US envoy doubles down on support for Syria's government and criticizes Israel's intervention

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/33291368

BEIRUT (AP) — A U.S. envoy doubled down on Washington’s support for Syria’s new government, saying Monday there is “no Plan B” to working with it to unite the country still reeling from years of civil war and wracked by new sectarian violence.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Tom Barrack also criticized Israel’s recent intervention in Syria, calling it poorly timed and saying it complicated efforts to stabilize the region.

Barrack is ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria, with a short-term mandate in Lebanon. He spoke in Beirut following more than a week of clashes in Syria’s southern province of Sweida between militias of the Druze religious minority and Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes.

Syrian government forces intervened, ostensibly to restore order, but ended up siding with the Bedouins before withdrawing under a ceasefire agreement with Druze factions. Hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and some government fighters allegedly shot dead Druze civilians and burned and looted homes.

Neighboring Israel intervened last week on behalf of the Druze, who are seen as a loyal minority within Israel and often serve in its military. Israel launched dozens of strikes on convoys of government forces in Sweida and struck the Ministry of Defense headquarters in central Damascus.

Over the weekend, Barrack announced a ceasefire between Syria and Israel. Syrian government forces have redeployed in Sweida to halt renewed clashes between the Druze and Bedouins, and civilians from both sides were set to be evacuated Monday.

And nothing will be done to stop this tragedy.

The left are filled with toothless pacifist pussies impotently waving signs while waggling their fingers uselessly at openly aggressive fascists, and the right are filled with wealthy cartoon villains exploiting people openly with zero consequences.

The distribution site was run by a new aid provider active in Gaza for only a few weeks. Khalil quickly noticed military presence. “We saw the Israeli soldiers in full military uniform standing next to their armored vehicles. We arrived knowing the place was dangerous. But, there was no clash, no threat to them,” Khalil said.

Imagine the fear, waiting for food distribution, surrounded by the enemy that has been indiscriminately killing your people for years, nay decades.

He stood in line with hundreds of others. There were children, women, and elderly men. “Some were barefoot, some had been waiting since the night before,” he recalled.

As his group inched closer to the point where they hoped they would be able to grab a parcel of items, gunshots rang out. Khalil ran for his life.

“They began shooting directly at unarmed civilians,” he said. “The bullets were chasing us as if we were targets on a shooting range, and not just hungry people. We scattered under a hail of bullets. I got closer to death that day than a piece of bread.”

Khalil survived that quest for food — alive to starve another day instead. But at least 36 Palestinians did not, and 207 more were wounded, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Since Israel broke its ceasefire with Hamas in mid-March, more than 875 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food.

Calling this humanitarian aid is "Ministry of Truth" level cynicism.

Further:

Usually during war, the distribution of medical care and food to a besieged population would not be administered by any party waging war against it, much less by an illegally occupying military. And in most situations, aid operations would closely involve established organizations already active in the area.

But that’s not the case in Gaza. Israel has effectively banned the biggest and longest-running aid group in the region: the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA. And by gutting the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, a critical funding vehicle for aid groups including UNRWA, U.S. President Donald Trump has strangled international aid in Gaza.

Israel and the U.S. have instead rolled out a new scheme centered around a fledgling U.S.-based nonprofit that operates alongside the same Israeli military responsible for killing more than 230 journalists, 1,400 health care workers, and 17,000 Palestinian children in the last two years.

With a few small exceptions, all aid reaching Gaza since May has moved through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which was established in Delaware in February. The organization has received tens of millions from the U.S. to distribute aid in Gaza — and, reportedly, some $100 million from an unnamed country.

There it is again. Government-funded terror and mass murder under the guise of humanitarian aid.

WHO says residence and main warehouse in Gaza hit by Israeli forces

Staff quarters attacked three times and four people detained, three temporarily, as IDF tanks enter Deir al-Balah

The World Health Organization has said the Israeli military attacked its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir al-Balah on Monday, compromising its operations in Gaza.

