Family of French woman killed by ex-partner to go to court to find out why she was not protected
The family of a woman killed by an ex-partner who bombarded her with hundreds of messages and calls will ask a judge on Monday to force the French authorities to explain why they failed to protect her.Sandra Pla had complained to police three times about Mickaël Falou’s threatening behaviour over a period of six months, but her application for a protection order was rejected.
Between 3 January 2021 when Pla, 31, ended their relationship and 18 June 2021, Falou, 40, bombarded her with 317 text messages and telephoned her 67 times. His almost daily presence outside her home was recorded by the doorbell camera her parents installed, but police said Falou was on the public highway and could not be prosecuted. Finally, Pla’s mother, Annie, and stepfather, Gérard, moved from Spain into her small apartment in Bordeaux to protect their daughter, who was so scared her doctor signed her off work for 15 days.
Last year, 136 women were killed by partners or ex-partners in France, a rise of more than 44% on 2023. In the last five years, the French state has faced several cases brought by victims’ families who accuse it of failing to act to prevent the killings. In June, the state was ordered to pay €27,000 (£23,000) to the family of Nathalie Debaillie, killed by her former partner in Lille in 2019. It is facing at least two other cases, not including Pla’s: the murder of Chahinez Daoud, 31, who was burned alive by her husband in 2021 and the killing of Patricia Gomit, 51, by her ex-partner in 2022.

Fabulous. I despise that guy that feels he needs to listen to his YouTube algorithm on full volume.
It's worse in south East Asia, but sure, let's make a start somewhere.
So many people I hate in public transit for this.
The young dude who HAS to play his shitty music on speaker (we all know you have headphones, you all do).
The parents who gave their 2 children an ipad to play games on at full volume.
The teenage to late 20s girl/woman who can't talk to her friends without having it on speaker, and thinks yelling about her one night stand in the train is appropriate.
Fuck all the people who do any of those.
Berlin has even started making announcements about it: "Please mind others and keep your music, tiktoks and phone calls in your ear instead of playing them through your loudspeaker".
The German version holds back a little less: "...music, tiktoks and calls belong in your ear and not played over your speaker".

And also he defined that term very specifically. He said only that Trump is acting in the best interests of Russia. When someone normally uses that language, they mean they are in the employ of a country, like a spy.
So, it's meant to be inflammatory and spur action on the part of the US and Europe.
Not a single traditional party in Portugal has a name that matches the political ideology the practice:
- The "Socialist Party" (PS) one of the two dominant "center" parties is Neoliberal (as seen from their love for Privatisation and "Free Markets").
- The "Social Democrat Party" (PSD) the other dominant "center" party is slightly more Neoliberal (roughly similar to the US Democrat Party mainstream, so PSD is actually to the Right of the Progressives in the US)
- The "Communist Party" (PC) love Putin, a Fascist and even their "leftwing" thinking is little more than Soviet Union slogans.
- The "Social and Democratic Center" (CDS) are the conservatives which in Portugal means the yearn for the previous regime (which were the Fascists)
Like in pretty much all other countries in the West the Overtoon Window has shifted rightwards, though even at the very beginning right after the Revolution in 1974 that overthrew the Fascist Dictatorship, the Socialist Party were never Socialists (it was the Communist Party that wanted a Revolution Of The Proletariat, not the Socialist Party) and similarly the Social Democrat Party was never Social Democrat (for example, they voted against the creation of a National Health Service in Portugal, the exact opposite of the Social Democrat ideals).

Surely the most important part is that a world leader called another world leader a russian asset?
I would like to point out to everyone underestimating Portugal's influence in world politics that, while I agree it hasn't been a military or economic major power in centuries, it has great diplomatic outreach:
- Part of the EU and has been used as an example of how to handle drug abuse
- Part of CPLP which seeks to align the interests of all Portuguese speaking countries (in Europe, South America, West and East Africa and Oceania)
- Vast naval territory in the Atlantic and the Azores which have hosted a US military base for decades
- Good relations with China especially after the return of Macau
- The current secretary general of the UN is an old portuguese Prime Minister
So while no longer a major country, it still has sway on how relations between some countries develop

The British citizens do have good relations with Portugal, just ask anyone in the Algarve.
To be honest I doubt Montenegro would care about the British either.
He was furious with Marcelo because he wanted to go unnoticed (he doesn't really have a defined international policy) and soon started receiving calls from the White House.
I've lived in Britain for a decade.
They couldn't care less about Portugal or the Portuguese and in general they see the Portuguese as just another bunch of Southern Europeans and their view of Southern Europeans is highly prejudiced in a negative way.
We're a puny little shitty shit country from their point of view, an impression reinforced by Portuguese Politicians bending over backwards and licking the arses of the British elites.
Like Britain is the "poodle" to America so is Portugal to Britain only even worse.
There's still a lot of dumb provincialism in Portugal when it comes to foreigners, especially amongst Portuguese Politicians and especially towards larger European nations such as Britain.
(Mind you, this outburst of Marcelo is pretty healthy in that sense and gives me hope that maybe that's changing, and I don't even like the guy).
The real specific qualities of Portugal have nothing to do with those delusions that past or present great powers are "friends" of Portugal.

Ok, "major world leader" is clickbait, they could've just said Portuguese President.
While i wouldn't describe Portugal as major, it isn't irrelevant either: early member of the EU (was the ECC back then), treaties with a lot of countries (Brazil being one on account of being an ex-colony and sharing the language), founding member of NATO, emigrant communities all over the world (US included), a few high-ranking politicians are Portuguese (President of the European Council António Costa, secretary-general of the UN António Guterres, ex-president of the European Comission Durão Barroso who now works for Goldman Sachs...). There's also that Cristiano Ronaldo guy.
The US also has a military base in a Portuguese island in the Atlantic.
Why this fascist fuck who likes taking selfies with his voters decided to criticize another fascist fuck is a mystery to me though...
Here we see a homo sapiens partaking in Whataboutism. He thinks bad stuff cancel each other out.
He also thinks unless you are a "VERY NICE AS A PERSON" master chef, you cannot critize food since what would you know, with your personality?
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is center-right, so more alligned with the democrats in the US, not with the Neonazi party that calls themselves conservative.
I wouldn't vote him, but calling him a fascist is pretty far off reality.
Why do you mention so many people but not him? Wtf does Ronaldo have to do with anything?
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is center-right, so more alligned with the democrats in the US, not with the Neonazi party that calls themselves conservative.
That "center" is pulling some severe weight. PSD aligns with the EPP (along with CDS). If you call that center you must work for the mainstream media.
I wouldn’t vote him, but calling him a fascist is pretty far off reality.

Ronaldo is a well-known Portuguese person, hence the mention.

