Kristi Noem literally runs out of House hearing to avoid Dem questions

The Homeland Security secretary said she had to get to another meeting—which turned out to have been canceled.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem abruptly ended her time before the House Homeland Security Committee Thursday, angering lawmakers by stepping away from the hot seat to attend a highly anticipated meeting on the future of FEMA.

Except that meeting never happened.

The FEMA hearing was scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Noem was reportedly informed at 12:26 p.m. that it had been canceled, a DHS spokesperson told The Hill.

U.S. Helped to Weaken Report at U.N. Environment Talks, Participants Say

The Trump administration sided with officials from Saudi Arabia, Russia and Iran in a successful effort to block part of a United Nations report about the dire state of the planet because it called for phasing out fossil fuels, switching to clean energy and reducing plastics, according to two participants.

Good NAS solution for dummies / apple users?

My parents are looking into getting their own NAS to replace iCloud. I don't really have much experience with that, and zero experience with apple stuff. They are also not very techy, but at least enthusiastic.

Can sombody recommend easy NAS products where you basically just buy a device, do some basic setup, and then it functions as your at-home cloud? I don't want to get roped into doing too much admin for them, but they do already have DDNS for some other smart home crap. Bonus if it's non-US tech.

Personally I run a nextcloud server on a VPS that I could expand, that's not quite selfhosted, I don't know if that integrates well with apple though, are they better off if I just onboard them onto that?

Cheers in advance

I haven’t used them but umbrel looks promising: umbrel.com/

I’m using a synology and as others have said, it’s pretty friendly to non-techies, with lots of point and click configurations

UN rapporteur on sexual violence against women and girls claims no 'independent investigation' found rape committed on Oct. 7

Reem Alsalem, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, posted this:

“No Palestinian applauded rape in Gaza. No independent investigation found that rape took place on the 7th of October.”

Here is what Alsalem lays out when she expands on that X post in a recent interview and write-up:

  • She explains that the widely cited report by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC) was never meant to be investigative. Its mandate did not include forensic verification; it compiled allegations and secondary reports but did not independently prove anything.
  • She points to the Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which did have a fact-finding mandate and issued a report in June 2024. That body stated clearly that it “has not been able to independently verify such allegations, due to a lack of access to victims, witnesses and crime sites and the obstruction of its investigations by the Israeli authorities.”
  • She says, in plain language, that the narrative Israel constructed about mass rapes by Palestinians on October 7th has been “completely debunked by an independent body.”
  • And she adds that while Western governments and legacy media fixated on unverified claims about Palestinian rapists, they ignored the documented pattern of Israeli sexual violence against Palestinian men and women — a pattern backed by years of evidence.

Trump exasperated by his poor polling on the economy

in reply to SpontaneousCombustion

So he should look for himself what things cost and how businesses and citizens are doing instead of just listening to the spineless asskissers he's surrounded himself with.

in reply to SpontaneousCombustion

That's rich from the guys arresting people for protesting against killing children

Of course, why would I contribute to the large pool of liberal empire propaganda thats on lemmy already, if you want that lib comfort blanket of lies and false narratives you can go elsewhere. Maybe you're the fake one, as fake as AOCIA and Mamdani LMBO
in reply to Catalyst

There is a small group of accounts on .ml who keep posting this shit.

This is the first time I've ever seen an .mler criticizing this behavior.

in reply to Catalyst

It is absolutely the Marxist leninist position in countries all over the world to critically support the Russian Federation in this war.

p sure that's the gamble Ukraine is taking here. their assumption is that Russia won't, but they don't want to seem like they're the ones holding up an end to the war.
in reply to djsoren19

I mean if that's the game plan then they're doing it backwards given that Ukraine and the Europeans already rejected the US 28 point plan, while Russia just slow walked it saying they'd consider it as a basis for negotiation. It's the Ukrainians who look intransigent here, not the Russians. Meanwhile, the conditions on the front continue to deteriorate and Russia's position in the negotiation continues to get stronger.
