Meanwhile in Norway, it looks like the close but not-a-member relationship with the EU is looking increasingly less attractive to key politicians, who are now suggesting that Norway remains too disadvantaged being a non-member... their problem is the opinion polls show too few Norwegians share that view, leaving any referendum on joining unlikely.
The Q. in Norway, is: what would change Norwegians' view of EU membership?
Since they already enjoy many of the benefits of the single market due to their unique relationship with the EU and EFTA, I can understand why full membership may not look so attractive from their perspective.
I was in Norway last week and I asked the same question - why not join the EU? Mostly spoke to just a few oldies but they say they no longer feel so wealthy and already have too many "rules" without Brussels joining in. I suspect the young would join - they see the end of the oil wealth in their lifetime but as long as they have freedom of movement to go study somewhere warmer - the status quo is fine.
The Brits are having a good look at the Norwegian Wealth Tax model. Rud Pedersen analysis is interesting.

That seems like a *very* sensible model: instead of paying a big hit when you die, just pay it more slowly while you're alive. Probably a fairer outcome overall.
Combining a wealth tax with the abolition of inheritance tax could be popular, no?
I think the invasion of Ukraine and Trump election (trade etc) have put EU membership in a more positive light in Norway. However, a new referendum is a risky move for the parties. Apart from the agrarian center party, most parties will have voters landing on both sides in a referendum and the two earlier ones shaked up the elections (the last one even a central precursor for the Centrum coalition government).
As Norwegians are pretty nationalistic, small changes towards EU support are not enough to counter the probable nationalistic fevor that would come in the build up to a referendum and the costs of having a referendum and loosing again are not worthwhile for the pro EU parties as the agreement we already have secures us many of the benefits of membership.
I never quite grasp the nationalistic argument when coming from a small European country (which applies to all of them when compared to the gigantic Asian countries or the US).
The world has changed. E.g., what do the Norwegians think of the current predicament of Denmark. Or how are they going to achieve digital sovereignty?
The benefit of being within the EU is preserving and shaping a European identity as a precondition for a national identity.
@openrisk I think Norway's past, where we've been extremely lucky (freedom from Denmark because of Napoleon's defeat, from Sweden without a shot being fired, not part of WW1, best treatment of the countries occupied by Germany in WW2, Soviet Union withdrawing (!) from northern Norway etc.) makes us underestimate our precarious situation as a small country outside the EU. The oil, and the richess it caused, has of course not made us feel more dependent on EU membership either.
I know that one issue why Switzerland can't join is the cost of compliance. When I worked there I was shocked by the H&S gaps and by the long hours I was expected to work (without overtime payments). Less wealthy countries get financial, and other help to bring them up to the expected level to comply with EU laws. So, while it would help with border security and improve some parts of the citizens lives, would the cost of fully implementing laws not already in place* be too much?
*They are already aligned in some areas, but I'm not sure about labour laws, etc.
I've seen lots of posts recently about people feeling proud of being productive, ticking off a small thing from their list, or just generally feeling relief from doing a thing.

@purplepadma same! I like hearing that other people are doing things though. It's almost like there are only so many "productivity brain cells" at one time and at the moment these other people have them. They might infect our brains on another day but today is not that day!

It's tricky: you need to register to a library (not many allow you to do it online: I joined Roma and Bologna ones so far), each library has their own ebooks, usually 2 books/month limit, return after 14 days etc.... but it works and it's free 🙂

Min erfarenhet är att de mest kompetenta i frågan är Himmel och jord. S skulle jag starkt avråda att rösta på. De har inga lokalt förankrande valprogram utan allt styrs centralt. I vårt pastorat går de till val på ex. att all verksamhet för barn och unga ska vara kostnadsfri, vilket alla grupper är överens om och införde för många år sedan. De känns lika populistiska som SD.
@karlemo jag gillar visk men de är inte alltid representerade i varje församling/pastorat. Så när jag bodde i Haninge röstade jag på S. Inte för att de var så himla bra utan för att det inte riktigt fanns något annat att rösta på som inte var höger
Jag har alltid röstat POSK men i detta val blir det nog Himmel och Jord på stiftsnivå eftersom vårt stift har så mycket skog. Tyvärr har POSK lierat sig med S gällande att införa storpastorat så det blir nog inget mer POSK för mig. Jag tror det bara är Centern och kanske Frimodig kyrka som arbetar aktivt mot detta.
Lokalt tror jag POSK är ett fungerande koncept eftersom det kan samla folk av olika slag och man kan ta reda på vad de tycker och vill verka för. Det är svårare när det blir på stift och nationell nivå. Då behöver man nästan läsa vilka motioner de skrivit och hur de röstat. Iofs är det på liknande sätt med många politiska grupper också som vänder kappan efter vinden så snabbt att de mer liknar propellrar.SD är enklare: återinför Fader Vår och förbjud muslimer i SvK. 😀

Good morning! I had a good sleep and woke up before my alarm with time to meditate before breakfast. I informed the cat that it was her birthday but she seemed indifferent. We stepped out onto the patio together in dawn light, the air was fresh and the sky was completely clear apart from one bright peach con trail.
Off to campus today on the 8am train which is allegedly on time. As I have meetings over lunch I will go to the M&S cafe for brunch (a toastie and a cold drink), which is a little treat to myself.