Completely irrelevant, but I live in an area with a lot of Hispanic and Brazilian people, and I overheard this conversation in the grocery store between a mom and her elementary school age daughter, and the little girl said:

Is Miss England's AI round dangerous or progressive?
Reminds me of that time I tried to play a Monster Hunter game, specifically MH3 on the Wii.
I was like "what the fuck are those controls? How am I supposed to hit those remotely efficiently?"... To which people answered with the ridiculous crime against ergonomy called "the Claw Grip". That was the last straw and I decided the game wasn't for me.
It could be seen as "forward thinking" in the sense of being open to and accepting of technological progress.
Personally, I think it's just trend chasing. AI might become deeply useful for many applications someday, but it's only actually useful for a fraction of what people use it for at the moment.
Someone fucking paid the organisers to do this, didn't they.
If someone in that comp has the Fortification they'd prompt the AI to show why it sucks.

Sept. 11 Victims’ Lawsuit Against Saudi Government Can Go to Trial, Judge Rules
More than two decades after victims of the 9/11 attacks began trying to hold the government of Saudi Arabia responsible for helping the Qaida terrorists who carried out the plot, a federal judge has ruled that a civil lawsuit against the kingdom can go to trial.
Despite the efforts of a small group of FBI agents to pursue the case, it was eventually closed by the bureau. The civil lawsuit nearly died in 2016, when President Barack Obama vetoed legislation to carve out an exception to the sovereign immunity of foreign governments and permit the families to sue the Saudi kingdom. Congress overrode that veto, however, allowing the suit to go forward.
President Donald Trump later blocked the families from obtaining classified government documents on the 9/11 investigations, claiming they were state secrets. President Joe Biden later reversed that stance and declassified documents that included reporting confirming that Bayoumi was a part-time agent of the Saudi intelligence service.

It looks like his words on the topic were focused around the preservation of hardware and the "protection" of U.S. officials do to the known fact that U.S. troops do perform tasks that fall outside legal realms. (Whether under order or not). He focused on saying that it opens the door for private entities to investigate the U.S.'s actions abroad which could fracture the Governments ability to sweep shit under the rug. To me it seems to say, if someone does something horrific, whether they were ordered to or not, the governing bodies of the 2 countries can negotiate a resolution that they think is best for their countries regardless of whom was hurt and the direct effects of individuals who were effected.
Like if the U.S. does a missile strike on Iran supposively aiding Israel, and Iran strikes the U.S. military outposts in the area back, the governments can decide it was tit for tat or some shit, not caring about the individuals murdered in the process, as it helps them long term. Allowing this to go through would in theory allow countries like Iran to use apply similar exceptions so the families/friends/companies could go to their court without reguard of their government and if a bases is found they could launch an investigation. Which ultimately if it was in our government, a lower court would find it legally viable to investigate, and as it went up the appeals courts would get pressure until it was shut down, showing the corruption that justice doesn't occur for individuals, but rather just protects the whole or just the government officials involved.

Milei government panics after fresh leak of Karina audio | Buenos Aires Times
An emergency meeting took place at the Casa Rosada on Saturday as President Javier Milei’s government reacted to the leak of another damaging audio recording.
Cabinet officials and top advisers were summoned to Government House for talks on how to address the controversy, which erupted after a domestic streaming outlet released audio recordings that allegedly capture private conversations inside the Casa Rosada.
One of the clips features a voice attributed to Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei. In it, the President’s sister – who is at the centre of a developing corruption scandal – appeals for unity from government officials and says she is working long hours.
The situation has caused deep concern within the ruling party, which is seeking to contain the political fallout and prevent the leaks from escalating.
Rumours abide that further audio and video clips could be published in the following days. Casa Rosada sources privately acknowledge that the situation could worsen in the days ahead.
Government officials are angry at the leak and concerned that their conversations behind closed doors may no longer be private.
Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni branded the leak “an unprecedented scandal.”

The audio recordings, published on Friday by Carnaval Stream, feature Karina Milei urging unity within the government. “We are not going to get into a fight, we have to stand united, just imagine,” she is heard saying.
In another excerpt, the Presidency’s secretary general describes her working day of over fifteen hours. “Because I go in at 8am and leave at 11pm from the Casa Rosada,” she says in the eight-second clip.
Unlike the Spagnuolo audios, Karina’s recordings make no mention of bribes or alleged irregularities at ANDIS. The official only appeals for cohesion within the ruling team.
Presenter Mauro Federico, who made them public, said these clips were just “the tip of the iceberg” and that more recordings could be released in the coming days.

