This is an extraordinary article in many ways. But: 1) “it left unarmed North Koreans dead” is a polite way of phrasing “SEALS killed them.” 2) It isn’t until paragraph 59 that the NYT tells us the people the seals killed were civilians. They were fishing, and America killed them.

We were talking about them last night- the venue we were at (The Cellar, Aberteifi) had a signed poster from their appearance there in 2014, and I was wondering if any of the original members were still in the band by that point, and “of course not” is the answer, I now see.
in reply to Nic Dafis

@nic I'm not even sure if any of the original members are still alive.

The U.S. will supply Ukraine with 840 ERAM long-range cruise missiles by October 2026, part of a larger deal cleared for up to 3,550. The missiles, compatible with both F-16s and MiG-29s, mark a major step in fast-track weapons development and mass production.

Cool. But at some point, innovative Ukrainian defense technology will likely surpass that of the US.

@alfredo The last veterans with any claim to "defending freedom" were deployed in WWII.

I get really tired of being told to thank people who, following orders, went and ruined various pieces of the world and our reputation abroad as though we'd fought for anything but oil and colonialism since.

@gooba42 @alfredo Sorry. Taking a stand against policymakers who start wars of aggression is what we do. But attacking our friends and neighbors is not cool. You don't know somebody else's situation. Many of the strongest opponents of US imperialism fought in its conflicts. Don't be a dick.

This will be interesting every time UK government rounds up people and throws them in jail or arrest them. More people will show up at the next demonstration.

What’s next? I think they are going to have to put a fence around 10 Downing St. and declare everything on the other side of prison.

England will prevail!

Stop Killing Games

Pirate Parties International supports the
Stop Killing Games Initiative.

Let people keep playing the games they bought!
Provide gamers basic consumer rights.
Give clear notice before shutting down a game.
Offer refunds when access is removed.
Provide offline play or patches when servers close.
Be transparent about data use.
Protect game history and preservation.

Stop Killing Games

Recent commentary by a Youtube games vlogger named “Pirate Software” misstates these aims. The Stop Killing Games Initiative was created to foster an open, inclusive, and democratic dialogue around the future of gaming culture, policy, and rights. Pirate Software’s portrayal distorts these core principles and risks undermining the credibility and positive aims of the initiative.

These recent portrayals of the project are misleading and risk creating division. The initiative’s true goal is to protect consumer rights and ensure game preservation. It is meant to be an open conversation, not an attack on game developers.

We want to build a positive movement. This requires collaboration between gamers, developers, and publishers to find fair solutions. Our focus is on digital rights, transparency, and clear policy.

We urge the gaming community to focus on these core principles. Let’s work together to build a future where games are preserved and gamers’ rights are respected.

The Stop Killing Games Initiative is, and must remain, a space for empowering the global gaming community through collaboration, openness, and respect. We call on all stakeholders to reject divisive or harmful misrepresentations and continue building a future where the voices of gamers everywhere are heard and respected.

a year ago i asked some friends 'do you know any product jobs in climate tech that aren't about greenwashing, or trading carbon credits' and it was 'uh not really'

anyway, today i am very glad i ended up where i did because if i had to live through *all of this* while *hating my job* (or having none, which would have meant i couldn't stay), it would have been much, much harder.

if you've recently lost your job, i'm sorry things suck, i've been there, don't be afraid to reach out for help, sympathy, connections.

there is nothing wrong with *you*. i had to remind myself through the constant rejections and ghosting and bad fits: i'm like a very unique restaurant serving a very specific cuisine that i like. some times in my career i can adjust it to cater to a broader audience. sometimes you have to do that. but not everybody will like what you're cooking.

in reply to Adrianna Tan

the best career advice i got was, somehow, from my immigration attorney.

he was like, 'there are tens of thousands of product managers in this city. tell me in a few words why what you do matters.'

