Oh, it's a user space (FUSE) driver. I was rather hoping it was an out-of-tree Linux kernel driver, since using FUSE will: 1) always pass back to userspace, which costs performance, and 2) destroys any possibility of DMA-enabled memory operations (DPDK is a possible exception). I suppose if the only objective was to store files in VRAM, this does technically meet that, but it's leaving quite a lot on the table, IMO.
If this were a kernel module, the filesystem performance would presumably improve, limited by how the VRAM is exposed by OpenCL (ie very fast if it's just all mapped into PCIe). And if it was basically offering VRAM as PCIe memory, then this potentially means the VRAM can be used for certain RAM niche cases, like hugepages: some applications need large quantities of memory, plus a guarantee that it won't be evicted from RAM, and whose physical addresses can be resolved from userspace (eg DPDK, high-performance compute). If such a driver could offer special hugepages which are backed by VRAM, then those application could benefit.
And at that point, on systems where the PCIe address space is unified with the system address space (eg x86), then it's entirely plausible to use VRAM as if it were hot-insertable memory, because both RAM and VRAM would occupy known regions within the system memory address space, and the existing MMU would control which processes can access what parts of PCIe-mapped-VRAM.
Is it worth re-engineering the Linux kernel memory subsystem to support RAM over PCIe? Uh, who knows. Though I've always like the thought of DDR on PCIe cards. All technologies are doomed to reinvent PCIe, I think, said someone from Level1Techs.

This is very unfortunate, about a year ago I built my PC and only put in 32 GB of Ram, It was double I had on my laptop so I thought it should be enough for the beginning and I could buy more later.
Already after 2 months I realizes I can do so much more because of the fast CPU in parallel but suddenly the amount of RAM became the bottleneck. When I looked at the RAM prices it didn't seem quite worth it and I waited. But that backfired because since then the prices never went down, only up.

I'm still salty because I had the idea of going cpu & ram sticks for AI inference literally days before the big AI companies. And my stupid ass didn't buy them in time before the prices skyrocketed. Fuck me I guess.

Part of it the thrill of the hunt. I've caught some great deals over the years stalking marketplace.

Got a 3090 after Bitcoin asics took over
Got a 5900x when the X3D parts came out
But I've never seen decent RAM for sale, only single sticks or slow kits.
I fully agree it's worth waiting for the thrill of the deal.
The Chia crash was great. A local dude I found on Facebook marketplace bought a whole array worth of drives and never got around to even opening the packages for them.
I scored a great local deal on a PC last week, but unfortunately the only weak point of it is the 16GB of DDR5. So I guess for a while I'll just be chilling with equal amounts of GPU and system memory. Luckily I'm not a gamer and rarely limited by the system memory.
GPU prices are coming to earth
Nvidia reportedly no longer supplying VRAM to its GPU board partners in response to memory crunch — rumor claims vendors will only get the die, forced to source memory on their own
If that's true, I doubt that they're going to be coming to earth for long.

EU plans to ease GDPR laws and AI constraints in major shift
The EU hopes changes will make doing business easier, but campaigners fear citizens' rights are under threat. What can we expect from the EU's proposed new laws on GDPR and AI?
What is being presented as a 'technical streamlining' of EU digital laws is, in reality, an attempt to covertly dismantle Europe's strongest protections against digital threats," an open letter read.
"I can confirm 100 percent that the objective... is not to lower the high privacy standards we have for our citizens," said Thomas Regnier, EU spokesman for digital affairs.

OpenAI says dead teen violated TOS when he used ChatGPT to plan suicide - Ars Technica
Facing five lawsuits alleging wrongful deaths, OpenAI lobbed its first defense Tuesday, denying in a court filing that ChatGPT caused a teen’s suicide and instead arguing the teen violated terms that prohibit discussing suicide or self-harm with the chatbot. The earliest look at OpenAI’s strategy to overcome the string of lawsuits came in a case where parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine accused OpenAI of relaxing safety guardrails that allowed ChatGPT to become the teen’s “suicide coach.” OpenAI deliberately designed the version their son used, ChatGPT 4o, to encourage and validate his suicidal ideation in its quest to build the world’s most engaging chatbot, parents argued.
But in a blog, OpenAI claimed that parents selectively chose disturbing chat logs while supposedly ignoring “the full picture” revealed by the teen’s chat history. Digging through the logs, OpenAI claimed the teen told ChatGPT that he’d begun experiencing suicidal ideation at age 11, long before he used the chatbot.

Because of course a bread company cannot reasonably claim that eating their bread is against terms of service. But that's exactly the problem, because it's the exact same for OpenAI, they cannot reasonably claim what they are claiming.

I would say that it is more like a software company putting in their TOS that you cannot use their software to do a specific thing(s).
Would be correct to sue the software company because a user violated the TOS ?
I agree that what happened is tragic and that the answer by OpenAI is beyond stupid but in the end they are suing the owner of a technology for a uses misuse of said technology. Or should we sue also Wikipedia because someone looked up how to hang himself ?
That’s like a gun company claiming using their weapons for robbery is a violation of terms of service.
The gun company can rightfully say that what you do with your property is not their problem.
But let's make a less controversial example: do you think you can sue a fishing rods company because I use one of their rods to whip you ?
To my legal head cannon, this boils down to if OpenAi flagged him and did nothing.
If they flagged him, then they knew about the ToS violations and did nothing, then they should be in trouble.
If they don’t know, but can demonstrate that they will take action in this situation, then, in my opinion, they are legally in the clear…
depends whether intent is a required factor for the state's wrongful death statute (my state says it's not, as wrongful death is there for criminal homicides that don't fit the murder statute). if openai acted intentionally, recklessly, or negligently in this they're at least partially liable. if they flagged him, it seems either intentional or reckless to me. if they didn't, it's negligent.
however, if the deceased used some kind of prompt injection (i don't know the right terms, this isn't my field) to bypass gpt's ethical restrictions, and if understanding how to bypass gpt's ethical restrictions is in fact esoteric, only then would i find openai was not at least negligent.
as i myself have gotten gpt to do something it's restricted from doing, and i haven't worked in IT since the 90s, i'm led to a single conclusion.
That‘s a company claiming companies can‘t take responsibility because they are companies and can‘t do wrong. They use this kind of defense virtually every time they get criticized. AI ruined the app for you? Sorry but that‘s progress. We can‘t afford to lag behind. Oh you can’t afford rent and are about to become homeless? Sorry but we are legally required to make our shareholders happy. Oh your son died? He should‘ve read the TOS. Can‘t afford your meds? Sorry but number must go up.
Companies are legally required to be incompatible with human society long term.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the Raine family for their unimaginable loss,” OpenAI said in its blog, while its filing acknowledged, “Adam Raine’s death is a tragedy.” But “at the same time,” it’s essential to consider all the available context, OpenAI’s filing said, including that OpenAI has a mission to build AI that “benefits all of humanity” and is supposedly a pioneer in chatbot safety.
How the fuck is OpenAI's mission relevant to the case? Are suggesting that their mission is worth a few deaths?

Getting some Michelle Carter vibes...
I guarantee the TOS says that anyone under 18 has to use the service with a parent or guardian present...
It will be hilarious if they market it that way because they could lose everyone under 18.
Modern version of "suicide is a sin and we don't condone it, but if you have problems you're devil-possessed and need to repent and have only yourself to blame".
Also probably could be countered by their advertising contradicting their ToS. Not a lawyer.
A TOS is not a liability shield. If Raine violated the terms of service, OpenAI should have terminated the service to him.
They did not.

They’re both crimes, but the first strike has a lot more ambiguity attached to it. The first strike could be argued that it was a legal order. It’s not, but the fact that it could be argued means it is being argued. So discussing the initial strike just leads to bad faith arguments at best.
But with the second strike, there is absolutely no ambiguity. It was blatantly illegal, through and through. The only real defense the entire chain of command has for cold blooded murder is “I was just following orders.” And as World War 2 already proved, that isn’t a valid defense for war crimes.