Playing the blame game and shaming people isn't going to suddenly motivate or inspire anybody to do better.
Advancing discourse and raising the consciousness of others on a decentralized platform is doing something, especially in a landscape where public discourse is regularly stunted and manipulated on centralized platforms.
Shit-slinging only makes a mess, but so often that is where discourse goes on most platforms. And to what end? So people can get more hateful and angry? So we can cry ourselves to sleep more frequently because of the state of the world and our collective learned helplessness?
I see people forging more productive discussions and healthy communities on the fediverse and I'm certain there is immense value in that.
You don't recognize that as enough, which is fine, but instead of blaming and shaming others for what you perceive as inaction, I'd suggest including a direct call to action in your postings - if you feel it is relevant to the discussion you are participating in. Bonus points if it is actionable for a wide audience. Or don't, your choice - no judgement here.
Of course actions speak louder than words, but very few people know how to act in the interest of the common good effectively - I'd argue even fewer know how to share their methods and drive, while also being capable of reaching and inspiring others to find their own answers.
We need to have conversations about effective action organically, many times over, instead of being led like the donkey in the carrot and stick metaphor when it comes to facing and solving the problems we face as a society, species, and world.
I strongly disagree.
In a lot of ”very complex” issues, the answers are really simple, and we all know fully well how to solve them.
This is particularly true of the large existential problems we are facing. With climate change, for instance, we have known the solution for a long time: stop burning fossil fuels.
What to do about it has been clear, straightforward and simple all along, but not easy – it would have taken sacrifice to achieve it. We’d have to live more simply, do away with consumerism and have to put things on hold while we find sustainable ways to do them. And we probably would have had to take enormous risks to our own lives, to stop those that wouldn’t aggressively cut down on fossil fuels voluntarily. Without any guarantees of success.
Even transitioning to a solar punk utopia would have been hard, including for those on board from the start.
All while the alternative to the solution is to to have long warm showers at will, enough cheap food that we can get really fat and still throw half of it away, intercontinental air travel that costs less than a bus pass, and so on.
It’s not because we have talked too little or that the discourse hasn’t been good enough that we can’t seem to solve it – our most brilliant minds have talked endlessly for a generation about climate change and how to address it. It’s simply because quitting our fossil fuels addiction is a bitter fucking pill to swallow. And pointless if you do it alone.
The same goes for the ”slow” slide into fascism all over the West, a.k.a. the steady concentration of wealth in the hands of dumber and dumber financial elites. (Not that it’s a separate issue from climate change.)
If you want to beat it, whether peacefully or not, you eventually have to accept that your next meal won’t be guaranteed and that, you might get beaten, arrested or even killed – hungry, tired and cold.
As our American friends have showed us, on this matter, the stakes of disruptive protests are not very appealing – it’s better to continue going to the office, get that paycheck that keeps the lights on, holds off the bank from taking your home and lets the fridge stay full, even if that means paying taxes to and serving those you protest in the weekends and in social media posts.
Tackling these issues does not require exceptional individuals, but a lot of ordinary ones working together, accepting that it’s probably gonna suck really bad. Even so, there is already an abundance of extraordinary people out there, notably Greta Thunberg (of this thread fame).
And yes, it does also take talk to bring those people together, but that talk won’t get you around the hard parts.
First - I must thank you for responding, and I do think we agree a bit more than you think, and I respect your viewpoint.
Collective action is needed to face, address, and solve our problems - especially climate change. It needs to manifest imminently. The solutions to our problems are usually simple, as you suggest, but translating those solutions into physical reality requires collaboration and coherence. We simply aren't meaningfully collaborating in ways that change our collective trajectory, nor are we coherent.
Many believe voting is enough, many argue to me that organizing around established political parties will eventually change them for the better (translating to real change at some point), and many believe that change or progressive policy isn't popular enough to merit consideration. These viewpoints are common in political spaces, and they show me that people don't understand the dire urgency of our collective situation - even if they are politically active. This isn't just about the rise of fascism and individuals like Trump - it's about our fresh water, it's about our agriculture and ability to grow food and eat, it's about whether or not we are able to be comfortable broadly (or even live at all on an increasingly inhospitable planet).
I believe that simply demanding change or simply voting every few years, in the absence of a larger movement, isn't enough. Neither is online discourse enough, nor is local action and collaboration enough.
Every action and person plays a role, but I feel it is critical for more people to understand who currently wields the power to shape our societies, and the radical change that is needed to take back our collective power. One expert or leader isn't going to save us. Even a wave of new, progressive leaders or experts rising to prominence won't be able to save us. Most people think they can still ignore the elephant in the room - out of control capitalism and broken economies - that are 100% beyond reform. We need a clean slate. People are about a half of a century or so too late to seriously advocate for reform, and many don't realize this simple fact - myself included from time to time.
As you loosely suggest, collective action requires us to face uncomfortable truths, and I feel it is important for others to understand that our comfort has been weaponized against us, so the few can profit and lord over us.
Our societies have been shaped around unhealthy and unsustainable systems to enable our comfort; but where we mostly differ is my belief that there are already many solutions all around us, just waiting to be watered and allowed to grow to enable our comfort. The switch just needs flipped, but first people need to realize the switch is even there. And I believe it does take some level of discourse to come to those understandings, despite the many decades that we've already had to discuss these issues. I'm not saying we need to wait for anything, but more productive discourse and greater collaboration will help make these solutions more obvious and clear for the majority of people, myself included.
I don't think many billions need to die for change to manifest, I don't feel like change overshadowed by violence (organized or otherwise) is desirable to wish for or is necessary, and I don't think just talking about what options we have is enough.
There has to be a way forward that doesn't result in total chaos and destruction, and there has to be a way forward beyond accepting that only capitalism and fossil fuels can grant us comfort. It is important to realize that fossil fuel use is an addiction, but I don't believe the comfort we are used to is unsustainable if we put our heads and hands together.
Maybe people do need to become uncomfortable to also come to some of the realizations we generally have, but I don't want to believe that is necessary.
Thank you for this thought through response. I've been meaning to get back to it sooner, but I have been very tired after work and not feeling I have the bandwith the matter deserves. I'm afraid this might not be the evening either, but I found it rude to not respond at all.
One caveat I'd like to enter into the wider discussion is that the distinction between "acting" and "talking" is often more tenuous than either of us have acknowledged thus far.
Either way, to the point where you say we differ most, i.e. "but first people need to realize the switch is even there". From my perspective, what I fail to understand is when you would consider that condition met. Should action be deferred until there's a perfect consensus or at what point do you envision that enough people have come to that realization? Do you consider people embracing ideas like this to be likely to happen, considering real world conditions? Both genuine questions, not rhetorical.
I too am a believer that it is perfectly possible for humans to live good lives outside of the (selectively available) exesses of the fossil fuel paradigm. But I also think it's evident that paradigm will only come to an end through either a decisive and global shift of our collective lifestyles and economies or through the looming risk of societal collapse. At this rate, my frustration is that collapse will come knocking before we're done talking. I'm not as optimistic as you, that we can figure it out, let cooler heads prevail and do things perfectly and achieve a smooth transition. I think it's worth considering that we might stand to lose a lot, whether we commit to change or not; one thing that sometimes get glossed over about fossil fues is that they're damn near magical in terms of what they have enabled us to do.
Maybe we mostly differ in outlook, not predominantly in what we hope for. Because I sure do hope your more optimistic takes prove right.
My apologies for the jumbled and poorly proof-read stream of concioussness, I really need to go to sleep now.
Thanks for responding - I've likely been at a similar level of exhaustion recently. Please also forgive my sloppy response to you the other day and more so this one, where I am pretty ill currently. Take all the time you want to read/respond at your leisure if you desire/if we chat in the future. I'd be happy to see a response in my inbox even 6 months down the line, but honestly, I'm just tickled that anybody responds to me at all after the years of censoring and burying I have experienced over on reddit and other websites. It's been really cool here on the fediverse like that for me and I've grown a lot.
You're absolutely right that fossil fuels are magical. It seems impossible to imagine a world that is even a little bit as advanced as it is now without their heavy use, but we've absolutely grown too accustomed.
It's definitely not for a lack of reporting that the knowledge of the effects of climate change shouldn't be more widespread. I'd like to say that plenty of discourse has absolutely been had on this subject, but mostly in spaces where the conclusions people come to are downright grim and disabling, or firmly rooted in reforming the current system and telling individuals that they need to personally change, instead of shifting focus to the changes we can be making societally. On the flip side (where people are ignorant), average people are generally convinced that everything is fine. The right specifically think it's just the woke liberals trying to waste money on environmental programs led by fake science, likely to make themselves rich. With the making themselves rich part likely being a semi-valid point, and there broadly being a reproducibility crisis in some areas of science being fair to feel and point out as well.
Politically speaking, I predict a failure of the right - at least here in America. The Democrats are essentially in a state of failure already. I can't speak to Europe at all, but I would really hope that Europe gets its shit together with all that's going on. Predicting the fall of MAGA seems delusional even to me at times, but I have to imagine that the house of cards just needs a little wind. Every single thing that Trump/the administration does, it reveals a playbook for anyone curious enough to ask why. I think the reasons to ask that simple question will increase for most people as this continues. And I think ultimately, my optimism comes down to foreseeing the failure/rejection of the USD and a major failure of our tech/AI companies (the latter of which is also starting to become apparent for others).
Regardless of my predictions of the longevity of MAGA and a failure of the USD - are the big corporations, the rich, and those aware of the reality of our systems prepared to devolve into a reality even worse than Hunger Games? That question circles around in my head, and I think those with the most power to shape or influence society in the present order would be unable to manifest a world even that good for themselves. In their dreams, maybe. I think it would be a lot more boring and undesirable for them, best case scenario.
I'm not predicting a world where anything goes smoothly - where reform happens through the current systems or new systems that even remotely mirror the old. I think it's going to be very awkward and messy, at times, as the reality sinks in. I see and feel a whole lot of emotion building up in people, more than I ever have, and I believe the release of this emotion will be palpable.
Regardless of my predictions and hope for Europe to return to sanity, I guess I just want to believe in a world where people aren't so helpless and obedient to the current greedy and shortsighted world order.
If alternative energy sources became more widespread and cheap for regular people to purchase and install, whether through a breakthrough or other miracle that defies policy, it's very likely indicative at that point that our trajectory would be greatly improved. Here in the US, there is a lot of pressure put on our current grid, and I could see this all happening in reaction to high energy costs, stagnating wages, mass layoffs, etc. Obviously household energy use being switched over to partially decentralized green energy e.g. cheap, more efficient solar panels (with sodium-ion batteries possibly) is only one piece of the puzzle to solve.
I tried to speak to your questions in long-form, but here are quick, direct responses:
Should action be deferred until there’s a perfect consensus
Nope, but it would help to see our options laid out for more people to judge what have the most merit. More eyes are needed, but really people need to be more involved in shaping their lives and communities – instead of relying on external authorities.
or at what point do you envision that enough people have come to that realization?
I feel the future will always be more chaotic in practice than anybody can predict. I think focus will be very narrow until the reality widely sinks in for average people living their lives - until people are forced to adapt, likely in reaction to imminent shortages or projected shortages.
Do you consider people embracing ideas like this to be likely to happen, considering real world conditions?
If the status quo broadly continues, even on life support, it seems very unlikely.
This is how you justify inaction. Pretending shitposting is a revolutionary act, what a joke. And almost 40 basement dwellers agree.

