My son is into playing GeoGuessr where you get a random Google street view and guess where you are based on clues in the scene. I thought I had a fairly good sense of geography but through watching him play I realized how bad I am at placing countries on a map. So I've been shamed into making sure I know where every country is and it has been surprisingly fun. oh nice, yeah, I really like learning one or two bits of trivia about each country. For some reason that helps give it more detail and makes it easier to remember the location--especially if I have trouble placing it a few times
after doing these quizzes a few times I realize that there are certain countries where I just don't know enough about them and I confuse them with other countries that start with the same letter but are nowhere near them.

I'M REALLY BAD AT THIS. It looks like I'm really bad at all the other continents too (except mine). I'm like a D+ geography person. If I can just figure out which one is Guinea-Bissau, which one is Guinea and which one is Equatorial Guinea, I will be doing better. Also Mali vs Malawi and Mauritius vs Mauritania.
You can do it! Malawi is next to a big lake where many freshwater tropical fish come from. Equatorial Guinea is far away from the others and it’s the only primarily Spanish speaking country in Africa. Guinea-Bissau is ironically the smaller one of the two close Guineas even though it has a longer name. Mauritania and Mali are desert neighbors. Mauritius is a tropical vacation island = delicious?
These are all excellent facts! Part of this is me kicking myself for missing a question about Guinea-Bissau in my trivia league and being last in my group this season.

Basta guardare (e leggere) l'immagine che accompagna il post per comprendere il livello zero dei nostri eroi. In pratica dice che, dopo l'iniziale forzante astronomica millenaria, la concentrazione di CO2 va in tandem (che amorosi...) con la temperatura.
L'aumento di quest'ultima causa un accelerazione del ciclo del carbonio naturale che provoca un'aumento della concentrazione di CO2 e quindi un'ulteriore incremento termico.
Per carità, tutto giusto, però almeno togliete il grafico, perché mostra il picco di concentrazione attuale ("current"), talmente abnorme da far deragliare il romantico tandem. Insomma, cara EPA, per millenni anidride carbonica e temperatura sono andate a braccetto…
…e ora che la CO2 è schizzata non mi spieghi neppure il perché? Orsù… La cosa più comica è che il grafico in oggetto (relativo al solo Antartide, peraltro), è stato preso da un lavoro della Royal Society and the US National Academy of Sciences, il cui incipit è il seguente (ve lo traduco):

I pulled all my e-books off Kindle yesterday because of this. It effectively ends my writing career because, despite everyone complaining that Amazon is evil... nobody buys books from the many other stores my books are available on.
I am sad. I am angry. I am *exhausted*.
I am ONE indie author. I am nobody. My protest is utterly meaningless in the face of this ever-expanding AI takeover. Unless all indies do this, and all tradpub authors pressure their publishers to fight Amazon, my pulling my books is not going to do a damned thing to make Amazon stop doing this. All it will do is end whatever tiny little chance I might still have had at having a real writing career.
But I am so sick of AI being shoved into every aspect of my life and not even having the right to opt out of it. This is the ONLY protest I CAN make. So that's what I'm doing. And at least I know they won't be able to use my books this way.

Authors are not okay, folks. Between AI destroying the industry and wrecking people's careers, and the big spike in piracy since people decided the solution to boycotting Amazon is *stealing* from people who are literally making *pennies* (21 cents per day... that's what I made in book sales in 2025. I calculated it yesterday), we are not okay.
Please, please, please support authors. If you can buy books in places other than Amazon, please do so. If you can't buy books, please borrow them from your library. Request that your library pick up titles from your favourite authors (most libraries have form you can fill out to do that). Leave reviews everywhere you can. Sign up for author newsletters, and follow authors on social media. Repost social media content. Talk about your favourite books - help other people discover that they exist! All of these things *matter*, and you really have NO idea how much they mean to most authors.
As a sometimes-published author, may I suggest every author be selling their books *through their own websites*? Publish on demand, e-commerce plugins for blogs, etc. Then we don't have Amazon and other corporate monopolists taking a big percentage off the top before we see any money...
I WISH that authors would do this! Sell me a DRM-free copy of an ebook and let me use a third party e-reader so I'm not stuck in the Kindle-verse (which I refuse to use ANYWAY and stripped the DRM from all the books I had that I could).
@arthfach @dancingtreefrog Many indies do have direct-from-author shops if you check social media bios for link trees. Most don't push those sites as heavily because they just don't generate the sales numbers (and, importantly, the *visibility*) that Amazon does.
Part of the issue is that places like Amazon are still the best way for a chance to get your book *seen* by people. Nobody is going to buy a book that they don't know exists. And marketing is an absolute nightmare for most indies. Marketing is a completely different skill set than writing. And a lot of us just don't have those skills. And, yes, we could probably learn them... BUT... most of us already have at least one day job because we like to eat and ensure our kids have a roof over their heads and only a tiny handful of authors actually make enough from writing to pay bills. And then in, in whatever time we can steal in between day job(s) and other responsibilities, we are trying to write more books. Trying to market on top of that is... difficult.
So, if enough people buy an author's book to push it up the lists, *other* people might also see it. That doesn't happen with buy-direct author shops. That's why it *really* matters when readers share reviews and rave on their own social media accounts about books they've read and loved, or mention them to other people. That grassroots book love means everything to authors. It really does.
@dancingtreefrog these days, I *do not* buy an ebook unless it is through an author's website. If it's not available for purchase thay way, I check it out from my library through libby. And if I can't do that, I'm just not reading it 🤷♀️. First of all, if I'm paying for a file, I like to *own* it.

I don't know how much they share with authors, but Weightless Books isn't a big corporate entity. I think it's mostly one person.
It's also one of the few sites for SF/fantasy magazine subscriptions after Amazon dumped subscriptions. And each magazine issue is available as a downloadable, DRM-free file.

I don’t use Kindle because it does not accept material that is available elsewhere without tolls. I use a license that instead obliges me to make the digital version available without tolls, at least on my own channel. And I won’t even mention the other license, which requires the digital version to be available everywhere. From this perspective, Kindle is effectively useless for open science. Also, the link you shared is behind a paywall.
If it’s any consolation, the action of one person can plant a seed that grows into a forest. Your choice may have more power and impact than you realize. Even if it’s not immediately apparent.
Personally, I think the current attempt to repeal Section 230 is much more serious then previous attempts due to one simple reason: Gaza.
US politicians are desperate to regain control over the free flow of information online after the role social media played in activism around Gaza.
The status quo on Israel has been threatened, politicians are scared.
Other repeal attempts weren’t responding to immediate political threats… this is a response to a very real and serious fear that social media is destabilizing the status quo, negatively affecting politicians that created the environment for the Gaza genocide to take place.
I personally believe, compared to other Section 230 repeal attempts, this one is more likely to succeed. May still be an uphill battle. We’ll have to see. But Section 230 antagonism is bipartisan. And if the Obamacare subsidies were trashed… I’m not hopeful in politicians “doing the right thing.”

Stanchissima. Oggi ero ad un evento in strada, ho preso una valanga di freddo, ma è stato tutto molto interessante.