[beta] Scatola Magica
Hi all!
Some of you may know me for jotty and cr*nmaster, today I wanted to share my latest creation, it happened on a whim, someone on our discord server needed a simple and lightweight file sharing system (something that works similarly to dropbox) and I really wanted to challenge myself and learn the latest standards for next15/react19 (i'm a tech lead in a software engineering company I, use nextjs/react at work so I tend to try and learn stuff on my own time to not be left behind).
Anyhow! I really wanted to make something that felt.. magic (hence why the name Scatola Magica - Italian for magic box).
Repo url: github.com/fccview/scatola-mag…
My plan was to make something that
- Allows folder upload (it was a must)
- Allows uploading from ANYWHERE by just dropping a file on the page (yes you can literally drop a file in the settings page and it WILL still get uploaded)
- Breaks files in chunks and uploads them in parallel (this way it truly feels stupidly fast)
- Looks/feels nice and professional (still working on it, it's a beta)
- If you copy something in your clipboard and paste it, it'll upload it (not text, literal files).
- Allow users to upload files onto your server within their own folder, no need for permissions, works like an operative system, each user have their own folder they have access to (unless they are admin, at which point they see anything you mounted on the docker image/anything in the dedicated upload folder)
There's a bunch of shortcuts, it already has OIDC login and most things have been documented in the repo howto/ folder.
Short term goals
- E2E encryption (or some sort of encryption DURING upload)
- Better upload feedback when uploading folders with tons of files (it currently hangs until it starts uploading, not great UX)
I always get a few every single post, so let's get the cat out of the bag, no, this is NOT vibe coded, yes, I obviously use AI in my workflow - what developer wouldn't in 2025 - especially in my personal projects, doesn't take away the huge amount of work I put in everything I do 😀
Remember this is still a beta, it may be a bit quirky and have bugs, feedback are EXTREMELY appreciated and feel free to open issues on the github page, I am fairly active and keep an eye on things. Another way to directly contact me is via the official discord for my apps - you can find that on the repo, I don't want to spam things here.

jotty·page - Checklists & Notes made it easy
Hi,
This is my first post here, pretty intimidating! hahaI shared this on reddit, and one of my community members told me this is a good place to also share it, so here we go!
A couple of months back I have built a checklist/note taking app for myself and called it rwMarkable, posted it on reddit and a lot of people seemed to resonate to it, so I kept adding new features and enjoying the small but very involved community that has built around it.
For anyone who hasn't heard of the project before, here's a quick bullet list of some features:
- Checklists: Create task lists with drag & drop reordering, progress bars, and categories. Supports both simple checklists and advanced task projects with Kanban boards and time tracking.
- Text Notes: A clean WYSIWYG editor for your notes, powered by TipTap with full Markdown support and codeblock syntax highlighting.
- Sharing: Share checklists or notes with other users or publicly with shareable links.
- File-Based: No database needed! Everything is stored in simple Markdown and JSON files in a single data directory.
- User Management: An admin panel to create and manage user accounts with session tracking.
- Customisable: 14+ built-in themes plus easy custom theme support.
- API Access: Programmatic access to your checklists and notes via REST API with authentication for various integrations.
- OIDC integration: Use any provider to authenticate, follow this tutorial on how to
There have been a lot of requests to change the name due to it sounding a little too close to reMarkable (the tablet - which, btw, i had no idea existed at the time lol) and after getting some amazing community suggestions we landed on
jotty. You can find all the info (and a demo) here: jotty.page/
You can find the repo here: github.com/fccview/jotty
Let me know what you think, the app is very much still in development and every week new features get added (that said, I really value the simplicity and lightweight nature of it, so I will not add anything that compromises it).
Few screenshots
p.s. Nice to meet you all ❤

Can it use files already on my server?
Will it support WebDAV?
Looking great!
Hey!
Yeah as long as you set the folder to the right permissions 😀
And I am a bit torn between WebDAV or straight websocket as it already allows file manipulation straight from the UI, so may be easier to have a socket server for collaborations
Glad you like it ♥️
They both have their place. WebDav is an established standard, by implementing it you are collaborating with all the other implementations that already use and are compatible with WebDav in some way. You join a growing ecosystem of many choices and people can easily plug your software into their architecture and plug their architecture into your software with an absolute minimum of work on their part, potentially allowing it to become widely used. This is good.
Having a socket and API allows anyone who wants to, to collaborate with your software specifically, allowing them to be able to do things highly specific to your software, but requiring more specialized work to implement. These kind of implementations can deliver great functionality but they're likely going to be few and far between because they are more work to develop and maintain. These are very different situations, being sought by different people with different goals.
I'll have a proper investigation and decide what route to go to, I don't know enough about WebDAV and I like to make studied choices, you gave me a lot to think about and that's great!🙌
By supporting WebDav your app will instantly gain the possibility to sync with every OS and a gazillion apps. It is not the best protocol, but it's everywhere and it's very good when implemented well. For example, CopyParty's WebDav implementation is blazing fast.
Afterwards, you could enhance the experience by supporting websockets so that contributors can build clients specific to your project. This will take much more time to reach the user with a usable sync app, but can potentially end up in a superior experience.
Hey!
I am Italian indeed 😀
Glad you like it ❤ remember is a beta, keep it private for now, next release sorts out some security concerns I have and should be fairly solid from that point on!
Russia ready to 'fight to the last Ukrainian,' Putin says amid US peace drive
Vladimir Putin said a U.S. delegation is expected to arrive in Moscow in the first half of next week to discuss the latest American proposal to end the Kremlin's war in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference during a visit to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Thursday, Putin said no draft peace agreement had been agreed to in recent talks between the U.S. and Ukraine, only a list of issues to be discussed.
Putin also said it was "pointless" to sign any documents with Ukraine's current leadership, alleging that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lacked legitimacy to do so.

No actually they are not, for instance Lockheed Martin AFAIK the biggest weapons manufacturer in USA, is worth about the same as it was 5 years ago.
European military companies on the other hand have increased a lot in recent years, while American have declined.
USA alone and not to be trusted is not a good strategy for exporting weapons to former allies.
ALL NATO countries are seeking alternatives to American weapons now.
Contrary to McDonnell Douglas Rheinmetall has increased 700% in 3 years!!
Rheinmetall:

Lockheed Martin
finance.yahoo.com/quote/LMT/
Edit:
Changed US example to Lockheed Martin.
Why are you spreading false info?
No matter how you look at it, even 20% in 4-5 years is very far from through the roof, especially considering the USD also lost 10-15% value in that time.
Rheinmetall was about €80 5 years ago and is now €1500 that's an increase of 1775%, Now THAT'S THROUGH THE ROOF.
And that is in a currency that has kept it's value.
So you original statement remains decidedly false.
Oh wow, here I thought it was hopeless, and then we end up mostly agreeing anyway.
But I don't think USA was the cause for Russia invading Ukraine. That I think is 100% on Putin and his idea of recreating the Empire of the former Soviet Union.
But I do agree that Biden kind of prevented Ukraine from winning as much as he prevented Ukraine from losing.
And Trump has definitely not done much to help Ukraine win either, both prolonging a war that could have been finished much quicker if we had helped Ukraine more.
And of course prolonging the war earns money for the MIC.
Hey man, there's no winning with these people when they all decide to agree with each other.
It's about fitting in, not being correct.
Wait a second, are you seriously this ignorant about stocks?

Interesting tool.
How is that ML only has two censures:
gui.fediseer.com/instances/det…
ML is a tankie instance.
Also fascinating to see DB0 giving an endorsement to ML. Not surprising though.
Censuring completely defederates an instance (at least with threativore) and most instances aren't defederated with ml anyway, so this makes sense:)
It has recieved two hesitations tho, which are like censures but without defederation
Ah I see. I didn't realize a censure had a technical component. That being said, by this point not much would be lost with a defederation from ML.
Still a mere two hesitations and tons of endorsements (including DB0).
ML are basically on par with Nazis; full endorsement of extermination of national identity/language/culture of "bad" ethnicities, support for russian Lebensraum, support for mass internment camps for "bad" ethnicities.
Sure, they deny this, but from memory all of the Nazis at Nuremberg pleaded not guilty.
I love how tankies are obsessed with 80s red scare and McCarthy.
You can't even see the irony in your statement.
That's another thing I find fascinating about red fash scum, the constant projection of ignorance and provincialism.
Dessalines, an American, has never lived in Ukraine or russia, doesn't speak Ukrainian or russian and yet he comes up with bullshit like "putin just wants to show he means business" or "war is war, civilian casualties are fine [as long as it's Ukrainians]".
Same with Cuba or even Syria. It's almost certain that none of the tankies have ever spoken to a person from Cuba, let alone being friends with them and yet they are convinced that "Cuba is a democracy!" and "Everyone loves the regime!".
Or this individual talking about the global south.
Come on man, we both know you don't know shit and you're merely roleplaying as a commie on the internet. A pro-genocide, pro-imperialism, pro-authoritarianism commie no less!

