Cooperative Social Networks @ Berlin Fediday
One of the current areas of interest for the Social Web Foundation is the use of cooperative legal structures for Fediverse services. Federation gives all of us a choice in services we use, without losing connection to our friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. These services can compete on technology, but they also provide us a chance to choose the kind of governance we want — individual or family servers, commercial services, or benevolent-dictator-for-life (BDFL) admins. The SWF thinks cooperatives may be a useful option for this governance mix.
Co-ops are a legal structure where users and/or workers co-own the organisation, and use participative, democratic processes for making decisions and running the services. Studies show that cooperatives in grocery stores or utility companies often provide better service and lower prices than their commercial, for-profit competitors. Applying this model to Fediverse servers has had mostly positive results, with social.coop, data.coop and cosocial.ca as sustainable examples.
I (Evan) will be speaking about the potential of cooperatives for Fediverse service governance at Berlin Fediday 2025, this coming Saturday, October 4. 2025 is the International Year of the Cooperative, which makes it a great time to talk about Fediverse cooperatives. I’m a fan of cooperatives; cosocial.ca is my home Fediverse service for personal use. I’ll be discussing some of SWF’s ideas to take the learnings of existing coops on the Fediverse and expand them to new users.

Three weeks after Israel attempted to assassinate Hamas’s lead negotiators in a series of airstrikes on the group’s offices in Doha, Qatar, President Donald Trump hailed the public announcement of his 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza as “potentially one of the great days ever in civilization.” The framework was drafted in coordination with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top adviser, Ron Dermer, and spearheaded by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Several Arab and Muslim states also contributed. No Palestinian officials from Hamas or any other faction, including the internationally-recognized Palestinian Authority, were consulted in crafting the plan.

What language/culture/origin is your name from? Do you like your name or names from that culture? Have you ever met someone with a same name (either the given or family name)?
(Don't share your real name, obviously)
Okay so, wall of text warning:
My legal name is a Chinese name, three characters.
Family name (one character) is said/written first, then the given name (two characters for me... and I assume for most people).
Its a very interesting name, and overall naming system, each character has meaning, well other than the family name which I don't think it really means anything.
My older brother's first character is the same as mine, only the second character is different. (It's [Family Name] + [Character A] + [Character B], Character A is the same.)
I have never met anyone with my exact name, well to be fair, being in the US made those odds even rarer. I did meet someone with the same family name in a US school, and they also had the same DoB as me, which was very weird coincidence.
But my name is so rare in the US, if it ever got leaked, that's practically a unique identifier.
When I look at my name, idk I kinda feel a sense of antiquity. I have a genology book and the pages are falling apart, I had to scan it and made a .pdf from it. I mean those names are from hundred of years ago, I guess they had to keep remaking/rewriting those books because I doubt something from pre-1800s would've survived till now. It makes modern tech feel so futuristic when I think about it, I mean, that geneology book could potentially live om forever, without any deterioation unlike a book.
But simultaneously, when I look at my name, it kinda reminds me of my parent's emotional abusive and neglectful behaviors. Ugh, idk, feels so conflicted about it. I really wanna ask questions about the past, but we aren't really on speaking-terms anymore.
When people ask my name, it's always just so awkward, since... the pronounciation is totally foreign to them. I kinda wanted to choose an English name for simplicity here in the US, but like... I didn't pick one when I was younger and I think its kinda too late to use one now. Idk what name to even choose.

One of the best parts of Cyberpunk (as a theme) is the ubiquitisation of cultures
I'm talking about how pockets and islands of cultures pop up everywhere within these settings, how Cyberpunk as a whole does away with national borders and lets everyone from everywhere and anywhere suffer equally.
And we've kinda' missed the mark on that, as now culture is instead becoming eclectic. We don't have pockets of cultures, we are steadily pushing toward having a single culture, a mass of haphazard associations and little comprehension of meaning.
FRYD likes this.
I don’t think we’re heading towards a monoculture. Actually much like Cyberpunk, you’ll find the most striking pockets of unique cultures in small spaces relevant to whatever group is there. Go to a skatepark and you’ll think the people there are talking another language. Go to a concert or rave and you’ll see all kinds of different subcultures and fashion styles depending on what kind of music is playing. Even here on Lemmy you see different cliques and subcultures. There are astrology conferences and Beyblade tournaments and everything in between. Theres also always little pockets of ethnic groups, foreign to where they are, all over the world. I love finding different groups and the things they orbit around and the lingo they develop and the ideas and values they have. They’re not as easy to find as they are in a video game, but they’re out there and it’s a much more rich experience to get to know those people than in a video game.
I can’t describe it well because I’m not an anthropologist, but the changes in the larger zeitgeist over the years I’ve been around seems to be pretty normal too. I don’t think there’ll ever be some kind of monoculture, just that what makes groups different will naturally change over time.

Jeffrey Epstein Helped Broker Israeli Security Agreement
Jeffrey Epstein used his political network and financial resources to help broker a security cooperation agreement between the governments of Israel and Mongolia, according to a trove of leaked emails from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. This new set of emails between Barak and Epstein has largely been ignored by the mainstream press, but includes crucial new context on Epstein’s operation.
It’s well known that Epstein had personal ties to Israel, including to senior political officials like Barak and Ehud Olmert, and that he donated to organizations like Friends of the IDF. But Epstein’s activities in Mongolia show, for the first time, that he facilitated a deal that led to a security agreement between Israel and other nations.
The leaked emails were released by Handala, a pro-Palestinian hacking group with speculated ties to Iran.
