Barack Obama ha lanciato un messaggio chiaro ai democratici durante un evento di raccolta fondi a Los Angeles domenica: la priorità assoluta è riconquistare la maggioranza alla Camera dei deputati nelle elezioni di midterm del 2026, mettendo da parte le divisioni ideologiche interne al partito. "La strategia a breve termine è vincere la Camera dei deputati", ha dichiarato l'ex presidente davanti al leader della minoranza alla Camera Hakeem Jeffries, ricevendo applausi. "Perché questo sarà l'interruttore che ci darà il controllo di una componente importante del governo federale".
L'evento, organizzato dal Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, il braccio di raccolta fondi dei democratici alla Camera, ha visto la partecipazione anche di Nancy Pelosi, ex speaker della Camera, e di una dozzina di deputati. Obama ha delineato una strategia su due fronti: nel breve periodo riconquistare la Camera, nel lungo periodo lavorare sul messaggio del partito per i prossimi anni.

Obama ha però minimizzato l'entità di queste fratture interne. "La verità è che Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders e i Blue Dog sono in realtà d'accordo nell'assicurare che le persone abbiano un salario dignitoso e possano mantenere una famiglia", ha affermato l'ex presidente. Ha aggiunto che la maggior parte degli americani non si concentra sui dibattiti interni del partito, descritti come "noiosi" e simili a "seminari universitari". "Certo ci saranno alcune differenze tattiche, ma questa non dovrebbe essere la nostra preoccupazione principale perché stiamo combattendo una battaglia più grande", ha detto Obama, sottolineando che le differenze "non sono così grandi" ma vengono "amplificate" dai social media.
La discussione con Jeffries, che Obama ha definito come il "futuro speaker", ha toccato anche gli sforzi per ridisegnare i collegi elettorali in tutto il paese e come affrontare la crisi dell'accessibilità economica. "Se portiamo energia, chiarezza e impegno nel parlare di cose come l'accessibilità economica, assicurando che le persone abbiano assistenza sanitaria quando ne hanno bisogno e che abbiano la possibilità, se lavorano duramente, di mantenere una famiglia e creare un futuro migliore per i loro figli e nipoti, questo messaggio risuona con le persone e dobbiamo avere fiducia in questo", ha dichiarato Obama.
Il focus sull'economia risponde a un'esigenza concreta. Un sondaggio di CBS News di fine novembre ha rilevato che il sentiment pubblico sull'economia ha raggiunto il livello più basso dell'anno, con solo il 32% degli intervistati che la descrive come "buona". Quasi due terzi hanno affermato che i prezzi stanno aumentando, mentre il 77% ha dichiarato che il presidente Trump non sta dedicando abbastanza tempo all'economia e all'inflazione.
Trump stesso ha mostrato incertezza sulle prospettive elettorali dei repubblicani. In un'intervista al Wall Street Journal di venerdì scorso, dopo essersi recato in Pennsylvania per promuovere la sua agenda economica e un disegno di legge sui tagli fiscali approvato all'inizio dell'anno, il presidente non ha voluto dire se le sue politiche aumenteranno le possibilità dei repubblicani al Congresso nelle elezioni autunnali. "Non posso dirlo. Non so quando tutto questo denaro inizierà a fare effetto", ha detto al giornale. "Vedremo cosa succede. Dovremmo vincere. Ma statisticamente è molto difficile vincere".
Obama ha descritto l'ascesa di Trump come un "campanello d'allarme", ma ha affermato di non essere "del tutto sorpreso" dalle recenti vittorie democratiche nelle elezioni fuori calendario. L'ex presidente ha fatto campagna elettorale in autunno per i candidati a governatore Mikie Sherrill del New Jersey e Abigail Spanberger della Virginia, entrambi vincitori a novembre con margini a due cifre. Obama ha sottolineato il nuovo ottimismo dei democratici dopo queste vittorie, osservando che ha trascorso gran parte del suo tempo dopo il ritorno di Trump in carica "a tirare giù le persone dai cornicioni".

L'ex presidente ha promesso ai deputati che una volta raggiunto l'obiettivo della Camera, il partito avrà "un enorme talento" e sarà "in una posizione" per "esaminare alcune delle differenze" man mano che la prossima campagna presidenziale prenderà forma.
Jeffries ha fatto eco al messaggio di Obama. "La cosa più importante che dobbiamo fare è riconquistare il controllo della Camera dei deputati, come ha indicato il presidente Obama, come parte del percorso per porre fine a questo incubo nazionale negli Stati Uniti d'America", ha dichiarato il leader della minoranza democratica alla Camera. Obama ha concluso affermando: "Penso che tutti possiamo sentire una nuova energia".
