Als het gaat over Studentenwelzijn laat onderzoek nog steeds zien dat voldoende aandacht voor de ondersteuning en verbetering ervan urgent blijft. En niet alleen om de studie goed en succesvol door te komen. Wij kijken daarbij nog wat verder de Toekomst(maker) in.
In september stelde het cvb de HR-brede visie op Studentenwelzijn vast. Er is daarna hard gewerkt aan de uitrol ervan in de vorm van een plan van aanpak en de mobilisatie van alle stakeholders die in dit proces een rol gaan spelen.
Ook landelijk wordt wat mij betreft nog te weinig duidelijk gemaakt en onderstreept dat de aandacht voor en investering in Studentenwelzijn niet enkel voor de studietijd, maar juist ook voor de professionele toekomst van studenten van cruciaal belang is. Kijk maar naar het zojuist gepubliceerde landelijk onderzoek van de RIVM.
Ik zou zelfs zo ver willen gaan te vragen: Is er niet eerder iets “mis” met dat deel van de populatie dat het niet mentaal zwaar heeft? Want ondanks de onderzoekers het niet per se aan de een of de andere factor kunnen ophangen: er zijn er meer dan genoeg om uit te kiezen. Of het nu het moordende tempo is waarin we leven, de ziekmakende invloed van sociale media, het besef dat we de wereld naar de knoppen helpen beyond our control of dat we straks nog wel in vrede leven: ik begrijp dat jonge mensen langzamerhand steeds vaker als een konijn dat in de koplampen kijkt compleet bevriezen en zich afvragen ‘Wat en hoe kan ik hier iets mee?!’
Om mentaal gezond te blijven in een gestoorde wereld – want dat mag inmiddels wel worden gezegd – moeten we onze studenten kennis en vaardigheden meegeven die hen daar duurzaam bij helpen. Niet alleen om tot studie- en studentsucces te komen, ook om niet al binnen een paar jaar ten prooi te vallen aan overspanning, burn-out, depressie of andere mentale malaise. Een professional anno 2026+ beschikt ook over goed ontwikkelde veerkracht en snapt wat zowel zelfregulatie als zelfzorg vragen.
Het is daarom dat ik op dit moment van het jaar trots en blij terugkijk op het feit dat Hogeschool Rotterdam dit onderschrijft in de visie Studentenwelzijn die zij in september vaststelde. Inmiddels wordt hard gewerkt aan de steigers om haar met frisse moed, zin en inspiratie in 2026 in gezamenlijkheid uit te gaan rollen. Niet als extra of luxe maar uit pure noodzaak.
