The Murder of John Lang: A Cautionary Tale on the Importance of Online Privacy

I want to share a deeply concerning story that highlights the critical importance of online privacy, especially for activists and those who speak out against authority. The death of John Lang, a well-known figure in the Fresno activist community, raises serious questions about surveillance, privacy, and the potential consequences of being targeted by law enforcement.

John was found stabbed inside a burning home, and what’s particularly alarming is that just days before his death, he expressed fears that Fresno law enforcement was stalking him and might end his life. He had been vocal about his experiences with police harassment, including a disturbing pattern of unethical practices by Fresno law enforcement, such as scanning license plates in retail parking lots to generate revenue.

In his efforts to protest these injustices, John posted his thoughts on the Fresno Bee, believing he was doing so anonymously. However, it later came to light that an employee at the Fresno Bee was sharing identifiable information (IP addresses) with law enforcement, leading to John being targeted. This tragic situation serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities we face when we do not take proper precautions to protect our online privacy.

John’s case illustrates the dangers of not using tools like VPNs or Tor for online activism. Had he utilized these privacy measures, he might have been able to shield his identity from those who sought to silence him.

This tragic story serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of online exposure for activists. We must learn from John’s experience and recognize the importance of safeguarding our privacy in an increasingly surveilled world.

Is it American police or American mafia?
So better not to trust any feds at all.

Awful. Rest in peace.

Thank you for this story, but anyway, "we have nothing to hide"

P.S. US once were a "police of the world" so I think it's harder to hide your identity (in case of privacy and legal things) there, or I'm wrong?

From my understanding, dental records are not actually as full-proof as they come of as in the media and there was a great deal of pseudoscience in their popularisation as a tool for identifying people. So perhaps, if the fingerprints are still identifiable, forensics went with them since they are more reliable.

Took my son to McDonald’s today after not going for years and was shocked at the price of a cheeseburger. So I looked it up and a cheeseburger went from $1 to $3 over the course of Biden’s presidency.

I can see why people voted for Trump since Democrats didn’t even acknowledge this problem.

Unfortunately for those voters, not only does he have no plan to lower prices, many of his policies are just going to make the problem worse.

Glad that TeenVogue is addressing this for their young readers.
"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explains how the ultra-rich are beneficiaries of an unjust economic system where billionaires don’t make money, they take money. It’s impossible to have that much money without profiting off of other people's lack of it." teenvogue.com/story/billionair…

I have talked about accessibility a lot here. But now, it's my turn to ask some questions! I fully admit to being guilty of not capitalising the first letter of each word when writing tags, unless said words are usually capitalised. As a screen reader user, I do realise this can lead to confusion. But are searches on Friendica and elsewhere in the Fediverse case sensitive? If I write goodwriting will it show up in the same listings as GoodWriting? If not, which should I follow, and what about single words, such as writing, which screen readers say correctly? Should I capitalise those (or not) for consistancy?

#accessibility #blind #Fediverse #Friendica #hashtags #screenreaders

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I know that mastodon hashtags aren't case sensitive, so the capitalization variants all point to the same content. I would expect friendica to be the same, but I'm not sure.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

hashtags should by convention be camel case, so the first word is not capitalised, while all the others are, so if your hashtag is just one word, it falls in the first word rule, which means it doesn't have to be capitalised. Because of this however, hashtag searches on the fediverse are case sensitive

Why is it that people I know who decide to jump into #Linux for the first time go for Garuda? I mean, there's nothing wrong with it per-se, but it's also not an incredibly user friendly distro for first timers. Vim should not be a default, it should be an opt into, for example. Flatpacks should not be pushed over native packages, and yet they are (and then they cause issues as a result!)

Just... ugh.

The Angry Brigade was an anarchist-communist anti-imperialist guerrilla group in the late ’60s, growing from the student anti-war movement and the militant, far left revolutionary groups of Spain to launch a series of bombing campaigns between 1970 and 1972.
in reply to anarchofggt

In every generation, there are young people who take up the task of revolution directly, intensely, and most seriously.

The Brigade was quite clear in their aims; they sought to attack property, not people, and their targets included banks, fascist embassies, and the homes of Conservative MP’s, including then Home Secretary Robert Carr, courts and, as depicted in the film Misbehaviour, a BBC Outside Broadcast van at the 1970 Miss World event.

in reply to anarchofggt

These small bombing campaigns secured media exposure to the demands of their cause and the police estimate that some 25 bombings could be attributed to the group. Collateral damage was kept to a minimum during their ‘campaign of terror’ with only one person suffering slight injuries.
in reply to anarchofggt

The trial of the Stoke Newington cell, ‘the Stoke Newington Eight’, became one of the longest criminal trials in English history, lasting from 30th May to 6th December 1972. Of the eight, John Barker, Jim Greenfield, Hilary Creek and Anna Mendelssohn (who wrote as a poet under the pen name of Grace Lake) were found guilty and sentenced to ten years imprisonment, whilst a further four were acquitted,
in reply to anarchofggt

including Stuart Christie, who had previously been in Spanish gaol for his part in an assassination plot on Franco, and Angela Mason, who went on to become the director of Stonewall, receiving the OBE for her services to LGBT rights in 1999. Jake Prescott, who was the first of the group to be captured and imprisoned in 1971 famously reflected that whilst he was angry, the rest were ‘the slightly cross brigade’.

Good thread! Although most of the group would have considered themselves "libertarian communist" rather than anarchist as such. As while they were definitely anarchist-friendly and around the anarchist milieu, their politics came more from Marxism originally, especially the Situationists.

Got tired of drilling CW in MorseMachine, Morsle, and Morse code for Android, and listened in a few times today to see whether I can copy off the air yet.

During the afternoon on 20m, Winter Field Day was in full swing and every CQ I could hear was too fast for me to copy anything after "CQ". (Well, I did copy what sounded like "FDW9" at one point which I assume was related to field day activities) After dark, 80m had some folks with a more leisurely pace. However, signals fading in and out meant that I still had trouble copying call signs. I could at least recognize more characters even if I couldn't copy enough to understand...

I don't have a key yet, so I don't have to feel bad about not transmitting. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it, for a while! 😀
