Il giocatore che rompe il mondo (e non se ne accorge)
Nel gioco di ruolo, i background dei personaggi sono uno strumento potente. Offrono spunti, legano i PG al mondo, creano traiettorie drammatiche. Ma come ogni strumento potente, se usato male può fare danni. A volte anche irreparabili.
Non è raro che un giocatore, in buona fede, scriva un retroterra personale che introduce razze inesistenti, portali dimensionali, imperi mai menzionati, capacità fuori scala o conoscenze che scavalcano l’intera ambientazione. Lo fa per arricchire la storia del suo personaggio, per renderlo “interessante”, “diverso”, “profondo”. Ma il risultato, molto spesso, è che rompe il mondo di gioco.
E nella maggior parte dei casi, non se ne accorge nemmeno.
Il background non è un override
C’è un’idea sottesa, mai detta apertamente, secondo cui il background sia uno spazio libero. Come se, in quella porzione di pregioco, il giocatore avesse pieni poteri. Ma questo è un equivoco pericoloso.
Il background è un contributo, non un override. Non può ridefinire l’ambientazione, né introdurre elementi che il tavolo non ha discusso. Un giocatore non può semplicemente dichiarare che esistono portali interdimensionali, o che è il figlio segreto dell’imperatore, o che ha viaggiato nel tempo. Non se il gioco non lo prevede. Non se nessuno l’ha messo sul tavolo prima.
Il caso del portale interdimensionale
Un esempio emblematico è emerso nella conversazione che ha ispirato questo articolo: durante una campagna fantasy, un giocatore rivela improvvisamente di provenire da un altro mondo, di conoscere l’esistenza di un portale segreto, e di volerci tornare per chiedere aiuto a un vecchio alleato.
Il problema non è solo la portata dell’elemento introdotto (un portale segreto tra dimensioni), ma il modo in cui è stato introdotto: senza preavviso, senza confronto, e con un impatto potenzialmente dirompente sulla coerenza dell’ambientazione.
Il Master, colto alla sprovvista, prova a riassorbire l’elemento nella trama con qualche contromossa (il portale è sorvegliato da nemici, è parte del piano del villain, ecc.). Ma il danno è fatto. Non solo narrativo, ma strutturale: è stato rotto il contratto implicito sui ruoli.
La sessione zero non è opzionale
Questa dinamica si verifica soprattutto quando manca (o è fatta male) la sessione zero. Quel momento iniziale in cui si definiscono le aspettative, le regole implicite, i toni e – soprattutto – i limiti del mondo.
Una sessione zero efficace dovrebbe rendere impossibile che un background simile passi inosservato. Dovrebbe chiarire:
- Qual è l’orizzonte di possibilità dell’ambientazione
- Che tipo di agenzia narrativa è concessa ai giocatori
- Chi decide cosa esiste nel mondo
Se queste cose non sono dette in anticipo, il fraintendimento è garantito. E spesso si scarica tutto sulle spalle del GM, che si trova costretto a fare da filtro posticcio, mediatore e rattoppo ambulante.
Ma non è questione di controllo
Attenzione, il punto non è “vietare” i background creativi. Il punto è stabilire se stanno dentro le regole del gioco e del mondo condiviso. Un Master può accettare qualsiasi cosa, anche un personaggio che viene da un altro piano di esistenza, ma deve saperlo prima, e decidere se e come integrarlo.
Altrimenti, il giocatore sta esercitando un’autorità narrativa che non gli spetta. E anche se lo fa in buona fede, sta scavalcando il tavolo.
Non è una questione di controllo. È una questione di rispetto.
Conclusione
Il background non è un luogo neutro. Non è una fanfiction autonoma. È un contributo che va accordato con il resto della tavolata. Altrimenti diventa tossico: mina la coerenza, rompe i ruoli, e avvelena la fiducia.
Un buon giocatore scrive un background che risuona con il mondo, non che lo riscrive.
Un buon Master lo legge, lo integra, o lo rifiuta.
Un buon gruppo ne parla prima, non quando è troppo tardi.

How I manage my photo workflow, a tiny 🧵 :
First of all, I shoot in JPEG. If it's not good enough for a JPEG, it's not good enough for a RAW. Not amount of data will ever recover a totally burned area.
So after I transfer my files to my computer, I open Rawtherapee, an open-source equivalent to Lightroom.
My first step is to select all the unblurry/correctly exposed pictures using a 1-star rank. You can also color-label your pics, but I find the star system more handy.
After a first pass, I filter on the starred pics and I unstar the worse ones until I have a number of pictures I'm comfortable with. Usually around 15 pictures per model. Removing pictures hurts, but it's less work down the road, and nobody wants a dozen identical shots.
Next, let's process one picture by double-clicking it

The basics including scrolling home/all/local, viewing posts, blocking, commenting and voting should work well. However there are some known issues:
- Can't sign up for a Piefed account in-app, only log in with an existing one
- Subscribed communities list is empty (should be fixed soon!)
- Inbox tab doesn't load
- Comment search doesn't work
- Profile upvoted/downvoted doesn't load
- No moderation tools
- Mark as read doesn't persist
- Creating/editing posts is currently untested
- ...probably a bunch of other stuff too, please let me know below!
Behind the scenes, this interoperability is made possible thanks to aeharding/threadiverse, a new library I am working on to normalize various threadiverse-software APIs. It's open source so any project use it, but it's under heavy development right now. What's cool about this is in the future, adding support for mbin, or whatever else is possible!

Yesterday I merged in a PR that lets the instance admin set the sizes for thumbnails.
But the real issue is that the thumbnails have a variety of uses - in the PieFed web UI thumbnails are shown quite small so 170px is fine. But some mobile apps might show the thumbnail in a manner that spans the whole screen which is going to need to be at least 350px wide.
I'll make PieFed generate a 500px version of the thumbnail and include that in the API response (as well as the smaller one).

Hola @rober estoy intentando usar la extension de Raycast para publicar y interactuar con Mastodon, pero cuando intento hacer login de autorización y arranca el navegador, estando logueado en masto.es, me salta siempre una pantalla de cloudflare.
No se si me puedes ayudar. Ya he abierto una incidencia con la gente de la extensión pero no tengo claro si es algo de su lado por que he probado la extensión con masto.social y si funciona.
Acabo de probar con una VPN y lo mismo, saliendo por 3 países diferentes.

I know I'm late to the party to be finishing @karenhao's Empire of AI Now. But now that I've finished the book, I can tell you that it is nothing short of a masterpiece. It needs to be required reading for everyone in the tech industry, or anyone who wants to be in the tech industry.
The book also articulates why I've had such an aversion to OpenAI since its inception in 2015, more so than any other tech company.

I even said that there is a higher chance of me wanting to go back to Google, the company that fired me, than OpenAI. I've never been to fully articulate why I had such an aversion to them, but once you read Empire of AI, you'll understand.
Now, Anthropic is being sold as the benevolent alternative to OpenAI, just like OpenAI was sold as the benevolent alternative to Google back in 2015. Don't buy it.