anyway, that advice helped me get a job i like (i am a product manager with private and public sector experience, who builds great software for critical services in mission-driven orgs); and get my immigration status sorted (i am one of the few people who do this type of work who also have global experience on how to think about AI and its impact on people and society).

unfortunately, this hellscape demands that we all clamor to put a stake in the ground to show why we are special. tech especially has changed and isn't 'you can have a job if you can touch a computer' anymore.

like with many things about the hellscape, asking for help, reaching out to people, making connections if possible, are things that help. i understand it can be challenging for some people.

here's my favorite line: "By 2005, the pages where editors stipulated policy and debated articles were found to be growing faster than the articles themselves. Today, this administrative backend is at least five times the size of the encyclopedia it supports."

I've always argued that the tools we build at the WMF sometimes are too focused on "encyclopedic content" and neglect the fact that the MediaWiki platform is used 5x more often for the meta-work of administering the project. Collaborative tools are important for organizing the work, even if they are not used directly to write the encyclopedic content.

Rising River Temperatures Threaten Paris's Water-Based Building Cooling Network news.slashdot.org/story/25/09/…

Gravity Storm – First Mission just landed on Steam today—a 2D run-’n-gun platformer with a gravity-flipping twist.

Think Mega Man with VVVVVV’s inversion gimmick. That’s the DNA here. You run, jump, shoot, and dash like the Blue Bomber, but you also slam gravity on demand—dropping to the ceiling or crashing back down—turning every corridor into a puzzle of timing and positioning.

Story is wafer-thin: you’re Project Gravity Storm, a machine built to manipulate gravity. But nobody comes here for lore.

The real star is the level design—tight, clever, grin-inducing. Five stages, two bosses, and a grab-bag of modes: Story, Time Attack, Score Attack, Custom, and even a Boss Rush. There’s also a built-in art gallery featuring community illustrations.

Visually, it doesn’t chase the NES look. Instead it feels like early 90s DOS shareware—closer to Alien Carnage or Bio Menace, though a bit smoother.

Audio is pure modern chiptune. Not era-perfect, but the drive is there. The sound effects, though—they do have that crunchy DOS vibe, like something you’d have heard through a Sound Blaster 16.

Controls: yes, you can do keyboard, but it gets busy with all the gravity flips, dashes, and supers. The dev openly recommends a gamepad, and both Xbox and PlayStation pads work out of the box. Controls are fully remappable, vibration and screen-shake can be toggled, and there’s an in-game tutorial so you don’t fumble through.

Tech side: Windows-only natively, built in GameMaker. I got it running on Linux just fine via Proton. The footprint is tiny—200 MB install, Intel HD 4000 minimum. Basically anything from the last decade can run it.

This is Jampley Games’ first release. And while reviews haven’t rolled in yet, I’m impressed. Not just with the concept, but with the polish. It even ships with twelve Steam achievements, and the dev has already outlined a roadmap: leaderboards, an enemy bestiary, an epilogue stage, and the soundtrack release.

Price is C$8.99 (US$6.99). And with a free demo available, you don’t even need to take my word for it. But if you want my verdict? This is marvelous. A compact, arcade-forward platformer that delivers where it counts. Highly recommended.

Weirdly, all the federal chaos has finally gotten me to agree with the (now nearly extinct) actual conservatives who thought the federal government was too big.

The amount of damage MAGA is able to do is enormous. At this point, I think things like public health should be inter-state collaborations, not federal. Probably a bunch of other things, too. The US right just can't be trusted to care about citizens, and the Senate and the electoral college will keep giving them disproportionate power until long after I'm in the ground. But blue states can still make good things happen.

in reply to William Pietri

We failed reconstruction and we have consistently failed to hold Confederate descendents accountable. They have slowly gained power through propaganda. At this point we are living in a modern Confederacy rather than the United States won by the Union in the civil war. The orange felon's plans to deploy troops from Confederate States against Chicago and DC is the final kicker of how bad we've lost. Many of us have been aware and tried to course correct but have been sabotaged.