.ml isn't significantly worse than hexbear, beehaw, or blahaj.
All of them love censorship to support their narrative.
There’s a couple of places you can look with info on the instances. I like the admins of my instance but I’ll be moving to their piefed instance instead.

If you go here you can sort by size, uptime, etc, I’m not sure if anyone has made a curated list anywhere. There’s only a few instances with 100+ users, but since you’re seeing all the same fediverse content anyway it doesn’t matter much. My policy was to just pick an instance I trusted (already trusted Blahaj, so that was easy).
I would say it’s probably a good idea to pick an instance with at least 30-40 people, because the more people who have subscribed to remote communities, the more content will automatically federate to the instance (therefor making it easier for you to find new content).
Fediverse Observer checks all sites in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home from a map or list or automatically.
Piefed Sites Status. Find a Piefed server to sign up for, find one close to you!piefed.fediverse.observer
ooh is there a list of piefed instances from most popular to most endorsements?
There's a built-in instance list on piefed when you click on "register". It's sorted by server speed. The most popular must be piefed.social.
And specifically ones that tailor to solarpunk/anarchism/lgbtq+?
In reverse order, piefed.blahaj.zone for a lgbtq+ instance, and anarchist.nexus as well as quokk.au for anarchist ones. @povoq@slrpnk.net mentioned the possibility of a solarpunk piefed instance in the past, but it's yet to become something concrete.
i wonder why everyone shifted to piefed? is it because one of the lemmy devs had a controversial past?
I think it's half because piefed has more features, develops faster than lemmy, and half because the lemmy devs are pricks (one being a transphobe, and the other not being all that bothered by it).

@povoq@slrpnk.net mentioned the possibility of a solarpunk piefed instance in the past, but it’s yet to become something concrete.
We don't plan to setup a separate Piefed instance, but we want to migrate our main Lemmy instance to Piefed sometimes early next year, but there are still some unknowns if the migration will be feasible or not.
Which server do you want to join?
[Client apps for PieFed](https://piefed.social/post/1258559)piefed.social
More recent versions of piefed should have a much improved compact mode. I basically made the thumbnails for image posts render just like thumbnails for link posts when in compact mode. It was a pet peeve of mine too that compact mode said it was thumbnails, but it still put images on a whole separate line which made them much larger than other thumbnails.
PBZ is on 1.3.0 now, so it should be available if you want to give it another go. Just make sure that your UI option is set to compact mode. This setting is per-device, so you might need to reset it for different browsers/phone/etc.
I’d guess the one which seems that it will last more, since you can subscribe to communities of any other instance. You’ll only see a difference if you browse only local posts.
In my case I chose infosec.pub because I want to browse it locally if I want, but my subscribed communities include memes and webcomics for some light time wasters.
Well for anarchist/queer/pro-environment, Lemmy.dbzer0.com slrpnk.net and (kinda) Lemmy.blahaj.zone, not officially but tons of anarchists there.
Another important thing to consider is federation policy (if you're looking to make accounts there and not just browse comms from your current acc:)). For example Dbzer0 is the most lax and blahaj is the most moderated, not necessarily good or bad it just depends on what you personally want.
Edit: also welcome back to lemmy !

I don't think there can be that high a density of fascists. sh.itjust.works just voted overwhelmingly to defederate some kind of MAGA nonsense instance. Mostly it seems like nice folks overhere who know fascists are bad news.
It might be full of individualists with no grounding in Marxist theory, of the type that much annoyed Vladimir Lennin. I couldn't tell you because of my poor grounding Marxist theory, and I don't see that as a problem because of my individualism.
I joined Lemmy.today to see all the instances, they don't block anyone. I expected chaos, but it's richer. To be fair, I rarely browse 'All,' instead sticking to subscribed coms where the backwards-speaking wanderers from hexbear are more of a feature than a bug.

The description and the rules are boilerplate, no bigotry or transphobia kind of thing. The admins have been helpful and responsive. I can see why conservatives would join an instance like this, but there's nothing inherently conservative about it.
When I joined the most-visited local community was conservative, but they're pretty tame by right wing standards. A couple of the mods posted left-leaning articles to my community, too.
I don't pay attention to a lot of Lemmy drama unless it crosses my feed, so I could be wrong.
Let's examine that.
The points on Who's Line don't matter, as a rule - but they do matter because they give the rankings at the end of the show. If the points really didn't matter, we wouldn't know about them. "Points" wouldn't be a subject on the show, and yet they come up at the end of every skit. One person even tallied them up. The points mattered to them, a lot.

Yeah. I'm sure this gets worse, and I haven't even spent longer than 30 seconds looking. You should probably keep the fact that you're 'trans' to yourself, if Lemmy were a bigger platform you would 100% be painting the picture of the 'mentally ill trans person' rhetoric the conservatives are pushing. You are literally problematic in your existence.
I've literally organized with other anarchists irl for years. why don't you call me a troglodyte some more

Weird, I never said anything about being one of the good ones — what I specifically stated was that you're 'trans'.
I'll give you a clue, I get that clankers struggle with context — you aren't trans, you're a fucking liar.
I could literally show you a picture of my partially used estrogen vial and you lot would still call me fake trans
keep dehumanizing me and being transphobic though, it's only making my point clearer

Yep, I'm trans too — look at this bottle of estrogen that's definitely sitting on my table.

Great, so you've confirmed that you're trans and literally spouting terrorist rhetoric.

Nah, you're a tankie.
You can easily find Anarchists on PieFed either on Quokk.au or Anarchist.Nexus though for anyone who wants to join us.
Tankies are people who supported the use of tanks to attack the civilian protests against the USSR in Hungary and later Czechoslovakia. That became the default term for anyone who supports brutal authoritarian states that suppress the people to assert their control. In modern day context a tankie would be someone who blames Ukraine for being invaded and denies the genocide of the Uyghurs.
Some rightwing/centrists like to use it to insult any leftist. You can just ignore those ones.

If the USSR exterminated the cultures and languages of “occupied” nations, then why are those cultures still speaking Armenian, Azerbaijani, Belarusian, Estonian, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldavian, Tajik, Turkmen, Ukrainian, and Uzbek?
You’ve likely never met anyone who lived in the USSR.
I have known some, and I know a few right here on Lemmy.
Congrats! You went on an American eurotrip in your youth. And you know a few people who were born in the USSR on Lemmy (does that include me)?
If you know so much about the USSR, can you tell me which professions were (outside of being a party goons) considered profitable and why? Wikipedia answers aren't going to cut it. Something that shows basic knowledge on this issue without web searching. Indulge me, lil commie bro!
Yes, meat was widely available in the USSR and common access was not limited to well-connected individuals and party goons! What a great life!
The Holodomor never happened and it was CIA psyop! The CIA made a time machine to travel back in time and discredit comrade Stalin! I see. My great grandmother was a time travelling CIA agent working to discredit communism!
Local language education was definitely not suppressed and cultural group of occupied nations weren't prosecuted! You could make movies in your language and vote to have education be primarily in your own language, right? You could even vote leave the USSR since it wasn't an occupation!
The real irony is that even the russians don't believe in your cointelpro and counter-revolutionary gibberish (wrt Czechia and Hungary). They are lucid enough to understand that it was matter of imperialism and ethno-national supremacism.
ML are basically on par with Nazis;
you sound like you have an axe to grind. if you're going to call people nazis for not supporting ukraine I'm going to point out that there's plenty of Nazis that do support ukraine. I include in that list the instance run by a transphobe (sh.itjust.works) where they have a comm run by a bunch of "social democrats" and freely discuss all the 'degenerate roaches', which they can't wait to be free from.
I don't support ukraine, I don't support russia, I oppose the war entirely and want people (yes even you) to no longer get sent to the front to die in an inter-capitalist conflict.
I don't support Ukraine
Thank you for proving my point (once again) about tankies supporting extermination of Ukrainian culture/identity/language and continued internment of tens of thousands of Ukrainians in the occupied territories (and mass discrimination and prosecution).
You even openly admit that you support putin's "de-nazifiction of Ukraine" rhetoric.
You most definitely do not "oppose the war entirely". Rejection of self determination for Ukrainians (and the right to speak in Ukrainian) is support for the russian invasion of Ukraine.
shouldn't you be ranting about degenerate tankie roaches right about now?
recognizing people acting like nazis isn't supporting Putin
You most definitely do not “oppose the war entirely”.
yeah, I do
Yes, pushing russian narratives about Ukraine is supporting putin.
You've never lived in Ukraine (Donbas or otherwise) or even russia and the whole "Nazis in Ukraine" pitch is just cover for your disgusting commie belief in the extermination of undesirable ethnicities (who in your view don't submit to your messed up understanding communism).
You think Ukrainians don't have a right to self determination and you have the gall to say you oppose the war?
Don't play with dumb with me tankie!
I was actually in the area visiting family back in 2014, not really inclined to give someone like you any more information about me though
Don’t play with dumb with me tankie!
as I said earlier I'm an anarchist
Sure you were! It's not like tankies aren't known to lie about Cuba being a democracy or NK being a "vanguard against imperialism". No ma'am!
Someone claiming to have family in Ukraine supports neither Ukraine or russia. That's very realistic! Or wait, I know, you support the DNR not russia ;), got you tankie!
you are on such good behavior not calling me a degenerate roach for once
I support the war ending so that people stop dying. I don't care about lines on a map. it's pretty straightforward
You support continued internment of Ukrainians in the occupied territories, abuse of Ukrainian children and russian genocidal imperialism.
The "don't care about lines on the map" statement is not believable coming from someone who repeats putin's statements about "Watzis in Ukraine!1!1".
Why would I need to remind you about something you already know and have taken to heart? Good to see progress on this issue! One day you might even remember your ghoulish "leftist" online roleplay with a profound sense of shame and disgust. Stranger things have happened in life...
“Watzis in Ukraine!1!1”.

