- Microsoft's investment into rust as first choice language for high perf/low level code is pretty cool
- the redis presentation about implementing a triemap in rust and migrating their c code to use it was also pretty interesting.
- There are a lot of talks about Interop with other languages and honestly I think they tilted the program a little too far towards that, because there's a lot of repeated ground between those talks.
- I'm really intrigued by both Zed's new GUI/app framework. It sounds like they took a different approach to the norm, which is good, because I think the norm in rust for this is a mess.
- Dioxus doesn't interest me much from the pov of being a GUI framework but the live updating code at runtime stuff seems neat.
Highlights of day 2 of rustconf, virtually again, imo:
- it was really interesting to get an overview of where redoxos is and is going. They've made some interesting architectural choices! I'm definitely more interested in the project than I was before. Maybe especially curious about relibc.
- The choose-your-own-adventure style talk about OSS incident response was fun and an interesting way to shake things up. I didn't watch it fully live so I didn't get to take part but I love that the presenter included the discord attendees in the decision points! Great remote-friendlieness!
- The Guardian's secure messaging app architecture overview was neat. Though I think the most interesting parts of it have nothing to do with rust. In particular, the use of the installed base of their app to drive fake encrypted messaging traffic to provide cover for whistleblowers is really cool.
- @rain's talk about future cancellation safety was really great! I liked how it boiled a bunch of common problems into really easy to digest examples. Definitely one of the best explanations of this topic I've seen.
- Day 2 only had one talk that was directly about c++ interop, "Fine Grained C++ Interop", and it was kind of a wide overview of available options, though somewhat focused on the presenters' own work on: crubit. There's some stuff in this talk that has bearing on future evolution of rust, and the presenters are core developers of the language, so this is one to check out if you want an idea of where things might go in the future at a lower level than just code generators and libraries. In particular they make a case for adding type-based function overloading to the language to improve that. I'm... Skeptical that that's a good idea, but they point out that we do already have something like it with traits.
- The final keynote was called "Vision Doc: The Next 10 Years of Rust" but it didn't really present a vision so much as a plan to get to a vision. I dunno really what to make of that.
- Montreal heck yeah!
Anyways allegedly this year the plan is to get talks up on YouTube within the month. If I see they're up I'll probably edit links into these posts later, so if you want to be notified if/when I do that you can like this post and Mastodon will let you know. 😀
"it was really interesting to get an overview of where redoxos is and is going"
oh, i'd really like to watch that one when it's up.
Illegal Alien Arrested With Arsenal Of Weapons, Ammunition, Cocaine
Illegal Alien Arrested With Arsenal Of Weapons, Ammunition, Cocaine
The optics for the Democratic Party are not great at the moment.
Whether it's vehemently rejecting President Trump's mission to restore law and order in crime-ridden progressive cities or opposing the deportation of criminal illegal aliens, the party of confused radicals - still unable to define what a woman is - bankrolled by rogue leftist billionaires and propped up by dark-money NGOs, has firmly branded itself as the party of "America Last."
If Democrats had their way, no illegal alien would ever be deported. That's because these third-worlders are seen as the party's future voting base to seize more political power. For a glimpse into exactly who these individuals are, look no further than a shocking new report out of Charleston, South Carolina.
Local outlet counton2.com/news/local-news/d…
reported earlier this week that deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office pulled over Joaquin Lopez-Rubio for speeding. Deputies say Lopez-Rubio is in the country illegally, and what they found in his vehicle was shocking.
Here's more from the local station:
Lopez-Rubio was detained for reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a valid license. It was also determined that he was a "Mexican national in the United States illegally," according to the sheriff's office.
During a search of Lopez-Rubio's vehicle, deputies and troopers found three clear plastic bags with 8.6 gross grams of cocaine, ten firearms, and multiple magazines with various rounds of ammunition.

Countries of the "coalition of the willing" will supply Ukraine with long-range missiles — Keir Starmer
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom emphasized that this decision should strengthen military aid to Kyiv and increase pressure on moscow. The exact systems referred to are not specified.
He also accused putin of deliberately delaying peace negotiations and stated that allies must force russia to cease hostilities.

> to prove the null hypothesis in such a case would involve deliberately killing tens of thousands of children by infecting millions with diseases known to cause death
1) Not at all. You seem to be assuming placebo-controlled studies. These are many other ways epidemiologists could investigate this.
2) This is begging the question. Maybe vaccination is deliberately infecting millions? The only way to know for sure is to do science that doesn't set out to prove its own assumptions.
“Infecting” with what? In the 1970s, a poorly conducted polio immunization campaign in Egypt resulted in an outbreak of hepatitis. This led to a high rate of refusal of vaccines in Egypt, and an overall higher rate of diseases which can be vaccinated against, with accompanying higher disease mortality and shorter lifespans, than in comparable countries.

Repairing a Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer
Over on his YouTube channel our hacker [Jerry Walker] repairs a Tektronix 577 curve tracer.
A curve tracer is a piece of equipment which plots I-V (current vs voltage) curves, among other things. This old bit of Tektronix kit is rocking a CRT, which dates it. According to TekWiki the Tektronix 577 was introduced in 1972.
In this repair video [Jerry] goes to use his Tektronix 577 only to discover that it is nonfunctional. He begins his investigation by popping off the back cover and checking out the voltages across the voltage rails. His investigations suggest a short circuit. He pushes on that which means he has to remove the side panel to follow a lead into the guts of the machine.
Then, in order to find the shorted component he suspect exists, [Jerry] breaks out the old thermal cam. And the thermal cam leads to the fault: a shorted tantalum capacitor, just as he suspected to begin with! After replacing the shorted tantalum capacitor this old workhorse is like new.
There are probably quite a number of repair lessons in this video, but we think that an important takeaway is just how useful a thermal camera can be when it comes time for fault finding. If you’re interested in electronics repair a thermal cam is a good trick to have up your sleeve, it excels at finding short circuits.

The blue half of the image contains the star cluster named Pismis 24, which resides in the core of the Lobster Nebula (aka NGC 6357), ~5,500 light-years away, within our Milky Way galaxy.
At the heart of the glittering cluster is binary star Pismis 24-1, 74 and 66 solar masses resp.
The jagged "mountains," made of gas and dust, are sculpted by fierce radiation from the young hot stars.
