordances. I found it interesting, at least.

Interesting, but doesn’t motivate me to want to learn further lol. It basically told me you can convey much less meaning by speaking than writing, but writing is very difficult to learn.

Senators unveil bill to claw back power over tariffs amid Trump trade wars

Summary

Senators Chuck Grassley and Maria Cantwell introduced the bipartisan Trade Review Act of 2025 to reassert Congress’s authority over tariffs, following Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff announcements.

The bill would require the president to justify new tariffs and submit an economic impact analysis. Congress must approve tariffs within 60 days or they expire; it could also revoke them anytime.

Grassley’s support signals growing Republican concern over Trump’s trade policies.

The bill echoes the War Powers Act, underscoring fears that unchecked trade actions harm U.S. allies, exports, and consumers.

Imparare a fare scelte consapevoli

Gestire i conflitti familiari

Affrontare difficoltà legate a relazioni professionali

Gestione dello stress e resilienza

[Part 1] The journey of Mara Peridot

Even being unexpectedly awoken so much earlier than the start of her normal shift, Mara Peridot retained her trademark cheer as she made her way to the upper floor of the Vault where everyone was being assembled. Weaving through the assembly of people, she tried to make small talk with one of the computationists who happened to be just ahead of her, but he drearily waved her away while sucking a wakeup paste from a small pouch. Oh well, surely this call by the Overseer was something momentous. She sidled into the large room, the available chairs long since gone, and stood near the wall. She could just see the Overseer just over the heads of some of her taller fellow dwellers. He was a stocky older man, with grey hair and a square face. She had only ever talked with him a few times, normally when he had come into the hydroponics garden to discuss some matter with the more senior biological technicians, but she still fondly remembered when he had stopped on the way out to compliment her agrobacterium-mediated recombination work.

"Ah, you're here, good..." His voice cut short her reminiscing and cut quiet the murmurs that had been in the room. He continued now, with all assembled giving him their full attention.

"Well, only good that you're here. We've got a problem. A big one. The controller chip for our water purification system has given up the ghost. We can't make another one and the process is too complicated for a work-around system. Simply put, we're running out of drinking water. No water, no Vault."

Some gasps and stares that were somehow louder followed his pronouncement. Mara's heart jumped. Surely he was going to explain how this was all going to be fixed in short order. She involuntarily dug her nails against the Vault's wall.

"We are going to do something we've never done before. One of you is going to leave the Vault and find a new water chip. I know, I know. This must come as a shock. We don't know what's out there. But this must be done for the good of the entire Vault."

He motioned to one of the security officers who had been waiting before continuing.

"To make this difficult decision fair, we have decided to leave it up to chance. Everyone who is within the appropriate age range, physical condition, and does not hold a critical position is going to draw straws. There are about two hundred of you, and whoever it is, know I have faith in your abilities. Let's begin."

Everyone was shocked, and the closest dwellers to the security officer seemed to pick their straws from his clutched hands in a daze. Eventually a more formal line begin to form. Vault dwellers were used to forming lines. In front of Mara was Albert Cole and she secretly hoped he would get the short straw. He was well liked in the Vault for his ability to get any two people to come to an agreement. He'd probably do fantastically in the out side, and Mara she'd heard him wishing for a chance to go up there anyways.

"Why straws fix Vault?"

Mara turned to look at the source of the deep, booming voice. It was poor, sweet Max. He was strong, but sometimes got a little turned around. She explained it was a contest and that was enough for Max.

The line got shorter and eventually Albert picked his straw. He whistled as he grabbed it, and with no hesitation examined it.

"Dang!" He exclaimed upon seeing it was full length.

Mara got up to the officer holding the straws and hovered her hand over one, but at the last moment darted away and picked another. Whew it was over. She was done and could could put this morning behind her. Just like Albert, she had a full le-

Oh. No.

No. No. No. No.

It was short. Tiny. No mistaking it. Absolutely not a full length straw.

She couldn't hear anything. Her vision hyperfocused on some random distant point in the room. She barely noticed as Max half caught her falling and guided her into one of the now vacant chairs.

US to warn Lebanon to get tougher on Hezbollah to unlock Gulf cash, sources say

US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus is expected to arrive in Beirut on Friday for meetings with Aoun and other Lebanese officials.

There, she will raise concerns that the Lebanese army is "backsliding" against disarming Hezbollah, one current US official and two former US and Arab officials told MEE.

But at the top of the Lebanese officials' agenda will be asking the US why reconstruction funding from Saudi Arabia that was promised earlier this year has not materialised.

