It's been less than a week since Donald Trump signed his big ugly megabill into law, and already Democrats are making Republicans pay for screwing over their own voters. thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p…
in reply to George Takei 🏳️‍🌈🖖🏽

Good. Because I'm tired of the Dems bailing them out and then in 4 years everyone is like, "see that wasn't as bad as those mean old snowflake Dems wanted you to believe" and then everyone forgets the attacks on everything it means to be American and act like GOP isn't a basket of deplorables, again.
in reply to George Takei 🏳️‍🌈🖖🏽

Will the democrats be able to make their positions on the Right's most vilified topics, such as Immigrants' rights, health care, and LGBTQ rights palatable to an angry Republican electorate that only knows Fox News' propaganda?
Yes, these people are angry at MAGA's theft, but it may not be enough for them to accept evil demon-crats.

The image features a vibrant, colorful background with a gradient of blue hues, transitioning from a lighter shade at the center to a darker shade at the edges. Scattered across the background are small, multicolored confetti-like shapes in red, yellow, green, and blue, adding a festive touch. At the center of the image is a square icon with a glowing effect, set against a purple background. The icon contains a stylized representation of text or code, depicted by horizontal white lines within the square. The overall composition is balanced, with the icon serving as the focal point amidst the lively backdrop.

One rarely imagines such things.

But everything moves—in infinite ways from infinite perspectives under infinite influences.

It can't not.

I assume a rule: there can be zero matter/energy at zero entropy.

Waves—the emissaries and representatives of energy—we know transform but never disappear.

Here we see a manifestation in the eddies of those waves subtilely concealed beneath the obvious.

A curious path of least action.

Semiconductor industry could short out as copper runs dry

Climate change could pose a threat to the technology industry as copper production is vulnerable to drought, while demand may grow to outstrip supply anyway.

According to a report out today from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), copper mines require a steady water supply to function, and many are situated in places around the world that face a growing risk of severe drought due to shifts in climate.

Copper is almost ubiquitous in IT hardware because of its excellent electrical conductivity, from the tracks on circuit boards to cabling and even the interconnects on microchips. PwC's report focuses just on chips, and claims that nearly a third (32 percent) of global semiconductor production will be reliant on copper supplies that are at risk from climate disruption by 2035.

If something is not done to rein in climate change, like drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions, then the share of copper supply at risk rises to 58 percent by 2050, PwC claims. As this seems increasingly unlikely, it advises both copper exporters and semiconductor buyers to adapt their supply chains and practices if they are to ride out the risk.

If a "follower-only" toot asks a question, how do you answer?

Reply at "follower-only", and most others who also interact with the original toot will not see that reply. This creates an overall awkward experience. Dupes+stuff.

With the usual "public but not advertised" distribution, you publicize at least the existence of the original toot. This is unfriendly to the original poster.

Maybe people shouldn't ask questions in "followers only" toots to begin with?

What do you think?

🎬️ watched New Nightmare (1994)

AKA Wes Craven's New Nightmare AKA Nightmare on Elm Street 7.

Probably the most interesting film in the series? That doesn't mean it's the best, though. There's a lot here that's real good, but unfortunately all the main important stuff for something like this is kinda weak.

Extremely rare case where going full meta works. Probably because it's taken seriously while not thinking that doing this is making it very smart. Just playing it very straight.

in reply to MenacingMecha

The image is a movie poster for "Wes Craven's New Nightmare." The background is predominantly red, creating a sense of foreboding. At the top, the text reads "From the creator of A Nightmare on Elm Street" followed by "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" in large white letters. A menacing figure with a red, wrinkled face and a mechanical glove with sharp, metallic claws is prominently featured. The glove is positioned in the center, with the figure's face partially visible behind it. Below the figure, there is a tagline in red text that says, "This Time Staying Awake Won't Save You." In the lower part of the poster, there is a silhouette of a man and a child standing in front of a window with a warm, orange glow, suggesting a sense of danger. The names of the cast and crew are listed at the bottom, including Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and Wes Craven. The overall design is dark and ominous, with a focus on the horror theme.

The figure is saying, "AID FROM MY ADMINISTRATION GOES TO THOSE WHO NEED IT THE MOST." The cartoon is signed "©2025 by Appear in eaglecartoons.com" and is attributed to "Aetter." 9 Sculptures You (Probably) Didn’t Know Existed

Split image showing two outdoor sculptures. Left: "Dignity" statue in South Dakota, USA, a 50-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture of a Native American woman with arms outstretched, draped in a star quilt of blue and silver diamond panels, set against a dramatic cloudy sky. Right: "Window and Ladder – Too Late for Help" by Leandro Erlich in Montevideo, Uruguay, featuring a floating brick wall fragment with a window and a tall white ladder extending from the ground up to it, placed in a grassy field with trees and an industrial building in the background.

From a 50-foot Native American monument overlooking the Missouri River to a surreal hammock strung across a border fence, these sculptures push the boundaries of form, meaning, and public space. Whether constructed from stone, steel, wire, or illusion, each work defies convention — and chances are, you haven’t seen them before. Locations span from Barcelona to Philadelphia, from South Dakota plains to Turkish landscapes.

