If we'd accepted our reduced standing back in 1945, things would've been a lot better. So many things would be better. No Suez nonsense, no crashing out of the ERM, no brexit, quite possibly no involvement in the invasion of Iraq either.
People alive at the time could've all simply accepted that we'd had a good run and it was time to slip back into the quiet diplomatic middle classes.
Completely agree & used to say so to my students when I was teaching International Relations introductory courses