Zero coverage on Chris Smalls from the corporate media. Dude was literally tortured by the IOF.
I respect Greta. Don't get me wrong. It's actually amazing that someone that came from a wealthy family did not just end up being another shitlib telling us to stop using plastic straws to save the planet.
It's a testament to her moral compass that it lead her to be radicalized.
If the liberals avoid talking about you and the conservatives hate you then you're doing something right.
But Smalls has always been ignored by the Liberals (unless they could use him as a winning point after the fact). Greta was meant to be a symbol of the liberals form of climate change inaction (but she didn't play ball and was largely dropped). They can't avoid talking about her as easily because the conservatives hate her.
Conservatives hate Smalls but they largely just don't know who he is. So the liberals can ignore him more easily.
Absolutely. The media bias is terrible.
I believe the Freedom Flotilla site posted an interview he did with ABC News where he was able to briefly recounts the horrific racism and assault he endured at the hands of the Israelis. Thanks for raising his name again. More people need to hear what he experienced.
Anyone who hasn’t seen it should go give it a watch and a listen.
Edit: to add to your expanded post. I agree Smalls is largely ignored by liberal media but I think his action and involvement reaches to others that Greta can’t. Greta is also selectively called upon when it suits their bias. We need everyone. He took on extra inherit risks and he deserves every bit of credit and validation for that fact. And I think he’s exposed more Israeli lies about how “tolerant” and “progressive” they are socially. Completely ignoring they have massive problems with racism and homophobia in their ranks and society.

Basically “DiRtY HipPiESssssssss” is their “strongest” counter-arguement. The rest are just proving the point how ridiculous Israel is and how world governments are complicit.

I'm not the guy replying and I agree with you "to a degree". Although I got burned out listening to the "other side" for years. I don't even really listen to "my side" ... or at least I don't think. The right-wing manosphere loves culture wars and complain about people starting culture wars so much to me it's tiring to listen.
I do admire your ability to go through it. I think I probably would have kept listening if the "other side" wasn't in charge of so much and reeking havoc.
I remember someone asking about Jon Stewart and The Daily Show during the Bill Clinton administration if he could keep doing his comedy if times were bad. He said something to the affect of, it works better when times are good. Which always struck me as funny because he flourished even moreso afterwards and was then accused on loving the bad times so much because he profits from it by lazy journalists. Anyways, I ramble a lot >_>.

Honestly I feel this is her playing to her advantages - Israel can (and does) sink ships carrying aid - and while I have utmost respect for the crews and aid volunteers on those ships - Israel doesn't - and having a high profile person on board that Israel knows is bad PR if they kill provides some safety for the whole crew.
I'm confused cause that article says they already departed Barcelona after they had to turn around due to weather. Looks like the link was changed as well.
Wow that is curious. The article itself changed. Don’t they usually include “update” or “changed to include” and a time stamp when that happens? Or am I just not seeing it? When I read it the first time it definitely didn’t talk about leaving port again. If memory serves it said they had to turn around due to weather and it was unclear if or when they’d leave again. Now it says,
“A flotilla of dozens of boats loaded with aid for Gaza departed Barcelona port on Monday evening after stormy weather forced them to return to port earlier, Reuters footage showed.”
Strange. But glad to know they’re underway.

