Just tried roleplaying with AI chatbots

Hey everyone!

So, I’ve been messing around with a bunch of AI chatbots lately—Character AI, and more recently Soulove AI. It’s wild how far they’ve come. They’re not just text chat anymore—you can do voice, images, even video with some of them.

I’ve been using them to create characters for my stories and let them interact in the chat. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s surprisingly helpful for plot ideas. And yeah… I’ve even ended up debating and arguing with myself through these AIs, lol.

Anyone else here tried using AI chatbots like this? I’d love to hear about your experiences, funny moments, or even disasters. 😅

Disney investors seek clarity on Jimmy Kimmel's suspension

Kimmel returned to the air Tuesday night, six days after his remarks about the accused killer of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

Several investors in Walt Disney DIS.N on Wednesday asked the media giant to share documents about its decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel‘s show last week for inspection.

Kimmel returned to the air Tuesday night, six days after his remarks about the accused killer of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk provoked social media outrage and pressure from the Trump administration.

In a letter to the company, lawyers for the American Federation of Teachers, U.S. labor federation AFL-CIO, and Reporters Without Borders requested Disney to turn over records related to Kimmel‘s suspension.

The demand seeks to probe potential wrongdoing, mismanagement and fiduciary breaches by the Disney board and its leadership, according to the letter.

There's something profoundly depressing when investors ask why they lose money when Trump wipes his oversize ass with the Constitution, rather than Congress doing everything it can to prevent it happening.

You have to be in control of a system, to change a system.

If every American yanked their money out of the stock market until Congress got rid of trump, we'd actually have a pretty good chance.

French man held in Saudi Arabia for over a year after Hajj scam

A French man detained in Mecca last year is facing a Saudi counter-terrorism court on charges stemming from a visa scam that he fell prey to while attending Hajj, a UK-based rights group has said.

Alqst said on Thursday that Abdelfattah, a father of three, is being tried on the charges of “illegal entry to Mecca” and “failing to report a helper”, as well as "insulting the government" and "praising prosecuted individuals".

Detained for more than a year, Alqst said Abdelfattah has been tortured repeatedly, including an attack in December in which six masked guards beat him, handcuffed him and placed him in solitary confinement for a week.

In July, while speaking on the phone to his wife, he was beaten by guards until he lost consciousness.

Sempre presente!
Ma a un ritmo finalmente… umano. 🚲🌱

More languages

Czechoslovak dubs are some of the best. They had a small selection of titles to do, and would often recut title sequences not to expose people to foreign languages. I really like the lettering in the (I hate that Czech TV ruined it by editing "Czechoslovak" to "Czech" with a digital box overlay and the original is nowhere to be found; however I get that they didn't really have time for sourcing the textless original and doing some arts and crafts when there was a flood of foreign material in the 90s).

They sometimes replaced the song, this time with the Johan and Peewit intro and it slaps.

Whizzing up some Centennial Incognito

Anyone else tried Incognito? I have tried it before but didn't mix it properly, so I think most of it dropped to the bottom of the FV in a lump. This time giving it a proper stir with hot wort seems to have dissolved it better. I haven't tried the beer yet.
in reply to Naich

It’s intriguing to me. For professionals (even or especially small ones) the loss of product to vegetable matter is a significant concern especially in jurisdictions that are taxed on the wort rather than the product. I’ve heard of 20% or more loss, but that’s got something to do with being a tiny 3hL system and brewing triple IPAs. Still, it is expensive to throw away so much product.

One of the problems, I think, with nonalcoholic beer is that some of the compounds we like best in hops are not water soluble and depend on the alcohol to pull them out of the dry hopping. I wonder if this product changes that calculus.

in reply to CompactFlax

Even if they are extracted into this fluid (for example, with polyalcohols, maybe just sugars), they still might crash on "fermentation" of nonalcoholic beer, whatever process is used. Maybe if these are strictly nonfermentable polyalcohols and at the same time highly soluble in various conditions (maybe even at 0C fermentation, as one of possible production ways), this might work indeed.

China Road Trip Exposes List of Uninvestable Assets in the West

They knew China had raced ahead in sectors like batteries and “everything around energy,” but seeing how big the gap was firsthand left them wondering how European and North American competitors can even survive, Talia Rafaeli, a former investment banker at both Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Barclays Plc who’s now a partner at Kompas VC.

Planet A Ventures, a Berlin-based VC, has decided that investments in Western startups spanning battery manufacturing and recycling, electrolysers, solar and hardware for wind are no longer viable, says Nick de la Forge, general partner and co-founder of the firm. He says before the trip he’d suspected China was way ahead; but after going there, those sectors are now “strictly off the list.”

Yair Reem, a partner at Extantia Capital, says the trip has already led his firm to halt investments in Western battery cell manufacturers. Instead, they’ll look for ways to collaborate with Chinese firms across supply chains. When it comes to battery manufacturing in the West, China’s dominance means it’s now “game over,” according to Reem.

Ashwin Shashindranath, a former Macquarie Group managing director who’s now a partner at Energy Impact Partners, says what he saw on the trip made it “very clear” that Western investors live “in a bubble” in their misconceptions about China.

