New Mexico becomes first state to offer no-cost child care to every family

New Mexico will become the first state in the nation to guarantee no-cost child care for all families, regardless of income, when the program launches Nov. 1.

The universal child care program will provide significant financial relief to families across the southwestern state.

New Mexico's Early Childhood Education and Care Department estimated families will save $12,000 on average per child each year.

The state is also launching efforts to increase the available childcare options, including launching a campaign to recruit licensed and registered home providers and establishing a $12.7 million low-interest loan fund to construct, expand, and renovate child care facilities, with an additional $20 million requested in the state's Fiscal Year 2027 budget.

Supreme Court blesses racial profiling by ICE and don't explain the decision

In greater Los Angeles, the Trump administration’s goal of deporting millions of people is being operationalized through often violent raids that target people who appear Latino while waiting for the bus or working in low-wage jobs. A shorter way to say this is racial profiling of low-income people. Today, the Republican-appointed justices on the Supreme Court blessed this approach.

The ruling, on the so-called shadow docket, is yet another in a long string of cases since the spring in which the GOP appointees have allowed the Trump administration’s power grabs. From firing federal workers and agency heads to deporting people to dangerous countries without due process, the court’s majority has waived aside precedent, clear statutory language, and even constitutional protections in order to give this president increasing power. This time, the pesky thing standing in the way was the Fourth Amendment.

U.S. Gov't & Tech Giants Unite Against ISP Piracy Liability Ruling at Supreme Court

cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/37157681

The battle over a $1 billion piracy judgment against internet provider Cox Communications has reached the Supreme Court, where the company receives broad support. Amicus briefs from the U.S. government, major tech companies, and various other parties, warn that the current ruling creates a dangerous precedent. They argue that the Fourth Circuit ruling, which makes passive service providers liable for their customers' actions, invokes broad liability and puts people's internet access at risk.

in reply to Pro

So my question is, do we want ISPs to be liable? If they are, they will be more likely to cut alleged pirates off. If they aren't, then a legal door is open for the rights holders to go after individuals directly.
in reply to cerebralhawks

about as much as the telephone company is liable for what you say.

arguing over the implementation of a broken system is pointless anyway, they are gonna do whatever is in the shareholders best interest; always.

in reply to cerebralhawks

Absolutely not. They should be common carriers with zero weighting and even zero knowledge about what transits their network.
in reply to frongt

Agreed. This whole lawsuit is one giant looming catastrophe. If ISP's are found liable for copyright infringement, that will be the effective end of the open internet.
From there, I can already see the argument taking shape that ISP's, telco's, and account holders are all effectively accomplices in all sorts of crimes facilitated using communications networks.
in reply to cerebralhawks

Oh, hell no.

You do not want the ISPs to be the cops. They are a neutral provider that gives basic Internet access. If that access is to be terminated, it should be done by a court, and there should be a police case.

Having the ISP's doxx the users is an unfavorable but more proper answer. But every one of those should be a court case at least. Innocent until proven guilty, not just shut down because they think you might be guilty.

in reply to cerebralhawks

Imagine the utilities company that provides homes with water being liable for somebody getting drowned in a bathtub ...

They really don't understand piracy at all. Piracy has got plenty of people into purchasing more products and supporting the economy.

Ohio Chaplain’s Case Shows How 9/11-Era Terror Rules Could Empower Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

cross-posted from: reddthat.com/post/49696960

  • Evidence: The government seeks to deport an Ohio chaplain, but its case has come under scrutiny from supporters and legal advocates.
  • Support: The U.S. paints the chaplain as a link in terrorist organizations, but in Ohio, families laud his work at a children’s hospital and in the community.
  • Test Case: If the government secures its quest for deportation, experts say the case could empower the Trump administration’s mass deportation blueprint.

Jeffrey Epstein & JPMorgan: How the Largest U.S. Bank Enabled the Sexual Predator's Crimes

Seg1 epstein3

Amid growing pressure for the Trump administration to release the full Jeffrey Epstein files, a New York Times investigation reveals how the country’s largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, enabled Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation and profited from its ties to him. The exposé is based on more than 13,000 pages of legal and financial records. The Times reports JPMorgan processed more than 4,700 transactions for Epstein totaling more than $1.1 billion, including payments to some of the women who were sexually trafficked. The bank “arranged for Epstein to be able to pay those victims, both in the U.S. and in Eastern European countries and in Russia,” says David Enrich, deputy investigations editor for The New York Times. Epstein “operated in large part because he had unfettered access to the global financial system. And for many years, it was JPMorgan that was providing him with that access.”

I Hate My Friend: The chatbot-enabled Friend necklace eavesdrops on your life and provides a running commentary that’s snarky and unhelpful. Worse, it can also make the people around you uneasy.

archive.is link

The AI-powered Friend pendant is now out in the world. If you live in the US or Canada, you can buy one for $129.

The smooth plastic disc is just under 2 inches in diameter; it looks and feels a little like a beefy Apple AirTag. Inside are some LEDs and a Bluetooth radio that connects you (through your iPhone) to a chatbot in the cloud that’s powered by Google’s Gemini 2.5 model. You can tap on the disc to ask your Friend questions as it dangles around your neck, and it responds to your voice prompts by sending you text messages through the companion app. You can reply to these messages with your voice or via text to keep the conversation going.

It also listens to whatever you’re doing as you move through the world, no tap required, and offers a running commentary on the interactions you have throughout your day. To perform that trick, the device has microphones that are always activated.

If the idea of a microphone-packed wearable that’s always listening to your conversations raises privacy concerns for you, just know that you’re not alone. If your experience is anything like ours, wearing the Friend will likely earn you the ire of everyone around you. Curiously, you might even end up being bullied by the chatbot itself.
