This article is worth reading, imo. There's more going on here than the introduction of the "Max" 'super-app'. I wasn't aware of this but Russia has also been subjecting its population to a "digital detox" where Internet blackouts are becoming increasingly common. In some areas the Internet is down most of the time, in others service has returned but is extremely poor compared to before the blackout. Mobile Internet blackouts have been performed claiming without evidence that it's to disrupt drones coming from Ukraine.
In some areas this Max 'super-app' (which handles banking, communication, and more--and is a direct line for government surveillance) is the only option to do banking or communicate with anybody by phone. This practice is sweeping the country after declaring Meta a terrorist organization, and swiftly eliminating any Meta apps from Russian access including Instagram, Facebook, and the most popular app for communication in Russia: WhatsApp.
This is fucked on another level and i think we should be paying attention because this is presumably where Trump gets his inspiration and/or his marching orders, so i have a suspicion we'll see something similar wash up on our shores soon enough.
I've been thinking about this for a while now--a mass, extended Internet disruption would not only screw up communication on a grand scale here, but business would also be tremendously impacted. It's the next 'privilege' for us to have taken away and replaced with an enshittified surrogate, forcing large swaths of people to sign over even more of their autonomy to big brother in exchange to have all the things the Internet has now made possible. Want to be able to easily get navigation on gps? Talk to your friends or family? Pay bills using your bank account? Imagine there was only 1 app that will allow you to do that from now on. I can only imagine how shitty the user experience is on "Max" but i suppose in time i won't need to--I'll have a front row seat to try it out here in the comfort of my home one of these days, seeing the direction things appear to be heading in. I mean shit, we're probably already nearly there and i just don't realize it yet 🫠
It is indeed total ass. Reporting from the ground here, mobile internet is effectively dead - cloudflare is banned and most vpn protocols are cut after 20kb. There are still ways, like ssh forwarding, amnezia and zapret, but the trend is towards blocking all encrypted traffic going abroad. Complete outages are also common as well.
Wired is a bit better, I see disruptions frequently between my ru and non-ru nodes, but it's usually between two hosts and relayable, no complete ban like on mobile.
Max is on track of becoming mandatory. It already is for school students and their parents. Gosuslugi (gov services) already show an option to use it for auth, there are alrwady deeper integrations on the way that would make it a requirement.
It is pretty openly spied upon. I'm not touching that shit with a six foot pole, but there were already arrests over things said in voice-calls and I've even heard reports of FSB agents interjecting right in the middle of the call, saying they're being too annoying and force-hanging the call.
Well, if you compare all this to the Fediverse and Threads, then a national segment being functional in case of a potential self-isolation is kinda fine.
And just how they say that an absolutely secure computer is not networked, doesn't have media reading devices and is turned off, - most of tech is possibly compromised by the USA.
And some of the jamming really coincides with areas where the explanation about Ukraine makes sense (military locations nearby). I've, eh, been in one such yesterday and today morning.
About one app for everything, dystopia and so on - the Internet as a thing is designed this way. Notice how Meta itself came into existence, and Google, and them all. After all, the Internet grew out of a military project, militaries usually have one specific approach to hierarchy and initiative. Would be weird if their system weren't designed with it in mind.
Of course Putin wants more power and surveillance. But since much of the population already does a lot over VK, it's not such a big change as it would seem.
You would have to be a complete lib dummy not to "target" whatsapp.

- Israel’s attempt to sway WhatsApp case casts doubt on its ability to deal with NSO spyware cases

And likewise you would have to be a complete tankie dummy to trust some putin app.
Yet another example of libs and tankies being the same thing with different imperial branding.

Google quietly removes net-zero carbon goal from website amid rapid power-hungry AI data center buildout — industry-first sustainability pledge moved to background amidst AI energy crisis
It's ok. Consumers will take up the slack on climate change. You'll just not be able to do anything ever or eat normal food. I know a lot of you say that if you don't eat meat it produces a lot less carbon.
But what if I did eat meat and google didn't spend the energy grid's entire power supply chasing dominance in a technology none of want that badly.
This is the classic example of rent seeking. Rent seeking is when resources are spent on a contest that doesn't actually produce anything for the public. And the total resources spent on the contest by all parties can exceed even the benefit to the victor. It's Mr. Beast but instead of people exhausting themselves it's corporations exhausting the planet.

Bernie Sanders breaks with Democrats and endorses popular oyster farmer running against Susan Collins
A surging grassroots campaign has already formed behind Graham Platner, known online as ‘the oysterman,’ who is attempting to oust beleaguered Republican Susan Collins
Sanders’ endorsement of the 40-year-old Platner comes at odds with others in the Democratic Party, who are reportedly hoping that the state’s 77-year-old Governor Janet Mills will enter the race instead.
The Vermont Senator and Platner are set to hold a rally on Labor Day with logger turned Maine gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson in Portland, Maine. The venue has been changed from an auditorium to a much larger arena due to the interest, according to Rolling Stone.
Prior to his bid, launched earlier this month, Platner has no political experience and though he has dismissed being labeled as “liberal,” he has embraced several more progressive policies, in line with those of Sanders.

Of course he does. Putin needs to sell oil. It's a major Russian export earner. If US demand for oil and gas drops, so do global prices for those commodities. Less money for Puto, less ability for him to murder Ukrainians.
And unlike low-cost producers like the Saudis, Russia needs a moderately high price just to break even on their production.

What fucked it up was he selling to the wrong company. But we do not know why he did it. For all we know, he was tired to taking lead in the project and wanted to cash out. He was entitled to do that, or what is the option, force him to work on it just for your needs or to sell to only the company that you or I approved of? What gives us the right to force their hand?
It sucks but that is what he wanted. We both agree that it us unfortunate though. It is too bad.

Monopoly™ the game is structually engineered so that players kill the competition and secure the entire board. Would playing by the game's rules make me inherently a capitalist jerk? No, because they dictate my behaviour and not following them would put me outside the realm of the game (i.e. the system) resulting in my loss (decay).
If the capitalist system incentivizes me to outcompete others and hoard my wealth and, conversely, punishes me for my altruism; then, I am forced to play by the rules of such a system.
"Human nature" is much more complex to be reduced to just greed. This is what's so cool about being humans, we are so malleable and can be many many things either at once or separately.
Edit: I want to give some concrete examples to what I'm saying. Initially, the Google leadership was skeptical about AI funding, because of privacy and environmental concerns. Yet, as rival competition grew they backpedaled because this would mean their spot as the strongest teck company would be usurped. The late hop into AI funding and development heavily impacted their prospects and they remain falling behind in this respect (source). Here, we have an exemplary case of how the system automatically punishes hood deeds and reinforces predatory and greedy acts.
Google unceremoniously dropped its promise of carbon neutrality, with emissions rising nearly 50% over the last five years

Her game was bought by a jerk who removed the co-op mode and then claimed Monopoly as his own game. She died penniless.
So change it... or be a pebble in the mountain of change.

I really like being able to set swipe actions on my icons. For example swiping up or down on an icon will open an alternative app, folder, or a specific functionality. It's allowed me to keep a clean screen while keeping everything I need accessible.

I used Nova on my last phone and it worked great, I paid for pro. So I know what I'm missing, not worth it to get back in the Google Play Store system though. I like being anon with no Google account, especially considering Nova sold to a company that data mines user data?

Also the button to disable all work (profile) apps is neatly placed.