China Sets First Absolute Emissions Cut Target for 2035, Falling Short of Paris Path

cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/42916278

China has pledged for the first time to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in absolute terms, committing to reduce economy-wide net emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035, “striving to do better.” President Xi Jinping announced the target in a video address to a high-level climate summit in New York convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the General Assembly.

[...]

Experts welcomed the structural shift to an absolute cut but judged the ambition insufficient for a 1.5°C pathway. “Anything less than 30% is not aligned with 1.5 degrees,” said Lauri Myllyvirta of the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Greenpeace East Asia’s Yao Zhe said the plan “still falls short,” even for tempered expectations. Belinda Schäpe, a China policy analyst at CREA, framed the pledge as politically cautious and argued China’s clean-energy boom could still deliver reductions of 30% or more by 2035 if current trends hold. In her words, today’s announcement should be viewed as the floor, not the ceiling.

Apple calls for changes to anti-monopoly laws and says it may stop shipping to the EU

Apple has called for the European Commission to repeal a swathe of technology legislation, warning that unless it is amended the company could stop shipping some products and services to the 27-country bloc.

The Silicon Valley company hit out in a submission to the commission’s review of the three-year-old anti-monopoly legislation, which is intended to regulate the gatekeeper power of the largest digital companies including search engines, app providers and messaging services.

It said it had already delayed the launch of features such as live translation through AirPods and mirroring iPhone screens on to laptop because of the act’s demands for interoperability with non-Apple products and services.

“The DMA means the list of delayed features in the EU will probably get longer, and our EU users’ experience on Apple products will fall further behind,” it said. Apple added that Brussels was creating unfair competition as the rules were not applied to Samsung, the largest smartphone provider in the EU.

Big tech only cares about money, something that makes them very predictable. Very high fines and banning costs them money, so they will comply to all demands to avoid. Easy as that 😀
in reply to IndustryStandard

They're just bluffing, they'd lose more money by withdrawing from the EU market, than finding ways to comply. Greedy corporations are easy to predict, since their only goal is money and they don't do things "out of principle".

Australian Under 16 media ban is censorship by stealth and data harvesting by law

The comments around the under 16 media ban seem to be missing a salient point.

In order to determine if a user is under 16, you need to determine that for every single user .. including you!

This means that your personal data will be harvested in order to determine if you are over 16 or not.

in reply to Onno (VK6FLAB)

Ummm, they already harvest your personal data to that extent. I guess some of the really paranoid might be caught in the wider net but honestly if you're that paranoid then you're probably not using social media directly anyway. The media too is bringing up this point in that it's a privacy concern but the internet is far less private than 99% of people think anyway, it's a data security concern but not a privacy concern.

Now, the recent age-checking for porn introduced by the e-Karen without any parliamentary or even media debate, that's something to be concerned about.

How could I order a package without my parents finding it?

Hey!

There's some things I am planning on ordering, and I'd like to get them delivered without my parents knowing.

The things in question are some 23w CFL bulbs, e27 sockets, PC fans and a power strip.
I was originally planning on just buying them in person, but literally no shops near me have them.

I can't actually find them anywhere but the american version of amazon -- my country's (Ireland) version of amazon doesn't have them.

I asked a few friends if I could send the things to their house, and get it through them, but all of them said no.

in reply to throwaway

If you’re in the US, you should get the number for your post office and ask about doing a parcel intercept. I believe you’ll need ID that puts you at the address like a license.

In his stirring final speech to a United Nations General Assembly, Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday called for an international armed intervention to end Israel’s nearly two-year genocide in Gaza.

“We need a powerful army of the countries that do not accept genocide,” Petro, who is in his last year in office and is limited under Colombian law to a single presidential term, told world leaders gathered in New York. “That is why I invite nations of the world and their peoples more than anything, as an integral part of humanity, to bring together weapons and armies.”

“We must liberate Palestine,” he asserted. “I invite the armies of Asia, the great Slavic people who defeated Hitler with great heroism, and the Latin American armies of Bolívar.”

“We’ve had enough words; it’s time for Bolívar’s sword of liberty or death,” Petro argued, referring to the 19th century Latin American independence hero Simón Bolívar.

Qiao Collective is explicitly pro-PRC, but this is an extremely comprehensive write-up of the entire background of the events, the timeline of reports, and real and fake claims.

I also recommend reading the UN report and China's response to it. These are the most relevant accusations and responses without delving into straight up fantasy like Adrian Zenz, professional propagandist for the Victims of Communism Foundation, does.

Tourists also go to Xinjiang all the time. You can watch videos like this one on YouTube, though it obviously isn't going to be a comprehensive view of a complex situation like this.

Akshually, it's CPC! 🤓

Well, yes, actually, it is CPC. The standard formatting of communist parties is "Communist Party of X." This is the international standard, the CPC goes by CPC and not by CCP as CCP is more nationalist than internationalist.

And no, I'm not a CPC member, as cool as that would be to be one of those 100 million members, though I do organize (lightly so far) with a communist party in my country.
