If you want a rigorous analysis of why statistical #AI models collapse when continuously trained on their own data without external supervision and constraints, read this amazing paper from last year.
If you want to get a visual intuition of how model collapse looks like, look at this video.
When AI stares at its own reflection for too long, and its inference is purely rooted on statistics rather than reasoning, this becomes statistically inevitable.
Keep this in mind whenever you hear someone talking about “AI models learning from their own outputs” without addressing the statistical parrot issue.

in reply to Erik Jonker • • •@ErikJonker well, the conceptual mechanism is pretty much the same.
This is the output of a model tasked with a “generate the next image” prompt - basically a closed-loop system where the only input at t is the the output at t-1.
The process itself is stateless in this case - we’re predicting outputs without changing weights.
But imagine a lot of this output being generated over many generations, being incorporated in many synthetic datasets, and having those datasets fed to new models.
The drift / smoothing / averaging out phenomenon would still happen. On different timescales than 200 tight loop iterations, sure. But it’s still there. Because it’s intrinsic to a model that is statistically designed to converge to something and model a low-variance prediction out of a high-variance input.

Excuse me for chiming in, but I could not resist pointing out that von Neumann himself explicitly warns in his book (on the mathematical foundations of QT) against using "his" entropy for thermodynamics, and instead introduces a macroscopic entropy to account for entropy increase in isolated systems.
Fabio Manganiello
Unknown parent • • •@androcat @Ntropic 0 days since having a discussion on the meaning of #entropy 🙂
And a discussion that compares the Boltzmann and Von Neumann/Shannon interpretations would drag me here for hours (and after days of both scientific and philosophical thought exercize over their implications I still can’t come up with a definition that satisfies both the “thermodynamic” and the “information” interpretation).
Let me clarify what I mean by “low/high entropy of a closed system” in this context with a better (but also abused) analogy when we talk about entropy: the coffee and milk case.
It’s an old adage taught to kids from an early age that when you mix coffee and milk you start with a “low entropy” system (coffee and milk as separate states with their own boundaries) and end up with a “high entropy” system (coffee and milk mixed together).
The underlying concept in this definition of entropy is that of “reversibility” of a reaction. Not necessarily the amount of information or independent variables required to accurately model the system. I like this definition better because the principle of least action and the arrow of time just emerge as naturally corollaries of it.
It’s basically much easier to start with a system where the two components are separate and end up with a system where they are mixed than the other way around. This is a definition that even a kid can understand without delving into the logarithmic growth of information states. As @androcat intuitively but eloquently put it:
This is exactly what I mean by “high entropy” state in this context.
You can’t get the original coffee grains out of your latte unless you apply some serious molecular wizardy (which btw would just transfer entropy from your cup to whatever machinery you’re using to do your molecular distillation, which is where the concept of “what are the boundaries of your system, where you need to put your entropic probes” becomes important).
Similarly, you can’t get the original girlfriend meme picture starting from the final “three asexual and featureless abuelas on a black background” picture unless you consume all the energy resources of the planet to do a backwards search through all the possible permutations of stable diffusion that may have led to that outcome (and maybe adding a huge additional adversarial network on top to tell how “realistic” each prediction is).
According to a strictly “informational” definition, however, the entropy of the final system in both cases (latte and three asexual abuelas) may actually be low. After all, we don’t need much information to model a low-variance system that converged onto a local minimum: it’s just the average value.
But the arrow of time of events that led to that state matters here: was the system in that state because the latte or the three abuelas were already in that averaged out state since the moment of the big bang, or is it the output of a system that we can reasonably approximate as a closed one (your coffee cup or a specific snapshot of weights saved on an OpenAI server) which recursively ate back its own shit through a tight feedback loop and simply ended up with a very low-variance normal distribution?
This is the conflict point I see between the two dominant interpretations. And I see it mainly as a problem on the “information” interpretation, because by focusing on “how many independent variables do I need to accurately describe the state of the system?” it settles for a stateless definition that misses out the dimension of time (and reversibility).

Androcat

@Ntropic In thermodynamics entropy can grow in closed systems.
This is the fact you have drawn into question.
In thermodynamics a system is closed if matter cannot escape it.
In thermondynamics, not all energy can be turned into work == entropy will rise.
Whether matter can escape won't matter (pun not intended).
Ntropic
in reply to Androcat • • •@androcat I am well aware of what you are talking about, I am saying its a wrong analogy for LLM's! And that the correct one would be with Von Neumann entropy. I am saying thermodynamics is not the right picture here for the loss of information of a system.
In either case the analogy is even worse, because LLM decay actually decreases the entropy of the outputs. As shown by the paper at the top of the conversation, in which the pictures start looking more and more alike.
Androcat
Unknown parent • • •Sensitive content
@Ntropic Von Neumann entropy is not relevant to thermodynamics.
A practical concept of entropy based on the behavior of atoms in the amount of NA is not properly equivalent to a theoretical entity based on n=1 behavior.
Ultimately, quantum mechanics is very nebulous and hard to understand compared to chemistry. Transposing a quantum term to the NA level makes misconception unavoidable.
Ntropic
in reply to Androcat • • •@androcat chemistry is quantum mechanics. but go on, make an analogy of model decay with chemistry and we can debate its accuracy.
I am debating only, that physical systems that loose information are open systems, not closed systems.
the thermodynamics example would either not increase entropy or not be closed, that's a result from quantum mechanics, independently of what your example of a closed garage door intuits.
Androcat
Unknown parent • • •Sensitive content
@Ntropic
The system can't lack any information, though.
The system is what is there.
And "losing information" doesn't require an open system. You can burn a book inside a closed system, it's fine.
The pertinent part is losing track of information. Every bit of real-world behavior that your model (physics, chemistry, whatever) doesn't track adds to the entropy.
When a recursive system eats its own shit, it's not leaking information to some other system, it's just overwriting it through averaging.
Ntropic

Suppose your garage is a closed system when the door is closed, and open when not closed.
In your garage a car is running.
Its motor is hooked up to a belt that pulls a cement mixer.
Not all energy can be converted to work regardless of whether the door is open or not.
Even if all heat is trapped in the garage, this will not help the motor convert all its fuel into cement-mixing work.
Heat escapes, the center cannot hold.