The UN agency said the WHO staff residence was attacked three times, with airstrikes causing a fire and extensive damage, and endangering staff and their families, including children.

in reply to Riddick3001

The zionists dont value western lives any more than they do Palestinian ones. If it werent for the funding they extract from the west, they'd be attacking every non israeli they see. Its not the first time they have done this. They cleansed the region like this back in the Roman Jewish wars.
in reply to Riddick3001

Palestinians desperate for in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood of central Gaza City, on Sunday. Israel has routinely attacked Palestinians seeking food aid.

I'm really glad The Guardian's not whitewashing what Israel is doing and actually calling it out. It's getting harder and harder for news outlets to cover up the genocide

Russian Photographer Gets 16 Years For Sharing Public Soviet Bunker Data

In Vladimir Putin’s Russia, sharing details of publications openly sold in bookstores can result in a 16-year prison sentence.

This has been the fate of Grigory Skvortsov, a 35-year-old photographer and musician from Perm.

Skvortsov was one of thousands across Russia who purchased the 2021 publication Secret Soviet Bunkers by historian Dmitry Yurkov. The book reproduced scores of once secret diagrams of Soviet installations that had recently been declassified.

Some supplementary scans were made available with the book, which Skvortsov purchased. He later shared some of those documents with an unnamed American journalist.

Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has drastically expanded the scope of what can be deemed a "state secret."

In letters to friends, Skvortsov says the Russian authorities opened the case against him in order to hide their own failures in not noticing potentially sensitive information was being freely sold and passed around online.

“I did not have access to state secrets and had no malicious intent," the photographer wrote from detention. “The data was not protected by the state.... These facts are being ignored by the prosecution and the courts, who are treating the case formally, clearly out of fear of repression from the FSB."

in reply to cub Gucci

Secret Data is not something secret, it is something mentioned in the Secret Data List which itself is also in the Secret Data List.

good argument (/s)

if you want to provide an actual argument, better provide the whole argument, instead of basically just saying "you're wrong lol"

what causes it instead?

in reply to gandalf_der_12te

Yawn. Someone is profiting on tourism. Use your brain and follow the money ffs.
in reply to womjunru

I know why you got downvoted, but you are right, it's not about tourists, it's about the USA immigrants (the so called expats), since the goverment made changes to privately benefit from all the airbnb shit, we have people earning in dollars, that pay 0 taxes to México and of course the market tries to squeeze out their dollars, rising prices and changing the environment to appeal to those migrants, leaving out and even kicking out the nationals.

People are right to be angry about it, but they are aiming to the wrong part, this was allowed (and boosted) by the past and present administration (even when they were warned about it) to fill their own pockets even if it meant stepping on their own people.

in reply to Ofiuco

The people in power allow the rich to become richer on the backs of the poor.

“I’m not the problem!” Says the rich man, “it’s those immigrants, whose money I’m taking, who are the problem. Fight amongst yourselves”

in reply to womjunru

To a lesser extent, many USA immigrants are trying to make everything around them to their liking instead of integrating themselves to a new culture... And a lot of mexicans are happy to lick their soles expecting to become one of them or be accepted by them.
in reply to Ofiuco

This is how demand works. If the population of an area want a Starbucks, they get a Starbucks. I’ve lived in many areas that were cool until they became “cool,” if you catch my meaning. Prices went up and I had to leave. It’s tempting to blame the people who came in and were willing to spend money. But while trying to find the root cause of the problem, they quickly become… Not the problem.

I’d say few people go into a new area and think, gosh I want to make this different. They went there because they wanted to be there. If a Starbucks pops up, they aren’t exactly upset, but they probably could live without it.

The problem is the people who own these places. Those people aren’t the ones protesting. And if you want to think of it from a purely ownership standpoint, the people protesting have no right to complain what the people who own the land want to do with it.

I have no idea what the solution is beyond rent control and price caps. Those two things will keep costs down regardless of tourism, discouraging landowners from changing the area to suit the demand of tourism.

Additionally, preventing foreign companies from establishing their businesses in the region would preserve the local culture. However, as previously mentioned, it is the individuals who own this land—both in a literal and a political sense—who are facilitating this occurrence.

