One UI 8 fixes notification panel appearance for tablets!
Samsung has recently released the Galaxy Tab S11 series today, and it looks like that One UI 8 brings a long-awaited fix for the notification panel that has been plaguing tablet users since One UI 6.
Recently, a news report that 9to5Google made expressed their dissatisfaction about the current state of the notification panel, along with showcasing the notification panel for One UI 8 on tablets. You can refer to our current screenshot of the One UI 7 notification panel to see what weโre talking about.
As you can see, the notification panel consumes the entire screen, and it looks unoptimized for tablets. On Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, it took this into account perfectly.
Now, it looks like that One UI 8 will bring the long-awaited fix for notification panels, which will greatly make your tabletโs notification panel look really like what theyโre supposed to look like in tablets. Your notification panel will be a floating panel, similar to how the above picture talked about.
The wasted space that One UI 7 brought has been eliminated by letting you see whatโs behind the notification panel for increased productivity. This works very similarly to how Android 4.2 Jelly Bean handled this for tablets. However, the status bar icons and the carrier name (or the Wi-Fi AP name) stays at the top, just like One UI 7.
One UI 8 will roll out to tablets starting from the Galaxy Tab S10 series in October, and this fix will be available for the Tab S10, S9, and S8.

Congress Pushes DHS for Details on ICEโs New Facial Recognition App
Members of a congressional committee have demanded Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem for more information about Mobile Fortify, Immigration and Customs Enforcementโs (ICE) new facial recognition app, which taps into an unprecedented array of government databases and uses a system ordinarily reserved for when people enter or exit the U.S. 404 Media first revealed the app in June.
The Democratic lawmakers, Bennie G. Thompson, J. Luis Correa, and Shri Thanedar, are asking Noem a host of questions about the app, including what databases Mobile Fortify searches, the toolโs accuracy, and ICEโs legal basis for using the app to identify people outside of ports of entry, including U.S. citizens.
โCongress has long had concerns with the Federal governmentโs use of facial recognition technology and has regularly conducted oversight of how DHS utilizes this technology. The Mobile Fortify application has been deployed to the field while still in beta testing, which raises concerns about its accuracy,โ the letter from the Committee on Homeland Security and addressed to Noem reads.

404 Media first revealed Mobile Fortifyโs existence through leaked emails. Those emails showed that ICE officers could use the app to identify someone based on their fingerprints or face by just pointing a smartphone camera at them. The underlying Customs and Border Protection (CBP) system for the facial recognition part of the app is ordinarily used when people enter or leave the U.S. With Mobile Fortify, ICE then turned that capability inwards to identify people away from ports of entry.
In the footnotes of the letter, the lawmakers indicate they have a copy of a similar email, and the letter specifically cites 404 Mediaโs reporting.
In July 404 Media published a second report based on a Mobile Fortify user manual which explained the appโs capabilities and data sources in more detail. It said that Mobile Fortify uses a bank of 200 million images, and can pull up a subjectโs name, nationality, date of birth, โalienโ number, and whether a judge has marked them for deportation. It also showed that Mobile Fortify links databases from the State Department, CBP, the FBI, and states into a single tool. A โsuper queryโ feature lets ICE officers query multiple databases at once regarding โindividuals, vehicles, airplanes, vessels, addresses, phone numbers and firearms.โ
โFace recognition technology is notoriously unreliable, frequently generating false matches and resulting in a number of known wrongful arrests across the country. Immigration agents relying on this technology to try to identify people on the street is a recipe for disaster. Congress has never authorized DHS to use face recognition technology in this way, and the agency should shut this dangerous experiment down,โ Nathan Freed Wessler, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Unionโs Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, previously told 404 Media.
In their letter the lawmakers ask Noem questions about the appโs legality, including ICEโs legal basis to use the app to conduct biometric searches on people outside ports of entry; the databases Mobile Fortify has access to; any agreements between CBP and ICE about the app; information about the usage of the app, such as the frequency of ICE searches using the tool and what procedures ICE officials follow with the app; the appโs accuracy; and any policies or training to ICE agents on how to use the app.
โTo ensure ICE is equipped with technology that is accurate and in compliance with constitutional and legal requirements, the Committee on Homeland Security is conducting oversight of ICEโs deployment of the Mobile Fortify application,โ the letter says.
CBP acknowledged a request for comment but did not provide a response in time for publication. ICE did not respond to a request for comment.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is using a new mobile phone app that can identify someone based on their fingerprints or face by simply pointing a smartphone camera at them, according to internal ICE emails viewed by 404 Media. The underlying system used for the facial recognition component of the app is ordinarily used when people enter or exit the U.S. Now, that system is being used inside the U.S. by ICE to identify people in the field.The news highlights the Trump administrationโs growing use of sophisticated technology for its mass deportation efforts and ICEโs enforcement of its arrest quotas. The document also shows how biometric systems built for one reason can be repurposed for another, a constant fear and critique from civil liberties proponents of facial recognition tools.
โThe Mobile Fortify App empowers users with real-time biometric identity verification capabilities utilizing contactless fingerprints and facial images captured by the camera on an ICE issued cell phone without a secondary collection device,โ one of the emails, which was sent to all Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) personnel and seen by 404 Media, reads. ERO is the section of ICE specifically focused on deporting people.
The idea is for ICE to use this new tool to identify people whose identity ICE officers do not know. โThis information can be used to identify unknown subjects in the field,โ the email continues. โOfficers are reminded that the fingerprint matching is currently the most accurate biometric indicator available in the application,โ it adds, indicating that the fingerprint functionality is more accurate than the facial recognition component.
The emails also show the app has a โtraining range,โ a feature that lets ICE officers practice capturing facial images and fingerprints in a โtraining non-live environment.โ

