Solo l'oblio

And my ‘it’ I mean ‘my thirties’

This is small, but feels right.

I’ve been trying to use “enslaved” instead of “slave.” For example “enslaved people in America” or “enslaved labor.” I noticed many Black folks making this subtle change so I followed their cue.

I believe it matters because “slave” names someone by definition, whereby “enslaved” names their situation.

Would you rather be noted as a slave or a person who was enslaved?

(I’m writing a chapter in my book about this.)

@mrundkvist I seriously doubt that. Even if your timeline was correct, Sweden, like most countries, has a history of slavery. And if you are talking about enslaved people, even if they were last enslaved two-thousand years ago, the terminology is still relevant and important.

Your question was "Would you rather be noted as a slave or a person who was enslaved?"

Split image showing two clever street art illusions: On the left, a tunnel entrance painted to resemble a person holding binoculars, with the two circular tunnels forming the lenses. On the right, a red brick wall mural of a yellow trombone creatively integrated with real yellow gas pipes, which form the instrument’s tubing, while a cartoon character is painted at the end blowing into it.

From a tunnel turned into a pair of binoculars to entire buildings camouflaged as architecture, these nine clever illusions show how artists are transforming urban surfaces into tricks for the eye. This collection features murals, 3D chalk art, and sculptural illusions from France to the United States—all blending art with environment in surprising ways.

A before-and-after comparison of the same building wall in Lyon, France. The top image shows a bare, grey wall. The bottom image reveals a large mural painted to resemble a street scene with staircases, buildings, greenery, and people, using perfect perspective to create a 3D illusion.

1. “Le Mur des Canuts” — Lyon, France

A formerly blank façade becomes a hyperrealistic scene of staircases, buildings, greenery, and pedestrians in the massive trompe-l’œil mural Le Mur des Canuts. It transforms a plain wall into a realistic multi-level street. More photos and about the mural here!

A wall mural showing a large yellow trombone painted around a series of real gas pipes. A cartoon figure is painted at the end, blowing into the pipes as if playing the instrument. The pipes perfectly align with the trombone illustration.

2. “Trombone Player” by Tom Bob — New York, USA

Using yellow pipes as part of the design, the artist painted a large trombone on the wall and a cartoon character blowing into it. The real metal pipes serve as the instrument’s tubing. More photos here!

A 3D chalk street artwork showing a man standing above an illusionary pit in the middle of a pedestrian street. Inside the hole, classical columns and a pool with blue mosaic tiles are painted to appear real.

3. 3D Street Art by Joe & Max — Gloucester, UK

A man appears to stand on the edge of a pit revealing ancient Roman columns and a mosaic pool. This chalk illusion creates the sense of a collapsed street opening into hidden ruins.

A mural painted around a pedestrian underpass transforms the twin tunnel entrances into the lenses of binoculars, with a painted person holding them up to their face. The tunnels align to complete the illusion of looking through binoculars.

A painted face with hands holding binoculars transforms two pedestrian tunnel openings into the lenses. People walking through the tunnel complete the illusion from a distance.

A before-and-after photo of two large concrete pipes in a field transformed into a camera sculpture. In the final image, the pipes are painted black with details to resemble a DSLR camera labeled “CANNOT.”

6. “CANNOT” Camera Sculpture by Biancoshock — Lodi, Italy

Discarded construction pipes and concrete blocks are painted to look like a broken DSLR camera labeled “CANNOT,” in a parody of Canon. The illusion works from a specific angle where the lens and viewfinder align. More photos here!

A mural of a young girl reading a book next to a puffin, painted inside a turquoise cube on the side of a building. The cube creates a 3D illusion using shading and perspective, making it appear as an architectural extension.

7. “Dream of Freedom” by Juandres Vera — Boulogne-sur-Mer, France

A girl sits in a surreal architectural cube, reading a book beside a puffin. The mural’s 3D design uses the building’s shape to create the illusion of depth. More photos and about the mural here!

A realistic mural of a giant rooster painted across two adjoining concrete walls and the floor. The artwork is distorted but aligns perfectly from a specific viewing point to appear 3D.

8. Rooster Illusion by Odeith

A large anamorphic rooster appears to stand in the corner of an abandoned structure. The painting wraps around two walls and the floor, visible correctly only from one angle.

A 3D chalk artwork on a city street shows two elderly cartoonish men sleeping in bed. A real person lies among them, integrated into the illusion. The mattress and characters are painted with shadows to appear realistic.

9. “Space and Time” by Eduardo Relero — Bochum, Germany

A chalk drawing of two old men sleeping on a giant bed includes a real person lying on top, blending reality and art. The illusion only works from a bird’s-eye perspective.

El título "A view into the Fediverse" (Una vista del Fediverse) y la frase "Who talks to whom - and how?"

Returning from our trip has been a harsh awakening. The contrast between my personal journey and the world's struggles has been a tough pill to swallow. It's left me feeling creatively blocked and uncertain about sharing our trip photos. They feel insignificant in the face of current events. Yet, I believe it's essential to hold onto hope. 'Israel’s Manufactured “Looting Crisis”

Last November, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported the Israeli military was “allowing gangs in Gaza to loot aid trucks and extort protection fees from drivers.” Those looters were charging each truck a “protection fee” of $4,000 or taking over entire trucks and selling the aid in black markets.

Remarkably, the looting was happening at gunpoint while Israeli tanks and soldiers were positioned just dozens of meters away. Those troops usually shoot to kill upon the first sight of any Palestinian that comes within their scope, let alone stand in front of them with weapons.

