Natural cooling methods in #Morocco

October 27, 2024

"Morocco’s hot and dry climate makes it hard to keep homes cool. But, the country’s #TraditionalArchitecture has found clever ways to beat the heat. Using the environment, Moroccan builders have created natural cooling methods.

"They use things like porous [clay] jars and #mashrabiyas. These techniques keep homes cool without needing #AirConditioning.

Key Takeaways

- Moroccan architecture uses passive cooling like thermal mass design, shading, and ventilation.
- Evaporative cooling systems like porous jars and mashrabiyas cool homes by evaporation.
- Features like wind catchers, courtyards, and underground irrigation help cool naturally.
- Modern projects are using these old methods in new buildings for #sustainable cooling.
- Moroccan cooling methods show a deep understanding of the local climate and a focus on comfort and well-being.

Traditional Moroccan Architecture:

"Moroccan architecture shows the clever use of #nature to make homes comfortable. At its core are the riads, traditional Moroccan houses. These houses have thick walls of clay or stone that keep the inside cool, even when it’s very hot outside.

#Riads and #Courtyards

The central courtyard, often with a #garden or fountain, acts as a natural air conditioner. In Fez, where it can get up to 104°F (40°C) in July, this design makes air conditioning unnecessary. The thick walls and central courtyard work together to keep the inside cool.

Khettaras and Fountains

"Traditional Moroccan architecture also uses advanced irrigation systems called khettaras. These systems bring water from the mountains to the cities. This water is used for cooling fountains and pools, lowering the temperature through evaporation.

"The sound of water and greenery in these courtyards make a peaceful and cool atmosphere. This adds to the natural cooling effect.

"The architecture in Morocco showcases a sustainable and cost-effective model for contemporary buildings, emphasizing the effectiveness of design and natural materials over reliance on air conditioning.'

"The traditional Moroccan building methods teach us about sustainable design. They use local, natural materials and work with the environment. This is a valuable lesson for modern architecture around the world."

you can still use OpenRC instead if you want, and sxmo will continue to do so by default.

you can read here about why they added systemd.

As much as we might want to romanticise the idea of spending 6, 12, 24 months attempting to come up with an even vaguely competitive alternative to systemd,

There are alternatives like runit, dinit, s6. About some of the more useful features of systemd, how about we recreate them without thight coupling to one specific init+service manager-in-one?

These exist already, they are the polyfills mentioned in the post. They even color coded how well each of them are maintained. So you can totally pick one up and contribute

I have a ton of postcards from Japan. As part of my postcard cataloging I've been OCRing the text on the back of the cards (which my postcardbot uses for alt text), but the Japanese cards pose special problems, not the least of which is my unfamiliarity with the language or symbols. Also sometimes the text is vertical and my OCR doesn't deal well with that (I'm using a Javascript version of Tesseract, which I've customized for my particular cataloging process).

So I'm wondering if I can crowdsource validation of the OCRed text on some of these. Consider this an experiment.

This is item 5714. Luckily it's blank, so I can post it without redaction. I've pasted the OCR result below. If you know Japanese and can clean it up, reply with the cleaned up result and I'll use that instead.

Note that the first line is from the center. Also my OCR seems to collapse all space, and inserts a space between each character (should those be removed?) And finally, when I clean up OCRed text in Roman languages I typically delete any line breaks, but since I can't read the language, I don't know if the line breaks here should be removed or not.

They'll tell you to celebrate freedom — while they strip it away.

They'll hand you a flag and hope you forget:

* Who's being silenced.
* Who's being punished for existing.
* Who's still fighting to be free.

But we remember.

We remember that real patriotism means standing up — not standing by.

This July 4th, we won't be quiet. We won't be polite. We'll be loud, visible, and unignorable.

Because freedom isn't a gift — it's a fight. And we're in it.

✊🏾 Join us. March with us. Make noise.

I'll get a real replacement in "7-10 days" but this took me 25 minutes to design, print, and install, and now the tires are pumped up and I don't have to keep putting electrical tape around the presta stems to fill the tubes up.

The image features four men standing side by side in front of a textured wall adorned with an abstract, white, scribble-like artwork. The man on the far left is wearing a dark blue shirt and has a warm smile. Next to him, the second man is dressed in a black sweater and glasses, with a neutral expression. The third man is wearing a red polo shirt with a small emblem on the left side and has a pair of glasses hanging from his shirt collar, smiling slightly. We will use Grok 3.5 (maybe we should call it 4), which has advanced reasoning, to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors.

Then retrain on that.

So I've still got my old non-flagship smartphone that I complained about before. I'm so annoyed that now and then the touchscreen would in_some_parts not work and the only fix is to restart* the phone. It's happening more often now. 😣

I do have the budget for a new gadget but... ugh! How better will my next #smartphone be? 🤷‍♀️ I'm delaying the spending. Money saved is like money earned. I think dumb/feature #phones are great. But there are lots of #apps that I want handy... in my pocket. 😐 #tech