If it does actually happen to you. There will be a thought in your head that that person is still there somewhere and is potentially suffering. Your scientific reasoning and your "good for humanity" will likely not even cross your mind.
All you'll see is someone you love laying on a bed and not able to function. You won't choose the experimental lung because you want to help humanity. You'll do it because even if the doctors say "it will not bring them back" you are desperate for any hope of talking to them again or just seeing their eyes open so you can say goodbye.
The family likely ended it to relieve their own emotional suffering with a false sense of hope. Along with the fear that what they were doing was prolonging the suffering of someone they loved very much.
Interesting that you want to know me better than myself. You are wrong in both that assumption and how/when I (don't) think rational.
Why did you unloaded this purely statistical assumption here anyway?
What a robotic response to someone trying to explain love and losing a loved one to you.
I'm not talking to someone that can't understand empathy. Good luck with that.
I'm a survivor of my beloved who has died twice:
- Once when she had an asthma induced heart attack and her brain was without fresh oxygen for fifteen minutes. Her brain turned into complete mush, while retaining some minuscule bodily functions like breathing, defecation, pupilary reflex. "Persistent vegetative state" used to be the less apt description for it.
- Second time after she has succumbed to pneumonia while in hospice. Her mother, the only next of kin with sway over her fate, a religious nut job, kept her alive for four years.
Where I am trying to go with this is that false hope and selfishness is bad, and if I had the choice, nay SAY back then between keeping her alive or having lungs transplanted into her as an experiment that may establish the procedure to save someone's life in the future, I'd have chosen the experiment every time.
I did not have a say in ending her absolutely pointless continued existence though. And she warned me about her mother's selfishness and narcissism many times before her person as I knew her ceased to exist.
My point is that love is very much often a selfish act, as opposed to compassion, empathy or altruism. And people often make the wrong choices out of selfishness.
Thanks for sharing. And you are absolutely right about love being irrational and at times selfish. My experience of this was somewhat similar. At least in terms of the selfish and irrational love my mom had.
My dad was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (similar to Alzheimer's) and my mom was in denial for far to long about it. Basically preventing getting him any help early on or even a diagnosis. Very religious and trusting that God would do something.
I don't even know when it was that I "lost" him. I don't remember much from that time as I suppressed the memory of those years I was in college. Visiting home and finding out a new piece of him was gone. The last real conversation I remember he asked me "do you hate me?"
He had been asking me if I checked the tire pressure in my car. Whatever was left of him was hyper-focused on worry. He had asked me about 100 times that day. I don't even know what I said to get him to ask me if I hated him. I don't remember. I just remember his face so confused.
I know I told him I loved him. Gave him a hug. But I think that was the last time any form of conversation was possible. So when I walked out the door that day and drove to class is when he "died" to me.
I'm sorry for your loss and can understand that feeling of having no control as you see a person you loved alive but already gone.

Australian ban on fish-shaped plastic soy sauce dispensers a world first
The device known as shoyu-tai (or soy-sauce snapper in Japanese) was invented in 1954 by Teruo Watanabe, the founder of Osaka-based company Asahi Sogyo, according to a report from Japan’s Radio Kansai.
It was then common for glass and ceramic containers to be used but the advent of cheap industrial plastics allowed the creation of a small polyethylene container in the shape of a fish, officially named the “Lunch Charm”.
The invention quickly spread around Japan and eventually worldwide, and it is estimated that billions have been produced.

If it hasn’t already been broken down into microplastics yet and it’s floating around in its whole form, then other organisms that eat fish that size could think it is a fish and then eat it,” Wootton said.
And:

They aren't banning the packets tho.. I can see how the plastic pouches could be better for the environment than the polypropylene fish tho, but certainly not by much.
Man, it sounds like the ultimate first-world problem, but how are they gonna get soy sauce with takeout sushi without single-use plastics? I imagine the people who get takeout sushi and the people who have a bottle of soy sauce in their fridge are largely different groups. Not to mention the people who get takeout sushi for lunch at work. This may degrade the takeout sushi experience for all of South Australia.
These companies use plastic because of its weight and ease of manufacturing and I assume it's also cheaper than glass. The weight may seem a weird metric but when they are shipping billion of them every year it adds up.
If they were forced to change to glass they would definitely increase the price to compensate.
True, but at least glass breaks down into sand, and metal caps don't pollute, they are just unsightly. The plastic cap liners can be made of bioplastics. The energy aspect could be mitigated by mandating 100% renewables in production and transportation, maybe? I know it's not easy to transition to these, but we don't have many options.
As I mentioned in a prior comment, there are companies making bioplastic containers, in commercial production now.
I imagine the people who get takeout sushi and the people who have a bottle of soy sauce in their fridge are largely different groups.
Tbh there's your answer, fix that. Buy some damn soy sauce, they sell it at the most basic stores.
But that doesn't solve the issue for people eating it at a third location, like work, their car, or an unprepared friend's house, can't buy bottles of soy for literally everywhere you go "just in case" and such.
Maybe we still need them for that, but we can also be mindful of our circumstances and prepare/choose appropriately. Would require people to change personally however, so keep waiting lol.
Hell maybe we just make it common for them to sell little 4oz resealable glass bottles of kikkoman at the Chinese spot, then one can still be unprepared and still get the sauce there (though it'd be cheaper if they prepare next time), and whatever sauce isn't used is retainable. Still not perfect since those bottles have plastic tops, but it's something! Maybe make the caps out of hemp plastic for added bonus?
A Spanish company (I imagine there are a few worldwide) develops compostable bioplastic containers using PLA, polylactic acid, the most used plastic in 3D printing, in food safe formulations. I suppose there are limitations on what it can contain, and I don't know if soy sauce is compatible. I know that it's used for single serving olive oil, for example. There are challenges, like storage life, but it's a good start.
I do a lot of 3D printing. Printing PLA things for food storage is not recommended, not because of PLA, but because filaments often have modifiers to enhance certain properties that may not be food safe, and because contact with materials and parts, like extrusion nozzles may add impurities that are probably not food safe..
The hard part about PLA is that while it is biodegradable, it's only in certain conditions/facilities who are set up for it, and it's not very common around the country. I'm all for what the company is doing, and I already do see a lot of PLA products in fast food (like soda cups), but it doesn't mean much if we don't have the facilities to properly dispose of it.
Source: I do a modest amount of 3D printing
How does it biodegrade though?
Just like disintegrate into tiny plastic molecules that we can no longer see but it's still plastic? Or does it degrade as far as becoming the individual components that made up the plastic and can be recycled and used by things in nature?
Just guessing here.
If it breaks down into tiny pieces its not biodegradable. The definition of biodegradable is that its chemically "processed by nature".
BTW, biodegradable does not necessarily mean innocuous. A lot of "natural" elements and compounds are toxic. Something may be biodegraded, and leave mercury as one of the resulting elements, for example.
Sure, but PLA will eventually biodegrade, unlike things like polypropilene or polyethylene, which are incredibly useful precisely because of their imperviousness.
EDIT: I'm willing to bet that PLA IS biodegradable in home settings if the correct method is used, like the Berkeley method, which produces much higher heat than "heap" methods. The Berkley method can produce compost in under a month, via endothermic processes that generate relatively high heat. All you need at home are the compostable materials, and a roughly 1m cube, which can be made out of pallets, for example.

