It's hard to draw conclusions from that graph. The top line isn't labelled, but it looks like whoever that was had a similar growth curve and then found it hard to electrify beyond 30%. There are a few factors to consider:

• For a lot of things, electricity is the natural and obvious choice. Simply building those out at all would default to adding more electricity consumption. A lot of other countries had already done a lot of this low-hanging fruit before the 1970s.
• For a lot of other things, converting to electrical power is a lot more expensive than building with electrical power from the start. We saw this with Internet deployments 20-30 years ago: countries that didn't have a good telephone network were deploying fibre everywhere because it was cheaper than copper and there was no reason to deploy copper. Countries that had an extensive copper network had a big cost to replace it all with fibre.

I think 30% is around where you get to with the first one, and the second lets you get there faster if you start later. It will be very interesting to see how this looks once they are past the 50% point. I hope it will continue. China has been electrifying things like aluminium smelting plants, which is a massive investment (with long-term pay offs), so I wouldn't be surprised if they keep this growth rate at least to 50%.

The other interesting factor is the degree to which this is fed by renewable sources. Switching to coal-fired power plants is not a very big win relative to burning oil on site. Last time I checked, China's renewable rollout was impressive, but I'd love to see the graph combining renewable generation with percent electrification. I suspect the US and some European countries would look a lot worse.
