The hammer represents industrial workers, and the sickle represents the peasantry. It is a symbol of solidarity between industrial and agricultural workers, and can in no way be compared to Nazi symbolism.
To every person who disagrees: what about the French tricolor? It is also a revolutionary symbol that has a potentially negative association for many people.
The French did slavery and colonialism under the French tricolor, but does that overcome the progressive significance of the French revolution?
A symbol's meaning depends on who uses it. Unfortunately, this introduces complications when the point of a symbol is to signal who is using it. I am all for reclaiming symbols but the hammer and sickle especially is in a position of needing to be reclaimed and to be used responsibly one should signal their commitment to non-authoritarian communism simultaneously using other means.
I've done my best to signal to my followers (and to an extent the irl people in my life) to show that I don't believe in gulags, ethnic cleansing, or one party rule.
That's good. And I see your sickle is pride coded, which does a good job of signaling to libleft people (your presumed audience) that you have humanitarian commitments. I just think there are some flags that one shouldn't fly solo.
The Nazi flag was and is a symbol used exclusively by genocidal fascists.
Communist imagery is different.
In some countries, communists did cruel things, just as any other political tendency in history. I will concede that point. Stalin, Mao, and other such figures were terrible, and very few people deny this fact.
Additionally, communists have also done great things throughout history. They fought the fascists in WW2. They were (and to an extent, still are) an important part of the labor movement. In many European and Latin American countries, they helped fight for the restoration of democracy in places like Spain, Brazil, and Portugal. They fought for labor protections and the economic rights of the people in the global south (in some places, they still do!).
While I agree that it is necessary for any Marxist to reckon with the legacy of the past, I don't think that a comparison with Nazism is accurate.
My opinion is bound to be controversial, and if you have a reasonable objection to it I will always listen to it.
Just as long as it doesn't involve the Black Book of Communism, Austrian school economics/calculation arguments, or similar kinds of right wing talking points.
