Oggi, la mia pausa pranzo era di un’ora… e, forse perché non avevo nulla di sufficientemente interessante per distrarmi nel mentre, ma ho finito fin troppo subito il mio solito pranzo misero che nemmeno i carcerati; e, sicuramente complice la droga che prendo per evitare gli starnuti, avevo quella strana situazione instabile di abbiocco post-pranzo pur avendo ancora fame… Quindi, visto che non sapevo in che altro modo perdere 45 minuti, dopo averne spesi già i primi 40 a girare, ho semplicemente preso un (1) caffè, così durante la lezione assonnante sono potuta rimanere sveglia a distrarmi, anziché finire per distrarmi tramite zzz. 😇A parte l’aver notato anche oggi che i pavimenti erano pieni di nuove macchie marroni, ma proprio spiattellate a profusione (anche in punti molto distanti da qualsiasi macchinetta del caffè, ma come cazzo è possibile…), che non capisco come faccia la gente a menarsi così tanto p’ cuoll la bevanda… vedo che ancora non hanno aggiustato questo povero distributore, che sicuramente ha visto tempi migliori. (L’ho notato per la prima volta la settimana scorsa, ma chissà da quanto è così.)
Di marca Sigma ma, rispetto agli altri vicini e non, è veramente il peggio virgin. Che stracavolo è successo al display??? Perché sfarfalla in questo modo? E in video si nota, ma mai quanto stare lì di persona: se l’area è abbastanza al buio, magari perché il cielo è abbastanza nuvoloso, il #flickering continuo della luce che si riflette sul pavimento e nell’ambiente si avverte pure stando di spalle, o andandoci incontro da lontano. A funzionare funziona, e ok, ma non andrebbe comunque riparata, tipo? Questions about an existing SIM card in GrapheneOS
Hi all!
Newbie here on a privacy journey. My current objective is to create a cute little phone that limits tracking by surveillance capitalists, law enforcement, & the state.
That said, the stakes are not particularly high here. I just miss the world I grew up in & find the call of freedom enticing. So this is more of a hobby project for me to be able to put my main phone down and experience a world without tracking again.
So far I have installed GrapheneOS on my old phone. I'm absolutely in love with it and I'm 100% sold on one day even migrating my main phone to it. But thats not my main concern today.
For now, I have some questions related to SIM cards.
I understand that in order to avoid device number leaks (if that's something one cares about) it's important to not have a SIM card in the device and keep it on airplane mode.
However, years before privacy ever mattered to me I already had a SIM card and two eSIMs in this phone. And all of the advice I read talks about NEVER putting a SIM card in, but I have a hard time thinking critically about what that really means for those of us who ALREADY had one in.
If I remove that SIM card and eSIM and carry on using the phone, what are the privacy implications of such a choice?
Likewise, if I leave the SIM cards in but keep the phone on airplane mode is it really all that bad?
I assume at minimum this means that the IMEI number is stored somewhere in some cell tower logs. If the state were to seize my phone they could I suppose link the phone to things I did with my phone or accounts I used back before privacy mattered to me.
But are there other implications as well? Is this phone forever going to leak a connection to my old activity even if I remove the SIM cards, leave it on airplane mode, use a VPN and ensure it never falls into bad hands?

They say they're planning to make a 1W version, which I assume will be either be much larger or have a much shorter lifespan. How does it work? Does it have a way to stop the reaction or does the 1W battery generate 1W of heat when there's no load attached?

Before you downvote this post, the title is in fact the title of the Youtube video verbatim.
The man has an interesting theory for why Trump is creating this much chaos and disruption. It even kind of makes sense.
TL;DR: Trump - or rather, his Heritage Foundation handlers, Trump is much too dumb to come up with this on his own - wants to blow up the neoliberal view of the world and come back to a sort of Bretton-Woods world without the gold standard.
If that's the long-term plan, I might almost understand it, were it not for one critical factor: all this assumes that the ultimate bargaining power for the US is access to the US market - which currently is the largest in the world. But this assumes the cretinous tariffs don't kill it completely by creating another great depression - and that's a big assumption.
Anyhow, worth a watch.

The study looked at health and wealth data of more than 73,000 adults across the US and Europe who were 50 to 85 years old in 2010. There were more than 19,000 from the US, nearly 27,000 from Northern and Western Europe, nearly 19,000 from Eastern Europe, and nearly 9,000 from Southern Europe. For each region, participants were divided into wealth quartiles, with the first being the poorest and the fourth being the richest. The researchers then followed participants until 2022, tracking deaths.
While less access to health care and weaker social structures can explain the gap between the wealthy and poor in the US, it doesn't explain the differences between the wealthy in the US and the wealthy in Europe, the researchers note. There may be other systemic factors at play that make Americans uniquely short-lived, such as diet, environment, behaviors, and cultural and social differences.
"If we want to improve health in the US, we need to better understand the underlying factors that contribute to these differences—particularly amongst similar socioeconomic groups—and why they translate to different health outcomes across nations," Papanicolas said.

I want to escape Microsoft and windows, and I am looking for a Linux distro. I have some experience with Unix and a very old Ubuntu distro. But that's quite some years ago. I am looking for a Linux distribution where i can play World of Warcraft on. I mainly use Nvidia graphics (RTX 3070).
I have found some distributions that are supposed to be good for gaming. I suppose, as i am still a Linux Noob, I am also looking for a distribution which is easy to get into. Especially for an older gamer ;)

I personally wouldn’t look for a distro made just for gaming. I’m currently using Fedora 41 on my PCs and I’ve just closed Red Dead Redemption 2 a few minutes ago, also played baldurs gate and resident evil 4.
Fedora works great for me using it for everything

There are certainly a lot of valid similarities to Russia and Israel, but I think Israel is more genocidal than Russia.

