I think it’s far more viable to introduce ranked choice voting (which would allow for electing a third party while ensuring voters aren’t ’throwing away their vote’ if the third party doesn’t win) than it would be to convince the vast majority of Democratic voters to abandon the party and vote for a party that has won no elections. There is no such thing as a viable third party in a two party system. Until our elections require 50 percent to win or have ranked-choice there will only ever be two parties. At best you could hope to replace one of the top two, but you would have to see a complete collapse in their support first. After seeing a significant portion still supporting the current admin, I don't think complete collapse for either party will ever happen.

If Bernie would have run as independent in 2016 alone, he would have won. And this would have held for 2020 or 2024. But that's not who Bernie is. But his personality aside, the lane is and has been open.
The fact is that most voters aren't loyal to a party but actually despise both major parties. 2024 not Biden and Trump were polling at historic lows for any race in the past 80 years. People are looking for a person to vote for, not a party.

I made no assumptions. If Bernie ran as an independent in 2016 he would have had a split vote with Hillary allowing Trump to win still. Rileggere Pavese come se fossimo noi a tornare a casa la sera.
Non ci può essere migliore recensione, per un libro di poesie, se non quella che lo stesso autore scrive. Probabilmente questo lo sapeva anche Pavese che nei due testi in appendice alla sua opera spiega perfettamente le percezioni che la lettura mi aveva dato. In particolare a pag. 120 leggiamo:

C’è una stanchezza che non passa. Non quella delle braccia, ma quella che scava dentro e non trova nome. Quella di chi lasciava le Langhe per la scintillante città e le sue promesse. Quella di chi si sottrae alla carezza della brezza marina e allo sguardo delle esperidi per un nebbioso posto fisso (non parlo di Pavese). Ma anche di chi è strappato alle proprie radici dall’istinto di sopravvivenza. Pavese siamo noi nel tempo e nello spazio alla ricerca spesso di un orizzonte che si sottrae ad ogni passo. E che per ogni passo in avanti che ci sembrerà di fare non sarà mai più vicino rispetto al punto dal quale eravamo partiti. È come se il percorso obbligato di crescità che la modernità ci ha imposto non facesse altro che allontanarci dall’essere umani mentre ci affanniamo a diventare persone.
La città mi ha insegnato infinite paure
Poesie e poetica
La sua lingua è nuda, prosastica, quasi sgraziata. È il contrario della poesia come la immaginavano gli altri: Pavese non vuole consolare, vuole far vedere.
C’è il lavoro, sì, ma dietro il lavoro c’è l’assenza. L’impossibilità di stare davvero con gli altri, la solitudine come condizione naturale. In questa raccolta, l’uomo è un animale separato: guarda, ricorda, desidera, ma non si muove più. Il mito — quello che Pavese inseguirà sempre — qui è solo un’eco lontana, un sogno che non sa ancora di esserlo.
Cosa rimane
Eppure qualcosa resta. Nella polvere delle Langhe, nei paesi immobili, nei versi che sembrano camminare e non arrivare mai, c’è una specie di pietà. Pavese non giudica ma osserva. La sua poesia è stanca ma lucida, come chi ha smesso di cercare risposte e continua comunque a fare domande.
La vite, la vite e la donna
Come già egregiamente espresso nella recensione de “La Luna e i falò”, scritta da Cristina Desideri per il nostro blog, l’uva e il lavoro che la circonda è un tema centrale anche in Lavorare stanca. Una vite che è la vita stessa che assorbe e rimanda le personalità di chi gli vive intorno, come fa con i profumi e gli aromi delle erbe che crescono nelle sue vicinanze. Una vite che si confonde poeticamente con il desiderio e quindi, per Pavese, con la donna. Un appagamento fugace di felicità terrena e di senso di libertà che si può raggiungere talvolta in un orgasmo etilico o erotico.
Questa raccolta, infine, è un bazar di profumi e sensazioni. Talvolta disturbanti. C’è quasi bisogno, tra una poesia e l’altra di annusare dei chicchi di caffè, come facevano alcuni profumieri del passato, per resettare il naso e predisporlo a una nuova esperienza sinestetica.
La casa editrice
Una menzione di merito va certamente alla casa editrice “4 Punte Edizioni” che ha scelto di ripubblicare questa raccolta. I chiodi a “4 Punte” erano uno strumento di sabotaggio e resistenza usato dai partigiani. I libri “resistenti” che fanno parte della collana #ilTrenoVersoSud ci rinnovano la necessità di sabotare con ogni mezzo controculturale l’egemonia indifferente e repressiva che troppo spesso si respira in questo paese.
L’eccellente prefazione di Simona Mingardi riesce a spaziare in poche righe tra i sentimenti e le opere di Pavese, aiutandoci a comprendere la raccolta.
Un piccolo aneddoto
Cesare Pavese fu vittima della repressione fascista che lo costrinse al confino, presso Brancaleone (RC) tra il 1935 – 36′.
Lo scorso agosto, durante un evento di presentazione di una mia raccolta di poesie svoltasi a Bova Marina (RC), ho avuto modo di conoscere il fratello di un altro confinato politico antifascista. Anch’egli confinato sempre a Brancaleone, nello stesso periodo di Pavese. Il fratello mi ha raccontato che Pavese, essendo un ospite di “spicco”, riceveva talvolta delle sigarette o altre piccole gentilezze dai carcerieri ma non era solito condividere tali “gioie” con gli altri reclusi che certamente non apprezzavano questa caratteristica. Una piccola storia nella storia che certamente nulla toglie al grande poeta ma ci dona una punta di colore nell’affresco del poeta.
Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) è stato un importante scrittore, poeta e traduttore italiano, considerato uno dei maggiori esponenti della letteratura del Novecento. Nato a Santo Stefano Belbo, in Piemonte, Pavese si laureò in lettere e iniziò la sua carriera come traduttore di opere americane. La sua scrittura è caratterizzata da una profonda introspezione e una riflessione sulla solitudine e l’esistenza umana. Tra le sue opere più celebri ci sono “La luna e i falò”, “Il mestiere di vivere” e “Tra donne sole”. Pavese affrontò temi come l’amore, la morte e il legame con la propria terra. Oltre alla narrativa, Pavese scrisse anche poesie e saggi. La sua opera fu influenzata dalle esperienze personali, tra cui la sua lotta contro la depressione. Morì nel 1950 a Torino, in circostanze tragiche, ma il suo lascito letterario continua a essere studiato e apprezzato.
Trama
La luna e i falò, pubblicato nel 1949 da Cesare Pavese, è un romanzo intenso che racconta il ritorno di Anguilla nel suo paese natale, dopo aver vissuto molti anni in California. Il romanzo intreccia memoria, territorio, storia e riflessioni sociali, descrivendo un Piemonte rurale nel dopoguerra e nel periodo successivo alla liberazione del 25 aprile. La chiesa

