AMD: By the way there's a hardware bug and the resulting video's dimensions have to be a multiple of 64×16. We've added a partial workaround, but your 1080p videos will be 1082p nevertheless.
Trying to encode any input with dimensions not aligned to 64 width x 16 height px will result in additional black padding at bottom/right in the resulting encoded...
@alex02 So I'm no video codec professional, but AV1 as a standard is using 64×16 macroblocks for encoding, so this is something all encoders need to deal with. They will all encode to multiples of 64×16, but then communicate that some rows and columns should be discarded. If I understand it correctly, AMD's hardware fails at that last step.
@alex02 but if that's the only problem, surely we can patch the field in the bitstream that tells the frame size in pixels (thus indicating how many pixels to cut off the last macroblock column/row)? or at least that's how the codecs I've dealt with worked
@alex02 hmm, your post above seems to be incorrect? 64x16 is just one of the block sizes that AV1 seems to support, but I see a bunch of them going from 4x4 to 128x128. see Mi_Width_Log2 and Mi_Height_Log2 in § 9.3. perhaps that encoder only supports 64x16 (which interestingly is encoded as block size 21, the last one of the options)
for VCN4, it is required to have the alignment of 64x16

for the common 1080 height case, to minimize the impact, we adopted an idea to use a HW trick which happens to use the closest height 1082 instead of 1080
@alex02 i work with codecs professionally, my problem here is on a logical level, if you say you use 1082 because it's "the closest height"... and you just talked about how frame size should be aligned to 64x16... one would expect 1082 to be divisible by 16, right? right??

None of this makes any technical sense, TBH. *All* video codecs since MPEG-1 can only encode multiples of 16x16 pixels, so-called "macroblocks"; later standards call them differently and make them even larger, but 16x16 is the bare minimum.
In other words, there is no 1080p video. Never has been. It's always 1088p with the bottom rows ignored by the decoder and filled with junk (typically repetitions of the last line) by the encoder. It's amazing how AMD managed to get this stuff wrong.
Sorry for going back to this, but it's just wild to me that apparently at no point during the development of RDNA 3, with AV1 encoding being a major new feature, did anybody attempt to encode a video in _the_ standard resolution of 1920×1080 on it?
They're like "yeah let's produce millions of GPUs and then be Surprised Pikachu when someone in a random GitLab instance notifies us that, oh, we can't do Full HD™"?!
