Spiked metal bars, painted green and rising diagonally from left to right (following the direction of unseen stairs), stand in front of chain-link fencing overlooking a view of traffic on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. In the 1940s and 50s, following Robert Moses’ vision, the BQE slashed through thriving working-class communities. It cut off the Red Hook waterfront from the rest of South Brooklyn, requiring the demolition of neighborhoods and the displacement of thousands — mostly communities of color. It was a win for car culture and for affluent suburbanites who wanted easier access to Manhattan, at the expense of pollution, disinvestment, and de facto segregation for Red Hook’s longtime residents. Now, with luxury developers pressuring city officials for a deal to let them build on New York’s last working waterfront, the threat of gentrification and displacement looms over the neighborhood again. Went on a little trip to the coast yesterday.

In #oregon it's the coast and not the beach.

@spacehobo it doesn't matter what industry gets hollowed out through homogenizing efficiencies. The final cost grows. Since there's no getting around the energy required to produce something (gotta come from somewhere) the equity that was once shared by all in the industry doing the (mundane work) now gets funneled into one TechGiant's pocket as the efficiency fee for making the whole process "easier." Streamlined. Processed.