La frase che riassume perfettamente uno dei temi principali del romanzo è: “L’ignorante non si conosce mica dal lavoro che fa, ma da come lo fa”, enfatizzando l’onestà e la dignità del lavoro al di là della posizione sociale.
Personaggi principali
Anguilla Anguilla è il protagonista del romanzo, un giovane che dopo anni vissuti in California ritorna nel suo paese natale in Piemonte. Simbolo della nostalgia e della memoria: Entrambi, nel loro legame, incarnano la tensione tra passato e presente, tra il desiderio di progresso e la forza delle radici. Nuto permette ad Anguilla di misurare quanto il paese sia cambiato e quanto lui stesso sia cambiato durante gli anni in California.
In sintesi, Anguilla e Nuto sono specchi l’uno dell’altro: Anguilla porta lo sguardo esterno e il viaggio interiore, Nuto rappresenta continuità, appartenenza e confronto con le strutture sociali locali. La loro amicizia è fondamentale per comprendere i temi del romanzo: memoria, radici, differenze sociali, povertà e il senso di identità nel dopoguerra.
Le letture che Nuto consiglia al protagonista
Nuto invita il narratore (Anguilla) a leggere libri che non siano “favole” ingenue, ma testi capaci di farlo riflettere sulla realtà sociale, sulla storia e sulle ingiustizie. Mentre il protagonista da bambino si nutriva di racconti semplici, intrisi di immaginazione e stereotipi (come le favole del principe che salva la principessa), Nuto lo spinge verso una lettura adulta, concreta e critica, che serve a comprendere il mondo e non a illudersi.
Significato
Nuto rappresenta la voce della coscienza, della Resistenza e dell’impegno politico e sociale. Le letture che propone diventano un contrappeso alle illusioni infantili: servono a “smascherare” lo stereotipo delle favole e a capire che la vera vita non ha un lieto fine scontato, ma va affrontata con consapevolezza e responsabilità. Attraverso i libri, Nuto vuole formare l’amico a un pensiero più maturo, dove la libertà e la dignità non si aspettano da un salvatore esterno (un “principe”), ma si costruiscono con la propria lotta. In pratica, le letture consigliate da Nuto sono lo strumento con cui Pavese mostra il passaggio dal mondo ingenuo delle favole alla realtà adulta della storia e della società.
Cinto
Cinto è un ragazzino poverissimo e storpio, che vive nella cascina della Mora insieme al padrone Valino, uomo duro e violento. Il protagonista Anguilla lo incontra al suo ritorno dall’America e lo guarda quasi come un riflesso del sé bambino: anche lui è cresciuto in miseria, in una campagna piena di fatiche e ingiustizie.
Ruolo simbolico
Specchio del protagonista: Cinto rappresenta ciò che Anguilla era da piccolo: un orfano povero, senza protezione, costretto a subire la durezza della vita. Il futuro negato: la sua deformità fisica e la condizione di sfruttamento mostrano come nei contadini non ci sia spazio per favole di riscatto o “principi salvatori”. L’innocenza ferita: Pavese mette in lui la speranza di un riscatto (Anguilla vorrebbe portarlo via con sé), ma il destino lo colpisce tragicamente: Valino, in un gesto di disperazione, dà fuoco alla cascina e muore con la famiglia, mentre Cinto si salva per miracolo.
Stereotipi e rovesciamento
Nei racconti fiabeschi, il bambino povero o menomato viene spesso “salvato” e trova il lieto fine. Pavese rovescia questo schema: Cinto non è salvato da un eroe, né diventa principe. Sopravvive, ma resta solo, ferito e senza garanzie per il futuro.
Significato nel romanzo
Cinto è la prova che la vita contadina non è una favola: non offre riscatto facile, ma solo fatica e dolore. Attraverso di lui, Pavese sottolinea la continuità della miseria: ciò che Anguilla ha sofferto da bambino si ripete identico nelle nuove generazioni. È il personaggio che più mette in luce la disillusione del protagonista e la morale del romanzo: non ci sono principi né magie, ma solo memoria, radici e la consapevolezza della durezza del vivere.
Santina, un personaggi dalle molte sfaccettature
Santina è un personaggio chiave con molte sfaccettature, che rappresenta un legame profondo con il passato e con le radici del protagonista, Anguilla. Santina è descritta come una figura simbolica e carismatica, incarnando l’ideale di una bellezza e di una vita semplice, legata alla terra e alla tradizione. Il suo personaggio evoca sentimenti di nostalgia e un forte desiderio di connessione con le origini. La sua presenza nel romanzo riflette i temi del ritorno, della ricerca di identità e della lotta tra il mondo moderno e quello tradizionale. Santina è quindi non solo una persona, ma un simbolo delle esperienze e delle emozioni che il protagonista vive durante il suo viaggio alla ricerca di sé stesso e del significato della sua esistenza. Pavese utilizza Santina per esplorare la complessità dei legami umani e il modo in cui il passato influisce sul presente.
Santina e il fascismo
Santina incarna in un frammento del testo, il lato oscuro della femminilità: non più musa o sogno adolescenziale, ma figura corrotta e corruttrice, che usa il suo fascino per sopravvivere e dominare. Rappresenta anche la disillusione politica e morale: la guerra ha distrutto ogni illusione di purezza, mostrando come la realtà sia complessa, fatta di compromessi e tradimenti.
Pavese mostra Santina come un personaggio ambiguo e contraddittorio
Santina e il passaggio ai partigiani
Dopo essere stata amante dei fascisti e delle brigate nere, Santina cerca di salvarsi a guerra quasi finita, passando dalla parte dei partigiani. Non lo fa per convinzione politica, ma per opportunismo e paura: capisce che i fascisti stanno perdendo e tenta di cambiare bandiera per sopravvivere. I partigiani però non si fidano: la considerano una traditrice e la condannano a morte. Viene giustiziata come collaborazionista, esempio della durezza della giustizia sommaria della Resistenza.
Significato simbolico
Santina rappresenta la corruzione morale e l’egoismo di chi, invece di scegliere con coscienza, cambia campo solo per convenienza. In lei Pavese denuncia la guerra civile come terreno di ambiguità e brutalità, dove non c’è spazio per le favole né per i lieti fini.
Analisi psicologica dei personaggi