MEE revealed in January that the US dangled the promise of Saudi cash to Lebanese lawmakers to ensure Aoun, Lebanon’s former commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, was elected president. Since then, Saudi Arabia has brushed off Lebanon’s appeals for cash.

Germany is now deporting pro-Palestine EU citizens. This is a chilling new step

A crackdown on political dissent is well under way in Germany. Over the past two years, institutions and authorities have cancelled events, exhibitions and awards over statements about Palestine or Israel.

There are many examples: the Frankfurt book fair indefinitely postponing an award ceremony for Adania Shibli; the Heinrich Böll Foundation withdrawing the Hannah Arendt prize from Masha Gessen; the No Other Land directors Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham being defamed by German ministers. And, most recently, the philosopher Omri Boehm being disinvited from speaking at this month’s anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald.

In nearly all of these cases, accusations of antisemitism loom large – even though Jews are often among those being targeted. More often than not, it is liberals driving or tacitly accepting these cancellations, while conservatives and the far right lean back and cheer them on.

Germany has recently taken a chilling new step, signalling its willingness to use political views as grounds to curb migration. Authorities are now moving to deport foreign nationals for participating in pro-Palestine actions. As I reported this week in the Intercept, four people in Berlin – three EU citizens and one US citizen – are set to be deported over their involvement in demonstrations against Israel’s war on Gaza. None of the four have been convicted of a crime, and yet the authorities are seeking to simply throw them out of the country.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Literally Jews pushing the German government that is centre-Left to help them call other Jews anti-semetic. As it pushes for Germany to continue sending weapons and money to kill Palestinians.

Legal experts told me that invoking Staatsräson in deportation proceedings is legally dubious. A recent parliamentary review reached a similar conclusion, noting that Staatsräson – often cited to justify Germany’s foreign policy toward Israel, including the plan of the incoming chancellor, Friedrich Merz, to invite Benjamin Netanyahu despite an active international criminal court arrest warrant – carries no legally enforceable weight.

theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Abraham said he had planned to return to Israel the day after the closing ceremony, but that he changed his plans during a stop-off in Greece, when he learned that Israeli media outlets were describing his speech as antisemitic, with some citing German officials.

As well as receiving death threats on social media, Abraham said several individuals turned up at his family members’ home in Israel, causing them to vacate the premises out of fear for their safety.

Greece’s Aegean islands reel from ‘lake of mud’ flash floods before Easter rush

People on the Aegean islands, more used in April to the sight and scent of spring’s blossoms, have been left reeling from flash floods spurred by typhoon-strength gales, with authorities calling a state of emergency in some of Greece’s most popular destinations less than three weeks before Easter.

“It’s a total catastrophe and it happened in just two hours,” said Costas Bizas, the mayor of Paros, the island worst hit by weather not seen in decades. “We need all the help we can get.”

On Paros and Mykonos, two of the country’s most visited islands, officials were racing against the clock to complete clean-up operations before the arrival of tourists for the Easter break.

Israel got warned by Egypt three days in advance so it impossible to suggest they did not know.

Whether they knew the resistance was counterattacking does not make the resistance self-defense any less justified nor Israeli crimes any better.

Ouster of top FDA vaccine official prompts concern from lawmakers, scientists

A Washington Post report on March 28 that the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) forced the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) top vaccine official—Peter Marks, MD—to resign or be fired quickly caught the attention of some lawmakers, along with members of the scientific and business communities.

Marks submitted his resignation letter, with an effective date of April 5. The development comes amid a major change in focus under the leadership of new HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a long-time vaccine skeptic, which the agency spelled out in a March 27 announcement.

Marks: Kennedy wants support for misinformation, lies

Marks is a hematologist oncologist who has led the FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) since 2016 after serving as its deputy director since 2012. He has widely been credited as playing a key role in Operation Warp Speed, a partnership between the federal government and the private sector that streamlined the development, production, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine.

In his resignation letter, published by the Post and other media outlets, Marks raised concerns about efforts to undermine confidence in vaccines, especially against the backdrop of a multistate measles outbreak that is especially severe in Texas. Marks said he was willing to work with Kennedy to address his concerns over vaccine safety and transparency. Kennedy has minimized the outbreak and has suggested alternative treatments, including vitamin A, which some hospital officials said has been linked to cases of liver problems.

in reply to TacoButtPlug

The whole point of the anti-vaccine movement is gaining religious exemptions. They don't actually care about the vaccines. They want to say that the government can't tell me what to do. That or they're going to poison vaccines in order to kill liberals.
in reply to GrumpyDuckling

You also have a FDA head that generates income from bad vaccine science/lawsuits. It's open season grifting.