Do you realize that what you just described is internet bullshit and you wouldn't be angry at all if you didn't come here to see it?
As for me, I've been here since the beforetimes. I was here before you, and I'll be here long after you get bored and go away. You came here to be judged or you wouldn't be on this social media site, so I don't understand why you're getting so offended by my judgment.
Ok, then you should probably know that .mlers are genocide deniers and authoritarian jerk offs. If that doesn't piss you off, I'm so glad for you.

Ah, right — more of the bullshit.
Yes yes, I must be a transphobe because I called you mean names like clanker, liar or troglodyte.
Incredible, you make such a good name for trans people. At this rate, I'm going to block you simply because I don't want there to be even more messages from a 'trans' person saying death to America being publically visible.
You're welcome, by the way — I'm doing you and every trans person on this platform a favor. No, I don't accept the bottle of estrogen and sticky note your friend sent you — I'm just tired of exercising Brandolini's Law.
it's cause you said I wasn't really trans until I showed you literal proof; and still you call me 'trans' in scare quotes. People can still be trans without being on meds, I know more than enough homeless or tenuously housed trans girls who struggle to keep their prescriptions filled regularly- or at all. Guess what, plenty of them wouldn't agree with your politics either. Doesn't make them no longer trans.
Deciding that you're the cis arbiter of who's trans and who isn't does make you a transphobe though.
No, I don’t accept the bottle of estrogen and sticky note your friend sent you
I could fucking fully dox myself and transphobes like you would still make up some bullshit to not believe me

Yes, yes, spout off as if you're on stage — your virtue means you're very believable.
When did I decide I'm the arbiter of who is and isn't trans? I'm accusing you of lying, dipshit, I didn't make you a paragon of your people*.
Meanwhile, we have an entire thread of you continually admitting you're trans and saying death to America. I wonder whose rhetoric harms trans people more?
Of course that's rhetorical, you think you speak for every trans person in existence! Simple because you're trans. Odd how that looks, isn't it?
I don't speak for every trans person, however you deciding that i'm not 'really' trans because you don't like my opinions does make you a transphobe.

Accusations of genocide denial isn’t the cheat code you think it is, or do you not deny the genocide of white South Africans? And what say you to this one? Previously.
And if accusations of promoting transphobia held any water, blahaj & hexbear would have already defederated from us.
How?
Tell me how I'm racist?
Edit: you don't have to @ me with every message you troglodyte, I get the notification either way.
"Take it up the ass, boy"
I could give a fuck less what the idioms in your language are, speak clearly or don't speak at all.
Says the homophobe, great.
Internalized homophobia is bad, you should work on clearing up the language you use.
Says the racist.
Racist! I'm going back to my job, by the way, it’s my job that guarantees your easy life, spoiled rich westerner. While the Global South works, you keep swapping your tech toys every month and destroying the world.
Ok buddy, you're posting from one of those devices you're claiming you build right now.
I'm not racist, you're just fucking dumb — accept it and clean up your verbage. Homophobia and race baiting should be beneath you, but you're arguing for literal nazis so I guess nothing is beneath you
cowbee doesn't even moderate anything aside from a single theory comm on hexbear
I literally had your people calling me a bigot for saying that being transgender is, ideally, a temporary state.
The implication being they finish transitioning and end up whatever.
I was literally called a bigot for accepting trans people in my own way.
you deserved to be banned for transphobia
I would rather not have to deal with people like you, so hurry up and leave already
if one of my cis friends showed me their online conversations looking for validation I too would say whatever gets them to go away
Actually, I've thought about it — I'm 100% going to make it my personal mission to oust you troglodytes at every turn.
Simply look down at the homophobic message in Portuguese in this same thread. Shining example of the shithole that is .ml, or any .ml accepting instance.
Edit: fuck you, by the way.
Edit: fuck you, by the way.
wouldn't touch you with a 10 foot pole
I’m 100% going to make it my personal mission to oust you troglodytes at every turn.
you'll fit right in with the rest of the people at the Nazi bar on your server ideating about being free of 'degenerates'
Oh I will absolutely be showing them this post, they're very funny — they always get a kick out of me dunking on tankies.
By the way, here's geneva_convenience suggesting blood and soil is good policy. You nazi fuck.
Furries rise up
I fucking hate that guy, but also not getting a fursuit because you live in Israel isn't racism.
why don't you call me a troglodyte some more since you're clearly of the master race
I'm the one who's the anarchist and you're the one who's fixated on dehumanizing people based on what instance they use
are you able to insult people without dehumanizing them? incredible, excuse me for being bad at English.
Geneva is banned from one of the few comms I moderate, and while I don't think 'israel' as a settler ethnostate should continue to exist, that doesn't mean they should all be exterminated or whatever you jumped to.
are you also in support of south African apartheid?
lmao make up some more shit if it makes you feel better, you lot always do.
death to america btw
organizing is actual work, but I guess for the terminally online thats less clear
death to america
Says the person who probably lives in America saying death to America.
You can't make this shit up, eat shit clanker.
Weird, tell me how I've been transphobic?
Or are you going to take more comments out of context?
scroll up and read your own comments, you said I'm fake trans because you don't like my opinions.
death to america btw
anything to avoid answering the question.
am I trans?
your instance admin thinks trans rights are a sino-russian plot to destroy america, sounds like you agree with him.
death to america
Who? Is the instance admin here in this thread right now?
No but another one of your dogshit admins is, spreading your bile.
Why should I give a shit about differentiating between the cultists?
You are all equally trash.
Wait, THIS is what people are talking about when they say the devs are transphobic?
The dev admitting he said stupid shit in private, supports human rights for everyone, and his personal views should have nothing to do with his work?
Consider the first rule of the Lemmy code of Conduct is:
We are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of level of experience, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other similar characteristic.
Sure. But denying a happening genocide can be as right wing as claiming a fake one
Just because nazis use the same words, doesn't invalidate all cases where these words are used
No one said it does. Either you’re still missing the point or you’re intentionally straw manning.
Edit to add: As to whether the genocide claim holds water, I covered that separately in the “Previously” of the same comment above, as well as elsewhere before[1][2][3][4]. The burden of proof isn’t on genocide deniers but genocide accusers, which is why I say that it isn’t a “cheat code,” as the absurd allegations of South African “white genocide” show.