War crimes do help to reduce suffering, even if some countries blatently abuse it.
There's a warrant out for the arrest of Bibi for his war crimes. Duterte just got arrested and shipped to The Hague for his war crimes.
Laws dont exist to eliminate crimes from happening. But they do reduce the number of victims.

My name is Ibtihal, and for the past 3.5 years, I’ve been a software engineer on Microsoft’s AI Platform org. I spoke up today because after learning that my org was powering the genocide of my people in Palestine, I saw no other moral choice. This is especially true when I’ve witnessed how Microsoft has tried to quell and suppress any dissent from my coworkers who tried to raise this issue. For the past year and a half, our Arab, Palestinian, and Muslim community at Microsoft has been silenced, intimidated, harassed, and doxxed, with impunity from Microsoft. Attempts at speaking up at best fell on deaf ears, and at worst, led to the firing of two employees for simply holding a vigil. There was simply no other way to make our voices heard.
We are witnessing a genocide
For the past 1.5 years, I’ve witnessed the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people by Israel. I’ve seen unspeakable suffering amidst Israel’s mass human rights violations - indiscriminate carpet bombings, the targeting of hospitals and schools, and the continuation of an apartheid state - all of which have been condemned globally by the UN, ICC, and ICJ, and numerous human rights organizations. The images of innocent children covered in ash and blood, the wails of mourning parents, and the destruction of entire families and communities have forever fractured me.
At the time of writing, Israel has resumed its full-scale genocide in Gaza, which has so far killed by some estimates over 300,000 Gazans in the past 1.5 year alone. Just days ago, it was revealed that Israel killed fifteen paramedics and rescue workers in Gaza, executing them “one by one,” before burying them in the sand -- yet another horrific war crime. All the while, our “responsible” AI work powers this surveillance and murder. The United Nations and the International Court of Justice have concluded that this is a genocide, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders.
We are Complicit
When I moved to AI Platform, I was excited to contribute to cutting-edge AI technology and its applications for the good of humanity: accessibility products, translation services, and tools to “empower every human and organization to achieve more.” I was not informed that Microsoft would sell my work to the Israeli military and government, with the purpose of spying on and murdering journalists, doctors, aid workers, and entire civilian families. If I knew my work on transcription scenarios would help spy on and transcribe phone calls to better target Palestinians (source), I would not have joined this organization and contributed to genocide. I did not sign up to write code that violates human rights.
According to AP news, there is “a $133 million contract between Microsoft and Israel’s Ministry of Defense.”
“The Israeli military’s usage of Microsoft and OpenAI artificial intelligence spiked last March to nearly 200 times higher than before the week leading up to the Oct. 7 attack. The amount of data it stored on Microsoft servers doubled between that time and July 2024 to more than 13.6 petabytes.”
“The Israeli military uses Microsoft Azure to compile information gathered through mass surveillance, which it transcribes and translates, including phone calls, texts and audio messages, according to an Israeli intelligence officer who works with the systems. That data can then be cross-checked with Israel’s in-house targeting systems.”
Microsoft AI also powers the most “sensitive and highly classified projects” for the Israeli military, including its “target bank” and the Palestinian population registry. Microsoft cloud and AI enabled the Israeli military to be more lethal and destructive in Gaza than they otherwise could.
Microsoft has also been providing software, cloud services, and consulting services to the Israeli military and government, totaling millions in profit. War Criminal Benjamin Netanyahu has explicitly mentioned his strong ties to Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft is so deeply connected to the Israeli military that it was just yesterday designated one of the priority boycott targets of the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanctions) campaign.
Regardless of your political stances, is this the legacy we want to leave behind? Is working on deadly AI weapons something you can tell your children about? Do we want to be on the wrong side of history?
Even though your work could be unrelated to the cloud that the military uses, your work benefits the company and allows it to take on the contract. Regardless of your team, you serve a company that is arming the Israeli occupation. It is undeniable that part of your compensation, no matter how small, is being paid by genocide.
Whether you work on AI or not, you will be complicit if you do nothing. It is now OUR job to take a vocal stand against Microsoft AI’s involvement in crimes against humanity.
This is why I decided to speak up today, and why I signed this important petition to demand Microsoft cut ties with genocide. And I urge you all to do the same.
Call to Action
Silence is complicity. But action always has a reaction, no matter how big or small. As workers for this company, we must make our voices heard, and demand that Microsoft does the right thing: stop selling technology to the Israeli military.
If you are also concerned about this news, and you also want your work to be used ethically, I urge you to take action:
Sign the No Azure for Apartheid petition: We will not write code that kills. And join the campaign to add your voice to the growing number of concerned Microsoft employees.
Join me in showing our discontent in this thread. If you also feel tricked into deploying weapons which target children and civilians, urge leadership (CC’ed) to drop these contracts.
Don’t stop speaking up. Urge SLT to drop these contracts at every opportunity.
Start conversations with your co-workers about the points above - so many employees may not know!

Our company has precedents in supporting human rights, including divestment from apartheid South Africa and dropping contracts with AnyVision (Israeli facial recognition startup), after Microsoft employee and community protests. Microsoft Cloud and AI should stop being the bombs and bullets of the 21st century.
