I am sorry, but the image is from Iran's petrochemical plant fire a few years ago, there are no report of ID attacks against Abadan right now.

Abadan oil refinery, one of the largest refineries in Iran was attacked by Israeli forces today.

This is not a military target. It's a clear indication that Netanyahu is trying to cripple Iran's economy and bot just it's nuclear plants.

Limit new car dimensions by 2035: proposal from civil society to the EU

30 associations are proposing to the European Commission to impose a limit on the size of new cars, in particular the total width and bonnet.

A report connected with this request showed that the average bonnet height of newly-sold cars in Europe is increasing by 0.5 cm a year.

Many studies showed that bigger cars and higher bonnets are related to more collisions, and worse outcome for pedestrians and cyclists (and those in smaller cars), especially in regards to children

Those SUVs are kid crushers, they shouldn’ be on our roads

Slow down your love: this is just a proposal from a bunch of associations. On the other side there are car industry lobbies and their enormous profit margins, which are particularly strong. Let's see what happens
in reply to lgsp@feddit.it

Hm. Don't know.

This one?

Yeah, can be banned.

But this one?

Don't know. While it's a fair bit shorter than an f150, it's still a big-ass car. But is it an unethical car? It fits a lot of stuff or a lot of people or a fair amount of both, but I guess the same thing is true for the f150. Visibility is much better I guess, but would pick ups be more moral if they had a lower hood?

Like, yeah, I hate pick ups, too, but what's their defining aspect? What's the law that gets rid of large SUVs but keeps station wagons? Or is the law just going to get rid of all larger cars?

I'm not trying to argue against the idea of banning dick comparison cars, this is a genuine question.

some thoughts about your post

  • nobody would buy a van if not in need, because it's not cool, it costs more etc. So you would end up having less big vehicles on the road. There is no need to regulate too much something that is numerically not important
  • the hood height for the van is lower and visibility is better: you can find a lot of studies that connect the former with less killings and less serious injuries and the latter with less collisions, so definitely less dangerous
  • i actually think that if pickups had lower hoods, they would be more moral, yes, because they would be less dangerous. (see above)

Fair point. I agree.

I always assumed that the bonnet height was one of the reasons why you couldn't really drive one of those in Europe anyway. But if that's not the case then yes, adjusting that should be done.

(Also I drive a van and I think it's cool since obviously I'm cool and so my car kinda has to be, too, so I'm not sure if I agree with your first point.)

sorry, my mistakes. Vans can be absolutely cool. I think the electric one from VW is extremely cool. It's just not the kind of cool that people with fragile masculinity would desire

We've had station wagons for a very long time now. A big Ford Mondeo we had was a relatively low car, without an enormous bonnet.

Cars continue to get wider, longer and higher off the ground (there's this Kia that looks like you're driving around in a fridge), whilst the stuff we move within them isn't exactly increasing. it's just bigger for the sake of being bigger, and that's causing issues in the streets.

You are missing my point. To turn this into a law, there need to be clear rules of what is or isn't allowed.

The Kia you're talking about is this one I guess? The EV5?

Unfortunately, the size comparison site I used doesn't have that, but it is apparently similar to their "Sportage" SUV, so I took the long wheel base version of that one to compare it against your old Mondeo...

... which is longer than the SUV...

... and only 5cm less wide ...

whilst the stuff we move within them isn't exactly increasing

... and has much less cargo volume.

So, what kind of rules do you come up with to get rid of the one but not the other? Height? Then what about the vans? And how is height making a car more or less unethical?

So far, the 3.5 ton weight limit seems to have worked well for keeping the most ridiculous American cars off European streets. But it seems that's not enough, so what other rules could be used to define which cars shouldn't be allowed to drive around? It's obviously not weight because we already have that. It's apparently not the size because despite most arguments, SUVs aren't always much bigger than other cars that are usually perceived as fine. So what is it??

in reply to Asetru

Bonnet height, as the article suggests. Or do the responsible thing and measure front visibility, so you don't hit vans in the process.
in reply to real_squids

But isn't that already part of regulations 78/2009 and 2019/2144?

I mean, I'm all for it, but if it's just that it seems the goal is to get more detailed regulations for the bonnet then that's great, but I fail to see how that would get rid of SUVs or other larger cars.

Also don't misunderstand me there... Reducing bonnet height to protect pedestrians on impact is a good thing and should be done. I just don't think it'd reduce car weight or size, so if that's the goal then it won't help.

in reply to Asetru

EuroNCAP suggested to try to change something, apparently they are not catching in their test, but they acknowledge the issue

US immigration agency flies drones capable of surveillance over LA protests

CBP also said in a statement that its air and marine operations were “not engaged in the surveillance of first amendment activities”, but that they are “providing officer safety surveillance when requested by officers”.