Yikes. I hate* how that last part is plausible.

Irish regulator set to fine TikTok €500m for EU data sent to China

TikTok owner ByteDance is set to be hit by a privacy fine of more than €500 million for illegally shipping European users’ data to China, adding to the growing global backlash over the video-sharing app.

Ireland’s data protection commission, the company’s main regulator in Europe, will issue the penalty against TikTok before the end of the month, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move comes after a lengthy investigation found the Chinese business fell foul of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation in sending the information to China to be accessed by engineers, added the people, who spoke under condition of anonymity.

As part of the decision from Ireland’s data protection commission, the regulator will order TikTok to suspend the unlawful data processing in China within a set time frame. China has long provoked the ire of privacy activists, who claim that the nation’s mass surveillance regime violates fundamental rights.

TikTok has been in the crosshairs of the Irish data protection commission before. In September 2023, it was fined €345 million for alleged lapses in the way it cares for children’s personal data. The watchdog has also sounded the alarm over Big Tech firms shipping the personal data of European citizens outside of the 27-member bloc, slapping a record €1.2 billion fine against Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc. for failing to protect personal information from the American security services.

The Irish probe into TikTok started in 2021, when the regulator’s then head Helen Dixon claimed that EU user data could be accessed by “maintenance and AI engineers in China.”

Joan Didion’s Notes on Therapy

Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne met in the late fifties, when she was working at Vogue and he at Time. They married in 1964, and in 1966 they adopted a baby girl, giving her a name from the Yucatán: Quintana Roo. Together, Didion and Dunne lived out one of the most collaborative literary marriages in American history. Last week, after two years of preparation, the New York Public Library opened the Didion-Dunne archive to the public. Among its three hundred and thirty-six boxes of material is a thick file of typewritten notes by Didion describing her sessions with the psychiatrist Roger MacKinnon, beginning in 1999. Addressed to Dunne, the entries are full of direct quotations and written with the immediacy of fresh recollection. Didion was concerned about Quintana and her struggles with depression and alcoholism, but she was preoccupied, too, with aging, with creative fulfillment, with the complex dynamics of their family. She recorded her thoughts with the cool, forensic clarity she was known for.

Mounting calls to free Niger’s deposed president

Niger’s democratically elected former President Mohamed Bazoum and his wife Hadiza have spent more than 20 months in detention by a military that seized power in 2023 and this week cemented its grip on the country.

A former high school philosophy teacher who went on to become Niger’s interior minister, Bazoum represented a break with the past: His presidential inauguration in 2021 was hailed as the first peaceful democratic transition in the West African nation since it gained independence from France in 1960.

But he was ousted only two years later as Niger followed in the footsteps of neighboring Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso in returning to military rule. On Wednesday, coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani was sworn in as Niger’s president for a “transitional” five years.

His shithole country losing all over the world and seething about it, hahahahaaaaa
Him and his little propaganda post about a country he couldn't find on a map and doesn't know anything about, like most of the ignorant US morons.
I'm from western Europe you idiot, far superior and educated.
Glad we can dump your banana republic.
Now go cry somewhere else, no need for your moronic american neanderthal level remarks.
Get back to your trailer and your meth and go jerk off to your stars and stripes rag you all love so much or whatever it is you do there.
in reply to Bloomcole

Here's the sad part of this whole exchange. I'm over here, a random cunt using the last dying breaths of my shithole country's freedom to criticise my piece of shit government, while noting there are, in fact, other piece of shit governments too.

Meanwhile, you're out there being an absolutely spineless and convictionless arselicker; doing all you can to please the portrait of whatever whack dictator you have hanging on your sucio walls and you're all pissed off because someone that's clearly not you, has the fucking audacity to not be a spineless dictator groveling crotch pheasant.

Yea, I might be somewhere that sucks and has trash elites but so do you.

The difference between you and I is, I have a day job that's not being an autocrat's bitch online and am willing to see the wrongs of my people and call for change. Meanwhile, here you are... jUsT fOlLoWiNg OrDeRs to defend autocracy on every social media you're assigned to - and are angry someone out there isn't cowering like you.

You could be working towards your and your people's own freedom to criticize own dickhole leaders but instead, here you are... proving your pathetic allegiance to an effort towards the world's enslavement.