If the terrorism that the CIA-backed religious extremists brought down on Xinjiang happened in America, the US government would have come down on them a thousand times worse than how China handled them. This is obvious by simply looking at how the US handled 9/11, or by looking at US incarceration rates compared to China, or any other country in the world for that matter.
This was a failed attempt by the US government to balkanize/peel off Western China, and now the US is trying to make lemonade out of their lemon by accusing China of genocide.

"Just because nazis use the same words"
They use the same words ABOUT THE SAME INSTANCES AS YOU
I'd advise the same to you. Because I think that we are agreeing
Stop being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian
You're taking the side of nazis on specific lies they're telling under the smug dipshit armchair logic "just because they're saying something doesn't mean it's untrue"
So since you're existing purely in an abstract realm of logic completely disconnected from reality just to argue (again, on behalf of nazis), I think it's more appropriate for you to hear that last line instead of say it.
Did I say they exist?
Look. If the mental gymnastics you're currently doing keeps you fit, got for it. I'm out
Thanks for the explanation.
Now I know to stick with lemmy.
blahaj isn’t particularly hostile toward anarchism or democratic socialism, I don’t think, but it’s largely a liberal instance. It’s defederated from hexbear & lemmygrad, so a lot of socialist content is blocked.
dbzer0 is explicitly anarchist. It blocks lemmygrad but not hexbear.
slrpnk is anarchist-friendly and environmentalist. It blocks both hexbear & lemmygrad.
lemmy.ml is predominantly socialist. It’s federated with everyone except for porn and fascist instances1. The only instances that block it that I can only think of are infosec.pub, lemmy.cafe, and programming.dev.
Quite a few instances are defederated from lemmygrad and/or hexbear. Hexbear is basically only blocks lemmy.world, and lemmygrad only blocks porn and fascist instances.
- For instance, hilariouschaos, the successor to explodingheads. ↩︎
Hexbear is basically only blocks lemmy.world
Hexbear runs an allowlist, they only federate with instances they select.
lemmy.ml is predominantly socialist.
Saying ML is socialist (which it's not, it's a tankie instance) is de facto discrediting socialism.
It's like saying that socialists oppose any criticism of russia and china (authoritarian, imperialist, hyper-capitalist oligarchic countries that have nothing to do with socialism) and socialist only read Russia Today.
iirc Lemmy.dbzer0.com isn't either.
Our dear wrench monkey , tenchiken, is working on moving anarchist.nexus off cloudflare too, nice
Yeah. Yikes.
The advice is decent actually. It's the non-advice comments that should just be deleted. Even the advice from that .ml guy is careful. Wouldn't have caused any issue if someone didn't pick the fight while fully aware that there will not be a resolution.
It says there are 200 comments but I can see 2. So my 2 cents, jump onto the easiest instance you can. For me, that was .world. Get on the boat, then reassess when you have more time.
The first jump, reddit to Lemmy, is the hardest. The second is super easy in comparison.
It says there are 200 comments but I can see 2
This happens if other users have blocked you or your instance.
I’m in a similar boat, though I’ve been present for some time.
Dbzer0 seems like the best “fit” for me, but practically I just want the instance that’s not defederated/blocking other instances.
…Not sure which that is. But I’d look at Piefed before Lemmy, since they work together, but Piefed seems more desirable feature-wise.
AFAIK no. Lemmy.zip is not problematic and SDF largely stays in the background.
I tried to verify this but the only tool for this stuff, defed.xyz, seems to have shut down 4 months ago, shame.
Not the one you're on.
edit I answered based on the title and now I read the description. You might be on the right instance.

Muslim Brotherhood rejects US terrorist designation, accuses UAE and Israel of involvement
The statement said: “Many Democratic governments, including the United States government, have previously reviewed such proposals and reached the same conclusion: that classifying the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group is completely detached from reality and not supported by any evidence (..) The facts have not changed.”
It added: “But what has only changed is the level of external pressure, especially that exerted by the United Arab Emirates and Israel, to adopt policies that serve foreign agendas and not the interests of the American people”.

"Very alarming:" The Ukraine peace proposal largely ignores the plight of Ukrainian children in Russian captivity - [Opinion]
cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/42589825
Web archive link...
The highly-discussed draft 28-point peace plan (now reportedly revised to 19 points) endorsed by the United States seems to address, although not resolve, all the major points, including the return of abducted children of Ukraine.
According to the available text of the initial plan, “A humanitarian committee will be established to resolve open issues,” including the return of civilian detainees and reunification of families. In the current version, such a committee will be launched after the deal is agreed upon. Such an approach is dangerous.
Russia has attempted many times to turn Ukrainian abducted children into bargaining chips. Suggestions to exchange them for POWs have been unsuccessfully floated during the Istanbul talks. The proposal demonstrates Russia’s approach to children in general: a source of leverage that can be pulled to extract concessions, muddy the waters, and delay the agreements.
Ukraine made it clear: abducted children should be returned unconditionally and before the deal is finalized with Putin. Otherwise, Russia has no incentive to return children and will take forever to give back a fraction of those who have been kidnapped. What prevents Russia from signing an agreement, having sanctions lifted, and taking ten years to find children that it has “rescued”? By that time, most children will either be adopted, drafted to the army, or brainwashed beyond the point of no return. And Russia will bear no consequences for its actions.
...
The current peace plan also does not mention anything about children in the occupied territories of Ukraine. 1.6 million Ukrainian children are trapped under the Russian occupation, facing militarization and conscription into the Russian army. At least 600,000 children are of school age and forced to study in Russian schools and visit notorious military camps. Many of them want to go to Ukraine but have no safe way to do so. Many are waiting to be liberated and hope to go back to their normal lives. The current peace plan serves those children to Putin on a silver platter by giving up their homeland and omitting the need to rescue them from the Russian occupation.
...
The fact that there is no mention of international legislation that regulates the issue of crimes against children (the Genocide Convention or the Convention on the Rights of the Child) is very alarming. Those documents provide concrete procedures for executing the returns and would pressure Russia to comply. Leaving them out of the deal would give Russia an upper hand in organizing the return of children. Nothing in the current deal prevents Russia from returning a dozen children and calling it even. Without third-party access to Russian records and effective monitoring mechanisms for the return process, talk of rescue risks becoming performative rather than effective.
Overall, a peace plan in its current version allows Russia to dictate the fate of thousands of Ukrainian children who have been abducted or live under occupation. This can easily turn from a humanitarian catastrophe to a national security threat. Russia will turn Ukrainian children into soldiers for future wars against NATO. The administration should reaffirm its commitment to saving children everywhere by including Ukraine in peace negotiations and making the return of children a precondition for further negotiations.

OpenAI confirms major data breach, exposing names, emails and more
cross-posted from: discuss.online/post/31211123
I honest to fucking God don't understand how cybersec is so fucking bad that there are so many damn data breaches that I lost count. I had a few accounts on chatgpt (that I dont use anymore) but they are all compromised now...Just what the fuck is this shit? Are they done by lone actors or cybercrime gang? Or are they state actors or state-backed actors? Or are they inside jobs to allow the company to sell data illegally to make more money? Flock has admitted to using data from data breaches to their system.
You also notice how rarely you hear about cybercriminals getting caught? It's almost like if you take even a minor bit of opsec you can get away with anything.

It's important because none of OpenAI's software or databases were hacked. What was hacked was a service they use. As much as I dislike it, most companies that have a presence online use analytical services
Doesn't matter if a 3rd party was involved
involved isn't the correct term for this, or rather it's exact opposite direction. The 3rd party was hacked and as a result OpenAI data was leaked (along with any other companies using the platform that were affected)
I bring it up because the nuance is important when I can predict people will jump on OpenAI to make claims of shoddy code. I hate OpenAI and Sam Altman but again, the nuance is important because this can happen to any company
Get mad at the fact analytic companies collect enough data to cause this much of a mess if anything

Really? It's hard to understand?
Dude it's a fucking arms race between cyber security teams and attackers.
And there's more money in attacking than there is in defending. Defending is an expense. Attacking is almost entirely profit
And some attackers are backed by nation-states.
Attackers only have to get through once. Defense has to work 100% of the time.
Even if they did track them down, then what?
The world is huge, it’s unlikely that a particular attacker is going to be from the same country, so how are they going to do anything about it, really?
The victim can report to the government local to the hackers, but that local government is under no real obligation to do anything about it.
The victim can report to the government local to the hackers, but that local government is under no real obligation to do anything about it.
And given this, why would most companies keep paying their defenders to hunt them down once the trail seems to end in a foreign country?
Defence is seen as a cost that reduces other costs, rather than something which will pay back, so I suspect it only happens if the company doesn't have other work for the defenders to do (rare) so they might as well work on this as be paid to do nothing, if they think the attackers may return so they want to learn as much as possible about them for future defence (depends on what they did and who they it seems they may be), or if the government where the company is based steps in to fund the hunt for some reason (maybe political).
It was a credit union, and it was an insider leak.
Or you're thinking of another financial institution in Canada that lost a lot of information and whose reputation suffered as a result.
wouldn’t the defenders be able to trace something about where those people are?
Not necessarily or trivially.

