Appealing the ban of user friendlysock

I noticed yesterday that the user @friendlysock had been banned.

I don’t know friendlysock personally and am not even sure I’ve ever interacted with them on here, but I was surprised to see that their account had been banned because I find their contributions substantive and interesting. Checking their profile, I see that they’ve been a member for 11 years and contributed thousands of comments and stories.

Here is the conversation that led to the ban. It appeared in a subthread about a project’s choice of mascot. I’ve slightly adjusted whitespace and elided extraneous text. I’m editing out names of the other users, as I don’t want to drag additional people into the discussion:

Root comment: On a personal note: a bit weird to see the “art”, I wish this project was more neutral. Some people like odd things, and that is fine. But doesn’t have to be the loading screen for a whole bunch of websites[…]

Other commenter: I truly do not understand this. Every company has a logo; many have mascots[…] What’s different about [project author]’s anthropomorphic jackal?

Project author: TBH I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m transgender and people are trying to use anything they can to discredit me because of it.

friendlysock: It’s pretty obvious to me: it’s a weird anime girl mascot that’s coded as underage. Such a mascot is, at best, usually totally different design-wise than whatever is behind [project].

(archived, as the original was removed by mods)

One of the mods responded to the comment. The response is too long to quote here, but they made several claims that surprised me:

  • There’s “clear intent” that friendlysock’s “‘coded as underage’ wording is a veiled insinuation of pedophilia.”
  • Saying the project mascot is “coded as underage” nearly rises to the level of the mod team having to notify law enforcement.
  • friendlysock’s comment makes it “clear” that “[they] don’t like the art or the person who commissioned it.”

The moderator told friendlysock that the mod team reached consensus that friendlysock “need[s] to apologize to [project maintainer] so that we can all move on from this.” friendlysock did not apologize, and they were subsequently banned.

My understanding of friendlysock’s comment was that they weren’t personally taking issue with the mascot but rather pointing out why others might object to it independent of the maintainer’s gender identity. I find friendlysock’s claim credible, as I also think a large percentage of adults might find the mascot objectionable/unprofessional even if they knew nothing about who commissioned or created it.

To me, friendlysock’s comment is similar to someone saying, “I could have predicted the negative reaction to Cracker Barrel’s new logo.” It doesn’t mean that the speaker personally has a problem with it; they’re predicting the average person’s response.

I understand that bigots attack marginalized groups by making insinuations about their art, but I don’t see evidence that friendlysock was doing that here. Just two weeks ago, friendlysock defended the right of Lobsters authors to include art that some might find objectionable:

Other authors here that are widely regarded have festooned technical content with all manner of furry art, lifestyle markers, and so forth–and yet we giggle or grit our collective teeth (to each their own), look past their chosen adornments, and engage with their technical content. You know, like functioning adults.

Could the mod team give this decision a second look?

I appreciate the mod team’s work and respect their decisions, so I’m not trying to attack the mods. This just seems like a very harsh punishment to a longtime member, who, as far as I know is otherwise in good standing. Is there another path here?

Edit: I previously described the moderators suggestion as an “ultimatum,” but @gerikson corrected me that there’s no evidence of an ultimatum. I’ve updated above to directly quote the mod feedback rather than potentially mischaracterize it.

This was parked in front of our hotel yesterday. Apparently, it's a Vietnamese electric car called the VinFast VF 3.

It's very cheap to buy and will do 100 km/h. But only for a short time, and only when the battery is full 😁.

Seats four despite being absolutely tiny.

I've been saying we need to stop buying the biggest cars we can afford, and instead buy the smallest that will suffice. For many people, this could be that.

I hope its not rowing. I remember last time they had a big rowing event there and pretty much anyone NOT from OKC area got sick from water.🤮

Hell I used to drive my 4x4 jeep all through the same river not 2 miles downstream from the rowing center. 😎

The Queramin is a QWERTY Theremin with a C-64 Heart

[Linus] playing his instrument

While we have nothing against other 1980s 8-bit machines, the Commodore 64 has always been something special. A case in point: another new instrument using the C-64 and its beloved SID chip. Not just new to retrocomputing, either, but new entirely. [Linus Åkesson] has invented the QWERTY Theremin, and there’s a Commodore at its core.

