The Greens had more MPs and Councillors than any of Farage's companies/partys for years, but the media always gave him and his cohorts far more attention -- whenever Greens were given any airtime, there was always an air of "lets laugh at the weirdos/bearded hippies/nature lovers, and their silly ideas", rather than granting any respectability. They were ready to print/broadcast all of Farage's lies, usually uncritically, but wouldn't do the same for people trying to get the public to realise the nature of the problems we were sleepwalking in to.
Farage is an accomplished self publicist. He hands journalists the sort of ready to go content that helps them fill their programmes and pages. News conferences and other publicity events guaranteed to contain a bit of drama. Journalists love a bit of drama.
Sure none of it stands up to intelligent scrutiny but that doesn't matter. If some journalists rake over the drivel he gets more exposure. The sort of people he appeals to are not going to be looking at the sort of news outlets that will do analysis. Is it really the fault of the news media? Perhaps other parties such as #GreenParty and #LiberalDemocrats should be doing more to attract media coverage. Just no more Ed Davey falling off paddle boards.
Yes, I think that's a fair point; the financial constraints on many new media has led journalists to never look a free story in the mouth.... and as you say, while it may be unfair, its also incumbent on other parties to raise their communications game - the Scottish Greens have, I think, been better than some...

there doesn’t seem to be any constraint on the press - even mainstrean like the BBC seem to to skew the questions towards the man in the pub view rather than the expert and the headlines - like “Reeves sleaze” or “Inn-justice for Epping council” like living in a world of Sunday sport newspapers. The ownership & funding interests of news feeds should be the headline - should know if external parties, billionaires pump in money or are found to fund things like flagstock.

@HarriettMB Can’t we try to paint these awful people for what they are? - Destructive agents of hate? That is what they are. There’s nothing Christian about them either! And, largely, they are the ones who got the UK in the mess it is in now. Seems around a third of voters love to hate too hence their support - low voter turnout ensures they end up in power.
The excuse they use for coverage is that they follow polling data rather than seats, and as much as I don't like the end result, I do think it's the right approach- polling is a slightly better measure of public opinion but it doesn't necessarily track 1:1 to seats, as I'm sure every Lib Dem will tell you.
Of course, it could be the reason one is polling better than the other is because one gets given so much airtime...
yes, there is a feedback loop in there somewhere - a bit of extra coverage & that shifts the polls a little, giving more coverage, moving the polls some more.... and so on - the key thing is those initial steps when editorial decisions make or break early coverage expansion

L’autore ci trasporta dentro l’atmosfera degli ultimi anni dell’Alto Medioevo con grande ricchezza di dettagli. Genova, Seborga, Lérins, Gerusalemme, Costantinopoli non sono semplici sfondi, ma veri luoghi vivi, resi con cura storica e passione narrativa. Le Crociate, le tensioni tra la Cristianità e l’Oriente, il fragile equilibrio politico dell’epoca emergono con forza, senza mai soffocare la trama romanzata. Il Santo Graal diventa il nucleo simbolico: ritrovato e poi nascosto, perché troppo pericoloso per l’umanità, è al tempo stesso reliquia, mito e monito. Qui il romanzo si avvicina alle leggende arturiane, ma con un ancoraggio più saldo alla storia delle Crociate e alla spiritualità cristiana medievale.
La chiave psicologica: l’uomo, la donna, il sacro
Uno degli aspetti che più mi ha colpito è la profondità psicologica con cui i personaggi sono costruiti. Errico non è un eroe perfetto: è un uomo che sbaglia, soffre, ama, e proprio per questo diventa vicino al lettore moderno. In lui si riflette la tensione di ogni essere umano chiamato a confrontarsi con un destino più grande. Laurenziana, a sua volta, è la personificazione della femminilità che salva, dell’amore che trasfigura e resta oltre la morte. Non solo figura storica, ma simbolo eterno. Il Graal assume anche qui un valore psicologico: non soltanto oggetto sacro, ma specchio dei desideri e dei pericoli dell’animo umano. È la tentazione dell’assoluto, il sogno di possedere Dio, ma anche il monito sulla fragilità dell’uomo di fronte al divino.
L’importanza dell’opera
L’Ordine Templare è importante perché non è né puro romanzo né mera ricostruzione storica: è epica moderna. Considerazioni personali
Devo dire che questo romanzo mi è piaciuto molto. Non solo per l’avventura e la coralità dei personaggi, ma per l’intensità emotiva e psicologica che trasmette. Ho amato la figura di Errico, con le sue debolezze e il suo coraggio, ma soprattutto Laurenziana, presenza dolce e luminosa, capace di restare impressa come simbolo eterno di amore e resilienza. La scrittura dell’autore alterna pagine di grande azione a momenti poetici e contemplativi, e proprio questo equilibrio lo rende speciale: è un libro che conquista sia la mente sia il cuore. Alla fine della lettura resta una sensazione rara: quella di aver compiuto un vero viaggio, insieme ai personaggi, dentro la storia e dentro l’animo umano.

L’Ordine Templare è un romanzo che unisce storia, mito, poesia e psicologia in un unico respiro epico. È l’inizio di una saga che proseguirà con I Templari e il Graal e che promette di restare a lungo nella memoria dei lettori. I'm far more concerned at retired political war horses that were either left or left of centre fiddling about, messing with core fundamentals like ECHR and the Refugee Convention and Protocol because it undermines the reality that there are 51 million people displaced globally and we're worried about a few that end up with us.
A lot of that is the unilateral removal of Aid & no-one has a plan.

He hands journalists the sort of ready to go content that helps them fill their programmes and pages. News conferences and other publicity events guaranteed to contain a bit of drama. Journalists love a bit of drama.
Sure none of it stands up to intelligent scrutiny but that doesn't matter. If some journalists rake over the drivel he gets more exposure.
The sort of people he appeals to are not going to be looking at the sort of news outlets that will do analysis.
Is it really the fault of the news media? Perhaps other parties such as #GreenParty and #LiberalDemocrats should be doing more to attract media coverage. Just no more Ed Davey falling off paddle boards.

It is a difficult balance to get right.
If you are too populist and concentrate on a good spectacle over facts that would not play well with your educated supporters. Obviously not a problem for Farage and the demographic he is aiming at.
Watched a video posted by Natalie Bennett for the #GreenParty on Blue Sky in response to Jeremy Hunt and the report suggesting over diagnosis of children's mental health conditions.
10/10 for worthiness. 1/10; for news impact. Not noticed any news outlets pick up on it.

I agree recently the LibDems have suffered from a skewed news coverage, but I would say (without looking at any longitude data) that the Greens have suffered more and for longer.... but I take the point that the LibDems, post-coalition, have been often ignored or treated as a marginal party

The excuse they use for coverage is that they follow polling data rather than seats, and as much as I don't like the end result, I do think it's the right approach- polling is a slightly better measure of public opinion but it doesn't necessarily track 1:1 to seats, as I'm sure every Lib Dem will tell you.
Of course, it could be the reason one is polling better than the other is because one gets given so much airtime...

yes, there is a feedback loop in there somewhere - a bit of extra coverage & that shifts the polls a little, giving more coverage, moving the polls some more.... and so on - the key thing is those initial steps when editorial decisions make or break early coverage expansion