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday posted a video on X that the agency said was DHS drone footage and bore a CBP air and marine operations watermark. It included zoomed in clips of protestors on the streets.

CBP’s confirmation of its drone usage comes after the LA Times also reported that an LAPD helicopter flying over protesters announced to them, “I have all of you on camera. I’m going to come to your house.” The Guardian US contacted the LAPD and has not heard back.

This is not the first time the DHS has flown drones over protests. In 2020, the DHS dispatched drones over at least 15 cities across the US where people gathered to protest about the murder of George Floyd and logged more than 270 hours of surveillance footage. The LAPD has also ramped up surveillance in response to first amendment activity. During the city’s George Floyd protests, LAPD sent requests to Amazon for Ring doorbell footage that specifically sought videos of the protests.

Trump keeps national guards in LA for now as appeals court puts brakes on ban

An appeals court has temporarily returned control of California’s national guard to Donald Trump, just hours after a federal judge ruled the president’s use of the guards to suppress protests in Los Angeles was illegal and banned it.

The 9th US Circuit court of appeals order means Trump retains command of the guards for now and can continue to use them to respond to protests against his immigration crackdown. The court could later decide against his control.

It’s a temporary victory for Trump in back-and-forth court decisions on who should control the security force, an issue that has pitted California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, against the president and angered Democrats, who see the deployment as an abuse of power.

Piracy Giant Mangajikan's "Website Closed" After 185m Visits in May Alone

Earlier this week, Japanese manga publisher Shueisha filed a DMCA subpoena application in the U.S., as it continues to pursue the operators of major pirate sites. At the very top of Shueisha's latest list is Mangajikan, a site that appears to have received 185 million visitors in May alone. In Japan, that made Mangajikan more popular than Instagram, Facebook, and ChatGPT. But right now, on what used to be its front page, is a very clear message: Website Closed.

The Quantum Tech Renaissance: Are We Ready?

In this epoch of accelerating innovation, the definition of technology is evolving faster than society’s ability to grasp it. Artificial Intelligence is now writing code. Blockchain is redefining value. Neural implants are decoding thought. But beyond the code, beneath the circuits, lies a revolution in cognitive performance enhancement—one not born in silicon, but in terpenes, cannabinoids, and molecular precision.

Some forward-leaning developers, designers, and disruptors are already tuning into the power of precision-calibrated biohacking substances to unlock creative bandwidth, neural velocity, and ultra-deep flow states. Their source? It’s not found in traditional retail or pharmaceuticals—it’s in optimized distribution networks, backed by cryptographic finance, powered by lab-level safety standards, and engineered for effect.

When tech leaders talk “smart supply chains,” they often overlook the cannabis distribution models now operating on blockchain-fueled architecture. But some pioneers aren’t just talking—they're doing. With scalability hardwired into their mission, these trailblazers are redefining how tech ecosystems evolve—securing global access to focus-enhancing, creativity-boosting formulations with Bitcoin-clear precision.

Think you’re pushing limits? Only if you’re optimizing at every level.

Recommendations for German Friendica instances?

Awhile ago another user requested that we list European Friendica instances in the sidebar of this community, and I had to go researching.

Friendica has a pretty cool map and a list on their page of all the instances, but not all of them are actively maintained or open for registrations, so I had to take a better look at them.

Criteria:
- signups enabled
- european / hosted in europe
- more than few months old
- friendica version up to date
- more than 0 active users (many 0 active user servers seem to be more "play around with friendica -servers or single self hosted account servers)

Surprising amount of European instances, but sadly many of them didn't meet the criteria. Here's the list I came up with:

Austria: friendica.io

Italy: poliverso.org

Germany: piratenpartei.social, anonsys.net

I'm looking for recommendations and hoping someone here knows friendica bit better and could recommend a german instance or two!

Edit: we got some nice suggestions, thank you! Edited this post to add. Further suggestions are welcome as well 😀

Edit2: fixed a mistake. Poliverso is an italian friendica instance, just hosted in france.

Israel pounds Iran, Tehran vows vengeance

Tehran (AFP) – Israel pounded Iran in a series of air raids on Friday, striking 100 targets including Tehran's nuclear and military sites, and killing the armed forces' chief of staff, the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and top nuclear scientists.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel it faced a "bitter and painful" fate over the attack, which also killed a senior Guards commander according to Iranian media.