"And we're seeing a particular pattern of injuries whereby particular body parts are being targeted on particular days. So one day we will see mainly abdominal gunshot wounds. Another day we'll see head gunshot wounds. Another day we'll see neck gunshot wounds. So there is a very clear pattern that all, not just me but all of us, have seen in this hospital, whereby particular body parts are targeted on particular days"
in reply to Rhaxapopouetl

Pfeiffer: The shooting that we heard earlier that's happening so close to your hospital, are we hearing fighting? Are we hearing defense? What is happening that is so audible in the background?

Maynard: This is through fighting almost certainly between gangs or families who are fighting over food. We've seen this on several occasions. This is not the Israeli military and it's not Hamas, we're told very reliably. It's fighting gangs or fighting families who are trying to get food, and this is born out of desperation for food because they are all starving.

Gunshot wounds like that could also be results from these fights between Palestinians.

in reply to Rhaxapopouetl

They're doing some Rape of Nanking shit over there, aren't they?

How long til we learn that they've been performing vivisections, and kicking human heads around like footballs?

"The cause of this acceleration is not explained," Leonid Zotov, a leading authority on Earth rotation at Moscow State University, told Timeanddate.com. "Most scientists believe it is something inside the Earth. Ocean and atmospheric models don't explain this huge acceleration."

Zotov predicts Earth’s rotation may soon decelerate once again. If he’s right, this sudden speeding-up could prove to be just a temporary anomaly in the planet’s long-term trend toward slower rotation and longer days.

"Something" in the core is "happening" "in a way" that's speeding us up. Temporarily.

This is just minor trivia in Earth's history. 🤷‍♂️

How come Lemmy rarely shows up in internet search results?

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?
in reply to countrypunk

From an SEO perspective, federation looks almost exactly the same as spam unfortunately. A bunch of websites with very similar content that all link to each other but aren’t linked to externally very much.

Yes, you need people. But I'd say Reddit has too many people. The Ethernal September problem: sometimes, small is better.
in reply to Scrollone

The thing with Reddit is that it got too big and political. It was open before but yet still fun a decade ago.
in reply to ayyy

Yes, it hurts discoverability. How can you have a community without people?

I'd like to ask it the other way around: How many people would it need until you'd say "Yep, that's a community alright."?

in reply to ayyy

This person gets it! After I launched my website/blog it showed up immediately on google, even though it's content is directly pulled from my Lemmy instance. Which has been running much longer than the site, and cannot be found using search engines.
in reply to countrypunk

Depends on the search engine you use. I started giving Kagi a try and it has options to increase visibility of fediverse content in your searches.

I'd guess it's a mix of fediverse being a poor fit for ad-oriented SEO and relatively low adoption.

Golden Age of Iraq

Before war and hardship reshaped its destiny, Iraq flourished in a golden era of art, architecture, and modern life.

Baghdad in the 1950s to '70s was a beacon of culture and intellect where poets, professors, and families shared spaces with sculpted monuments and bustling cafés. Red double-decker buses cruised wide boulevards, fashion echoed European trends, and the spirit of progress filled the air.

This was a nation confidently looking to the future, rich in history and proud of its identity, an Iraq now remembered through photos, memories, and the enduring resilience of its people.

Well, I fail to see what makes it better than Freenet. Which ended up becoming exactly that.

In Freenet you replicate random blocks from over the network. While this thing is like torrents, you replicate what you download. At least that.

No fundamental difference between censorship for being an anarchist humanitarian and for sharing CSAM. There's a hierarchy, the top of which either decides to ban you or press someone else to ban you.

If the hierarchy is voluntary (as in paying attention to deletion\ignore messages signed only by those authorities you chose yourself), then both CSAM and anarchist speech will be shared.

Best you can do without enabling censorship is to choose what you replicate (Freenet doesn't have that, hence CSAM flourishes there, with this thing it might be less convenient - you'll have IP addresses of all the pedos ; sharing CSAM is a crime so it hurts them, being an anarchist is not so it hurts anarchists less ; though some way to achieve pseudonymity with still only storing what you want would be good).
