Israeli forces raid former air defence base near Syrian capital
Israeli forces raided a former air defence base in southern Syria on Wednesday during a series of airstrikes in the area – their farthermost such operation inside Syria since Bashar al-Assad was ousted last December.
The site, near the city of al-Kiswah, about 6 miles (10km) south of Damascus, was a strategic base for Iranian militias during Assad’s rule.
Syrian state media reported that the Israeli military had carried out strikes in the same area a day earlier, killing six Syrian troops who had found Israeli listening and spying devices there. The troops were in the process of dismantling the devices when they were killed, state media said.

How do I check the wifi connection in Whonix?
Skip the flavour text by going to the bold text
In my sky high arrogance I thought 'I have never let Linux grace my devices, how hard can Qubes/Whonix truly be?' and I learned my lesson within minutes.
So I come here before you, humbly and beaten by 0s and 1s, to ask for your help.
How do I open a window where it neatly lists available connections and, if so, my current connection?
Usually when I am connected, it has a wifi symbol on the top right where the rest of my panels are. It disappeared.
I tried searching on the internet for answers. My mental capacity is basically non-existent, otherwise I wouldn't be here (probably).
Please. I just want to connect my device via wifi. I do not own an ethernet cable.
Thank you.

NGL, I am quite surprised by this move.
They have either already agreed on a peace deal behind the curtains, and the clown just tries to somehow boost his rating (I don't believe it can possibly work..), or.. idk... Voluntarily giving up your cannon fodder is super weird.. The kidnapping can now only be extended to 23YOs (from current 25YOs) - could it really help? All the fascist are saying that kidnapping age should be lowered to 18 and include women as well, and we see the opposite here.. Super weird move, unless a peace deal has been reached 🤷
btw, any lib here wants to take a guess why "the last bastion of democracy with legitimate and democratic president" would want to create a law for imprisoning for up to three years people who want to flee to the "aggressor country that tries to genocide all Ukrainians" (or whatever is the current narrative)?
What idiots would want to that, isn't that literally suicide? And on such a mass scale that they want to create a law for that purpose? Huh.
His rating is irrelevant, he can hold on to power indefinitely as long as he controls the security apparatus. Even if he allows elections which is highly unlikely, it is very easy to rig them given how nearly the entire state apparatus is under their control. So i don't think this is why he's doing it.
A more likely explanation for me is that this is a way of further dialing up the pressure on the Europeans, threatening to unleash a wave of migration that the already strained societies in Europe, already on the brink of economic crisis and with their own social tensions brewing, cannot afford. It's a form of blackmail so they continue to give him a blank check.
He also knows that most of the forcefully mobilized, with rock bottom motivation and nearly non-existent training, are virtually useless at the front as anything but fodder to sit in trenches.
Worse still, this is exactly the demographic that if pushed to the brink could unleash massive protests, and, if too many of them are mobilized at once, meaning faster than they can be broken and brainwashed by the prevailing Nazi culture in the army, there is also a real threat that they could start a cascade of mutinies.
Further, there are also no jobs and no prospects for these people now which makes them even more of a powderkeg, so it is safer to unload them on the Europeans.
His only hope is for the Europeans to put boots on the ground and send their actual militaries, because that is the only way to replenish his now all but depleted stock of real, professional soldiers. He needs to continue to find ways to drag Europe deeper and deeper into the conflict.

Israeli official Alexandrovich skips US court hearing on child sex charges
A senior Israeli official accused of child sex crimes in the United States has failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing in his case, weeks after he returned to Israel, prompting concerns that he may have fled to avoid facing trial.
The Israeli official was arrested on August 6, but the incident was not made public until more than a week later, when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced an undercover operation “targeting child sex predators”.
Alexandrovich was released and allowed to return to Israel after being charged with luring or attempting to lure a child online to engage in sexual conduct.

Mystery surrounds $1.2 billion Army contract to build huge detention tent camp in Texas desert
WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Donald Trump’s administration last month awarded a contract worth up to $1.2 billion to build and operate what it says will become the nation’s largest immigration detention complex, it didn’t turn to a large government contractor or even a firm that specializes in private prisons.
Instead, it handed the project on a military base to Acquisition Logistics LLC, a small business that has no listed experience running a correction facility and had never won a federal contract worth more than $16 million. The company also lacks a functioning website and lists as its address a modest home in suburban Virginia owned by a 77-year-old retired Navy flight officer.
The mystery over the award only deepened last week as the new facility began to accept its first detainees. The Pentagon has refused to release the contract or explain why it selected Acquisition Logistics over a dozen other bidders to build the massive tent camp at Fort Bliss in West Texas. At least one competitor has filed a complaint.
US air force to grant military honors to Capitol rioter fatally shot on January 6
The US air force will provide military funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt, the rioter fatally shot during the January 6 Capitol attack, marking another step in Donald Trump’s aggressive rehabilitation of the attack.
The under secretary of the air force, Matthew Lohmeier, confirmed the decision in an August letter to Babbitt’s family. The Biden administration previously denied Babbitt the honors, but Lohmeier said he was “persuaded that the previous determination was incorrect” after reviewing new information about her death.
Babbitt, 35, served in the air force and air national guard and was shot by Capitol Hill police as she climbed through a barricaded door near the House chamber in the mass frenzy to overthrow the results of the 2020 election. The air force had originally refused honors in February 2021, according to Lohmeier’s letter, saying they would “bring discredit upon the Air Force” due to the circumstances of her death. She was the only person killed by gunfire during the riot.