Broadly, facial recognition tools work by taking one image to be tested and comparing it to a database of other images. Clearview AI for example, a commercially available facial recognition tool which is used by law enforcement but which doesnโt appear to be related to this ICE tool, compares a photo to a massive database of peoplesโ photos scraped from social media and the wider web.
For the facial recognition capability of this ICE tool, the emails say Mobile Fortify is using two government systems. The first is Customs and Border Protectionโs (CBP) Traveler Verification Service. As part of the Traveler Verification Service, CBP takes photos of peoplesโ faces when they enter the U.S. and compares these to previously collected ones. In an airport those can include photos from a passport, visa, or earlier CBP encounters, according to a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) previously published by CBP. With land crossings, that can include a gallery of โfrequentโ crossers for that port of entry, the PIA adds.
The second is the Seizure and Apprehension Workflow. This is what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) describes as an โintelligence aggregator,โ bringing together information related to searches and seizures.
โThe app uses CBP's Traveler Verification Service and the Seizure and Apprehension Workflow that contains the biometric gallery of individuals for whom CBP maintains derogatory information for facial recognition,โ the email reads. The exact definition of derogatory information in this context is not clear but 404 Media has previously reported on a database that ICE uses to find โderogatoryโ speech online.

One of the internal ICE emails says the app also has a โSuper Queryโ functionality, which is available to ICE officers who also have access to another CBP system called the Unified Passenger Login system (UPAX) which is used for passenger vetting. โThis additional tool allows the user to Super Query the facial or biometric results to better assist in determining the immigration status of the person in question,โ the email says.One of the emails says the tool uses DHSโs Automated Biometric Identification System (IDENT), the agencyโs central biometric system, for the fingerprint matches.
ICE did not respond to a request for comment. CBP acknowledged a request for comment but did not provide a response in time for publication.
ICE already has access to other facial recognition tools. A 404 Media review of public procurement records shows at least $3,614,000 worth of contracts between the agency and Clearview, for example. Clearviewโs tool may reveal a subjectโs name and social media profiles. But the companyโs results wonโt include information on a personโs immigration status or other data held by the government, whereas a government curated tool might.
โThis information can be used to identify unknown subjects in the field.โ
The Mobile Fortify app is just the latest example of ICE turning to technological solutions to support its deportation mission. 404 Media previously revealed Palantir, for example, was working with ICE to build a system to help find the location of people flagged for deportation as part of a $30 million contract extension. Palantir is now a โmore mature partner to ICE,โ according to leaked internal Palantir discussions 404 Media obtained.At first facial recognition was a capability only available to the government. Over the last several years the technology has proliferated enough that ordinary members of the public can access commercially available tools that reveal someoneโs identity just with a photo, or build their own tailored tools. On Tuesday 404 Media reported that a site called โFuckLAPD.comโ is able to identify police officers using a database of officer photos obtained through public records requests. The same artist who made that tool also created one called ICEspy, which is designed to identify employees of ICE, although the underlying data is out of date.
ICE officers are consistently wearing masks, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and baseball caps to mask their identity while detaining people.
According to internal ICE data obtained by NBC News, the Trump administration has arrested only 6 percent of known immigrant murderers. Meanwhile, ICE continues to detain nonviolent, working members of immigrant communities who have lived in the country for decades, particularly in Los Angeles. NBC News says almost half of the people currently in ICE custody have neither been convicted or charged with any crime.
