Mastodon 4.4 is out now,
and it brings changes for profiles and lists and also lays the groundwork for quote posts.
With #profiles, you can feature specific hashtags so that people can see all the posts you’ve tagged with those hashtags.
Mastodon is also making a change to how #pinned posts work: you can still pin up to five posts onto your profile, but they’ll now show up as a single carousel -- so you don’t have to scroll down as far to see new posts.
When you’re looking at a profile, Mastodon can now tell you how many people you follow also follow that person.
For lists, Mastodon says that Creating and managing #lists has been significantly streamlined -- it’s easier than ever to add and remove accounts from your lists both directly from profiles and from your own follows and followers listings.
And with #quote posts, which Mastodon already said were in the works,
the platform is doing what it calls “part one” of implementation.
“Since Mastodon runs on over 8,000 independent servers that together form the platform you know,
releasing features like this requires a two-pronged approach:
first we release code that supports processing and displaying this new format,
and then release code that allows our users to actively use the feature,” Mastodon says.
With 4.4, “you will be able to see quotes from compatible Fediverse platforms (including future Mastodon releases),”
but you won’t actually be able to quote posts until Mastodon’s 4.5 release.

Ben Askren ha condiviso un aggiornamento toccante sulle sue condizioni di salute dopo mesi di silenzio, raccontando la drammatica esperienza vissuta tra maggio e luglio. In un video pubblicato sui suoi canali social (al momento della pubblicazione FB è ancora fermo al post di marzo e IG è non raggiungibile – instagram.com/benaskren/ ) , l’ex lottatore UFC ha spiegato di aver subito un doppio trapianto di polmoni e il coma durato un mese.
“Non vi aggiorno da un po’ e penso che ve lo meritiate,” ha detto Askren nel video. “Ho appena letto il diario di mia moglie perché non ricordo nulla dal 28 maggio al 2 luglio. Nessun ricordo. Nessuna idea di cosa sia successo. È come un film, una cosa assurda.”
Askren ha poi rivelato un dettaglio scioccante: “Sono morto quattro volte, il mio cuore si è fermato per circa 20 secondi. Non è l’ideale, lo sapete bene. Ma ho ricevuto un doppio trapianto di polmoni e sono riuscito a superarlo. Sto recuperando forza, sto imparando di nuovo a usare tutto. Ieri mi sono pesato: 147 libbre (66,6 kg). Non ero così leggero da quando avevo 15 anni. Ho perso 50 libbre (oltre 22 kg) in 45 giorni. È stata una battaglia. Ovviamente non ricordo quasi nulla.”

Ricordo che L’assicurazione non ha coperto l’operazione e che i soldi e che ha avuto i due milioni necessari grazie alle donazioni. Jake Paul (che con Askren ci ha combattuto sul ring) non più tardi di una settimana fa ha detto che era disgustoso che Dana White non avessa dato una mano e ha promesso di farlo lui…
Durante l’aggiornamento, Askren si è commosso parlando del supporto ricevuto: “La cosa che mi ha colpito di più è stato tutto l’amore che ho sentito. È stato come se avessi potuto assistere al mio stesso funerale. Ricordo ancora, 30 anni fa, quando Dave Schultz morì: tutti raccontavano quanto lo avevano amato. Ma lui non ha mai potuto ascoltarlo. Io sì.”
“L’affetto della comunità della lotta è stato incredibile. È stato meraviglioso. Ora sono più motivato che mai a restituire qualcosa, a fare la mia parte. Vi voglio bene, vi ringrazio. For those 2. My long term plan is to move the Disintermedia blog to a community-hosted service (Ghost is a favourite but I'm still evaluating options).
When it comes time, I'll try to write a bash script that goes through the most complete archive of the CoActivate version, copies each post into the new one. Bonus extra; change each timestamp so it's correct according to the original publication date. Double bonus: do the same for the SubStack version.
Wie Fediverse-Reactions und Avatare in WordPress zusammenhängen
Einen Punkt habe ich in meinem vorigen Beitrag über Folgefragen nach dem Verbinden eines WordPress-Blogs mit dem Fediverse noch nicht behandelt: Die Abhängigkeit der Anzeige der Fediverse-Reactions von den generellen Avatar-Einstellungen in WordPress. Das ist auch ein bisschen komplexer und damit einen eigenen Beitrag wert:
Gravatar und Datenschutz
WordPress holt sich standardmäßig die Avatare zu normalen Kommentaren von gravatar.com. Hat dort jemand keinen Avatar eingerichtet, erscheint stattdessen in WordPress-Kommentaren der Platzhalter, den man unter Einstellungen > Diskussion definiert hat.
Da das mit gravatar.com nicht datenschutzfreundlich ist, wird dazu geraten, ein Plugin wie Avatar Privacy zu verwenden. Oder Avatare an oben genannter Stelle einfach ganz zu deaktivieren.
Überall zulassen oder gar keine?
Wer Avatare komplett abschaltet, ist dann zwar das Datenschutzproblem in WordPress los, bekommt aber Folgeprobleme:
- Der zum Beitrag gehörige Autorenavatar wird auch nicht mehr angezeigt
- Fediverse-Reactions werden nicht angezeigt
Das Problem mit dem Autorenavatar lässt sich beheben, indem ich ein Plugin wie One User Avatar benutze. Damit kann ich für jedes Benutzerprofil einen lokalen Avatar hochladen.
Das Problem mit den Fediverse-Reactions behebt das aber nicht.
Alles gut, dank Blockthemes
Um die Fediverse-Reactions anzeigen zu können, müssen Avatare also erlaubt sein. Da man mit den o.g. Plugins dafür nicht weiterkommt, bleibt nur eins und das geht dank Blockthemes kinderleicht: den Platzhalter für Avatare aus dem Kommentartemplate komplett entfernen! Hier also nochmal die Konstellation, wie ich sie hier verwende:
- Avatare in WordPress-Einstellungen unter Diskussion zulassen, damit Fediverse-Reaktionen und Autorenavatare dargestellt werden können
- One User Avatar installieren, um Autorenavatare darstellen zu können, ohne das zu Gravatar gefunkt wird
- Platzhalter für Kommentar-Avatare löschen (oder Avatar Privacy installieren), um zu verhindern, dass für Kommentar-Avatare zu Gravatar gefunkt wird.
