Per preparare l’acqua di San Giovanni bisogna raccogliere, durante la vigilia della notte del 24 giugno, una misticanza di erbe e fiori che può essere composta da ginestre, papaveri, fiordalisi, petali di rose canine e di rose coltivate, caprifogli, foglie profumatissime dell’erba di santa Maria, menta, iperico (chiamato anche erba di san Giovanni che ha proprietà paragonabili ad alcuni psicofarmaci), mazzi di sambuco, garofanetti, trifoglio, ranuncoli, lavanda, camomilla matricaria, timo, amaranto, basilico, salvia, rosmarino, mentuccia, malva e foglie di noce, artemisia (chiamata anche assenzio volgare e dedicata a Diana-Artemide), finocchio selvatico (potente amuleto utile ad affinare l’occhio negli inganni), l’avena (simbolo d’abbondanza che aiuta a fare la scelta giusta).
Al tramonto bisogna immergerle in una bacinella d’acqua e lasciarle fuori tutta la notte in modo che la rugiada magica vi si depositi sopra.
La mattina del ventiquattro ci si può lavare il viso e il corpo con questa acqua profumata, in un rito sacro e misterioso tramandato da anni, quest’acqua ha il potere di preservare dalle malattie, scacciare il malocchio e la malasorte.”