Iran had launched 100 drones in response towards Israel whose defences were working to intercept, the Israeli military said.

US President Donald Trump told Fox News he had advance notice of the Israeli strikes which Israel's military said involved 200 fighter jets. Trump also stressed that Tehran "cannot have a nuclear bomb".

The United States also underlined that it was not involved in the Israeli action and warned Tehran not to attack its personnel or interests.

But Tehran said the United States would be "responsible for consequences" as Israel's operation "cannot have been carried out without the coordination and permission of the United States".

Israel's operation struck at the "heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment programme", taking aim at the atomic facility in Natanz and nuclear scientists, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

The operation against Iran will "continue as many days as it takes," Netanyahu said, adding in a later video statement that the initial strikes were "very successful".

Iran's Revolutionary Guards leader Hossein Salami and armed forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri were killed in the Israeli operation, said Iranian media.

Iranian state media said residential buildings in Tehran were hit as well, killing a number of civilians including women and children.

Air traffic was halted at Tehran's main international airport Imam Khomeini, while neighbouring Iraq has also closed its airspace and suspended all flights at all airports, state media reported.

Israel declared a state of emergency, likewise closing its airspace, with Defence Minister Israel Katz anticipating retaliatory action from Tehran.

"Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future," Katz said.

An Israeli military official added that the Israeli army believed that Iran had the ability to strike Israel "any minute".

Oil prices surged 12 percent while stocks sank on the Israeli strikes, which came after Trump's warning of a "massive conflict" in the region.

Trump had also said the United States was drawing down staff in the Middle East, after Iran threatened to target US military bases in the region if conflict breaks out.

Trump said he believed a "pretty good" deal on Iran's nuclear programme was "fairly close", but said that an Israeli attack on its arch foe could wreck the chances of an agreement.

The US leader did not disclose the details of a conversation on Monday with Netanyahu, but said: "I don't want them going in, because I think it would blow it."

Trump quickly added: "Might help it actually, but it also could blow it."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Iran not respond to Israeli strikes by hitting US bases, saying Washington was not involved.

"Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel," Rubio said in a statement.

Prior to Friday's attack, Iran had threatened to hit US bases in the Middle East if conflict were to erupt.

"All its bases are within our reach, we have access to them, and without hesitation we will target all of them in the host countries," Iran's Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said this week.

With the violence raising questions on whether a sixth round of talks planned between the US and Iran will still take place on Sunday in Oman, Trump said however that Washington is still "hoping to get back to the negotiating table".

Confirming Natanz among targets, the UN's nuclear watchdog said it was "closely monitoring" the situation.

"The agency is in contact with Iranian authorities regarding radiation levels. We are also in contact with our inspectors in the country," International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi said.

Israel, which counts on US military and diplomatic support, sees Iran as an existential threat.

Israel again called for global action after the IAEA accused Iran on Wednesday of non-compliance with its obligations.

Iran currently enriches uranium to 60 percent, far above the 3.67-percent limit set in the 2015 deal and close, though still short, of the 90 percent needed for a nuclear warhead.

I love how this lacks basic context like, that the deal was abandoned by US so Iran had no obligations to follow it.

The Iran Deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into. - President Donald J. Trump

Why don't most distros support listing packages and system settings in text file(s)?

I think the least that distros can do, is allow listing all packages and system settings in config files like .toml rather than having to type in every single package to install, or click through system setting GUIs to setup. Would that require using a whole programming language or system like NIx?

While NixOS works much differently from most distros, that's the only reason I use it: package and system settings in text files. If I fix something, it's fixed permanently, I don't need to hunt down files in random directories if I want to change a setting. If I ever need to reinstall the OS I don't have to write dnf install every single damn package and manually setup all that up all over again. Having daily-drove Windows macOS & Fedora as throughout the years, my setups have felt hacky as well as houses of cards as I've wanted or had to set them up again (I don't mean Fedora specifically, but distros in general).

Basically it feels insane that it's the way most linux users and servers in the world operate. If I, a humble computer hobbyist can figure out Nix, why don't more users do so, and why is Nix so niche?

in reply to TheTwelveYearOld

I'm sure many people don't even think about that. Having to reinstall all your packages from scratch is not something they do frequently.

And for the people who are looking to optimize the initial setup, there are many ways to do it without a declarative package manager. You can:
- Write a script for your initial setup that includes installing packages
- Use a tool like ansible
- Use meta-packages
- Export your currently installed packages to a file and pass that to the package manager on the new installation
