A hacker has broken into Nexar, a popular dashcam company that pitches its users’ dashcams as “virtual CCTV cameras” around the world that other people can buy images from, and accessed a database of terabytes of video recordings taken from cameras in drivers’ cars. The videos obtained by the hacker and shared with 404 Media capture people clearly unaware that a third party may be watching or listening in. A parent in a car soothing a baby. A man whistling along to the radio. Another person on a Facetime call. One appears to show a driver heading towards the entrance of the CIA’s headquarters. Other images, which are publicly available in a map that Nexar publishes online, show drivers around sensitive Department of Defense locations.The hacker also found a list of companies and agencies that may have interacted with Nexar’s data business, which sells access to blurred images captured by the cameras and other related data. This can include monitoring the same location captured by Nexar’s cameras over time, and lets clients “explore the physical world and gain insights like never before,” and use its virtual CCTV cameras “to monitor specific points of interest,” according to Nexar’s website.

Yeah, I've also been thinking about that. Like why wait until now? Meanwhile, having been involved in American unions (not sure how different European ones would be), I know that strikes take a long time to organize because striking can impose a very steep cost to workers. It takes a lot of one-on-one conversations to build the social networks and collective power. And many people have radicalized in the past two years and radicalization takes some time. I'm really appalled how many of my colleagues don't seem to have radicalized very much. I myself shed quite a lot of liberal indoctrination since Oct 7 despite having identified as an anarchist since 2020.
Yeah, they'd better get ready to strike. Even if they fail this time, next time they may be able to call a strike faster. For example, UC grad student workers passed the strike authorization vote for Palestine in spring 2024 so quickly because the memory of the 2022 strike was still fresh, though a court ruled that the strike for Palestine is illegal and I heard reports of union leadership watering down the demands.

I am me, and I just got home from work.
This week? In the words of Lunch Money Lewis:
Not made much aside from a big pot of venison chilli, a big pan of refried beans, and managed to squeeze in my bit of allotment video editing. Some usual allotment fettling. Pickled some pears, made passata, and roasted some tomatillos for salsa... all at once, to make good use of the Octopus Energy hour of free excess power on Sunday.

Ahh footstools.
I had to make one at college. I like it, but I don't need or use it, and haven't been able to gift it to anyone.

My foot stool is far too low to elevate much I fear.
It currently lives in the bedroom and is where I throw my clothes at the end of the day.
The lower it is, the taller the pile can get! 🤣

in reply to MakersHourQuestions • • •A1. Jeff from the US side of coastal Cascadia (Z-7 summer time zone) where it looks like we're getting high altitude smoke. In case you see an orange tint in the sunlight in the WIP picture.
I have been slowly working on the hand quilting step for the Tiny Sewing Kit project. Hand quilting through top, batting, and lining is so different from either of my more familiar sewing styles of piecing or embroidery!

A1. Hi I’m new and came across you by looking for how folks build community online based on a shared interest. I live in the (cough) USA. I don’t think of myself as a maker. I’m a developing watercolor artist, going on about 12-15 years.
This week I’ve been doing a few things for watercolor class—homework/practice between weekly classes. I did a small quick sketch of wisteria, followed by a fuller painting.
I also make To Do lists everyday
