Why are (new) UK houses so expensive but so badly built?
Well the simple answer is that around 70% of the value of the average house is in the land.
So no wonder they seem cheaply & badly made for the price; they are.
What this does suggest is that finding a way to massage down land prices over time would be the best way to slowly unwind the house price crisis along with a programme of both new houses where they are needed & bringing empty homes back into use.
Taxing housebuilders properly on their banked land would be a start.
They are however also very badly built because there is a massive shortage of labour (skilled or even slightly competent). That means the building companies will take pretty much anyone however dodgy their work is.
There's also another answer to some of it - we in the UK are really good at building portakabin villages for construction work. One or two councils are playing with this for emergency housing now