Some people just don’t appreciate the irony of killing turtles with fish-shaped plastic, what can you do
PLA isn't food safe in 3d printing mostly because of layers on a print trap foreign material / bacteria and water can also seep into microscopic gaps into infill and it becomes a breeding ground. I doubt it would be useful for anything squeezy but it might be useful for single use forks and other utensils. But paper / wood can do those things already so I don't see PLA being much use. For sachets I expect the answer is paper with some kind of biodegradable lining which gives a product a shelf life of a few years but does degrade in time.
Also, some "biodegradable" products are only compostable in specialist facilities where it can be shredded and broken down with water / heat / pressure. I think PLA is a bit like that. If you print something out of PLA and stick it out in the garden or even toss it into a compost bin it'll still be there in 10 years although it might be faded, warped & brittle. Maybe it eventually biodegrades but it's not quick enough.
The caveats you express are somewhat valid, but not totally correct. Printing correctly, with a food safe nozzle, path, and PLA formulation, is entirely possible. Simply printing in single layers, with a properly dialed in printer can eliminate your concerns. Medical items and implants are printed out of PLA, albeit with extreme production controls.
However, printing these single use items would be absolutely un-economical. 3D printing shines in short runs, bespoke items, like replacement part that are out of production, or which are very difficult to manufacture by other methods like injection or machining.
Its true that PLA, in unmodified form, has a much higher modulus than PP or PE, so squishiness is out of the question. What I have mentioned before is that I have bought single serve olive oil in PLA containers. From what I could see, these were injection molded and had a film top made from a plastic I never bothered to identify.
These containers were surprisingly elastic when crushed, not as elastic as other plastics, like PET, PP or PE, but much more than I had come to expect from my experience with the material. I'm going to attribute this to molding vs. extruding.
The thing is that mass-produced plastic items (like the plastic fish in question) are typically not produced with 3D-printing, because that would be incredibly slow and inefficient.
Instead, basically some kind of oil or molten mass is pressed into a form and then cooled down/condensed into a solid object. This way you can rapidly produce thousands of plastic items per minute. There is no nozzle involved, and you can do with fewer additives because the mechanical press removes the need for the filament to be so fickly 3D-printable. It can basically do with a bit more crude types of plastics, so you need a bit less additives to make the plastics more mendable.
I never said that these should be produced via 3D printing, it would be both economically unfeasible, and very difficult to achieve food safety, as I have mentioned.
The process you are describing is injection molding, generally used for solid parts. In this case, a variation called blown injection molding, is used. In this case the material is injected into a mold, and then a gas is blown into the interior, to make the material stick to the inner mold, and create a cavity. Nozzles are involved, as they are used to inject the material into the mold. These nozzles can be made specifically to be food safe, with stainless steel, for example.
Nothing is ever produced by them that isn't bought by someone who should have said no.
If companies are to blame then that's the media companies who don't inform the consumers about their responsibilities but instead sell ads for harmful products.
Good luck relying on informed customers when customers are too busy living their lives to keep track of a billion different reasons for why they shouldn't buy one product over another. Also, these are given out at restaurants. Do you recommend refusing to go to a restaurant if they happen to see this dispenser being included there?
How is making sure millions of people are informed and making the "correct" decision every time a better solution than simply restricting on the supply side?
I thought it would have been very relevant.
It looks like a fish lure.
If this is floating around at sea I don't see why other fish (and maybe certain sea birds?) wouldn't think it's prey, and it even has a bright red indicator that makes it easy to spot.
Portability and cost.
I don't support single use plastics but saying no benefit is just willfully ignorant and causes alternatives to fail for missing the point.
Date rapists in shambles
For context, these containers are really popular for storing drugs like GHB
I'm gonna say it:
The problem is not the fish-shaped plastic per se, but the fact that so much of it ends up in the ocean: Why do we still not collect and burn plastics properly? People throw their waste everywhere because there's not enough waste bins in comfortable walking distance. In Vienna, where waste bins are frequent on the streets (you basically never have to walk more than 30 meters to one, no matter where you sit and pause, somehow), there is literally no litter in the environment. No plastic articles or metal cans on the streets. Very rare cigarettes laying around. That's because Vienna has enough trash cans. Many cities don't have that and people have literally no choice to dispose of their trash properly because there's simply no trash cans around, so you either carry your dirty plastic packaging in your backpack and therefore sully your backpack with the grease on the packaging, or throw it into the environment.
Then, there needs to be strict laws that say that all plastic waste has to be burned, not dumped into the environment.
Then, biodegradable bioplastics would also mitigate this problem a lot.
Burning plastic does not mitigate its environmental effects, and infact would increase air pollution and microplastics exponentially if we were to start.
I fully agree with the rest, but burning plastic is definitely not the answer.
i too would like any kind of reasonable source about this, because i've heard very different from a many colleagues who work in this field.
modern incineration sites are very clean and produce no significant air polluting output. at least in modern sites. microplastics is also not an issue with these. the problem is that the trash gets thrown in rivers and forests where it breaks into microplastics, but that isn't an issue if it's all collected and incinerated.
People throw their waste everywhere because there’s not enough waste bins in comfortable walking distance
I see almost daily people throwing trash on the street in front of an empty recycle bin. I think the issue is more about people not giving a shit than convenience of finding a trashcan or keeping stuff in your pocket until you do.
I think the issue is more about people not giving a shit
but do these trash cans have funny jokes on them like these ones:
"mist" is trash in german
Eh. No jokes, no. The most engaging thing I remember seeing around in the city was a "vote" panel for cigarette butts with silly questions; but even that has gone away.
It is unfortunate that we're at this point. Hopefully other places do fare better.
I don't think you even begin to understand what it's like to have billions of people on the earth.
No matter what we do, people will still slip through the cracks and this litter will get out.

AT Protocol - Bluesky PBC Dominance Index
cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/35242959
This page provides a measurement of Bluesky PBC's control over various components of the AT Protocol social network infrastructure. It tracks the distribution of power across key protocol elements, helping to assess the current state of decentralization and identify areas where centralized control may need to be reduced to achieve the protocol's long-term vision of a truly distributed social network.

