Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 6th April 2025
Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.
Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.
If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.
The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.
(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this. Also, happy April Fool's in advance.)

Used Camera Prices
Is it just me or have used camera prices gone up?
I just had a look on ebay at a camera I own and the price has doubled since I bought one used a couple of years ago and in some cases is actually more than what it was sold for when it was new in 2011...

It is time to heed the words of the man I began this whole thing with: John Lewis. I beg folks to take his example of his early days where he made himself determined to show his love for his country at a time the country didn't love him. To love this country so much, to be such a patriot that he endured beatings savagely on the Edmund Pettus bridge, at lunch counters, on Freedom Rides, he said he had to do something. He would not normalize a moment like this. He would not just go along with business as usual. He wouldn't know how to solve it but there's one thing that he would do that I hope we all can do, that I think I did a little bit of tonight. He said for us to go out and cause some good trouble. Necessary trouble to redeem the soul of our nation. I want you to redeem the dream. Let's be bold in America, not demean and degrade Americans. Not divide us against each other. […] This is a moral moment. It's not left or right, it's right or wrong. Let's get in good trouble.

Well, The America dollar could crash. That would make American products very cheap to buy with other currencies and make them an economical alternative despite of tariffs.
It would really hurt the average American though. Good for business owners/exports, bad for everyone else.

A Medium Corporation driver också Mastodoninstansen Medium (me.dm).
Kommersiella företag i dagens Fediversum
Sujitech LLC/The Social Coop Ltd/Mask Network driver instanserna mastodon.cloud, mstdn,jp och pawoo.net. US-amerikanska Fediverse Communications LLC driver mstdn.party, mstdn.plus, lemmy.one och pxfld.plus.
Vivaldi

What second hand laptop to buy
I would like to buy myself a second hand and install Linux on it. I was looking into ThinkPad T14 gen1 or gen2 devices because of their maintainability and repairability. I found one where I live with a Ryzen processor but it has the wrong keyboard. How easy and expensive would it be to swap this with US English? Are there any good alternatives to the ThinkPads? I fancy the X1 but don't like the fact that I cannot change or swap anything on it. The T14 looks very bulky and unattractive but at least can have the RAM upgraded and the battery changed.
I fancy the Framework laptops, but don't want to spend so much on a laptop. Especially the latest 16 inch with Ryzen AI CPUs.
The T14 G1 is at least cheap, like 350€ with the 400 nits low power display and the battery is at 99%. I guess with tlp installed and autocpugfreq I can get 5-6 hours out of it.
like this
Thinkpads are extremely well documented. For how to repair/replace parts, you need the HMM. Just Google for "Thinkpad t14 Gen 1 HMM" and you should find the official PDF on their site. That will tell you, step by step, how to replace the keyboard.
As for the part itself, you can again check Lenovo's site for all compatible parts (FRUs) and find the item number and details. While I wouldn't recommend buying directly from them due to cost, this should give you the information needed to find it elsewhere. eBay has tons of Thinkpads being sold for parts, and many of these will be parted out. You should have no issues finding what you're looking for.
but it has the wrong keyboard
you can also either manually reconfigure keys or just choose your habitual keyboard layout and ignore the markings (that's what i do. How often do you look at your keyboard anyway?)

Honda says its newest car factory in China needs 30% less staff thanks to AI & automation, and its staff of 800 can produce 5 times more cars than the global average for the automotive industry.
cross-posted from: futurology.today/post/4251786
Bringing manufacturing jobs home has been in the news lately, but it's not the 1950s or even the 1980s anymore. Today's factories need far less humans. Global car sales were 78,000,000 in 2024 and the global automotive workforce was 2,500,000. However, if the global workforce was as efficient as this Honda factory, it could build those cars with only 20% of that workforce. If something can be done for 20% of the cost, that is probably the direction of travel. Bear in mind too, factories will get even more automated and efficient than today's 2025 Honda factory.
It's not improbable within a few years we will have 100% robot-staffed factories that need no humans at all. Who'll have the money to buy all the cars they make is another question entirely.

Jerry Nadler on Trump’s university attacks: ‘He doesn’t give a damn about antisemitism’
Summary
Rep. Jerry Nadler accused Trump of exploiting antisemitism to justify political crackdowns on elite universities.
Nadler said Trump “doesn’t give a damn about antisemitism” and is weaponizing Jewish concerns to impose control over academia.
The administration has suspended or threatened over $10 billion in federal funding to schools like Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton.
Nadler warned that curbing campus free speech would harm Jews and condemned Trump for gutting civil rights enforcement. He also criticized universities for capitulating and urged legal resistance to what he called unconstitutional coercion.

In America the metro is seen as where there are lots of poor people and drug addicts and the rich people tend to prefer to buy fancy cars and drive them.
It’s kind of the same logic as to why america is one of the few countries where the poor people tend to live in the city center, but the rich people out in the suburbs.

Yeah European = Good is a lie.
But well, European = not financially contributing as much to Trump’s corpocratic neofacist ethnostate, so probably better if you were gonna buy the thing anyways.

House Republican plans bill to let Congress block Trump tariffs
Summary
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) plans to introduce a bill allowing Congress to block presidential tariffs, marking a rare GOP split with Trump amid market fallout.
His bill mirrors the Senate’s bipartisan Trade Review Act, requiring the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of new tariffs and gain approval within 60 days or face expiration.
With Trump able to veto and Republicans controlling Congress, passage is unlikely.
Meanwhile, House Democrats aim to force a vote ending Trump’s tariff-related national emergency, increasing pressure on vulnerable Republicans.
