Just a thought, but if we're worried about competing with China, we might want to educate the population, invest in public health, create great infrastructure, build low-cost, high-speed transit, and provide the underlying conditions for people to do great, creative, well-informed work nationwide.

Neutrino masses are weird. First we thought neutrinos were massless. Then we thought they had positive mass. Then some evidence pointed to an IMAGINARY mass, which was crazy. That went away as the data got better. Now some people say evidence from cosmology points to a NEGATIVE mass. But I think this is even more crazy.

You may think Einstein said

E = mc²

but actually his theory, special relativity, says

E² = m²c⁴ + p²c²

where p is momentum. So you can measure energy and momentum and figure out the SQUARE of mass - not mass itself.

You might think mass creates gravity, but actually it's energy and momentum that create gravity, and we use the above equation to figure out mass from those.... or really the mass SQUARED.

If the mass squared is negative, you've got something with imaginary mass, which is called a tachyon. Tachyons are bad - take my word for it.

But if the mass squared is positive, the mass itself could be positive or negative. And it doesn't really matter which, since in special relativity all that matters is mass squared!

You might think we can figure out mass just by *weighing* something - that is, using gravity. But in general relativity, gravity interacts with energy and momentum. So those are what matter. We work out mass from the formula above... but actually, it only tells us mass squared.

Some new experiments in cosmology are somewhat in conflict with each other, in ways that supposedly could be explained by neutrinos with negative mass. But I don't buy it.

I could be confused. I'll think about it more....

The way Fedilab handles lists is kind of a trip, though. It remembers the last scroll permission, so there are new posts up in addition to older posts I hadn't read down. I click into that section and start reading and then am like, "why are these posts all from 2 days ago... Oh, right."

Last Week's Meals: Ginger Pork

This was absolutely fantastic. A nice sweet glaze with salty pork, it just worked great. Well, it would have been great if I'd let the glaze reduce a lot more. I suck at judging when a sauce is ready. It was too liquidy. Still, it was tasty!

Title: Ginger Pork
Yield: 3 servings
Cooking Time: 25 minutes
Category: Entree
Cuisine: Asian/Japanese
Rating: 5/5 stars
Source: Personal Trainer: Cooking

---
Ingredients
---
18 oz pork loin
1 tbsp cooking oil
4 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp mirin
1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp sake
1 2/3 tbsp ginger juice
12 leaves butter lettuce
6 wedges tomatoes

---
Instructions
---

1 - Peel off the green lettuce leaves, wash them, and then dry off the
water with paper towels.
2 - Put the soy sauce in a deep dish.
3 - Add the mirin and sugar to the soy sauce.
4 - Next add the sake and the ginger juice, then mix.
5 - Using the tip of the kitchen knife, make incisions in the pork to
cut through the fat and into the lean meat.
6 - Soak the pork in the sauce for 5 minutes, occasionally turning it
over.
7 - Heat the cooking oil in the frying pan over moderate heat.
8 - Dry the pork off with paper towels, then saute it in the pan until
browned on the underside.
9 - Turn the pork over and cook the other side in the same way.
10 - Transfer the cooked pork to a dish.
11 - Quickly clean the frying pan, then heat the sauce left in the
deep dish over high heat.
12 - Bring to a brief boil, then reduce to low heat.
13 - Return the pork to the frying pan, coat it with the sauce, then
turn off the heat.
14 - Place some green lettuce leaves on serving dishes, then place the
pork on top and add a wedge of tomator. It's ready to eat!

Daniel Silva Saraiva, a 23-year-old temporary worker, died at the Faurecia automobile parts factory in São José dos Pinhais, Brazil, on August 22, 2025, after being crushed by a 1.5-ton press. The circumstances surrounding his death point to gross negligence and cost-cutting measures by Faurecia and its staffing agency, Agência Palladium.

Workers had previously reported the malfunctioning of the press that killed Saraiva, highlighting a dangerous disregard for safety protocols. This negligence directly contributed to the fatal accident. The Socialist Youth League (LJS) has condemned the incident, stating that it exposes the brutal exploitation faced by young workers in Brazil’s industrial sector, where employers prioritize profit over employee well-being.

Saraiva’s death is not an isolated incident. It reflects a broader trend of precarious labor conditions and inadequate safety measures prevalent in the Brazilian auto industry. The LJS is calling for a thorough investigation into Faurecia’s safety practices and demanding accountability for Saraiva’s preventable death. They emphasize the need for workers to organize and fight for improved safety standards and protections against exploitation.

The article accuses Tony Blair of extensive war crimes and corruption, citing his role in the Iraq War and his personal enrichment through various business ventures after leaving office. It alleges Blair knowingly presented false information to justify the invasion of Iraq, resulting in immense suffering and instability in the region. The article further claims Blair profited from his position, amassing wealth through speaking engagements and consultancy work with authoritarian regimes, effectively monetizing his legacy of war.

