Today in misleading statistics:

The number of people who play competitive baseball under the age of 19 and over the age of 19 aren't the same.

They aren't even close.

That the majority of arm injuries would occur in youth players is a meaningless statistic.

It's the base rate fallacy again.

The video depicts a nighttime scene in a residential area, captured in black and white, suggesting it was taken with a night vision camera. The setting includes a white van with the letters 'GK' on its side, parked near a fence, and a white car parked on the street. The area is illuminated by streetlights, casting a bright glow on the scene. A person, dressed in a light-colored shirt and dark pants, is seen walking towards the gate of a property, which is partially open. The person appears to be interacting with the gate, possibly opening or closing it. The background features houses with lit windows, indicating that the residents are likely inside. The scene remains static throughout the video, with no significant changes in the actions or positions of the individuals or objects. The video captures a moment of activity in a quiet residential setting, with the person's actions being the primary focus.

But the desalination process is powered by the energy manufacturing, the water is not shared between them. I was more thinking about the safety and capability of the energy manufacturing, as fallout makes other systems much more difficult.
in reply to fmstrat

Well, yes, dumping irradiated water into the ocean was always an option. So long as the power-generating components aren't the same as the desalination components, you're good as far as the potable water is concerned. This isn't much of a solution for the irradiated water, though, any more than just dumping it into the ocean was in the first place.

The video showcases the engine bay of a car, with the hood open, revealing a well-maintained engine with various components such as the air intake, spark plugs, and hoses. The engine is predominantly metallic with black and blue accents, and the surrounding area is clean and organized. The car is parked on a gravel surface with grass visible in the background. Initially, the engine is stationary, but as the video progresses, smoke begins to emanate from the engine, indicating it has been started. The smoke gradually increases, filling the engine bay and spreading into the surrounding area. The camera angle shifts slightly, providing a broader view of the engine and the car's surroundings, including a glimpse of the road and the car's battery. The video concludes with the smoke still present, suggesting the engine is running.

Last night the universe put a track from this album in my ears and I realized I hadn't actually listened to this album before so I bookmarked it to listen to later and then put on our next episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown...and the episode turned out to be the Chicago one with Steve Albini, no joke. And now I'm finally listening to the album and, like, holy shit. Some things don't suck.

in reply to tagesschau

Listening to this interview of Rudy from #blacksky, I get the impression that there is no simplifying decentralization. You can either do it on the frontend like #mastodon does, or ask/expect people to decentralize later like #bluesky does. Either way, you will need to explain why it matters and help them make it happen.

[I'm unconvinced by arguments beyond #DemocracyOfReach so far. We don't need "decentralized social media" for community. Start a subreddit/discord.]

Verizon has confirmed to customers in stores and online that its network is having an issue on Saturday. Many people have been unable to connect and make or receive calls for hours, while DownDetector’s tracker peaked in the afternoon at around 3:30PM ET with more than 20,000 reports. Some customers report their service has continued to function throughout the day, so it’s unclear what the cause is exactly.

Downdetector’s outage map showed hotspots in many cities, and Verizon didn’t specifically list affected areas. On X, the @VerizonSupport account confirmed the issue in response to customers’ questions, but didn’t have additional details on restoration or how widespread it is

It's the time of year when one starts to think about #distrohopping again.

I've been using #Manjaro for years as my #Linux distro of choice and I'm toying with the idea of moving to #CachyOS.

This is for desktop use only, my servers are all running #BSD anyway.

My home directories are on a separate partition anyway, so it's not like it's a ton of effort to change distros as long as I remember to re-create the cron jobs.

Has anyone made that jump and was it an (unspecified) improvement?

in reply to Timo Geusch

I jump from linux mint to debian couple of months ago, it was more of a jump back, I used #debian between 2004 to 2006 heavily after that for a while I was using ubuntu/xubuntu then long time mint, it was really nice, but I missed debian I am back, feels like home, mint and ubuntu was having too many updates everyday, it is more quite in debian. And #Cinnamon is a bliss, I like gnome and kde, used them long time but they have been heavy always, I also like Xfce or Windowmaker too but cinnamon is more like stable and user friendly.
in reply to Özkan Pakdil

@thejvmbender I do use Linux Mint for a regular "daily driver" type Linux - basically as a direct Windows replacement. The machine where I was distrohopping today is more of a development workstation so I do want pretty up to date packages (hence my usage of Manjaro).

I ended up with #opensuse Tumbleweed, which is probably halfway between the Arch-type bleeding edge and the stable distros like Debian and Debian-based ones.

I usually use Xfce or Enlighenment as the desktop and they work well on both OpenSUSE and Manjaro.

‘Naoise Dolan, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed young novelists, will be boarding the Global Sumud Flotilla to break the siege on Gaza.

– 'I’m Naoise Dolan. I’m a writer from Dublin and I’m about to be on a boat on the Sumud mission. We’re sailing to Gaza to bring provisions to the people Israel is committing genocide against.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a massive effort to break the siege on Gaza, and people from 44 countries are taking part. Why am doing it? Because our own government is complicit in the genocide. They refuse to stop aiding and abetting Israel because they are cowards. I’m scared, of course, but Palestinians face far worse dangers every single day of the genocide and they never had the choice that I do, so my solidarity is with them. I don’t want you to be sad or worried about me. I want you to be angry. The other participants and I are doing this because our government isn’t brave enough to sign legislation. I’m not brave, they’re just spineless.

Palestinians are being murdered, and we lose our own humanity if we don’t stand with them.

Free Palestine.'