Generally speaking the police (and in some countries the prison system is a de facto separate police) deals far better with it's members being threatened, especially as their self perception is different and their managements goal is not to make a fucking profit first.
Implementing Portable User Identities with DIDs
Here's an idea to make Lemmy even better: true account portability.
Right now, your Lemmy account and all your content are tied to one server. Moving instances or having one shut down means losing your digital presence. Frankly, the server controls your online identity.
But what if you controlled your identity?
I've opened a discussion on the Lemmy dev GitHub about integrating Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). Think of a DID as a permanent, global ID you own, independent of any server.
Why DIDs are a game-changer for Lemmy:
- Real Account Portability: Move your entire account – posts, comments, followers – to any new instance seamlessly. Your identity travels with you.
- More User Control: Your online presence becomes resilient, managed by an ID you control, not governed by a single server's policies.
- Proven Tech: It works. Protocols like ATProto (Bluesky) successfully use DIDs for portable user identities.
- Full Fediverse Compatibility: We can add DIDs to Lemmy while staying fully interoperable with Mastodon, Kbin, and all other ActivityPub platforms. No breaking changes, just a powerful upgrade.
This is a big step towards a more decentralized and user-controlled fediverse. If you're interested in more control over your digital self, check out the discussion:
**[GitHub Issue: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/5942]**
If you're on other ActivityPub platforms, consider pushing for similar solutions! The more platforms that adopt truly portable identity, the stronger the fediverse becomes.

This is nice in theory but comes with edge cases that are hard to account for. Like, what if you have a post and your new instance defeds the instance the post's community is on? You either have to allow banned content onto the instance or the user loses data, neither of which are acceptable.
This is part of why ATProto's decoupling of user data from app logic is kinda genius and the direction we should go in if we want portable actors in Lemmy/thredi.

Not really, every fediverse platform that people use expects an Object
's id
to be a https URI it can just fetch the resource from. This is part of why FEP-ef61 specifies a way of translating a DID to a https URI. That's not to mention that moving existing actors from their current ID to a DID will cause all sorts of interop problems.
Edit: Also, is this AI-generated? It has all the tells of Gemini output, especially the the issue on Github.
we add a did to objects and keep the id the same. supporting platforms will use did old ones will carry on using id.
did is what ATProto uses this is a step in that direction
joinfediverse.wiki/Nomadic_ide…
As far as I can tell Hubzilla seems to do it by having alts on different instances and then having a way to associate them with each other, so every instance knows that all the alts they're the same user. It's a bit clunky but it avoids as many fundamental changes to ActivityPub because most things under the hood are the same as without nomadic identity and the UI just treats several actors as the same user.
did
field is in addition to the existing actor field, providing a way to gradually transition the protocol to the new way.
It will probably need it's own RFC but let's hear from the devs if they want to do it. (In my experience it's hard to push through the desired change)
You will have better time trying to implement this in piefed
IMO nomadic identity is more important in Mastodon, etc where the fundamental connections of the network are person-to-person - the emphasis is on following other people and having them follow you and that is what determines what content you see. Also being free to leave (and go somewhere else) is a killer feature that centralized social networks cannot offer and nomadic identity really leans into that strength.
In contrast, in the threadiverse you can't follow other people - you join communities. Also when a post is viewed the author is just another piece of meta data, the focus is really on the content. With Mastodon they make a much bigger deal about who is saying the thing, display their avatar much bigger, etc. On Mastodon they're YOUR posts that are strongly tied to you. But here, the posts you make are kiinda more like contributions to a shared wiki (community).
So in PieFed/Lemmy if you need to drop your account on an instance and create a new account on another it's really much less of a loss and not really disruptive at all. You can just import your settings from the old account and continue to post in all the same communities you did before. The need for a nomadic identity just isn't as strong.
Moving communities to another instance, tho, now that would be great. It's on my very long list.
what's described is pretty much that.
FEP-ef61: Portable Objects describes how to use DIDs with ActivityPub. Here's a slightly less technical introduction: codeberg.org/ap-next/ap-next/s…
It's not easy, though. Adding this feature to an existing project will require a lot of work, especially if you don't want to share signing keys with servers. This was discussed in #3100, Lemmy devs are not opposed to FEP-ef61, but they don't plan to work on it.
Also, I don't recommend copying solutions from ATProto, their did:plc
and did:web
are not really "decentralized".
I mean, sure, but LLM issues are currently plaguing open source projects. Curl, for example: gist.github.com/bagder/07f7581…
If someone isn't passionate about something enough to write their own request, why would the devs be passionate about implementing it?

Why not GPG!!??
I've been working on my own idea for what the "fediverse" should be, I'm calling it userless because I want to avoid users in the database and I wanna use GPG as the individuals identity because it already exists and can yes perfectly verify for me who created a post, I'm not sure why we need more than that.
I haven't flushed the whole thing out yet and I plan to hand write proper docs for the protocol.
But GPG has been around since forever. I've been told that it's too hard to use, it's insecure, it's too old. And when I use the thing I just don't agree, there is nothing technically wrong with the product like it should be way more popular.
So Activpub needs an actor with an inbox and outbox to send and receive content. A did is a virtual actor that reroutes to a real actor and collects content across real actors.
Gpg public keys have a dedicated email address field. And if you don't want to share your "real" email address then just make a new one. (edit) Or don't include one.
And the did stores ur profile picture a public key display names bio etc etc.
Yeah that's a pain point I experienced with Gpg armored packets, I couldn't figure out a way to pack in a PFP. Even shrinking it to 64x64 made the public key file feel too heavy. So I just decided profile pics are out of scope and you should just use gravatar.
U could use pgp as the key in the did if the devs want to support it as a cryptography protocol. The did is also used to sign each message similar to pgp. U simply need more functionality than what pgp provides.
I 80% agree. I do wish PGP armored packets had extra fields and if that's an RFC that could be sent to the Gnupg maintainers then gpg would be absolutely perfect but I haven't gotten around to figuring that out. All things considered since GnuPG already exists and it's already installable everywhere and it already works I figured I could just roll with it for userless atleast. I want to use GPG for all user authentication related concerns.
A did is a virtual actor that reroutes to a real actor and collects content across real actors
Where is that virtual actor hosted? If it's centralized, I feel like it defeats the purpose of user-centric identity control. If it's user-hosted, that sounds like GPG with extra, even more inconvenient steps.
Yeah I don't think this is gonna get anywhere when the easiest alternative to controlling your account is to just host your own Lemmy instance, and you can do that literally right now with no changes to Lemmy or the protocol.
It'd be nice for ActivityPub to support optional GPG signatures for those that want to have that level of control. That would get you all the identity verification that this new fangled did stuff gets you, with the added bonus of GPG being a reliable, existing, proven technology that people already know how to support.
DID as a permanent, global ID you own, independent of any server
So there would have to be another server, hosting my identity? Would identities somehow be federated between identity instances?
a json blob
So in a way it's similar to joinmastodon.org/verification ? A two sided reference between identity and profiles?

Proposals for commercial planes to operate with one pilot shelved after critical EU report
Regulator Easa concludes there is not enough evidence it is as safe as flying with two pilots as currently requiredGwyn Topham (The Guardian)
There's a reason redundancy is huge in aviation. All of those redundancies are written in the blood of prior accidents. Same thing with signage in the military.
And year, redundancy for the person flying the plane, or at least monitoring the autopilot is probably a good idea, tough shit for the airlines that want to cut costs.

