Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its technology in mass surveillance of Palestinians
Microsoft has terminated the Israeli military's access to technology it used to operate a powerful surveillance system that collected millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls made each day in Gaza and the West Bank, the Guardian can reveal.Microsoft told Israeli officials late last week that Unit 8200, the military's elite spy agency, had violated the company's terms of service by storing the vast trove of surveillance data in its Azure cloud platform, sources familiar with the situation said.
The decision to cut off Unit 8200's ability to use some of its technology results directly from an investigation published by the Guardian last month. It revealed how Azure was being used to store and process the trove of Palestinian communications in a mass surveillance programme.

UK will not give diplomatic protection to its citizens on Gaza flotilla
The British government has said it cannot offer diplomatic protection to its citizens onboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, as Italy and Spain send ships to accompany it following an Israeli attack on Wednesday morning.
Mathilda Mallinson, MEE's correspondent onboard one of the flotilla's boats, said the British Foreign Office told her mother it was "unable to offer" diplomatic protection.
Diplomatic protection is action the UK can take against another country for injury caused to a British national, or their property, in violation of international law.
One boat Israel apparently bombed in Tunis, Alma, is a British vessel and flies the British flag. At least 13 people on the flotilla are British citizens.
Spain and Italy have sent naval ships into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy dispatched a frigate on Wednesday after an Israeli drone attack on the flotilla in international waters.
I have to wonder. Never having tried to enter an active war zone.
Is it in any way normal for the UK to give protection to any citizens intentionally doing so. Especially in advance of the event.
ATM the boats are in international waters. Or Tunisas water for smee attacks. So diplomatic protection has little to do with it. Bombing foreign registered boats outside your own waters is an act of war. So the UK and Tunisia should have diplomats screaming at them. At the least. And clearly has a duty to aid them in international waters.

How to work out
Hi all,
I recently found out that as a part of my job I get access to a small gym in the building. I think it has your basic cardio equipment and some other stuff for building muscle (but small enough I don't think there is equipment to do stuff like dead-lifts or whatever in there).
I don't know anything about working out really, but I could stand to lose some fat, which draws my attention to the treadmill that they have. I am not so concerned about building muscle and everything that involves.
I have mostly neglected going to gyms for 3 reasons.
- They are usually out of my way
- I don't usually have the time
- I don't want to spend what they charge
All three of these are now non-factors now that I have found out I have access to this one.
I would be using it twice a week as that is how often I am actually at the location.
So my question is, since it's not really something I have ever looked at - if I want to lose a bunch of fat, what do I do? I can try to diet first off, and I am glad to take suggestions on what worked for other people in that regard, but more so I just don't know how long or how fast I should run, what equipment is good for this otherwise, or really anything about using a gym.
Please note that the facility is self-serve and has no staff - they just have cleaners come in each day to clean it, the rest is up to you. I do not have the money to spend on something like a personal trainer, and the location doesn't offer such things as well given its self-serve nature.
Thank you.
Fat is energy. If you use more energy than you put in, you lose weight. If you use less energy, you gain weight.
Losing fat is like putting gasoline in your car. If you put in 2 gallons but you only drive for 1 gallon, then there will be gas left in the tank. Likewise your body will turn excess energy into fat. W hen you use more energy than you put in, your body will start burning fat.
If you want to lose fat hit the biggest muscle group which uses the most energy (your legs)

The ICE Shooter’s Motive
The deadly sniper attack on a Dallas ICE facility this morning seemed straightforward, with “ANTI-ICE” engraved on unspent shell casings recovered from the scene, per the FBI. But after interviewing several of the alleged shooter’s former friends, the picture isn’t so clear.
Within minutes of the shooting, FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X: “While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical [sic] motive behind this attack (see photo below).”
On the off-chance the shooting wasn’t what it looked like, I reached out to people who knew the gunman, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. Three who knew him since at least middle school agreed to speak to me on the condition that I not name them, corroborating their friendship with photos and other records. Their accounts paint the picture of someone with a vaguely libertarian bent who despised both major parties and politicians generally (including Trump) but who didn’t engage with politics beyond that. He preferred edgy humor, video games and the message board 4chan, all of which he became increasingly steeped in as he withdrew from social life as well as their own friendships several years ago, they said.
None of his former friends believed that the “ANTI-ICE” inscription could possibly be sincere, feeling such a serious political statement was anathema to who Jahn was. His humor was deeply ironic, often offensive and aggressive to the point of alienation.
“He was most certainly an edgelord, an irony guy,” one friend said. (Edgelord is online-speak for someone who likes to espouse edgy, nihilistic views). Asked about the inscription on the bullet, the friend said: “Josh was an edgelord who wanted someone to get blamed. I think he tried his best to write something goofy … to rile people up.”