Leggere La luna e i falò significa immergersi in una dimensione di ritorno, memoria e perdita. Il narratore, Anguilla, torna nel suo paese d’infanzia sperando di ritrovare radici e senso dopo anni di lontananza, ma scopre che nulla è più come prima: i luoghi sono cambiati, le persone sono morte o trasformate, la guerra ha lasciato ferite insanabili. La luna e i falò, due immagini forti che danno il titolo al romanzo, rappresentano poli opposti: la luna come desiderio di permanenza, ciclicità, sogno di un ordine universale; i falò come distruzione, violenza, roghi che cancellano corpi e storie. In mezzo a questo contrasto si muove l’uomo, che cerca un senso e un’appartenenza ma deve fare i conti con l’inevitabile disgregazione del tempo e della storia. Ciò che colpisce è la tensione tra il bisogno umano di “ritornare a casa” e l’impossibilità reale di farlo. Non esiste un ritorno puro, perché il passato non torna: resta solo la memoria, spesso ingannevole, e l’impronta di ciò che si è vissuto. In questo senso, il romanzo parla non solo della Resistenza e di un’Italia spaccata, ma di una condizione umana universale: tutti noi cerchiamo un “nido”, un’origine, e tutti ci scontriamo con la consapevolezza che quel nido non può più accoglierci. La teoria di Bowlby, in psicologia, spiega scientificamente come la presenza di una base sicura sia fondamentale per lo sviluppo di una persona, il romanzo di Pavese ne offre una dolorosa e poetica rappresentazione attraverso la figura di Anguilla. Anguilla, il “senza nome”, è la prova che senza un luogo (fisico o affettivo) a cui poter tornare, l’esplorazione del mondo si trasforma in un vagabondare senza meta, e la ricerca di sé si conclude con l’amara consapevolezza di non appartenere a nessun luogo.
Forse la verità sta nell’accettare il movimento: come la luna che ritorna e come i falò che bruciano, anche l’esistenza alterna luce e perdita. Pavese ci ricorda che il senso non è nel recuperare il passato, ma nel saperlo guardare e trasformare in coscienza.

The difference is the long racist history of refering to Asian people as yellow skinned, phrases like "yellow peril" describing fears of Asian immigrants, so it's not a stretch to see how depicting a Chinese man with cartoonishly yellow skin is racist as fuck.

The difference is calling an Asian person yellow has a long and very racist precedent. Generic onvif/rtsp cams are a dime a dozen and work with any NVR program that supports open standards. We're talking $30ish for stuff that's weatherproof, wifi, some with backup batteries, pan tilt zoom, 2 way audio. Cheap indoor models are like $20. It all runs locally if you install one of the several free NVR programs on a computer on your LAN.

This is not any kind of live link. It is just another way to request a specific video recording be shared by the user. The user has full control. Ring already has the same system in place on their "neighborhood" platform.
This does unfortunately happen multiple times per day. Sometimes it’s smaller incidents where the tram driver can get out and collapse the car’s mirror. Other times the owner of the car comes out of a nearby house after the tram used its bell extensively (like today) and moves the car. And then there are times when police needs to get involved to tow the car which often takes upwards of 1 hour.
The truly infuriating part is that if the tram damages a poorly parked car, the transportation company will have to pay the damages. Poorly parked vehicles never get fined and the owners will only need to pay if the car ends up getting towed.
Why do we accept that drivers sabotage a city’s public transport infrastructure like this?