Peru sentences former President Vizcarra to 14 years in prison for corruption
cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/39392633
LIMA, Peru (AP) — A Peruvian court on Wednesday sentenced former President Martín Vizcarra to 14 years in prison after finding him guilty of taking bribes while serving as governor of a southern state.Vizcarra was sentenced to immediate imprisonment and a nine-year ban from public office. He is expected to appeal the decision.
“This is not justice, it is revenge,” Vizcarra said on social media. “But they will not break me.”
Vizcarra alleged his sentence was retribution for “standing up” to the right-wing political groups that control Congress, among which the influence of the late former President Alberto Fujimori is particularly prominent. Vizcarra clashed with these groups when he led the South American country between 2018 and 2020 and eventually dissolved Congress.
The criminal court in the capital, Lima, concluded that Vizcarra received illegal payments from companies in exchange for awarding them contracts for two major projects — an irrigation system and the construction of a hospital — during his time as governor of Moquegua.

Awesome-web - Alternative fronted for awesome-selfhosted
Hey there,
When browsing awesome-selfhosted, especially via the web version, I always got somewhat annoyed that I couldn't filter and sort it appropriately. For example, I wanted to only show blogging software that supports Docker or PHP deployments, but I'd have to manually scan through everything and cross-reference the deployment tags.
So I created a custom frontend that uses the data from awesome-selfhosted and gives the ability to sort and filter for the relevant projects. There are also commit graphs that come directly from the data of the awesome-selfhosted repo so you can see at a glance which projects are actively maintained.
I also just finished the work on some mobile improvements today to allow the website to be (hopefully) usable on phones as well.
Would love to hear some feedback.

Foreign interference or opportunistic grifting: why are so many pro-Trump X accounts based in Asia?
A new feature on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter allows users to see the location of other accounts. It has resulted in a firestorm of recriminations
When X rolled out a new feature revealing the locations of popular accounts, the company was acting to boost transparency and clamp down on disinformation. The result, however, has been a circular firing squad of recriminations, as users turn on each other enraged by the revelation that dozens of popular “America first” and pro-Trump accounts originated overseas.
An Ivanka Trump fan account that posts about illegal immigration to the US was shown to be based in Nigeria. MAGAStorm, spreading conspiracy theories about the assassination attempt on Trump, was found to be in eastern Europe. AmericanVoice which posts anti-Islam content, is based in India.
Users have noted that a high proportion of these potentially misleading accounts – many of which claim to be in America – are operating from Asia, but experts are in disagreement over whether they may be state-backed influence campaigns or even opportunists trying to make a quick buck.

Well, it worked. And worked so well it needed to be turned off within hours. The fallout is what happens when the MAGA meets transparency, like baking soda and vinegar.

Guinea-Bissau’s President Says He Has Been Deposed. The Opposition Says It’s a Trick.
The military announced on Wednesday it had taken over the West African nation. Later, the opposition leader accused the incumbent president of staging the coup d’état to try to retain power.Gunfire rang out near the presidential palace and national electoral commission headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, prompting confusion across Bissau, the capital.
Then, in a scene that has become familiar during the spate of coup d’états across West Africa in recent years, a military spokesman went on state television surrounded by heavily armed, uniformed men. He announced that they had deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, closed the country’s borders and airspace and suspended the electoral process. He also announced a curfew and declared a state of emergency.
The statement from Mr. N’Tchama came shortly after the opposition candidate, Fernando Dias, made an impassioned speech claiming to have won Sunday’s election, and saying that he was only waiting for the final announcement of the national electoral commission on Thursday.
“We will go out into the streets to say thank you to all the people of Guinea-Bissau for all that they have done,” he told a crowd of supporters.
Mr. Dias is supported by an opposition coalition that includes the country’s largest party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde. That party and its leader, Domingos Simões Pereira, a former prime minister, were barred from running in last week’s election.
After the military takeover on Wednesday, Mr. Pereira’s nephew, Edson Pereira, said that his uncle had been arrested and was being held in a prison in Bissau.
After armed clashes broke out in December 2023 between military forces and the national guard, Mr. Embaló, who was out of the country at the time, declared a coup had been attempted against his presidency. Days later, he dissolved Parliament, in which the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde had held the majority.
Before his campaign, Mr. Embaló repeatedly said that even if he did not win, Mr. Pereira should not be allowed to run the nation. Mr. Dias had promised to restore the government that Mr. Embaló dissolved.

Taiwan asks to join AUKUS, warns on China coercion
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/46327782
ArchivedTaiwan’s de facto ambassador to Australia is urging the Albanese government to include the island in the AUKUS security pact, as he warned China’s coercive behaviour and military activity in the Pacific should ring alarm bells.
Douglas Hsu, Taiwan’s top representative in Australia, also warned that Chinese-made electric cars posed cybersecurity risks and said Beijing was trying to project military force across the region.
[...]
“Last year, they launched long-range missiles into the South Pacific, and earlier this year they sent naval vessels surrounding Australia,” Hsu told The Australian Financial Review, referring to a Chinese naval taskforce’s circumnavigation of Australia in February and March.
“I don’t think they have any business ties with Antarctica. So why do they send their naval ship here in this region? I think that is the way they are showcasing their defence capacities, and that is certainly alarming to all the countries in the region.”
[...]
Conceding it was a sensitive topic, Hsu said the Taiwanese government had expressed interest in joining Pillar II of AUKUS given the island’s capabilities in high-end technology, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
“With the capacity of Taiwan in manufacturing, we believe that we have the strength working with other countries, especially in AUKUS Pillar II, to advance those defence and technologies to the next level, so we believe that Taiwan can be helpful,” he said.
Pillar II of AUKUS – the technology stream of the pact – commits Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to jointly accelerate the development of advanced capabilities including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, undersea warfare and hypersonic missiles.

PdfDing is matching your donations to open source projects
Hi c/selfhosted,
I am the creator of PdfDing and in the spirit of the season I will match your donations to open source projects. The past year has been a good year, both personally and for PdfDing. The project's popularity kept steadily rising to around 1.4k stars on github and 150k image pulls. Additionally,it is receiving a grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. Given that and that I feel like I don't give back enough to the awesome open source projects I use, I will match your donations under the following rules:
- In total I will donate up to 500$.
- For every donator I will match up to 10$. I want to animate as many people as possible to donate to their favorite projects and by using this cap I can match at least 50 donations. Obviously, you can still donate more than 10$ 😀

Why the world must wake up to China’s science leadership
The main challenge for governments will be how to create frameworks and deals to gain equitable access to Chinese technology. Chinese negotiators drive a hard bargain. European and US policymakers will need to have a clear idea of what they want and how they want to get it.