in reply to Cowbee [he/they] • • •I am not so sure if the dissolution was really avoidable. I like to use the DDR as a comparison, as it does resemble the USSR post-war pretty well, due to the USSR pretty much dismantling factories in their occupation zone to compensate their own losses only to stop that as they realized the other occupation forces were strengthening their own zones and so reverting their course, leaving the then formed DDR in a similar state as the government that spawned in.
During the time of its existence, the DDR suffered from supply shortages to the point where the Trabant, the most driven car in the DDR had a chassis made out cotton-based thermoset. Yet at the same time government paranoia was at it's peak, where the MfS (the East German equivalent of the KGB) coerced and blackmailed citizen to aid in the espionage and recruit them as informants against their neighbours, just to collect as much information on their citizen as possible in case they are suspected to be traitors as more and more people tried to flee the extreme poverty they had to live with. Yet the party was riddled with corruption, as the last generation of DDR politicians realized as the old ones resigned and allowed a new wave to take the lead, seeing the actual numbers of the debt of the government and the state of the country had to face with, even though the older generation of politicians were initially against Gorbachev's Perestroika plan.
I think this level of hidden debt, corruption and paranoia/secrecy was the reason why Gorbachev claimed that the Chernobyl disaster caused the downfall of USSR, as it was the epitome of what plagued the whole nation ever since the war. Nobody wanted to speak out the truth for their fear of their status or even their lives, as they either get painted as a saboteur or gets silenced by those who would be targeted as well if the truth came out. Getting rid of that issue would be nothing less of a government dissolution, because no one could be really trusted.
Cowbee [he/they]
in reply to Blemgo • • •It definitely could have been avoided, anti-corruption campaigns could have been had, and even without them most people still supported socialism. The economy was slowing, but not crashing. Perestroika was terrible, no doubt, though. Further, you do exaggerate the level of corruption, the USSR had less wealth disparity than capitalist countries while maintaining positive and rapod economic growth.
The dissolution happened for a number of reasons, but it didn't collapse under that weight, it was killed off while under it.
Blemgo
in reply to Cowbee [he/they] • • •It might be that my comparison wasn't the most accurate, since my main insight in the USSR is through the DDR, which was mainly a pawn in the face off between the superpowers at that time, and thus was a hotspot for tensions around that time. And I do believe that the wealth disparity wasn't as extreme as in capitalist countries, yet it says little about what the actual average living conditions were compared to other countries. Also, corruption doesn't always have a wealth disparity as a result. After all, people can also get corrupt due to self-preservation, which I think is most evident under Stalin's later rule, after his wife committed suicide.
Yet I can't really agree that it was "killed off" during its downfall, as I have my doubts that it would have survived much longer than it did without its subnations separating from it. The only way I could imagine it surviving would have been if they "licked their own wounds" after the war, so to speak, recuperate from their losses instead of its rapid militarisation that it gone through to keep up with the USA in order to win a dick measuring contest.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they] • • •Yes, after the reign of Stalin, where Khrushchev took over, the USSR deescalated the Cold War, yet it was the actions taken by Stalin's regime that let the conflict start to begin with, with the USSR not retreating from Iran as the other Allied Forces did, the threat of force in the Turkish Straits crisis, comparing Churchill to Adolf Hitler and breaking the Yalta Agreement by meddling with the 1947 Polish elections.
Also, the article seems to be paywalled, so I have to see when I get around to reading it.
Cowbee [he/they]
in reply to Blemgo • • •Here's a non-paywalled version. Either way, no, you're entitely off. The USSR began its life has heavily invaded and sanctioned by countries like the US. The USSR would have rather had time for peaceful development, but the US Empire could not allow an alternative. Additionally, Churchill was similar to Hitler, the two admired each other and Churchill was responsible for mass famine in India. He had this to say about it:
If anything, it was the west that wanted the Cold War from the beginning.