Bravo clownrade. 🤡

in reply to TacoButtPlug

the sad part for you is that you for some reason think I am Russian.
I am a much more advanced and civilised educated knowledgeable European that understands geopolitics at a level you can never achieve.
You make ridiculous assumptions fueled by your propaganda not even close to reality.
It is sad that you can't even understand most of the world doesn't like the US shithole.
My 'leaders' as you call them are sell-out US bootlickers, the people however think differently.
You cant even grasp the beginning of the spectrum that is out there.
A good thing actually, it's best the enemy is completely ignorant. Couldn't hope for more.
The fact you think I am paid to ridicule your awful cancer country says a lot more about you than me.
And it's been a constant here. None of you clowns have even the least knowledge of the world.
All the more reason you will lose, whatever you try.
Fascist lose in the end.
in reply to Bloomcole

You called yourself Russian above, Borat. Lol! Fucking halfwit. You write like your mom drank too much while you were in the womb. You read like a cishet white dude who mentally never figured out how to articulate above the 10th grade*.
Defo, you wouldn't know wtf intelligence was if it bit you in the clown ass. If you're not being paid to be a coward and you're just this complete spineless twat on lemmy for nothing... lmfao that proves the point.

So mentally fucked up on your glue fumes you're calling yourself Russo in one breath, forgetting you did that and whining about it, and then vomiting out autocrat talking points like a Trump/Biden/Putin/Duterte/Bukele loving bitch. Then getting confused wtf fascism even is.

No one is this fucking stupid. If you're not getting paid to be this shitty of a troll, you should consider it.

You're insande, drunk or simply american dumb.
You must've done too much meth in your trailer/car/tent or wherever you cockroaches live.
It really brings me so much joy your dimwit president (a perfect US representative) is accelerating the demise of your shithole.
All of you clowns crying online and having total meltdowns LOL
Enjoy the sanctions, luckily all you vulgar corn syrup filled peasants have enough fat to last a few months but it's not going to go well for you scum.
And nobody in the world will care.
Bye POS. Enjoy your food stamps 😂
in reply to Bloomcole

Donde es insande? Is that a glue name you don't like? Lol estupida cabron.

Anyway. I guess you would know what too much meth looks like. Though, judging from our boring ass exchange here and how much you're DRAMATICALLY lacking, meth and trailers might be too rich for you at this time. Sorry about your luck, Borat. I can't relate.

Not sure why you're being a cunt about people's housing and inability to buy food, btw. Trailers and food stamps is an insult to you? Still can't relate. Just dumb right wing cunt things? Definitely FOX news, IRA, and Hasbara talking points. Again, if you're not getting paid by one of them you are truly an idiot. Lol

I'm glad you enjoy watching people suffer. You've made that crystal clear in every exchange, bud. Probably due to the fetal alcohol syndrome in your frontal lobe. Sad, really. But, cheer up fashy. It makes you an excellent candidate for your daddy Trump's cabinet selects. You should tweet him or something. I bet he'd make you director of meth and glue huffing. Right up there with RFK. You'd finally have an actual purpose in your sad little life.

in reply to TacoButtPlug

I'm from Belgium, unlike your pathetic country it's not a junkie and homeless infested shithole, I have never encountered a meth addict in my life.
I only see them in videos from the US.
And now you, the Russophobic US regime propaganda posting racist cunt wants to pretend to have the high grond? LOL.
Get fucked
in reply to Bloomcole

I honestly don't care where you're from, Borat. But I'd be willing to put cash down you aren't a lick of what you claim on lemmy. So whatever. One thing is defo clear. You aren't sober and you your mom drank A LOT when she had you in womb. To bad so sad. Anyway.
in reply to TacoButtPlug

You're repeating your same lame attempts at insults

t I’d be willing to put cash down you aren’t a lick of what you claim on lemmy
I bet you don't have cash since you're from the US shithole.
Also it doesn't matter what you think does it?
Nobody listens to dumb americunts.
Like your fat mom didn't listen when they told her she shouldn't fuck a monkey and got you.
in reply to Bloomcole

Who are you quoting? lmao.

Are you getting railed by another person on lemmy also? I wouldn't be shocked. You do suck.

in reply to TacoButtPlug

How's it going now with your downvotes?
-4 LOL
I guess people see through your US fascist regime propaganda.
And what a vulgar and vile hate filled POS you must be to write such deranged comments.
in reply to Bloomcole

Lol. Oh you mad. And all because you can't read. Your parents really hooked you up in the life success department.

in reply to Libb

I would support them coming back in the Union

Same, as long as there are exactly zero exceptions for them this time. And they must adopt the Euro from day one.

in reply to Mike

I think EXACTLY as Pirata.
Welcome back, but this time no silly opt-outs.