Bronze sculpture of a seated person on a bench in Geneva, Switzerland, by Albert György. The figure has a large hollow void through its torso and head, symbolizing internal emptiness. Background shows a park and lake with cloudy sky.

1. Melancholy — Albert György in Geneva, Switzerland

This bronze sculpture of a seated figure appears hollowed out from within, forming an arched void from chest to head. The minimalist facial features and slumped posture evoke absence and loss, using emptiness as its central element.

Surreal sculpture in Montevideo, Uruguay by Leandro Erlich showing a suspended brick wall with a window, held up by a white ladder standing in grass. The structure floats with no visible support beyond the ladder.

2. Window and Ladder – Too Late for Help — Leandro Erlich in Montevideo, Uruguay

A fragment of brick wall with a single window floats mid-air, supported by a ladder that leads nowhere. Placed in an empty lot, this illusion-based sculpture alters space and challenges logic.

Outdoor installation in Istanbul by Murat Gök featuring a man lying in a hammock made of wire fence material strung between two leaning fence posts in an open field.

3. Border Hammock — Murat Gök in Istanbul, Turkey

Two fence poles curve inward to cradle a man resting in a hammock made from the fence itself. By bending an otherwise rigid border element into a place of rest, the sculpture offers a quiet yet clever political statement.

Bronze sculpture on a city sidewalk in Philadelphia by Zenos Frudakis. Human figures emerge from a textured wall in a progression from entrapment to freedom, ending with a fully sculpted person stepping away.

4. Freedom — Zenos Frudakis in Philadelphia, USA

This bronze wall shows four human forms in various stages of breaking free, culminating in a fully emerged figure stepping into open space. It explores transformation and personal liberation.

Outdoor sculpture in a grassy park in Germany showing a bench slung between two red straps attached to a large Y-shaped tree branch, designed to resemble a giant slingshot.

5. Giant Slingshot Bench — Cornelia Konrads in Germany

A wooden bench is suspended by two long red straps tied to a massive Y-shaped branch. The setup mimics a slingshot ready to launch, blending utility with playful imagination.

Monumental sculpture in South Dakota by Dale Lamphere of a Native American woman in traditional dress with a star quilt cape, made of blue and silver panels. Located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River.

6. Dignity — Dale Lamphere in Chamberlain, South Dakota, USA

Standing 50 feet tall, this stainless steel monument honors Native American women. The figure wears a star quilt composed of blue diamond shapes that shimmer in the wind.

Marble statue in Barcelona’s Poblenou Cemetery depicting a winged skeleton embracing and kissing the forehead of a limp male figure kneeling on a plinth. Background includes other cemetery sculptures.

7. The Kiss of Death — Unknown Artist in Barcelona, Spain

This marble sculpture in Poblenou Cemetery shows a skeleton with wings gently kissing the forehead of a lifeless young man. Created in 1930, it’s both romantic and haunting.

Outdoor sculpture by Celeste Roberge in Portland, Maine of a crouching human form made from metal mesh filled with rounded stones, placed on a concrete sidewalk near a modern building.

8. The Weight of Grief — Celeste Roberge in Portland, Maine, USA

A crouched human form is constructed from a metal frame filled with smooth river stones. The heavy material and posture communicate emotional burden through literal weight.

Giant wooden sculpture by Daniel Popper at The Morton Arboretum in Illinois showing a serene woman composed of interwoven tree roots and branches, set in a green meadow under a blue sky.

9. UMI — Daniel Popper in Lisle, Illinois, USA

This monumental figure is composed of sculpted wood and branches shaped into a female form. Her hands and body are formed by intertwining tree limbs, suggesting organic unity.

I have always appreciated and agreed with @bert_hubert a lot on policy and "Cloud" and all this.

This piece from him is totally on point regarding needs, reality of opensource and ways we could go forward.

I, being a pessimist, see no way this vision would happen, I do not think we have the policymakers, organizational knowledge or even ambitions and vision for it in our industry.

But damn do I want to be wrong. And if I am, what he offers is probably our best chance out of this mess.

too late. We already lost it. At this point the question is if we actually are serious about taking it back. So far, I am not seeing it. Partially because people do not want to see the size of the risk (too scary) and partially because people really do not want to accept the size of the work needed.

It needs a change of policy and view.

Truth. We are probably not serious about taking back our digital sovereignty at the moment. You know how it is. Bureaucracies gonna' bureaucrate. I.E.: find the lowest bidder, or someone who takes them out to dinner, or someone who is willing to train their staff on proprietary systems. Or all three. If I see anyone trying to steer the ship toward the right direction I will point them in the direction of Hubert's manifesto.

My money, for where that leadership comes from if & when we see it, is on #Norway or #Finland, but I'm just guessing.

I struggle to believe that in a civilized country a federal fund that provides broadband Internet connection to schools and libraries needs to be put in discussion, all the way up to the Supreme Court, by a bunch of sociopaths who believe that providing fast Internet to students who can’t have it at home is unconstitutional.