The piece also criticizes Keir Starmer, the current Labour Prime Minister, for being an admirer and disciple of Blair. It suggests Starmer, by emulating Blair, is complicit in his predecessor’s alleged war crimes and perpetuates a legacy of political opportunism and disregard for international law. The article paints a bleak picture of British politics, arguing that both Blair and Starmer represent a continuity of unethical and destructive policies masked by a veneer of respectability. It implies that Starmer’s leadership will likely continue the pattern of prioritizing personal gain and geopolitical maneuvering over ethical considerations and human welfare.

Workers across various sectors and countries are engaging in strikes and protests due to deteriorating economic conditions and disputes over pay and working conditions. In London, transport workers initiated strikes affecting the transport network due to disagreements over pay and conditions. Simultaneously, in Iran, oil workers at the Gachsaran Oil and Gas company and Offshore Oil Company joined escalating protests over collapsing living conditions, triggering sanctions from the UK, France, and Germany. Adding to the global unrest, lecturers at a university in Ondo State, Nigeria, commenced an indefinite strike to protest unpaid salary arrears and insufficient funding for their institution. These events collectively highlight a growing wave of labor unrest driven by economic hardship and unresolved labor disputes across different geographical locations and industries.

Highlights of rustconf (from virtual attendance due to fascism) day one, imo:
- Microsoft's investment into rust as first choice language for high perf/low level code is pretty cool
- the redis presentation about implementing a triemap in rust and migrating their c code to use it was also pretty interesting.
- There are a lot of talks about Interop with other languages and honestly I think they tilted the program a little too far towards that, because there's a lot of repeated ground between those talks.
- I'm really intrigued by both Zed's new GUI/app framework. It sounds like they took a different approach to the norm, which is good, because I think the norm in rust for this is a mess.
- Dioxus doesn't interest me much from the pov of being a GUI framework but the live updating code at runtime stuff seems neat.

Highlights of day 2 of rustconf, virtually again, imo:
- it was really interesting to get an overview of where redoxos is and is going. They've made some interesting architectural choices! I'm definitely more interested in the project than I was before. Maybe especially curious about relibc.
- The choose-your-own-adventure style talk about OSS incident response was fun and an interesting way to shake things up. I didn't watch it fully live so I didn't get to take part but I love that the presenter included the discord attendees in the decision points! Great remote-friendlieness!
- The Guardian's secure messaging app architecture overview was neat. Though I think the most interesting parts of it have nothing to do with rust. In particular, the use of the installed base of their app to drive fake encrypted messaging traffic to provide cover for whistleblowers is really cool.
- @rain's talk about future cancellation safety was really great! I liked how it boiled a bunch of common problems into really easy to digest examples. Definitely one of the best explanations of this topic I've seen.
- Day 2 only had one talk that was directly about c++ interop, "Fine Grained C++ Interop", and it was kind of a wide overview of available options, though somewhat focused on the presenters' own work on: crubit. There's some stuff in this talk that has bearing on future evolution of rust, and the presenters are core developers of the language, so this is one to check out if you want an idea of where things might go in the future at a lower level than just code generators and libraries. In particular they make a case for adding type-based function overloading to the language to improve that. I'm... Skeptical that that's a good idea, but they point out that we do already have something like it with traits.
- The final keynote was called "Vision Doc: The Next 10 Years of Rust" but it didn't really present a vision so much as a plan to get to a vision. I dunno really what to make of that.
- Montreal heck yeah!

Anyways allegedly this year the plan is to get talks up on YouTube within the month. If I see they're up I'll probably edit links into these posts later, so if you want to be notified if/when I do that you can like this post and Mastodon will let you know. 😀

Illegal Alien Arrested With Arsenal Of Weapons, Ammunition, Cocaine

Illegal Alien Arrested With Arsenal Of Weapons, Ammunition, Cocaine

The optics for the Democratic Party are not great at the moment.

Whether it's vehemently rejecting President Trump's mission to restore law and order in crime-ridden progressive cities or opposing the deportation of criminal illegal aliens, the party of confused radicals - still unable to define what a woman is - bankrolled by rogue leftist billionaires and propped up by dark-money NGOs, has firmly branded itself as the party of "America Last."

If Democrats had their way, no illegal alien would ever be deported. That's because these third-worlders are seen as the party's future voting base to seize more political power. For a glimpse into exactly who these individuals are, look no further than a shocking new report out of Charleston, South Carolina.

Local outlet counton2.com/news/local-news/d…
reported earlier this week that deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office pulled over Joaquin Lopez-Rubio for speeding. Deputies say Lopez-Rubio is in the country illegally, and what they found in his vehicle was shocking.

Here's more from the local station:

Lopez-Rubio was detained for reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a valid license. It was also determined that he was a "Mexican national in the United States illegally," according to the sheriff's office.

During a search of Lopez-Rubio's vehicle, deputies and troopers found three clear plastic bags with 8.6 gross grams of cocaine, ten firearms, and multiple magazines with various rounds of ammunition.

in reply to Jones

in reply to Jones

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

in reply to Jones

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

in reply to Jones

in reply to Jones

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

in reply to Jones

Jones reshared this.

in reply to Jones

in reply to ragazza senza grazie