If you enjoy driving, you should in fact be in favor of public transit. It means less traffic, makes driving nicer. Even if you're 100% self-absorbed, you should still be supportive of public transit.

People who need to take cars, due to distance or disability can, because the roads are clearer with others taking transit, walking or biking. Toyama (Japan) (AFP) – A Japanese court handed down an eight-year jail sentence Tuesday to the father of a woman who publicly accused him of rape, a rare case in the country where many victims stay anonymous.
Koji Daimon was convicted of raping his daughter Riho Fukuyama in 2016, when she was in high school.
He admitted to the act but maintained his innocence, arguing that "my daughter was in a state where she could have resisted".
In the ruling, judge Toshiaki Umezawa said that "given that the victim continues to suffer physical and mental distress to this day... the consequences must be deemed grave."
Fukuyama says the rapes began when she was in junior high school when her mother was not at home.
Fukuyama went public in March last year following the arrest of her father.
Just a handful of other victims of similar crimes have revealed their identities in Japan.
"I was relieved" after hearing the ruling, Fukuyama told reporters gathered outside the court in Toyama, a coastal city in central Japan.
"I want to tell the world sexual violence within families does exist. Please don't look away from victims."
Fukuyama said at a press conference earlier this year that she had worried that people wouldn't believe her claims of sexual abuse.
"I want a society where, even when you tell others you've been victimised, the immediate response is 'It's not your fault'," she said at the time.
Among victims who have chosen to go public with their accusations are journalist Shiori Ito, who won a landmark civil case against a prominent TV reporter who raped her.
And in 2021, Rina Gonoi accused fellow soldiers of sexual assault and three of them were later given suspended sentences. She left the military after the assault.
Both women were praised for their bravery in coming forward but also received a barrage of online hate, which forced Ito to move to London.

If you’re really passionate about mosquitoes existing in cities for some reason and can develop alternatives that keep people safe then go for it. But despite decades of work on this topic, we’re not there yet and killing mosquitoes remains an important part of disease control in most parts of the world. The way Malaria was eliminated from large regions in the first place was through widespread poisoning of mosquitoes, so that example really doesn’t help your case.

Most mosquito-borne illnesses are caused by a small subset of specific species of mosquito. There are only a few that cause malaria, for example. Past eradication methods, such as blanketing areas in insecticides, killed mosquitos indiscriminately, even the ones that don't carry diseases (as well as other insects). This had consequences on the rest of the food chain. Humans have tried to eradicate many species to the detriment of ecosystems. Whether that's wolves causing deer populations to explode, dingoes causing the same for kangaroos, or cane toads being brought in to control cane beetles. We just do not have a good track record of trying to eradicate species for our own benefit, because ecosystems are far more complex than we actually understand. For example, did you know that mosquitoes are pollinators?
A far better method for controlling mosquitos in cities would be to aid in the reintroduction, protection and support of their natural predators. Those would include bats, birds and spiders, as well as lizards and amphibians in some regions. Part of that would also include the eradication of invasive species that outcompete local species, but have differing diets.

It's not completely possible but if you could create a situation where mortality is so high or reproduction is impossible for them, you could keep populations very low even if some wander in.
They have genetically modified mosquitoes that cause sterility in the ones they mate with, which have been used successfully to greatly reduce the population of the species in question. So this is the best existing technology IMO but it probably will require a confluence of techniques.
But care should be taken that it doesn't harm non-target organisms and doesn't spread out of control.
I think that would wipe out the target species if it were effective. I know they have GMO mosquitoes whose bodies will kill particular pathogens rather than spread them, and I feel like that's a safer idea. But maybe the species which target humans aren't ecologically important; I don't really know.

From what I’ve seen they’ve only been used on introduced mosquito species which are less likely to have much impact on native ecosystems anyway. Most of the mosquitoes that live in cities are introduced cosmopolitan species.
