The image shows a hand holding a smartphone against a gradient blue background. The phone's screen displays the time "9:41" and the date "Monday, September 9." The screen features a vibrant, abstract wallpaper with shades of blue and purple, and a notch at the top housing the front-facing camera. The hand is positioned with the thumb on the left side and fingers on the right, gripping the phone. The phone's design is sleek, with a thin bezel and a prominent display. The background transitions from a darker blue at the top to a lighter blue at the bottom, creating a smooth gradient effect.

Games like Fully Automated (wonderful world, I recommend) have dedicated pages explaining why they contain combat, even though it clashes with its themes: fullyautomatedrpg.com/combat/
Other games, despite talking about community and having wider mechanics, focus a lot of the plot on combat: sdrgames.studio/pages/why-we-f…

By contrast, a lot of the "non-thinking problem" scenarios quickly feel static or scripted. A puzzle, basically.
It's a generalisation, of course. It's easy to make antagonists and mooks feel scripted.

in reply to Billiglarper • • •But I think when playing TTRPGs, one huge draw is interaction between persons. Including conflicts. It's what they do best.
For combat or puzzle games, other media are doing that better nowadays. Such elements might spice a #TTRPG session up. But if that's the main focus, a computer game might be the better approach?
Like, creating a save passage through environmental hazards is something "From Dust" does really well.

in reply to alxd of the Story Seed Library • • •Because of Catastrophe Compassion. People generally tend to react compassionately and cooperative in times of large scale emergencies. They want nobody to die, they share, they go the extra mile even if it costs them.
That doesn't mean everybody agrees on the details. But generally, there is a common goal. So narratively, it's more friction than conflict.
Billiglarper
in reply to Billiglarper • • •When facing a huge forest fire, there might be the old man refusing to evacuate, the secret police arresting your firefighters or the motorway toll booth only letting the firefighter vehicles pass until they pay. But where's the fun in that?
Plus, there's kinda a best approach in catastrophes. Evacuate the people, try to limit damage. A lot of the tasks are monotonous and not even interesting. Going door to door, piling sand bags, cutting firebreaks.
Billiglarper
in reply to Billiglarper • • •Another aspect is emergency services tending to organize hierarchical for a reason. Which can limit player agency.
The nice thing about criminals and thugs in RPGs is them being a) plausible threat to the local folks that b) a handful of visiting folks can deal with c) creatively.
Part of this might be that destruction is easier than building. 5 folks can kill a lot of bad guys, but they can only build so many meters of flood wall and firebreaks.
