@davidallengreen on attempts to 'reform' the European Convention of Human Rights:

'some political leaders appear to see limiting rights as a way of combatting the rise of illiberal politics. The response should instead be to promote & defend fundamental rights.... Sometimes one has to defend rather than appease. The framers of the ECHR knew this in 1950 & it remains true 75 years later'!

You don't defend human rights by watering them down!

@ReggieHere @RobertoArchimboldi The ECHR is only anti-communist if we're talking about Leninist, Stalinist or Maoist communism, i.e. a totalitarian state hell bent on the eradication of the individual. Democratic forms of socialism are totally compatible with liberalism. In fact many liberals are progressive social liberals because there is nothing that impinges on liberty more than poverty, racism, sexism and wealth inequality.
in reply to Benoît Jones

@huxley @ReggieHere I am fairly in favour of the ECHR, but look at Article 1 of protocol 1. It is a fairly strong protection of private property and would, for example, probably prevent a future left wing government from nationalising Thames Water by appropriating it. It also just doesn't protect classically liberal rights, like for example, freedom of movement, despite the wording of Article 8. It allows a great deal of state intervention in the affairs of the people within its jurisdiction.

It is not that I am against liberalism. I think two things: 1. The British establishment is not now and has not been liberal for a very long time. 2. The ECHR is not such a liberal document. It was conceived to protect western European states from a very particular threat. They have always chaffed at its constraints.

Some of the early cases are really interesting. You have the UK shocked to discover that human rights might apply in the colonies (Cyprus in particular). Note that the court did not uphold the complaint. They went the other way with a complaint against Greece under the colonels. Both were about whether derogation from the treaty was legitimate.

wipe all "smart" and "intelligent" tech out of existence. All devices and apps that patronize their users. All tech that takes decisions, learning and skills from us. Plus all surveillance tech and techbro shenanigans that only exist as life-extending measures for the fossil industry by eating up all the energy for no reason.

Hell, if you ask me, just get rid of all computers, all microchips, all hightech - except for medical devices, inclusivity tech and some stuff used for science.
Lets go back to the age of face-to-face conversations and human connection. I miss people.

RE: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@82mhz/11572…

In my experience, 95% of the situations I follow could transition to totally open-source solutions without major problems. Some others could do so by implementing a progressive plan.

The limitation is almost always human: people accustomed to working in a certain way for years, and a lack of willingness and commitment to change, even minimal change. If in private sectors, this happens under the "threat" of a drop in productivity. If in public sectors, under the threat of severe inefficiencies.

I saw a local election won (in part) thanks to a promise not to change anything.

Inertia, at times, causes incalculable damage.

My home state of Bavaria is planning to spend 1 billion Euros in the next five years on Microsoft products. One fucking billion Euros!
Meanwhile, the state of Schleswig Holstein has been transitioning to open source software and estimates that it will save them around 15 million Euros a year.

Maybe it's time to move. People up North seem to be smarter.

Everything THIS! It's why my manager at work doesn't want me to introduce FreeBSD & ZFS because of fears "nobody would be able to understand how to manage it".

in reply to Stefano Marinelli

Unfortunately it's the public perception that is a significant barrier to mass open source adoption.

Case in point: In my last job I was a sysadmin for a US Government agency. My team was responsible for central IT operations and predominantly a Microsoft shop with the exception of DNS, SFTP, and some web development platforms which were RHEL and Solaris, respectively.

The federal IT manager who oversaw my team, along with the other federal IT managers, were anti-open source for fear of massive cyber attacks. Their rationale was (and I am not kidding), "If it's open source, that means the Chinese and Russians have access to the source code!"

So, instead they ran Windows on servers and desktops, and defaulted to Chrome as the standard browser.

With the exception of specific applications which *required* Windows everything could have *easily* been replaced by RHEL, including the security configurations and smart card authentication.

This backwards thinking was also the reason for why Red Hat Kickstart and any configuration management was banned. I had to manually install and hand-configure everything.

Scribus 1.6.5 Open-Source Desktop Publishing App Released with Various Changes 9to5linux.com/scribus-1-6-5-op… #9to5linux #linux

The most recent @GrapheneOS update (stable channel) appears to be broken on my Pixel 9a.

The boot process shows the GrapheneOS logo. Then it starts over suddenly, rebooting the device again. It repeats that and only on the 4th reboot will it come back up. But a bit later it says an update has been installed and the device needs to be restarted again. It's done that three times now o.O

in reply to GrapheneOS

no, doesn't look like. Didn't even have the developer options enabled.

Very glad the automatic roll back is a thing. Pretty cool to have that safety and the update not just brick the phone 😀

in reply to Niklaus 'vimja' Hofer

Without the rollback feature, you would have had to boot recovery and wipe data to get rid of whatever configuration is causing it to be fail to boot. Alternatively, it would have been possible to wait for a release fixing it and sideload that via recovery. Automatic rollback is definitely much better. It also means you can enable USB debugging Before First Unlock USB-C before updating again, enable USB debugging, approve a computer and try to get logs during first boot of the update.
in reply to GrapheneOS

One user had an issue caused by the free form window mode developer option which has been resolved for our next release. We also improved our USB-C port control feature to load the configuration earlier in the boot process which is still just as secure but helps avoid interfering with debugging an issue like this. We made a release for that user with the USB change and then they were able to get logs for resolving the issue. The USB change in our next release may help you get logs.
in reply to GrapheneOS

It's no good, logging does not start early enough.

I've found the right settings and now adb logcat shows logs even before unlock. But only when booting the fallback release. During the failed update attempts, no logs are printed, adb just says "- waiting for device -".

in reply to Niklaus 'vimja' Hofer

Try the latest release which has several fixes for upstream bugs causing crashes. It also improves the USB port control feature to have the user setting activated earlier in the boot process so if you set it to be available BFU it will allow making a USB connection earlier such as for ADB.

OK, this has worked. Changed update channel to "Beta" updated again and rebooted. Now I get debug logs during the attempted update.

Is it safe to share these logs?

Nothing sensitive is meant to be logged but it can happen. It's best to share them to logs@grapheneos.org instead of publicly.

The response to Tuist jumping onto Android has been really positive!

Our plan: start with caching, then build insights.

We're getting ready to make AI agents actually useful by giving them the right build data from both Gradle and Xcode.