If this project sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because it’s based off of the C-64 Theremin [Linus] built a couple of years back. According to [Linus], there were a few issues with the instrument. A real thereminist told him there were issues with the volume response; his own experience taught him that theremins are very, very hard to play for the uninitiated.

This model fixes both problems: first, the volume circuit now includes a pair of digital-analog-converters (DACs) connected to the Commodore’s user port, allowing smooth and responsive volume control. In this case the DAC is being used solely for volume control: SID provides the analog reference voltage, while the 12-bit digital input served as volume control. That proved noisy, however, thanks to the DC bias voltage of the audio output being scaled by the DAC even when the SID was silent. A second DAC was the answer, providing a signal to cancel out the scaled bias voltage. That in and of itself is a clever hack.

The biggest change is that this instrument no longer plays like a theremin. Pitch has been taken out of the 555-based antenna circuit entirely; while vertical distance from the spoon-antenna still controls volume as in a regular theremin and the last version, the horizontal distance from the second antenna (still a clamp) now controls vibrato. Pitch is now controlled by the QWERTY keyboard. That’s a much easier arrangement for [Linus] — this isn’t his first chiptune QWERTY instrument, after all.

Desperado (1995) on VHS.

The film that launched Antonio Banderas into Hollywood stardom—and he does it with pure swagger.

Back in the day, people drew comparisons to Pulp Fiction. Sure, Tarantino shows up in a cameo, and Rodriguez would go on to collaborate with him plenty. But this movie carves out its own identity.

Nothing beats the sight of a lone mariachi with a guitar case full of firepower. Wall-to-wall shootouts, slick style, and a soundtrack that absolutely smolders.

I highly, HIGHLY disagree with the use of the word "demon" in any context of Japanese folklore. "Demon" carries very specific cultural information and nuance that is simply not there in the Japanese. But... "Demon Slayer" makes big money, and capitalism always wins.
in reply to Zack Davisson

Yeah, gotta watch out for cultures specific terms.

I try to avoid the term "faeries" when talking about spirits from German folklore for similar reasons.

Asking for the sense of the fediverse:

I'm in a very sparsely populated area, for local news we're (sort of) served by an on-line news site with posts by mostly volunteer reporters.

Today one of the reporters posted news on wastewater issues in the county seat. She cited, and quoted extensively from, a Google AI overview, and included an AI generated illustration. Do I:

1) contact her by email (which she provided) noting that Google AI is not a reputable, verifiable source of information? And that AI-generated illustrations are environmentally disastrous and a bad idea in journalism?

2) reply in the public comment section for that article that Google AI is not a reputable, verifiable source of information? And that AI-generated illustrations are environmentally disastrous and a bad idea in journalism?

3) ignore it, because it's not my job to try to educate those who don't really want to be educated?

What do you think? And, what would you do?

@justin Chatty is the sms app on Linux Mobile, and it also does XMPP and Matrix... but it does not seem to be reliable for Matrix.

Does it Make Sense to Upgrade a Prusa MK4S to a Core One?

One of the interesting things about Prusa’s FDM 3D printers is the availability of official upgrade kits, which allow you to combine bits off an older machine with those of the target machine to ideally save some money and not have an old machine gathering dust after the upgrade. While for a bedslinger-to-bedslinger upgrade this can make a lot of sense, the bedslinger to CoreXY Core One upgrade path is a bit more drastic. Recently the [Aurora Tech] channel had a look at which upgrade path makes the most sense, and in which scenario.

A big part of the comparison is the time and money spent compared to the print result, as you have effectively four options. Either you stick with the MK4S, get the DIY Core One (~8 hours of assembly time), get the pre-assembled Core One (more $$), or get the upgrade kit (also ~8 hours). There’s also the fifth option of getting the enclosure for the MK4S, but it costs about as much as the upgrade kit, so that doesn’t make a lot of logical sense.

In terms of print quality, it’s undeniable that the CoreXY motion system provides better results, with less ringing and better quality with tall prints, but unless you’re printing more than basic PLA and PETG, or care a lot about the faster print speeds of the CoreXY machine with large prints, the fully enclosed Core One is a bit overkill and sticking with the bedslinger may be the better choice.

The long and short of it is that you have look at each option and consider what works best for your needs and your wallet.