Yeah, if they'd decrease prices then I honestly wouldn't be that opposed. Flying is very safe, and autopilot is really good. It can even land, though I think this is normally not used if you have a human pilot, but it can do it if it needs to.
We all know that they'd just be cutting employees and probably increase prices though.
The MBAs have taken over the world and are enshitifying entire safety critical industries. They’ve been testing how high they can get the stock price/deaths ratio before someone makes them stop. This is why some industries just shouldn’t be driven by profit, and very near the top of that list is aviation safety.
With the FAA overrun with industry goons and Trump appointees, and aircraft design flaws now acceptable as a cost of doing business, we can expect more regulatory cuts and bits of passenger strewn about the landscape.

with the landing gear there's mechanical backups. the pilot can (destructively) manually drop the gear if there's a failure. same with other backups: on a non-fly by wire aircraft, the pilot can physically move the control surfaces with enough force. even Airbus has a limited mechanical backup (which has been used a couple times! like when all three avionics controllers disagreed and tripped offline.) likewise, even when there's a total loss of power, the pilot can windmill the engines to start. and since any loss of communication dooms the aircraft, it needs to be extraordinarily reliable - and I'm not sure that level of reliability is physically possible, because the underlying communications links (even ACARS) aren't rated for it, nor are the backbone routers of the internet.
finally, I think it is human nature that remote pilots will become complacent if their own lives are not at stake, like their passengers'.
I'm sure it's fascinating research, and may have a place for cargo/repositioning flights, but I can't see that such a scheme could be made reliable enough to risk human lives.

Remember not too long ago when the pilot or copilot went to the bathroom and came back to find the other guy unconscious?
Now think about what happens if there's only one guy.
My mom just told me about British airways flight 5390.
While the aircraft was flying over Didcot, England, an improperly installed windscreen panel separated from its frame, causing the captain to be partially ejected from the aircraft. He was held in place through the window frame for 20 minutes until the first officer landed at Southampton Airport.
Whoever tried to pass this one pilot thing should be fired.
Airplanes CAN also fly on a single engine (that is, if it's a 2 engine one) but that doesn't mean that it should
Ideas like these always come from people who forgot what were actually doing and what the actual priorities are
The priority is to move people safely from point a to point b. The priority is NOT to make a tiny select few rich people even richer
The priority is to move people safely from point a to point b. The priority is NOT to make a tiny select few rich people even richer
Clearly you haven't been paying attention for the last 40 years. The priorities for all services and industries have changed.
People flying planes?
First put Copilot as the copilot. Then yeet the pilot as well.
3 LLMs duking it out with people in the cargo hold of a winged tin cylinder seems like a genius idea.
Remember that plane where the 1st officer locked the captain out of the cockpit and flew the plane into a mountain?
I believe the rule now is that for a pilot to exit the cockpit, a cabin crew member has to be in the cockpit, to prevent this sort of thing.

Israel soon will halt or slow aid to northern Gaza as military offensive grows
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel will soon halt or slow humanitarian aid into parts of northern Gaza as it expands its military offensive against Hamas, an official said Saturday, a day after Gaza City was declared a combat zone.
The decision was likely to bring more condemnation of Israel’s government as frustration grows in the country and abroad over dire conditions for both Palestinians and remaining hostages in Gaza after nearly 23 months of war.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, told The Associated Press that Israel will stop airdrops over Gaza City in the coming days and reduce the number of aid trucks arriving as it prepares to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people south.
Israel on Friday ended daytime pauses in fighting to allow aid delivery, describing Gaza City as a Hamas stronghold and alleging that a tunnel network remains in use. The United Nations and partners have said the pauses, airdrops and other recent measures fell far short of the 600 trucks of aid needed daily in Gaza.
“We left because the area became unlivable,” Fadi Al-Daour, displaced from Gaza City, said as vehicles piled high with people and belongings rolled through a shattered landscape. “No one is searching, and there are no journalists to film. There is nothing.”

These past few years have shown how badly humanity hasn’t truly shaken off its barbaric nature. I’m in my mid-40s and I grew up during a time where yes, there were still some issues, but on the whole it felt like humanity was finally starting to evolve, but now it’s the same shit that’s happened across the centuries just with a different veneer.
The fact we constantly repeat our shortcomings should have been a clue in and of itself, but I though that technical advances would also further us too instead of just coming up with more efficient ways to be assholes.
Israelis and Palestinians protest for peace as journalist Mariam Dagga's family mourns her death
NAZARETH, Israel (AP) — In the streets of Nazareth, Israeli and Palestinian activists wore stickers replicating the ‘Press’ insignia emblazoned on flak jackets and other clothing worn by journalists as they rallied for peace in Gaza. Their message: Journalism is not a crime.
A throng of people wearing blue-and-white ‘Press’ stickers — used to identify journalists in dangerous areas — gathered in the Israeli town on Friday to call for an end to the war in Gaza, which has killed nearly 200 journalists among tens of thousands of others. Some held photos of Palestinian journalists killed.
’’Don’t assassinate the truth,” read a banner the protesters held. Some banged on empty pots to symbolize hunger in the Gaza Strip and protest the killing of journalists.
Mariam Dagga, a 33-year-old who freelanced for The Associated Press, was among the war’s victims. She and four other reporters were killed earlier this week when Israeli forces struck Nasser Hospital in the Gaza town of Khan Younis, along with 17 other people.
UK refuses to invite Israeli government officials to London arms fair over the war in Gaza
LONDON (AP) — The U.K. has barred Israeli government officials from attending the country’s biggest arms fair over growing concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The decision does not cover representatives of Israeli defense contractors, who will be allowed to attend the DSEI UK exhibition, scheduled for Sept. 9-12 in London. The event was formerly known as Defense and Security Equipment International.
“The Israeli Government’s decision to further escalate its military operation in Gaza is wrong,” the British government said in a statement. “As a result, we can confirm that no Israeli government delegation will be invited to attend DSEI UK 2025.”
The decision comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer in July announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state unless Israel takes steps to end the crisis in Gaza, agrees to a ceasefire with Hamas and commits to a long-term peace agreement. Britain previously barred sales to Israel of any arms that could be used in the nearly 23-month war in Gaza.

This press release of theirs is another example of the traditional technique in British Modern Politics (and not only there, but in Britain using that kind of thing is a fucking art form) of presenting a miniscule barely bothersome action on something that goes along the direction the public wants as a massive action in that direction whilst in fact not really doing anything in any way effective in the direction that the public wants.