Haaretz reported that Israel claims it refrained from action against those gangs “due to concern that harm to aid workers could provoke international criticism.” But in fact, Israel consistently bombed those same types of aid convoys on multiple occasions whenever local police or even unarmed volunteers carrying sticks approached to prevent looting. Cindy McCain, the World Food Program chief, has condemned Israel on multiple occasions for firing at or bombing aid convoys.

“It is clear there is collaboration between [the looting gangs] and Israeli authorities,” said Ayed Abu Ramadan, the chairman of Gaza’s Chamber of Commerce.

“Israel bombs anyone that gets close to the borders with weapons or even a stick, except for those gangs. They stop and loot trucks, then take cover in areas near the border and receive protection from the Israelis,” he told me.

Even more astonishing, according to an internal UN memo obtained by the Washington Post, these looting gangs established military compounds from where they launch attacks on trucks and reportedly set up warehouses with forklifts to unload looted truckloads and horde giant quantities of looted aid to drive prices up before selling some at astronomical prices. Those very warehouses are in Rafah, which the Israeli military has fully depopulated and rendered an extermination and destruction zone, meaning any Palestinian who attempts to enter is killed or kidnapped. Israel never raided or bombed Abu Shabab’s compound, prompting the UN memo to accuse Israel of providing “active or passive protection” to this gang.

According to Haaretz, the Israeli military said last November that the government considered putting those very armed gangs and the clans behind them in charge of aid distribution. This is despite the Israeli military admitting that “some of the clans' members are involved in terrorism, and some are even affiliated with extremist organizations like the Islamic State.” We are now seeing this strategy play out in real-time.

The glass forms a spiral pattern as it is being manipulated with a metal rod. The glassblower, whose face is not visible, is wearing a dark shirt and gray pants, and is holding the rod with both hands. The background is blurred, but it appears to be an industrial setting with equipment related to glassblowing. The focus is on the glass and the glassblower's hands, highlighting the skill and precision involved in the craft.

Heavily armed immigration agents descend on #MacArthurPark in #LosAngeles

By Melissa Gomez, Rachel Uranga, Brittny Mejia, Richard Winton and Ruben Vives
July 7, 2025 12:16 PM PT

"Dozens of immigration agents, some on horseback, others carrying rifles in armored vehicles, swept through MacArthur Park on Monday in an extraordinary show of force at the heart of Los Angeles’ #immigrant community.

"Heavily armored #BorderPatrol officers with a fleet of white minibuses partially blocked the streets surrounding the park, which has become a source of crime and drugs in the area in the last few years. #Activists with megaphones were able to warn locals at the park before the contingent arrived, according to police sources.

"The move comes days after President Trump signed a budget that will provide a mass infusion of funds to the Department of Homeland Security to ramp up its immigration enforcement to levels unseen before in the United States. Los Angeles has become the poster child of Trump’s mass deportation plan, as more than 1,600 people have been arrested between June 6 and 22.

"The agents appeared to arrive around 10:30 a.m. after amassing at nearby locations. Once they were at the park, they were met with crowds of people screaming 'get the f— out!' and 'get out!' #MayorKarenBass also showed up to the park, which sits just west of downtown Los Angeles. Activists, who have been on high alert for weeks, appeared to be prepared to deploy lawyers to the scene.

"At some point, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David Kim handed his cellphone to Bass. Speaking to the other person over the line she could be heard saying, 'You’re getting ready to leave? Can you leave ASAP?'

"Demonstrators began to chant, drowning out her conversation. When asked to comment, Bass said the federal immigration agents needed 'to leave and they need to leave right now, they need to leave because this is unacceptable.'

"When asked who she was talking to on the other end of the line she said it was 'the head of customs.'

"Bass handed the phone back to a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Shortly afterward, she boarded a black SUV and left the area.

"It’s unclear if anyone was arrested during the sweep.

" 'This was just one big, perverse publicity stunt,' said #RonGochez, a member of #UniónDelBarrio, an independent political organization advocating for immigrant rights and social justice. 'It was just to show force, it was just to take pictures.'

"The chaos on #WilshireBoulevard around MacArthur Park had mostly calmed by 11:30 a.m., though a few protesters and members of the news media lingered afterward.

"Mikema Nahmir, 28, said he was out for his morning walk at 11 a.m. when he saw two women running down the street yelling that '#LaMigra' was at MacArthur Park.

"Nahmir joined the group of #protesters who chased and yelled after the #military-style trucks. At one point, he said, someone from the truck shot out an #irritant toward him and another protester.

" 'L.A. is ours, this is our city,' Nahmir said. 'This is what my morning walk turned into. They’re terrorizing our neighborhood.'

"Live video from the scene Monday morning broadcast on social media showed a line of white vans that have been used to transport arrestees as well as several agents on horseback. Agents cleared the scene by 11:20 a.m. and it was not immediately clear how many people they had taken into custody.

"U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino, who has been leading the operations on the ground in Los Angeles, was present during the operation.

"Bovino, who is based near the U.S.-Mexico border along with others in the Trump administration, was sued last week by immigrant rights groups seeking to block what it calls an 'ongoing pattern and practice of flouting the #Constitution and federal law' during immigration raids. They say raids have targeted individuals based on race, lack #DueProcess and some practices are akin to #kidnapping rather than legal enforcement. A hearing is set for later this week in federal court.

"Asked for comment on whether any arrests had been made, a senior DHS official, said, 'We don’t comment on ongoing enforcement operations.' "

Contents of the letters that Attorney General Pam Bondi sent to major tech companies like including Apple, Google, and Oracle claim a shutdown of TikTok would hamper the government's ability to execute national security and foreign affairs. Legal scholars indicate this logic is legally very shaky and future administrations would likely not be bound by these pronouncements.

TikTok's tech partners face massive legal risks by relying on Bondi's promises not to enforce the ban law, as courts rarely protect defendants who count on executive non-enforcement.