European nations start process to impose 'snapback' sanctions on Iran
France, Germany and the United Kingdom started the process on Thursday to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, after a 12-day conflict with Israel in June saw its atomic sites repeatedly bombed.
The mechanism, termed snapback by the diplomats who negotiated it into the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) with world powers, was designed to be veto-proof at the UN and is likely to go into effect.
It would again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran and penalise any development of its ballistic missile program, among other measures, further squeezing the country's reeling economy.
The European move starts a 30-day clock for the sanctions to return, a period that could see intensified diplomacy from Iran, whose refusal to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) inspectors started the crisis.

White House seeks to use Chicago-area military base for ‘sanctuary cities’ crackdown
The White House has requested that a US military base on the outskirts of Chicago assist with immigration operations as the Trump administration plans a broader takeover of Democratic-run “sanctuary cities”.
On Thursday, the Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security had reached out for assistance, telling the Associated Press that the DHS had requested “limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure, and other logistical needs to support DHS operations”.
An NSGL spokesperson told the outlet that no decisions have been made regarding the request and that the base has not yet received any official request to support a national guard deployment. The Guardian has reached out to the NSGL for comment.

Vast majority of Israelis believe there are 'no innocents' in Gaza, says poll
A poll conducted by an Israeli organisation has revealed that the vast majority of Israeli Jews believe there are "no innocents" in the Gaza Strip. aChord, a research group linked to Hebrew University specialising in social psychology, said 76 percent of the Jewish public partially or fully agree that "there are no innocents in Gaza".
The survey found that even among Israeli opposition voters, 47 percent fully supported the claim, while among Jewish opposition voters, a majority also agrees with the claim. Researcher Ron Gerlitz described the results of the survey as "difficult findings" that indicated attitudes that fed into acceptance of Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab sentiment in Israel has been growing in recent years, targeting both Palestinians in the occupied territories and Palestinian citizens of Israel. Last week, a Palestinian bus driver in Israel was attacked by a group of Jewish youths shouting "death to Arabs", the latest incident in a string of racist attacks on Palestinian citizens of Israel. The bus driver, Mohammed Abd al-Hadi, told Ynet the incident happened after he asked the young passengers to stop screaming and vandalising the vehicle. "They insulted me and shouted racist sayings like 'Jew - good; Arab - son of a removed' and 'death to Arabs'," he said.

There was no 'Hamas camera' - just complicit media enabling Israel's genocide
They took umbrage at their prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, calling the double-tap bombing of Nasser hospital “a tragic mishap”. It was neither tragic nor a mishap, according to them. Channel 14, which supports Netanyahu’s government and the war, reported military sources as saying the attack killed “terrorists disguised as journalists”. The sources said that soldiers targeted a Hamas “terror headquarters” in Nasser hospital.
“According to the current security concept, any place where terrorists operate, whether it used to be a school or a hospital, becomes a legitimate target,” the report noted. Soldiers involved in the attack told Channel 14 that it had been “approved and coordinated with the senior command, and they knew about it before it was carried out”. Similarly, Maariv reported that it was carried out “after receiving approvals from the command level”.
Zvi Yehezkeli, the Arab affairs correspondent for i24 News, praised the killings in Khan Younis: “These are Nukhba men in every way,” he said, referring to the slain journalists as members of an elite Hamas military unit. “If Israel decides to eliminate the journalists, then it’s better late than never.” Yehezkeli, a settler living in the occupied West Bank, is at least being honest. That is more than can be said for two international news agencies, Reuters and the AP, that used the work of these slain journalists for whom, one naively assumes, they should feel a duty of care.
Apparently not. Both swiftly reported without qualification the Israeli military’s ever-changing excuse for targeting the hospital: that the Golani Brigade was targeting a camera used by Hamas. This provides no explanation for the second strike 15 minutes after the first, which wiped out the journalists. In reporting this claim straight, as if Israel had the right to balance the assertion that the journalists were targeted with its own fabrication, Reuters and the AP offered no account of the fact that this “Hamas” camera could have indeed been the camera set up for Reuters to use as a live feed.
Media was also integral to the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust. Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels systematically dehumanised the Jews, justified their persecution, and secured public support for mass murder. The concentration camps compelled prisoners to send postcards home saying they were being treated well. Concerts were filmed in Theresienstadt, after which the entire crew was sent to Auschwitz.
Propaganda that Jews were being “resettled in the east” was critical to the Nazi regime’s attempts to disguise its “final solution” in the gas chambers. Today, Israeli media reports on negotiations with South Sudan as the destination for an “evacuation” of Palestinians in Gaza as if it were the most normal and humanitarian thing in the world.

Tesla sales in Europe slump 40% as BYD new car registrations more than triple
Tesla sales slumped 40% across Europe in July compared with a year earlier as Elon Musk’s electric car company faces increasingly tough competition from its Chinese rival BYD.
There were 8,837 sales of Tesla cars last month across the EU, the European Free Trade Association and the UK, according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). That compared with 14,769 at the same point last year.
New car registrations for BYD across Europe rose to 13,503 last month, compared with 4,151 a year earlier. BYD now has 1.2% market share, the ACEA found. Tesla’s share remains at 0.8%.

Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv kills at least 18 people
Russian airstrikes on Kyiv have killed at least 18 people and wounded dozens in the most deadly night raid on the Ukrainian capital since the Alaska summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
Seventeen people were reported killed when a five-storey residential building in the eastern Darnytskyi district was struck in the middle of the night, said Svitlana Vodolaha, a spokesperson for the state rescue service.
A further 10 were still unaccounted for but not all may have been the building at the time, she added. There were 200 rescuers and 59 rescue vehicles on site and the search and clean-up effort was expected to go on into the night.
The victims included four children, Vodolaha said. Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, had earlier said a child as young as two had died at the scene.