I'm worried about Ineos' ulterior motives. It would not take a lot of change or investment to start up EOR there if any drilling equipment is still in place.
Yeah, I'm sure it'll work this time. It definitely won't hold just long enough for attention to go elsewhere...
Oil companies are really great at keeping things in oil wells, especially at sea. Just a fantastic track record
If it held natural gas, it should hold carbon dioxide. Especially as CO2 should react with a lot of the porus rocks and be absorbed.
That's why it's worth doing this kind of stuff though. Find out if it works now, so we know if it works when shit really goes down.
You don't understand... We already know it doesn't work. They've been doing this for decades, they've recently started green washing this fracking technique
And in case you didn't know, there's dozens of oil wells leaking right now. Some is oil in the ocean, some natural gas, some of it is burning underground... And there's just no known way to stop it. You can't just seal them back up when you're done, the structure of the rock is damaged
And all of the aside, this doesn't math even if it worked. It takes too much energy to pull CO2 out of the air, and to even make a dent we'd have to put up CO2 condensers on a percentage of earths surface... It's a dead end tech.
A distraction from the truth... We just have to reduce emissions. It's that simple, we have to do it before the systems that keep Earth stable flip and accelerate warming
And all of the aside, this doesn't math even if it worked. It takes too much energy to pull CO2 out of the air
They aren't taking it out of the air. They are taking it out of smoke stacks. It's far easier to pull it out of highly concentrated sources like smoke stacks than to try to pull it directly out of the atmosphere.
we'd have to put up CO2 condensers on a percentage of earths surface...
You're describing biofuels. Vegetation "condenses" the CO2 out of the atmosphere, incorporating it into carbohydrates.
Burning biofuels, we produce H2O and CO2 in the smoke stacks. Every pound of CO2 pulled from the smoke stack is a pound removed from the atmosphere.
Any introduction of fossil fuels into the process defeats the purpose, but the underlying technology is theoretically feasible with biofuel carbon sources.
Ok... Come on now, I know you've been propagandized, and propaganda works, but let's think this through
If you capture CO2 out of smokestacks, what have you done? You've slightly reduced emissions by going after the lowest hanging fruit possible
Are we going to do that to every power plant? Is every containment effort going to work? Does that actually fix the problem?
Ok… Come on now, I know you’ve been propagandized, and propaganda works, but let’s think this through
Please read what I wrote, not what you think I said.
If you capture CO2 out of smokestacks, what have you done?
It depends on where that carbon came from. If it came from petroleum or coal feedstocks, you've slightly reduced emissions. But, the carbon from biofuels originated from the atmosphere. Vegetation captured that CO2 directly from the atmosphere, and incorporated it into the biomass. Burning it converted the biomass into concentrated CO2 and H2O; we're capturing the concentrated CO2 out of that stream.
Again: this does not replace the need to suspend fossil fuels. But the specific process I described does, indeed, extract CO2 from the biosphere.
If we plow the vegetation under, we are burying the hydrogen and excess oxygen as well as the carbon. Burning it, we release the hydrogen (as water), but still bury the carbon.
The biofuel thing is just further nonsense.
If you're pulling CO2 out of the air, why in the world would you turn around and burn it???
That makes zero sense. For one, biofuels require processing, which means they might even be carbon positive before you burn it, and again, the scale needed to produce it in meaningful quantities is totally impractical.
And again, you can't just pump CO2 in the well and put an acme sized plug on it. The structure of the rock is destroyed by the process, it'll just leak out. We'd need an entirely new method to store it, which was never the plan here
This whole scheme is a fever dream designed to continue burning fossil fuels while siphoning away money from actual green movements
If you’re pulling CO2 out of the air, why in the world would you turn around and burn it???
Because the CO2 we pull out of the air is not in a form that we can feasibly sequester. It's padded with excessive hydrogen and oxygen into carbohydrate chains. When we burn that vegetation, we convert it to primarily to H2O, along with some CO2. Targeting the CO2 alone, we can sequester a lot more for the same energy and same volume.
The structure of the rock is destroyed by the process, it’ll just leak out.
That rock sequestered hydrocarbons from the biosphere for millions of years. It's not destroyed by the process. We use comparable methods for the strategic petroleum reserve and the national helium reserve.
This whole scheme is a fever dream designed to continue burning fossil fuels
That may be true. And yet, when used with non-fossil fuel sources, it does, indeed, serve to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, rather than simply reducing the emission of CO2.
I get what you're saying, it sounds very reasonable conceptually. But the problem is that this is a chain so riddled with weak links it's infeasible
You're right about biofuel... Except that biofuel is already refined biomass. The water is already removed, usually to become as close to pure hydrocarbons as possible. That's a far more efficient CO2 sink than pure CO2, because the oxygen component is in the atmosphere
It's insane to burn biofuels to lower atmospheric CO2.
And as far as the process being non-destructive... This technology was developed to use pressured CO2 to break smaller pockets in the rock, it's like using a pressure chamber to deflate foam. Except the rocks aren't plastic until your get a whole lot deeper, and the amount of pressure means the whole well is being pressurized beyond a level it was ever at naturally
Can a big cavity in the Earth store gasses? Sure. Can an oil well? Maybe... But so far, the answer is it leaks
As for your last point... If you instead ask if we should cram biofuels in the ground? That's a way better idea, there's something to it. It's not a solution, it doesn't scale to the levels where we can keep using fossil fuels everywhere, but it would sequester C02 very effectively. Kind of like it was before we dug it up and burned it
You're right about biofuel... Except that biofuel is already refined biomass. The water is already removed, usually to become as close to pure hydrocarbons as possible.
Hydrocarbons.
Chains of hydrogen and carbon.
Your comment demonstrates you're not fully understanding the chemistry of the combustion. If you remove the "water" I am talking about, you wouldn't have a hydrocarbon. You would have only carbon.
The "water" I am talking about is the "hydro" part of the "hydrocarbon". That "hydro" does not become CO2 when it burns. That "hydro" becomes H2O.
When burning lighter hydrocarbons, the majority of the exhaust in the stack is actually water vapor rather than CO2. Putting that hydrogen into the ground, unburnt, provides no additional benefit over putting just the CO2 into the ground. It merely fills up the reservoir faster, and requires even more energy for the same amount of carbon sequestration. Burning that biomass, it is (theoretically) possible for the energy recovered (after powering sequestration operations) to be a net positive.
Sequestering the unburned biofuel without recovering that energy, the operation must be a net negative.
Chains of hydrogen and carbon.
Yes, hydrogen, the smaller possible molecule, and carbon, which is smaller and lighter then oxygen
Hydrocsrbon chains are the most efficient way to store carbon, aside from something like graphite.
Who cares what it becomes when you burn it? CO2 is obviously not the optimal carbon sink, even before you start considering things like long term stability
Hydrocsrbon chains are the most efficient way to store carbo
Volumetric efficiency is not the relevant metric. Energy efficiency is much more important. The process you describe requires far greater energy input to complete the sequestration.
Furthermore, the physical properties are a problem. Biomass appropriate to this process is conveyed as a flammable, pelletized solid; CO2 is an inert fluid. One of these can be pumped via pipeline into empty subterranean reservoirs; the other cannot.
Do you work for them or something? Holy shit
Of course volumetric density is what matters. That and long term stability
You know what is really good at storing carbon underground forever? Fossil fuels. And if they can pull it out of the ground, they should have no problem putting it back in... It's a lot simpler
Sequestering a fluid is far simpler, safer, and more stable than attempting the same with a solid.
Your arguments seem to assume that what you're putting back into the ground is a fluid of some sort, either oil or gas.
Biomass is not typically handled as a fluid. Biomass is generally a solid. Picture "wood mulch", or "corn stalks". While the specific materials will vary, the most common format for these biofuels is as a pelletized commodity: The source material is physically pressed into small lumps and handled like coal, not oil or gas.
Conveying liquified CO2 through a pipe and into a reservoir is a trivial exercise. Conveying pelletized biomass into a suitable storage facility in quantities necessary to have a practical effect is not feasible.
What methods are you using to convert pelletized biomass into liquid hydrocarbons, suitable for pumping back into the ground? How is that method superior to pumping compressed CO2 instead?
You keep jumping back and forth between biofuel and biomass. You can bury solid biofuel, you can pump liquid biofuel, both are stable if you put them somewhere without much oxygen
Biomass is something different... Do it right and you can just use it as fertilizer. Just grow a bunch of algae and spray it over dry land... It's that easy. It'll feed the soil, which locks up a lot of carbon back into the food chain. Stack wood in a desert, who cares. There's so many better ways to do this
And CO2 is a fucking gas. Yes, it's liquid under pressure or at low enough temp... But it does not stay that way! We live in Earth, and most cavities aren't able to stay pressurized without leaking

You fail to comprehend the concept or need for "sequestering". What you are talking about perpetuates the atmospheric carbon cycle. It does not decrease atmospheric carbon dioxide. The mass biodegrades, re-releasing the carbon. "Sequestration" locks that carbon out of the biosphere. You are not talking about sequestration.
You keep jumping back and forth between biofuel and biomass.
Biomass is the raw substance. Biofuel is processed biomass. Processing it into a solid fuel is relatively trivial by little more than compressing it under relatively low pressure. Processing into liquid fuels is far more complicated and energy intensive than CO2 capture after combustion. For sequestration purposes, biomass would not be processed into liquid fuel. Liquid biofuels would only be used for transportation purposes.
And CO2 is a fucking gas
Not at the depths and pressures we're talking about.
But it does not stay that way! We live in Earth, and most cavities aren’t able to stay pressurized without leaking
I think you need to revisit that misconception. The cavities we're talking about certainly are.
You can bury solid biofuel,
Not in the volumes necessary for atmospheric carbon capture, no, we cannot. Furthermore, solid biofuels are not stable, certainly not as stable as CO2.
At this point, you just seem obscenely delusional to me. What you're saying is so far beyond reason I don't even know where to start.
You are not informed enough to have an opinion on the topic. I'm sorry, you're just spewing nonsense, you need to keep your opinions to yourself
At this point, you just seem obscenely delusional to me.
This does not surprise me. I mean, you suggested spraying carbon-rich "fertilizer" within the biosphere as a valid approach toward reducing atmospheric carbon.
Your basic understanding of the concept of "sequestration" is irreparably flawed.
Because it is:
There are four main EOR techniques: carbon dioxide (CO2) injection, gas injection, thermal EOR, and chemical EOR. More advanced, speculative EOR techniques are sometimes called quaternary recovery.[4][5][6][7] Carbon dioxide injection, known as CO2-EOR, is the most common method. In this method, CO2 is injected into a depleted oil field and is mostly left underground.CO2-EOR is usually performed using CO2 from naturally occurring underground deposits. It is also sometimes performed using CO2 captured from the flue gas of industrial facilities. When EOR is done using CO2 captured from flue gas, the process can prevent some emissions from escaping. However, there is controversy over whether the overall process is beneficial for the climate. EOR operations are energy-intensive, which leads to more emissions, and further emissions are produced when the recovered oil is burned.
From Wikipedia.
To remain in a liquid state CO2 needs to be kept under several hundred PSI of pressure and kept fairly cool. Even at only 40F CO2 boils at about 550 PSIG. In above ground tanks you need to worry about elevated ambient temperatures and if that CO2 tank gets to be over about 88F then that CO2 just straight up can't be liquified. Above 88F you suddenly have a tank of supercritical CO2 which gets a bit more interesting to store for various reasons.
The deep ocean it actually a fairly ideal place to store liquid CO2 because it is cold and already under an immense amount of pressure.
The energy requirements for storing one ton of co2 are many many times higher than the energy gained from generating one ton of co2 (by oil, gas, coal or biofuel).
So each MWh spent "storing co2" would be ten times more efficient if used to offset oil extraction to get one MWh less out in the first place.
This is wasteful greenwashing. If it wasn't, we'd have broken physics on the level of making perpetual motion machines.

There are many processes that we really can't just get rid of, so they will need carbon capture to ensure they're not hurting the environment.

The first is just taking the words from one language and changing to another.
The second is to actually make sure the text in the new language makes proper sense. Maybe the English article uses some analogy that does realy make sense in the new language. Localisation is to find some other suitable analogy to use instead, so that the point from the main article is kept, but it still makes sense.

But if you need to understand 99.9% then a human is required because a machine just will not understand the nuance or have a larger context unless instructed. Localizing is another issue too, you'll have to take into consideration the cultural nuance of the target language. Localizing software is even more niche because you're often limited in character count for the source language which machines often misunderstand, and the same limitation for the target language that a machine may not account for.
tl;dr - hire me if you want good localization

I even see comments about Firefox needing to be open source again!?!?
It FUCKING IS open source, anybody can fork it if they want to, the only thing they can't do is use the Firefox logo and name.
You are all a bunch of idiots!! (everybody who upvoted this trash blog)

in reply to Buffalox • • •I still use Firefox every day, but I don't trust the corporate overlords to do what's right long term. They seem to be getting greedy instead of listening to the user base. They've started including AI bullshit features for the sake of it, like grouping tabs by content that nobody asked for and that barely works for me. I'm not anti-Mozilla, but I sure am weary of it and would welcome an alternative.
I haven't come across any open source comments, but those seem pretty clueless.

in reply to Lemminary • • •You don't have to, if Mozilla really screwed the pooch with Firefox it would be forked.
Debian used to do it with IceWeasel over a petty thing like the copyright of the Firefox logo, which 100% has always been justified, and is necessary to distinguish between an official Firefox and a fork.
The AI bullshit features as you call them are completely non invasive, I always use the newest Firefox, and I never even noticed those features.
Stop the bullshitting and complaining over things are completely irrelevant. and will never ever have any negative influence on anything you do with Firefox.
I'm so sick of this lame community doing this over and over and over again, and it always turns out to be nothing.

in reply to Buffalox • • •And yet I had to turn them off in
about:config, not even in the regular settings. Why are the settings hidden? Why can't I turn them on if I want them? Why isn't opt-in and transparency their standard approach with such a controversial feature? Those are some serious dark patterns for a company advertising itself as user-friendly, that they had to backtrack on when they saw the community uproar. Now it's happening again, but on the developer side.
Irrelevant? I can't afford AI threads running in the background, hogging my memory and processing power away from my productivity apps for whatever bullshit they decide to add that barely relates to what I use a browser for. I don't live in a "first-world country" with standard hardware. That's the whole reason I use Firefox, for the respect for their users that I have grown accustomed to, which they now seem to want to ignore. It's a huge violation of trust that you're downplaying when they want to add things first and apologize later.
The bottom line is that their approach has shifted recently, and I have every right to criticize them for it when they say one thing and do another.

in reply to Lemminary • • •The "controversial" features:
These are all very modest in requirements even on an old phone. And the use is actually zero unless you use the function.
AFAIK all further AI functionalities are all optional.
Number one is particularly useful for blind people, a group that absolutely needs screen readers to work well.
So again stop the bullshitting, just because you are bullshitting yourself too doesn't make it better.
Either that or mention just one single specific function you "needed" to disable and why.
IMO your misunderstood whining is annoying.
Personally I use the translation function a lot, it is both very handy and very good, and I have used it for both Russian and Ukrainian and Chinese, and it works surprisingly well.
But maybe you speak every language on the planet, or find it more convenient to use an online translator, leaving unnecessary extra digital trails and requiring extra bandwidth?
How you don't find that feature useful is beyond me???
Victor
in reply to Buffalox • • •I rarely ever use translation features. I never visit sites which are in a language I don't understand. 🤷♂️ So this would be nice if it were opt in, I guess.
But I definitely have the processing power to run it. Buuut of course not everyone does.
Buffalox
in reply to Victor • • •It doesn't do shit if you don't use it, why would you want opt in for that?
The same goes for the other features.

Listen man, take it easy alright? I understand your stance, relax. Not trying to argue with your or get aggressive here. 🤝 We're cool. I'm on your side, I love Firefox.

in reply to Buffalox • • •Is it anti Firefox progranda to literally criticize them for reopening human contributed content with lesser quality AI generated one?
Your response to that criticism is to bring up another topic (Firefox being open source) and calling everyone idiots?

Ngl, I haven't read the article, I'm not defending or talking about Mozilla. But holy shit was that stupid logic.

in reply to Vespair • • •The reason it works is because Mozilla staff isn't going to offer to call any random person with a "stupid anecdote".
EDIT: FWIW, your logic is broken: while your imagined yoasif denies the claim, that differs from what Baffalox does in reality - they say "yes, but". Imagined yoasif just said "no."
Wouldn't have been critical of the form of your logic, but I mean -- you said my logic was stupid. I'm not sure you understood my logic.

There is NO WAY at all that the AI translations are worse. DeepL has been powering your human translators pretty much since it released, and LLMs are way better at translating than the average Joe.
Most of those weblate managed translations I mentioned were absolute dogshit. Done by humans, done with passion and good intention (most of the time, some of the languages we did know less about had stuff that had nothing to do with the original texts).
Like, people assume since they speak a language that they are able to translate that language and that is not true.
Unless Mozilla had full time, proper translators working, the quality con only increase by using AI.
And if they did, they can sack most of the team, leave one per language, and have them review the translations, and they would save massive amounts of money. And like it or not, open source needs money to run.

At Brave, he started with a Gecko offshoot but couldn't make it work and retreated to Chromium.
